The 1,104-HP Supercar You Can Drive To The Mall

The soundtrack of existence is mostly thrum and clatter, the day's small deeds and smaller conversations usually having no more affect on you than the burbling of a refrigerator. And then there's a noise that makes an impact and catches your attention. For us it was: "The Zenvo ST1 will be in town, want to drive it?"

It was three years ago that we first wrote about the outlandish coupe, with specs like a 7.0-liter, twin-charged (that means it's supercharged and turbocharged) V8 hammering out 1,104 horsepower forcing the admission, "Attention officially granted." Then there was that body, penned by a cabal of intergalactic villains, Predator and Klingons handling the ridges up front that fade into Robotech and Romulan sleek out back.

What's more, there's the fact that it's from Denmark, a land continually offering up enduring icons of understatement: the Egg Chair, the Sydney Opera House, The Little Mermaid and Helena Christensen, among others. That means, even with 1,104 horsepower, the Zenvo ST1 cannot escape the pull of its own heritage. Obviously, then, it is the wildest looking, most wildly understated supercar ever. Or, as another scribe concisely put it, "One helluva good time."

Zenvo's North American special edition ST1 50S comes with watch, $1.8 million price tag

Denmark may not rank among the countries - like Italy, Germany or England - you'd list as the foremost producer of exotic supercars, but Zenvo is out to change that with the ST1. The Danish sportscar is coming to America courtesy of Red Sea Distribution, and not unlike the new Volkswagen Beetle with its Black Turbo Launch Edition (albeit at the other end of the spectrum), the ST1 is getting its own special edition exclusively for the North American market.

Only three examples of the ST1 50S - one each in red, white and blue - will be produced, each with a price tag of (wait for it) $1.8 million. That's a whopping $575k more than the existing ST1, so what do you get for all that extra cash? Well, aside from exclusivity, the twin-charged, in-house 7.0-liter V8 has been tuned up to a whopping 1250 horsepower and 1106 lb-ft of torque - 146 and 52 more, respectively, than the "standard" car - coupled to the seven-speed paddle-shifter that's offered as optional on the standard car over the six-speed manual.

A dedication plaque and monogrammed seats are also part of the package, and it comes with a special watch from Aspen, itself worth $49k. Deduct that from the purchase price and you're still paying $526k more for this special edition of an already seven-figure supercar. The Zenvo ST1 and Dartz Kombat are coming the to U.S., both brought to you by Indiana importer Red Sea Distribution. The Danish-made coupe will set you back $1,225,000. That price might seem steep for ~~a dressed-up Corvette~~ boutique, mid-engined coupe from a nation not known for supercars. However, underneath that fiendishly gorgeous body there's a 7.0-liter Corvette V8 that's been upgraded to a twin-charged, 1,104-horsepower monster that'll get you to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds. And they're only making 15 of them per year.

The Dartz Kombat comes in at a much more palatable $225,000, and while you can't get that whale foreskin interior anymore, you can get all kinds of amour and perhaps even armament that will protect you from, well, everything bar a direct asteroid hit. For a while there it seemed every new "I'm going to build a supercar!" designer put out a few impossibly beautiful drawings, then drove their stunningly rendered car into oblivion. Now it appears as though everyone who says he's going to build a supercar... actually does it. Perhaps it is worth mentioning that the supercar possibilities inherent in the humble Corvette, which is the base for a few of these high zoot runners, brings the financial case into line.

The supercharged and turbocharged Zenvo ST1 continues its assault on reality, with more photos and information released on what you'll find when it arrives: electric and power everything, FlexFuel capability, a 6-speed manual or potential paddle shifters, and the small matter of 1,104 horsepower. We only received word as to the existence of the Zenvo ST1 last December - even though the car had apparently been in the works for four years by that time. Now, just four months later, an unpainted prototype is on the road getting ready to hit LeMans this year.

According to Mikkel Thomsager of Danish magazine Bil, the Denmark-assembled 1,104-hp, 233-mph ST1 offers "predictable" handling, and piloting one is "like driving a small hatchback," albeit a stupendously fast one. If nothing else, the Danes sure knew how to make the car's 7.0-liter V8 sound properly mighty. Follow the jump to see a little of the car in action. Hat tip to Carsten and Mattias!

With supercar startups coming out of the woodwork, it takes a lot to get our attention. Danish company Zenvo Automotive has done just that with the announcement of its newest project, the ST1. With a mid-mounted turbocharged and supercharged 7.0-liter V8 engine (perhaps from Chevrolet?), the ST1 puts out an incredible 1,104 horsepower and funnels it through a six-speed manual gearbox. Attention officially granted.

The project was started back in 2004, and the first cars are -- optimistically -- planned for delivery in 2009. The first performance tests were completed in October and the rear-wheel-drive ST1 is claimed to have reached 62 mph in what we imagine was a traction-limited 3.2 seconds. The run to 120 was accomplished in just under nine seconds and the top speed is reported to be an electronically limited 233 mph. So a Veyron/Ultimate Aero/GT9/CCX-killer this is not.

The Zenvo ST1 certainly looks unique, with a very geometric appearance, including boomerang-shaped vents adorning the grille, hood and sides. Nothing quite like it is currently rolling on the roads and with just 15 scheduled for production, prospective owners can count on never seeing one in the Whole Foods parking lot.
