Toyota FT-1 hints at Supra, more aggressive hybrids
    1389641160

Toyota showed off the new FT-1 performance concept at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show today, and the obvious story angle is that this is the new Supra. That's enough weight for most concept cars to carry, but then we thought about it a bit more - FT-1 stands for "Future Toyota 1," after all - and re-read the hints Toyota is dropping about how the FT-1 fits ...

Detroit: Toyota FT-1 Concept previews a future we want to live in [w/videos]
    1389624540

Toyota has brought its A game to the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, showing off the striking FT-1 Concept. Short for "Future Toyota," the FT-1 is, we're imagining, the supposed Supra Concept we reported on early in December. Penned by the Calty Design Research team, the FT-1 draws inspirations from the FT-HS and the Lexus LF-LC concepts from 2007 and 2012, ...

2015 Toyota fuel cell hydrogen vehicle prototype
    1386791880

Satoshi Ogiso, dubbed "the grandfather of the Prius," said in a recent interview in Tokyo, "Earlier would have been better, but it's taken a long time to get to this point." The point Ogiso was talking about was the arrival of representative prototypes of Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the precursor to the production FCV that the Japanese brand will ...

Exclusive: Toyota to shock with Supra concept for Detroit Auto Show?
    1386356520

We've written about approximately 187,000 rumors about a return of the Toyota Supra to the land of living cars. There are a couple of good reasons for this: first, Toyota won't stop dropping hints about a new halo sports car. Late this summer, Toyota sales guru Kazuo Ohara called a Supra successor "one of the options we have" – a comment followed by ...

Tokyo: Toyota Prius C done up four ways as JDM Aqua concepts
    1385050800

What we know as the Toyota Prius C here in North America goes by Toyota Aqua in Japan. And, just as it did in 2011, the automaker has taken advantage of its home Tokyo Motor Show to show off a few variations of products that the Aqua could spawn. The most immediately appealing to our eyes is the red Aqua Air Concept seen up top. The pint-sized 2+2 ...

Tokyo: Toyota Harrier gets a whale of a facelift [w/video]
    1385038680

Historically, the Toyota Harrier has been a doppelgänger for North America's Lexus RX – at some points, it was little more than a badge-swap and a few options away, at least aesthetically. That appears to be changing with this just-revealed new generation at the Tokyo Motor Show. That's because this two-row, five-seat Toyota is in possession ...

Tokyo: Toyota FT-86 Open Concept leaves us feeling flushed
    1384983540

When last we checked in on our topless would-be hero, the Toyota FT-86 convertible had been reportedly placed on "indefinite hold." That was back in early October, not long after Toyota had trotted out the rear-wheel-drive canvasback to Scion dealers as a possible future product carrot if they decided not to turn in their franchises. And yet, we're here ...

Tokyo: Toyota FV2 Concept is a single-seat mood ring for the road
    1384976400

Of all the vehicles Toyota brought to the Tokyo Motor Show, the FV2 might be the most creative. The minimalist single-seat concept is a glimpse at Toyota's idea of a "fun to drive" vehicle in the future. The FV2 is essentially a pod with a diamond-shaped wheel array (what powers said wheels has not been disclosed), and Toyota says that the technology of ...

Tokyo: Toyota JPN Taxi Concept is a Japanese riff on an English classic
    1384963320

As far as beasts of burden go, New York City's new – and much maligned – Nissan NV200 "Taxi of Tomorrow" isn't a bad one. It's space efficient, reasonably economical, and its simple construction should mean it's pretty robust over the long haul, too. But it lacks panache and a sense of occasion – let alone a sense of humor – three ...

Tokyo: Toyota FCV Concept comes one step closer to reality [w/video]
    1384953300

When Toyota first conceptualized a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle for mainstream Americans to drive, the initial response was pretty skeptical. Still, through relentless engineering and solid product after solid product, Toyota has built the Prius brand into the dominant force in the hybrid car market. Something like that plan of attack is what the ...

    1384380000

Participants in the annual LA Design Challenge always manage to come up with edgy, wacky designs for future vehicles, but with a theme of "Biomimicry and Mobility: 2025" this year's crop of cars might be the quirkiest we've ever seen. As usual, automotive designers from around the world participated in this year's competition, and all the designs will all ...

Official: Toyota previews next Lexus RX with Tokyo-bound JDM Harrier
    1384352880

The Lexus RX shares much with the Toyota Highlander, but its more direct counterpart is the Toyota Harrrier. Never heard of it? That's because Toyota only sells it at home in Japan, and now it's revealed a new one. So if the Harrier is essentially a Toyota-badged version of the RX, then what's the big deal, you ask? The big deal is that the new Harrier ...

SEMA: Spongebob Squarepants Toyota Highlander gets Tanked in Vegas
    1383862860

In 2006, I bought a Scion xB (the super upright, first-generation one), and I always had this wild dream of turning the xBox into an aquarium after it had run its course in my personal test fleet. Long story short, that never happened. But apparently the folks at Toyota got wind of my idea – only, well, this isn't exactly what I had in mind. Let's ...

Toyota FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle) Concept ready for Tokyo, maybe not 2015
    1383625860

Toyota has been teasing its upcoming hydrogen fuel cell sedan – due in 2015, maybe, see below – for years. The information we've heard is that the car will have a 300-mile range and cost between $50,000 and $100,000, but the one thing we haven't had is a glimpse of what it will look like. That changes now. Pictured above is the ...
