According to BMW of North America's president, Jim O'Donnell, the Roundel crew will delay the launch of the 2011 BMW X3 by six months to establish a new customer ordering program and iron out which engines will be available in the States.

The move will apparently make the customization of the X3 both easier for consumers and less expensive for BMW, which plans to offer models with the top ten options on dealer lots. Production of the X3 will move from Magna Steyr's facility in Austria to the automaker's Spartanburg, S.C. plant, where it will be built along side the X5 and X6.

Traditionally, the X3 would be available with the bigger and more expensive inline-six at launch, but BMW plans to make four engines available at the onset, likely a naturally aspirated inline six, turbocharged six and possibly a diesel four-cylinder and the recently introduced six-pot from the 335d.

The delay means we won't be seeing the redesigned X3 in showrooms until the middle of 2011 -- some six months after BMW's U.S-built cute 'ute goes on sale in Europe. However, BMW plans to allow customers to begin ordering their X3s in October of 2010, so expect to see the revamped crossover unveiled in production (or light "concept" guise) early next year.
Now that the other Germans have come with the competition, reports are indicate BMW is moving the launch of the 2010 X3 up to make sure it can compete.

The next X3 will be about four inches longer, a half-inch narrower, and a fraction of an inch taller. The extra length will help improve interior room, but the Sport Activity Vehicle is said to be tuned for increased sporting performance. The features list will include hand-me-downs from the 7 Series such as Night Vision and Heads Up Display, and -- in Europe at least -- six engines will be offered: two gasoline and four diesel. We in the U.S. will probably still make do with the either the naturally aspirated or turbocharged 3.0-liter gas engines and possibly a turbo'd four.

[Source: BMW Blog]
REPORT: 2010 BMW X3 coming in November originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 May 2009 14:28:00 EST.
BMW has just announced a new addition to its <strike>SUV</strike> Sport Activity Vehicle line called the X3 xDrive 18d. Have we mentioned how much we dislike the current naming scheme for BMW 'utes? In any case, the new X3 will come equipped with a 2.0-liter (oddly, not a 1.8-liter as you'd expect from the nomenclature) direct-injected and turbocharged diesel engine that puts out 143 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. More importantly, the 18d manages about 38 miles per gallon (46.5 mpg Imperial, 6.2L per 100 kilometers) in the EU combined cycle. That equates to 165 g/km of carbon emissions, for those keeping track of such things. Despite the all-wheel-drive system's extra weight and drag, the new X3 xDrive 18d is reportedly capable of scooting to 60 mph in just about 10 seconds. Any chance it'll come to the U.S.? Don't count on it. Full press release after the break.

Gallery: BMW X3 xDrive 18d

[Source: BMW]
Continue reading BMW announces 38-mpg X3 xDrive 18d

BMW announces 38-mpg X3 xDrive 18d originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 17:29:00 EST.
The latest iteration of BMW's all-singing, all-dancing plutocrat limo will roll out the door starting at $81,125. That sum will get buyers the 2009 750i (including $825 for destination charges), but those who are looking for a bit more legroom in back will have to pay $85,025 for the 750Li. Production for these models began last month, but don't expect to see them on the forecourts of your local BMW Center until later this spring.

The rest of the BMW lineup is also getting a nudge on pricing, with the average MSRP climbing by 0.7 percent. All pricing increases are effective January 1, 2009; so if you're planning on gifting yourself a M5 or X6 for the holidays, make sure you do so before New Year's.

Click on the jump for BMW's official press release and full-line model pricing for 2009.

Gallery: 2009 BMW 7 Series

[Source: BMW]
Continue reading BMW announces pricing for 2009 7 Series, raises prices on everything else

BMW announces pricing for 2009 7 Series, raises prices on everything else originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Dec 2008 15:28:00 EST. This is more great news for Spartanburg, as BMW has increased production at the plant three times previously, and the facility is already running over capacity. Its stated capacity is 140,000 vehicles per year, but workers there cranked out 154,999 vehicles in 2007. BMW will reportedly expand its facilities in Spartanburg by 70,000 square feet, at a cost estimated at $27 million. This will bring the German automaker's total investment in Spartanburg to $4.83 billion since it opened in 1994. Clearly BMW has been a significant boost to the regional economy.

The German automaker is currently manufacturing the X5 SAV, Z4 Roadster and M Coupes, and the upcoming X6 SAV at the plant. In 2010, it plans to send the Z4 assembly to Germany, but bring all X3 SAV production to the States (some X3 production is currently done under contract assembly by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria).

We mustn't forget one of the CUVs that started it all for the Munich-based automaker - the smallish X3. Though just refreshed, the current X3 is awkward looking, something BMW hopes to fix when the 2010 X3 arrives in late 2009. Shown here in resplendent rendered speculation (click the Read link to see the full version), the next X3 will adopt a front end inspired by the BMW CS Concept that debuted at last year's Shanghai Motor Show. It would appear the concept's flaired nostrels have made their way to the X3's nose, while those split air intakes on the lower bumper are shared with the new X6 and will also likely become a future design cue for BMW activity vehicles. Of course, all new BMWs are getting the ubiquitous but excellent twin-turbo 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower, and we expect the X3 will be no different. That's a good thing, as Dan Roth discovered the current 260 HP 3.0L six in the current X3 gets winded pulling around the vehicle's 4,100+ lb. curb weight.

[Source: egmcartech]
2010 BMW X3 is the same but different originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 20 Sep 2007 18:31:00 EST.
The K-9 unit in Hilliard, Ohio is completely funded by donations from local businesses and organizations. The latest firm to give something to the K-9 team is BMW Financial Services, which provided a specially modified BMW X3. The $50,000 SUV was given to the department in honor of the unit's second birthday and its stellar arrest record. The X3 was kitted out by BMW and other suppliers with a light bar, canine cage, remote controlled door latches, and it touted as being dog and criminal ready. In Hilliard at least, a dog's life has gotten just that much easier.

The folks over at World Car Fans have published shots of Audi's future crossover with barely any camo, and the general theme looks to be "fancy Tiguan". The wide, low slung SUV look is alive and well with Audi's mini Q7, and the front end looks very much like its big brother. Audi dropped a cool 300 million Euros to update their Ingolstaldt factory to make the five-seat CUV, and there's a good chance that everything from a turbo 2.0 to a 4.2L V8 will provide power. The Q5 will definitely receive a diesel powerplant for Europe, and there's a chance oil power will be utilized here in the States, too.

The Q5 is destined to be Audi's next pawn in the chess match to be the world's largest luxury automaker, and if the Q5 can build on the success of the Q7, the X3 and GLK are in for some stiff competition. We know that a new compact crossover is in the works, along with a supercar to best its cross-town rivals, and the soon-to-be-U.S.-bound 1-series will be released in both coupe and convertible forms.

But BMW isn't letting its core products rot on the vine. They'll be upgrading their European oilburning offerings with a new 2-liter diesel, set to find its way under the hood of the 123d, while the X5 will get a 3-liter diesel, producing 286 HP and 580 Nm of torque.

In an effort to combat the upcoming RS6, BMW also plans to revamp the M5 with a revised version of the 5-liter V10 that should bump horsepower into the 520 to 530 realm. Along with the engine upgrades, expect to see several interior upgrades, including a new heads-up display system.

[Source: Motor Authority]
BMW updates and expansions: M5 gets more oomph, new diesels on their way originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 19:34:00 EST. After noting the success of the X3 and X5, BMW is looking to continue to cash in on this burgeoning market with the upcoming F3, which has just received the all-important green light for production from management. The folks over at AutoWeek are reporting that the F3 will be based loosely on the next generation X3, with similar powertrains and underpinnings.

AutoWeek's rendering of the F3 bares some resemblance to the slow-selling Mercedes R-Class, except where the R-Class has to mix it up with large SUVs and full-size station wagons in the $50,000 - $75,000 range, the F3 will fight with small crossover owners armed with BMW's cachet and a much lower price-point. The rendered images of the F3 show a stout people mover with a long wheelbase that pushes each wheel to the far corners of the vehicle. Since the F3 is just now getting the green light for production, we can't imagine a scenario where this small, RWD crossover hits dealerships before the end of the decade.

If you want a relatively inexpensive BMW that handles like a BMW while being able to haul people and stuff, this may be your dream ride because the X3 certainly doesn't fit that bill. If you're already sick of crossovers, then you're going to be in for a long ride.

[Source: AutoWeek]
BMW F3 gets the green light originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 May 2007 11:17:00 EST. The folks over at KGP Photography captured Mercedes' upcoming crossover testing at Germany's Nurburgring, and if there is any doubt which vehicle resides within the cross-hairs of GLK, one of the pics has an X3 in the background.

Expect the GLK to come equipped with Mercedes' corporate 3.5L V6, seven-speed automatic, and 4Matic AWD. We'd be really excited if the boys and girls from Benz-land threw an optional BluTec diesel in the mix, and a AMG 6.3L V8 wouldn't suck either. The GLK is scheduled to hit the streets as an 09' model, and it'll have plenty of competition in this soon to be crowded segment.

[Source: Edmunds Straightline]
Spy Shots: 2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK mini-ute originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 May 2007 10:05:00 EST. While that's good news for the employees in Spartanburg, it's the second big loss for Magna International this week. After losing out to Cerberus in the bidding for Chrysler, they are on the short end of the X3 production deal.

Magna-Steyr's plant in Graz, Austria has been assembling the X3 for BMW since 2003 in a deal that will end when the X3 starts coming off the South Carolina line. The X3 accounted for forty-five percent of the Graz plant's output and Magna is looking for a new customer to take up that capacity starting sometime in 2010.

[Source: TheAutoChannel]
Two strikes for Magna this week, what next? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 May 2007 08:01:00 EST. The plant, which currently builds the X5 and Z4 roadsters, will also be building the upcoming X6 CUV.

Considering the plant has been somewhat underutilized - only rolling out 105,000 vehicles in 2006, when its capable of producing 200k units - seems like a good fit, especially since the move would negate the serious currency fluctuations that are plaguing other automakers. However, a German labor representative was none too happy about the announcement, citing that BMW's Leipzig plant in Germany, which produces the 1- and 3-series, isn't working to its full potential either.

[Source: Reuters]
Next gen. Well, the veil of secrecy behind how Bimmers are being broken into has been lifted and we're absolutely amazed at the speed in which it's possible.

The video above shows what tools are employed and how the equipment is used to unlock BMWs whose owners assumed that their laser-cut keys made theft a non-issue. As always though, where there's a will, there's a way.

Naturally, we're not advocating any kind of illegal activity, but feel that this kind of information needs to be out in the open. And anyway, not only is this video available for public viewing on Google, but the cost of the equipment is hardly cheap, at just under $1,200.

[Source: TechEBlog]
VIDEO: BMW lock decoding secrets explained originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Dec 2006 12:07:00 EST.
Mercedes is preparing a new compact SUV targeting the BMW X3, and spy photos of a test mule have been shot near the factory in Stuttgart, Germany.

The GLK fills a new niche in the Mercedes SUV line-up, together with the M-Class and G-Class. Like the SLK is a "kurz" (short) version of the SL roadster, the GLK is like a baby G-wagen. Based on the mechanicals of the next C-Class, the GLK's styling will ape the design of its big-brother GL, but on a smaller scale. The engine range is tipped to start (in the US market, at least) with Mercedes' 3.5-liter V6, with the mouthwatering possibility of a V8-powered GLK63 AMG in the cards at the top of the range, all driving through Mercedes' 7-speed auto transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive.

Insiders expect the GLK to hit the market as a 2009 model, with a possible unveiling at either Frankfurt '07 or Geneva '08. As always, watch this space for more info as it emerges.

Although Toyota and Honda have been the biggest players over the past several years, Volkswagen obviously saw a niche that needed to be filled with the upcoming Tiguan and it seems that BMW may follow suit with their own luxury SAV.

Predictably named the X1, the new soft-roader will stretch an estimated 170 inches, which compared to its larger sibling the X3, comes in about 10 inches shorter overall. Engine choices are open to speculation, but the smart money is on one of BMW's 3-liter inline sixes, with the possibility of upgrading to their new, turbocharged mill, found in the new 335i.

Whether a business case can be made for the new 'ute is a decision best left to the bean counters at BMW. We just hope that if the X1 finds its way into production, it can compete with the stalwarts of the genre.
BMW X1 to take on the VW Tiguan originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 20 Aug 2006 08:05:00 EST.
