How come? Well, first off, LX Coupes are awesome to begin with, but Mr. Pelmar's is even more special. Rather than neuter his 'Stang in the name of high efficiency, he's gone and created something that should contend in the X-Prize's "Mainstream" category, but would also be right at home on the pages of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords. The car's engine runs on E85 for emissions purposes and has several modifications that Mr. Pelmar designed (mostly electronics, it seems) allowing it to run much more efficiently -- to the tune of a claimed 80 miles per gallon -- while producing 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. He admits that he could squeeze more MPGs out if he dialed back the power some, but where's the fun in that? 80 MPG and 400 horses in a Fox body seems like a completely reasonable compromise to us. Oh, and MM&FF? You need to call this guy.

[Source: Mustang Evolution]
LX-Prize: 80 MPG '87 Mustang with 400 HP originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 10:01:00 EST. The teams vying for the Auto X-Prize have to bring a combination of functionality and fuel-efficiency in order to win the substantial chunk of change offered by the organizers.

The picture above is the Aptera, which through the use of either a plug-in gas-electric hybrid or a straight electric setup can get 300 mpg and has the potential of being retailed for less than $30,000. Some of the entrants could easily be chocked up to vaporware, but we're sure our colleagues at our greener sibling site will give us the skinny next month in D-town.

[Source: Click On Detroit via Jalopnik]
Detroit 2008: Automotive X-Prize entries coming to Cobo originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 15:35:00 EST. No sir, nothing but a full-blown asphalt and nitrous-oxide powered hybrid rocket engine would do.

Pickens, whose rocket credentials include leading the propulsion team for the world's first private spaceship, the X-Prize-winning SpaceShipOne, is displaying his hot rod at the event of the year for up and coming rocketeers, the Wirefly X-Prize Cup in Las Cruces, New Mexico October 20-21. The truck's rocket engine puts out 2,750 lb of thrust, enough for 3/4g acceleration, and it's controlled from the passenger seat by a hand-held video game controller. Dash mounted video displays allow the driver and co-driver to watch the rocket engine in action.

The inaugural X-Prize Cup will also feature the Mark-1 X-Racer, the prototype racing rocket for the upcoming Rocket Racing League. Check out all the action here, including a live webcast of the event.

[Source: X-Prize Foundation]
Buck Rogers, your truck is ready originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Oct 2006 18:24:00 EST. The organization's new challenge willaward a prize of $25 million to the first group that sells 10,000 vehicles capable of 250 mpg.

Throwing inthe caveat of moving 10K units makes the challenge very interesting, as a handful of vehicles have already beendeveloped that achieve 250 mpg. VW unveiled a car called the 1-Litre in 2002 that achieved 264 mpg, forinstance. The real challenge will be developing such a vehicle that can attract a down payment from 10,000 people.

The particular rules and goals for the competition have not yet been set and it's unclear who would oractually could participate in the challenge. The cost of developing such a thrifty piece of transportation will besignificant, but the additional price of producing 10,000 copies will surely move this challenge out of the averageJoe's garage. Conversely, any automaker would likely spend 10x the value of the $25mil prize trying to achievesuch a feat.
Auto X-Prize: $25mil - 250 mpg - 10,000 units originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Mar 2006 13:00:00 EST.
