Santa has one less excuse not to bring a shiny new electric toy from Zero Motorcycles down your chimney this Christmas. The elven bike-building wizards at the company's Scotts Valley headquarters have been working extra hard these past few months, and are now assembling the brilliant 2015 models in their freshly retooled, reconfigured workshop.

Bad news for those rooting for electric motorcycle manufacturer Zero - the brand is recalling 94 bikes built between December 26, 2013 and February 18, 2014. This is the second recall for the small-scale manufacturer in the past year, following a larger, 268-unit recall in August.

Zero Motorcycles is recalling 268 of its electric motorcycles due a faulty mounting bolt on the front brake caliper, which is prone to corrosion. Were the bolts to fail or fracture, the caliper could come loose and that could stop the front wheels. This, of course, would be very bad news at anything more than a few miles per hour.

Wired Autopia honcho and Autoblog alum Damon Lavrinc is finished with the internal combustion engine. And four wheels. And a closed cabin in which to commute. For the next six months, Lavrinc will be staring Range Anxiety right in its cold, dead (battery) eyes, while splitting lanes and commuting through San Francisco on a long-term-test 2013 Zero DS ZF 11.4 electric motorcycle.

Not only are the 2013 Zero Motorcycles starting to trickle out of the factory, but the company has also just released an app in both iOS and Android flavors to pair up with any of its new electric bikes. Any "CHiPs" fanatic who has ever wondered what it'd be like for Ponch and Jon to not have to yell over their Kawasaki bike engines, it's Zero Motorcycles to the rescue. The California-based maker of electric-powered motorcycles made a version of its DS available for police work last year and is expanding that option to the S model. Zero says it plans to boost production of police- and security-oriented bikes because more squads in Asia, Europe and South America are "taking interest" in electric-

We got pretty excited when Zero Motorcycles announced its new and highly-improved 2013 lineup in October and have spent a good deal of time since looking at the pictures, poring over awesome numbers (54 horsepower, 68 pound-feet of torque and 11.4 killowatt-hours!) and daydreaming about excellent electric adventures. Now that it's actually 2013 however, we want more.

Zero Motorcycles is recalling 315 of its 2012 model year S and DS electric motorcycles to fix a problem that can cause their electronic motors to suddenly lose power. Affected bikes have motor encoder position signals that may drift, or change, over time, Zero Motorcycles stated in a document filed with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has officially approved the electric Zero XU for use in the organization's rider training courses. The electron-powered XU offers a number of advantages for novice riders, including a low seat height, quiet operation and a direct-drive system that eliminates additional learning barriers like clutch and gearbox operation. The bikes are also extremely lightweight, tipping the scales at a mere 221 pounds with the battery pack in place.

Zero Motorcycles has come a long way since the company first showed up on our radar back in 2007, and has only seemed to gain momentum since then. In fact, it just announced a 240 percent increase in year-on-year first quarter sales. It's not been by accident.

Zero Carbonista's all-electric Nemesis acquired its name early last year, was legalized for on-road use last spring and underwent a "general shakedown" test late last summer. Of course, it's hard to forget that the so-called wind car also took out a few hedges when Ecotricity founder Dale Vince mistakenly stepped on the wrong pedal during some testing.
