KTM X-Bow - Click above for high-res image gallery

Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM had high hopes for its first foray into the world of four-wheeled motoring, but that was before the economy took a dive. Now reports suggest that the company has had to rethink how many of its X-Bow track cars it can sell, but further than that, they've had to stop production as supply outstrips demand.

KTM originally figured on building 500 units of the X-Bow each year, but soon thereafter increased their targets to 1000 per year. So far the factory in Graz, Austria, has built 500. Unfortunately, only 80 of those have reportedly been sold. According to reports coming from across the Atlantic, the extra stock has forced KTM to stop production altogether while it tries to sell the units it has on hand, with production not expected to resume again until January 2010.

MTM tunes all things Audi, so it didn't take long for the firm to tweak the KTM X-Bow (with its VAG-sourced inline-four) and the all-new Audi TTS. Of the two, the X-Bow gets the milder tuning (if that's possible), with the 2.0-liter TFSI four-pot getting a boost in output from 240 to 318 horsepower. Torque rises accordingly, with 310 lb-ft on tap, sent through a modified six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. Four-piston Brembos with 305 mm discs are nestled within 18-inch wheels coated in Nokain Hakkapeliita-4 rubber sized 245/40. Although MTM doesn't cite a revised 0-60 mph time, it claims a top speed of 156 mph (one mph more than stock).

For those who are looking for a more friendly daily driver but aren't willing to wait around for the TTRS, the MTM-tuned TTS boasts 380 hp and 364 lb-ft of torque from an upgraded turbocharger that huffs 22.5 psi of boost into the 2.0-liter's four cylinders. A new intake and exhaust manifold is fitted, along with eight-piston Brembos clamping onto 380mm discs, with 20-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (245/30) tires. A 330 hp version is also available, starting at €63,103 ($85k USD), while the full-bore 380 hp package will set you back €73,715 (a cool $99k USD).

Earlier this week, we received an email (posted after the jump) from KTM announcing plans to bring two new vehicles, along with two more variations of the X-Bow, to the Geneva Motor Show. Unfortunately, the motorcycle-manufacturer-turned-track-toy-purveyor hasn't released any details about what's on the way, but a quick look into the Autoblog archives gives us a glimpse of what to expect.

Back in July, reports surfaced that KTM was working on a harder, faster X-Bow that will use the Audi S3's 261-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter, and will be offered in both open-top and fixed-roof variants. KTM is also rumored to be hooking up with Baja Auto, India's third-largest automaker, on a eco-friendly runabout that sports seating for four in a package that's about the size of a Tuk-Tuk. We'll go out on a limb and say that KTM will unveil an off-road version of the X-Bow that's ready to tackled Dakar, but we'll know for sure the first week of March.

Think of the most extreme vehicles on the road, and if you're brushed up on your adventurous automobiles, the KTM X-Bow should come to mind. Made by the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer and looking something like a Transformer caught between car and robot modes, the X-Bow is about as extreme as they come. So ABT has decided to tinker with it a bit.

The result of the German tuning firm's poking and prying is a boost to the 2.0-liter TFSI mill from the standard 240 horsepower, which was good enough to propel the lightweight track-day special to 60 in 3.9 seconds, up to 300 horsepower, which should be enough to tear your face right off. Now if you're thinking that the X-Bow is already in such high demand that ABT isn't likely to get its hands on one, think again: the tuning house will act as the X-Bow's official sales and service agent. Hilarity, in the form of wicked tail-slides and curb assaults, should ensue.

Given the chance to take the KTM X-Bow into any environment, a wintery wonderland wouldn't be one of them. But KTM wants to allow its mid-engine track tool to weather all the seasons - and peddle a few more of its PowerParts and PowerWear accessories to its drivers. X-Bow owners can choose from either central-locking or five-bolt wheels wrapped in Pirelli Sottozero snow tires, along with an optional set of chains. And even though a fixed roof is planned for future models, the current generation X-Bow's occupants will have to deal with the climes clothed in Schöffel jacket and pants, and matching Schuberth helmet. The full line of winter wear will set you back 950 euros, and when you arrive at your chilly destination, you can wrap the X-Bow in either an indoor cover (380 euro) or an outdoor cloak for 325 euro. We think we'll pass and wait for spring.

One look at the KTM X-Bow should tell you it's about as close to a race car for the road as you're ever likely to see. Add to that the European GT4 Sports Light championship and it pretty much seals the deal. But if that still isn't enough, here comes the news that the 2008 Race of Champions has chosen the super-light Austrian track car to compete in this year's event.

For the uninitiated, the Race of Champions takes place every year, fielding a roster including some of the best racers from various motor sport disciplines on two wheels and four against each other on identical machinery. Each year the list of vehicles is changed, and has in the past included Ferrari, Aston Martins, Porsches, Renaults, Abarths, various rally cars and a specially-made sprint car. Last month, RoC officials took a look at the X-Bow, alongside a 4WD racer powered by a pair of Suzuki Hyabusa motorcycle engines, but the final decision just came down. You'll be able to watch the X-Bow, along with the rest of the motor-pool, being man-handled by some of the world's greatest, including F1's Sebastian Vettel, WRC's Sebastien Loeb, DTM's Mattias Ekstrom and WTCC's Andy Priaulx along with recently retired legends Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard at Wembley in London on December 14. KTM and its four-wheeled racer, the X-Bow, had an incredibly successful season, dominating the GT4 Sports Light class in its inaugural year. With a serious campaign under its belt, KTM is finally making its "Race" version of the X-Bow available to consumers, and the bike-manufacturer-turned-automaker has big plans for the future.

Over 30 modifications were made to the standard X-Bow - ranging from semi-slick tires to an adjustable brake balance controller - to bring it up to GT4-spec, and if the €82,900 cost of entry isn't enough, KTM is offering a variety of optional "PowerParts" to take the X-Bow to the next level. Adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars, central-locking wheels, an airjack system, Kevlar front panels, a carbon fiber tonneau cover and a revised rear bumper are available for track addicts abroad. But that's not all.

KTM is launching a new program billed the "Customer Racing Concept" which allows owners of the X-Bow "Race" to campaign in a number of events throughout Europe with full support provided by the KTM crew. For around €3,000 per race, CRS will take care of all the logistics on race day, including transport, race service, spare parts, hospitality, tires, fuel, driver and team equipment, making it easy - if not cheap - to campaign an X-Bow in a number of European series.

In 2009, KTM will launch the X-Bow Super Sport Cup, with two separate competitions. The SSC North will cover Germany, the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands, while SSC South covers France, Spain and Italy. A number of races are planned throughout the year, and there's talk of extending the program to the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Dubai, Bahrain and Qatar, and even the possibility of bringing it to the States.

It was bound to happen, but it hurts nonetheless. The KTM X-Bow is hot off the presses, and it didn't take long for some brand new ones to show up on the 'Ring in Germany with their new owners behind the wheel. That hallowed circuit has led to the demise of more than a few machines, not to mention their drivers, and will inevitably continue to claim casualties as racers test their skills on its winding asphalt. The latest victim is one of the aforementioned German-powered, Austrian-built sportscars from KTM. According to reports, the car spent some time skidding on two wheels -- fitting considering KTM's motorcycle heritage -- before meeting the barrier and coming to an involuntary halt. Fortunately, it appears as if the carbon-heavy structure did its job well and protected the owner and passenger. It breaks the heart, but rest assured, it won't be the last. As previously reported, KTM plans to expand its offerings beyond the X-Bow, with the introduction of a duo of new city cars and a lightweight off-roader. But KTM isn't content with leaving the X-Bow alone. When the Geneva Motor Show rolls around next March, the newest entrant into the four-wheeled world will get a healthy boost in output courtesy of the Audi S3's 261 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged FSI engine. According to Autocar, the more powerful model could be joined later by a new variant sporting a full windshield and a removable roof, making the case for the X-Bow more compelling and allowing KTM to take aim at traditional track toys.

The crew at KTM is basking in the warm glow of victory after debuting its race-ready X-Bow in the European GT4 Sports Light series and taking home two class victories. The team campaigned a pair of X-Bows at the Silverstone circuit in the UK and aside from getting a one-two podium finish in its class, the team mixed it up with the rest of the 16 GT4 contenders, including Aston Martin N24s, Chevrolet Corvettes and Ford Mustangs. Among the 400+ hp racers, the X-Bow placing seventh and eleventh overall in Saturday's race, and fifth and sixth on Sunday. KTM is gearing up for the next race in Monza, Italy on May 17 and 18, and is looking to take another couple of wins before sales of the production X-Bow begins later this summer.

In just under a month, KTM will be campaigning two race-prepped versions of the X-Bow in the FIA GT4 European Cup Sports Light class, and the purveyor of our newest track tool obsession has finally released images of its race-ready X-Bow. As detailed before, the GT4 version only receives a few modifications for track duty, including a steel rollover bar that replaces the production model's aluminum units, some added zylon fibers to cope with road debris, modified wheel covers and a Sparco integrated impact-absorbing head restraint system. Aside from those few safety-regulated changes, it's the same X-Bow you'll be able to pick up when sales begin this summer -- right after the GT4 version debuts at Silverstone on April 20th with Loris Bicocchi and Catharina Felser behind the wheel.

KTM confirmed today what it announced during the reveal of the production X-Bow in Geneva: it will be campaigning a race-spec version of its four-wheeled track tool in this year's FIA GT4 European Cup in the new "Sports Light" class. The team will be operated by Reiter Engineering, the same outfit that worked with Lamborghini on the GT1, GT2 and GT3 races in previous years, as a way to remain focused on more consumer-oriented versions of the X-Bow.

Loris Bicocchi, who helped develop the X-Bow and has tested numerous vehicles including the Koenigsegg CCR, and Catharina Felser, a former Formula Ford and Formula 3 participant, will campaign the race-spec X-Bow during the series. The competition version of the car has been modified to meet FIA regulations with steel rollover bars (versus the production model's aluminum units), a revised exhaust system that uses a racing silencer, extended wheel covers, added layers of zylon fiber that aim to prevent penetration by track debris and a slightly retuned suspension that can hold up to the rigors of wheel-to-wheel action. All told, the modifications are minimal, which speaks volumes about how well engineered the X-Bow is right out of the box.

For those of you who've placed your orders for the production version, deliveries are still set for this summer.

A year ago, we had our first formal introduction to the KTM X-Bow concept. After a scant 12 months, the famed motorcycle manufacturer has officially unveiled the production version of the X-Bow, and over 2,000 people have lined up to get their hands on one of the most driver-focused vehicles to be released since the introduction of the Ariel Atom.

Not much has changed from the original concept. The same Audi-sourced, 220 hp TFSI four-cylinder engine is mounted out back and with only 1,500 pounds holding the carbon fiber track tool back, the sprint to 60 comes up in 3.9 seconds. KTM has smoothed out some of the rough edges, including the exhaust/intake systems, added a fully adjustable suspension and tweaked the bodywork and cockpit, but it's still minimalist motoring at its finest. Back in 2007 we called it better than the best rollercoaster around, and one year later, we're sticking with that assessment.

The unveiling of the production KTM X-Bow is just a week away, but the biker builder has bigger plans to expand its foray into four-wheeled conveyances. KTM's head honcho, Stefan Pierer, has revealed to CAR that the future of the X-Bow will include five different versions of the lightweight roadster, and that KTM is looking to take on Lotus as a manufacturer of specialty performance vehicles.

With over 2,000 orders for the X-Bow already placed, KTM has a hit on its hands. So aside from the base model and a race-spec version that will be campaigned in the FIA GT4 lightweight class, KTM also plans to offer another road-going variant that will be sporting a set of doors and a roof. From there, it's looking to upgrade the stock mill with a 330-hp V6 pulled from the Audi S3, and since the architecture of the X-Bow has been designed from the onset to handle the rigors away from the tarmac, an off-road version is underway that may compete in the Dakar Rally.

KTM, the bike manufacturer turned track toy purveyor, will be showing off the X-Bow in "Gleaming White" next week at the Autosport International Racing Car Show, and has announced that production will begin in Graz, Austria later this year. Preorders have reportedly gone through the roof, but KTM only intends to build 1,000 X-Bows per year for the time being. Those that got on the waiting list early will be in the running for a limited edition model, dubbed the "Dallara Series," that will come equipped with extra kit to boost the X-Bow's prowess on the track. Unfortunately, KTM's press release (after the jump) didn't divulge what additional features the Dallara will be fitted with, but if we were to wager a guess, we'd put our money on some upgraded brake components and a few tweaks to the ECU to boost the Audi-sourced 2.0-liter TFSI mill.

KTM has already taken 1,500 preorders for its X-Bow track tool, and 250 of them are headed to buyers in the UK. The price for the orange and carbon fiber apex assassin: £37,012. It's a bit on the high side when compared to some of the other wares available, but we doubt the price will register many complaints - especially since it'll come packing 240 HP when deliveries begin towards the end of spring next year.

The X-Bow is a light weight roadster offering the kind of performance you'd get from a supercar for a fraction of the price. Little surprise then that demand for the new roadster has forced its manufacturer, Austrian motorbike specialist KTM, to build a new factory specifically to supply enough X-Bows to meet the growing list of customer orders.

Being KTM's first attempt at building a sports car, no one predicted the surging demand the X-Bow has received. The company originally planned to build just 500 examples per year but ended up taking nearly 1,000 orders before the car even went on sale. It's scheduled to arrive in early 2008 and will feature a price tag around the $55,000 mark.

For that money, customers will get a carbon fiber monocoque track special powered by a 220hp 2.0L TFSI engine sourced from Audi. It's lightweight, minimalist design should allow it to accelerate from 0-60mph in under four seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 180mph. Not bad for $55K.

The funky-minimalist-cool KTM X-Bow is proving to be a roaring sales success, and it's not even out yet. On Thursday, KTM announced that it has eclipsed the 1000-car mark in pre-orders, and that more continue to flow in, surpassing the company's expectations. And why not? The Audi TFSI-powered X-Bow is mean-looking, fast, and exclusive. After the initial pilot series of 100 Dallara-built cars is complete, the regular production run at Magna Steyr in Germany will begin. With a projected maximum annual capacity of 1000 cars, it would appear that the entire first-year run is spoken for already. Plans announced back in April stated that subsequent years will likely see annual production of around 500 cars. If the demand for the X-Bow remains this hot, one wonders if KTM will try and boost that number to meet it.

KTM isn't waiting for rivals Ariel and Caterham to catch up to its track day special X-Bow racer. The original X-Bow is still not yet availalbe to purchase until the end of year, but KTM is already planning a more powerful version using the 2.0 TFSI engine found in the Audi S3. That motor makes 265 hp in the S3 thanks to larger injectors and intercoolers, but Autocar expects it will be producing around 280 hp when stuffed in the X-Bow. The regular X-Bow will still be powered by a version of the Audi/VW 2.0 TFSI producing 220 hp. Considering that KTM claims the less powerful motor will get the X-Bow to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, the S3's mill should make the car capable of sucking the enamel off your teeth.

When 77 spectators were killed at the 24 hours of Lemans in 1955, a ban on motorsports was enacted in France, Germany and Switzerland. Safety standards were improved and eventually the interdict was lifted in two of the three countries. Switzerland decided to continue the ban and it's been that way now for over five decades.

Regardless of this track-unfriendly environment, KTM officially unveiled their two-seater tarmac toy today in Geneva. Structurally, the X-Bow looks the biz, with acres of carbon fiber, exposed suspension components and meaty stoppers. We'd say that the Ariel Atom finally has some serious competition, but with an initial limited run of 100 units and some distinct differences between the two, this particular niche can probably support another offering.
