Flying cars aren't on their way, flying cars are here. If we're going to see more of them in the air above us, we're also going to see more images like the one above, in which a Maverick flying car has crash landed in a tree. We wrote about the Maverick in 2010 and the reverse-prop-driven buggy with the removable parasail was certified airworthy by the FAA in June of that year. In this incident the pilot, Ray Siebring, said he was coming in for a landing at the airport in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada when his flying car suddenly made a sharp left turn into three descending spirals.

By the time Siebring stopped the spiraling he was so low that all he could do was mitigate the crash. Noticing an empty school field below, he managed to power up and get the vehicle down just beyond the school ground, through some fencing and into a tree. Neither Siebring nor his passenger was seriously injured.

If you want to see how the Maverick usually works, check out the video below of it making a coffee run.
Continue reading Flying car falls from sky and crashes [w/video]

Flying car falls from sky and crashes [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 12 May 2013 18:45:00 EST.
A rock or a brick dropped from a bridge onto highway traffic below can do a massive amount of damage to cars, not to mention a fatal amount of damage to the people inside them. So how much more dangerous might a falling deer be? The image above tells the tale: as a truck driver on Interstate 295 in Richmond, Virginia was approaching the Buffin Road overpass, somebody threw a dead deer over the side of the bridge. Even crazier, the deer was tied to the bridge with a rope.

The driver said the deer wasn't hanging as he neared the overpass, and he figures it was thrown over just as he got there. When the deer went through the windshield the driver was able to avoid it, but he was hit in the face by the rope and flying glass. The deer came to rest in his cab, and there is still rope tied to the Buffin Road overpass. Check out the video below for the full story as reported by WTVR.
Continue reading Truck driver lucky to survive grisly deer swinging escapade

Truck driver lucky to survive grisly deer swinging escapade originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Dec 2012 12:46:00 EST.
The man in the image above is Laurent Cochet, a journalist with the French magazine Moto Journal. He's testing a Yamaha FJR 1300 in Saint Martin en Ré, France next to the quai, and he's about to tape what he probably thinks will be a beautiful shot along the water, boat masts in the foreground, marina cafes and the back.

That is not at all what happens.

Bikes with hard panniers don't play well with bollards. When Cochet's luggage box hits the squat steel post, both Cochet and the bike take a spectacular ride over the edge of the quai. We're told that, thankfully, Cochet wasn't hurt beyond a few bruises and a sprained finger. The bike... not so much. Prepare to wince at the video below.
Continue reading French motorcycle journalist hits pole, takes a plunge

French motorcycle journalist hits pole, takes a plunge originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Dec 2012 14:57:00 EST.
Fate has been cruel to the unique little Nissan DeltaWing. Already an outcast because of its odd shape, the experimental prototype was unceremoniously ran off the road in its inaugural outing last June during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It's followup to that unfinished effort is supposed to be this weekend's Petit Le Mans race, the season finale of the American Le Mans Series in which the DeltaWing will be participating next year. But word from the Twitterverse is that the DeltaWing has crashed again, this time during testing for the big race at Road Atlanta. The official tweet from the DeltaWing team reads as follows.

Incident at @RoadAtlanta. GTC Porsche made contact with @gunnarjeannette who got upside down. Gunnar is ok. Car report to follow. #ALMS

Gunnar Jeannette was behind the wheel at the time of contact with the unidentified GTC Porsche and, as the tweet indicates, is "ok." Fellow series driver Bruno Junqueira, however, tweeted the above pic of the damage, which, without the context of video, looks pretty severe.

There's been no official word yet from the DeltaWing team or Nissan about what happens next, specifically whether or not the car can be repaired in time for this weekend's race or there's another one waiting in the wings. We'll let you know when we know.
Nissan DeltaWing crashes during practice for Petit Le Mans originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 16:23:00 EST. Anthony Margrave left his home after telling friends he was going for a short ride, but wound up laying down his Yamaha just 15 minutes into his outing.

Both Margrave and the bike wound up sliding into a seven-foot-deep ditch between a road and a field, after colliding with a metal sign post. The 40-year-old motorcyclist collected a fractured spine, broken ribs and a damaged airway in the process. A police search party found him three days later after spotting fragments of the bike, and initially thought Margrave was dead.

It was only when an officer spotted him blinking his eyes that he was rushed to the hospital. By that point, Margrave was also suffering from hypothermia. Doctors induced a coma and performed surgery on the rider's airway, but The Daily Mail reports the lucky motorcycle rider is in critical condition, but has been taken off of life support.

Margrave said he was conscious during most of the three days and shouted for help from passing cars to no avail. Due to his injuries, he could not move his hands to fetch his phone or brush bugs away from crawling over his body. Even so, family members say he is in good spirits overall, only becoming upset when he learned his bike was demolished and that paramedics had cut his fairly expensive jeans.
Motorcyclist survives crash, three days in a roadside ditch originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Sep 2012 18:33:00 EST. One owner in Vancouver recently had an incident that saw his Italian machine wind up in pieces. It's unclear exactly what happened, but a rear-end collision of some variety resulted in substantial damage to the vehicle's back half. With coolant pooling onto the pavement and pieces of bodywork strewn about the street, the video is a wince-fest from beginning to end.

From the looks of things, the wet pavement may not have done the car nor the driver any favors, but if you live in Vancouver and own an F40, odds are you know how to handle the supercar in the wet. Check it out in the clip below.
Continue reading High-def video of wrecked Ferrari F40 is just as sad as it sounds

High-def video of wrecked Ferrari F40 is just as sad as it sounds originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 13:59:00 EST.
A group of motorcyclists encountered one hell of an incident on a Texas highway, all of which was captured thanks to the magic of helmet cam. This time, however, it doesn't involve the authorities and more than just the riders' pride was hurt.

According to one of the bikers on the weekly ride in McAllen, Texas, a truck was carrying large styrofoam boxes that weren't properly tied down. As the group came up behind the truck, one of the boxes flew out and shattered in front of the riders. One of the motorcycles went down in the explosion of styrofoam, and second rider went down after, clipping the first downed bike in the process. Both riders were taken to the hospital and, thankfully, were released the following day with nothing worse than bruising and road rash. One of the bikes, though, was totaled.

The best motorcycling advice anyone ever gave me was simple: ride like everyone is out to kill you. This sort of hyper-paranoia is great for keeping both bike and rider in one piece, but it can also easily tint your view of the rest of humanity. When an absent-minded teen wanders into your lane or elderly driver calmly ignores a stop sign right in front of you, the instances serve as proof of everyone's murderous intentions. It's as if a tiny light bulb illuminates inside your skull, underscoring in living color that yes, these people really are doing these things on purpose.

Of course, that's not the case nine times out of 10. People are screw-offs behind the wheel because the perceived stakes are so low. But on a bike, the difference between coming to a complete stop and rolling a red light can separate getting home to the wife in one piece and wondering where your right leg got off to.

Not every rider embraces this sort of uber paranoia, though. We're beginning to think it's a cultural marker. The two videos below beautifully underscore the difference between angry-riding Americans and their forgiving Canadian counterparts. Check them out to see what we mean and see if you can guess which is which.

*Update: While you can't fool the internet, you can certainly fool us. As it turns out, the gents on the dirt bikes are as American as Apple pie. One clear-sighted redditor spotted Texas inspection decals on the truck in question. We still stand by the assertion that Canadians are the nicest folk on the planet, though.
Continue reading Watch Americans, Canadians react very differently to two-wheeled skirmishes *UPDATE

Watch Americans, Canadians react very differently to two-wheeled skirmishes *UPDATE originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 16:56:00 EST.
The image above is the aftermath of what happened at an intersection in Roselle Park, New Jersey. The driver of the dark, mangled car in the lower left ran the red light, hit a car in crossing traffic, was shunted into the ramped concrete divider and launched into an airborne 360 and a light pole.

The video itself wasn't as controversial as the fact that it was released at all. American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the company that has a contract managing red light cameras for Roselle Park, posted the video on its website to offer a demonstration of what happens when people run red lights. City residents complain that the timing of yellow lights is too short - which, admittedly, had little to do with this spectacle - but the city police chief defended the cameras and their effects on local traffic. You can watch the incident in the video below.
Continue reading Red light-runner launched into airborne pirouette

Red light-runner launched into airborne pirouette originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 11:31:00 EST.
You think someone you know had a difficult pregnancy? A 32-year-old mother-to-be in Germany found herself in a serious accident recently. According to The Local, the woman was driving along when she felt her unborn child give her a swift kick in the side. The pain was so intense that she apparently lost control of her vehicle, struck a lamppost and promptly flipped the machine on its side. From there, it slid into a garden fence and came to a stop.

A friendly passerby was kind enough to help the woman out of her car through the trunk, and while she was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, both she and her kicking baby were found to be in good health. The vehicle looks to be a total loss, however.
Unborn baby kicks off car accident originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 09:29:00 EST.
HyperFest, an annual event at the Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia, is day seemingly packed with just about everything you can do in a car or watch a car do, from road racing to drifting, off-roading and karting, as well as Hot Import Nights, a Rice-Rice Challenge and a rollover contest. And that's not even the half of it.

During one portion, James Greenwood was working his Chevrolet Corvette Z06 around the Summit Point circuit, heading down the start/finish straight at full bore. As he got near the braking zone for Turn One, a deer doubled back onto the track and quickly, sadly, discovered it was too late for either man or beast to take avoiding action.

Then, as if remodeling your car with a deer wasn't depressing enough, Greenwood said "the HyperFest emcee told ten thousand Hillbillians that I was responsible for the thirty minute Daisy Duke delay." Scroll down to see the incident in real time and slo-mo. Warning: the driver was all right, the deer was not, and while the impact isn't gory, it's not exactly, um, pleasant.
Even though Greenwood probably didn't have a snowball's chance of avoiding the impact, the video serves as a powerful reminder that whether you're on a closed course or on public roads, it's important to be vigilant about watching for local fauna, day or night.
Continue reading How not to put venison on the grille: Corvette Z06 hits deer at HyperFest

How not to put venison on the grille: Corvette Z06 hits deer at HyperFest originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 12:45:00 EST.
One is never sure whether to call this the "the best of the worst of," or vice versa: someone has strung together nearly three minutes of impacts culled from Russian dash cams - and those impacts cover everything from car-on-car to truck-on-car tofist-on-face. This is, after all, a land where an innocent Land Rover Freelander 2 can suddenly do a somersault in the middle of the street. And the image above, for instance, is the moment just before a fast-moving truck that tipped over in an oncoming lane slides into another Russian driver just going on about his business.

Although the subtitle of the video is "Dash-cams: Russia's Last Hope For Civility And Survival On The Road,"we doubt you will find any hope or civility, and a questionable idea of survival. Scroll down to watch it all unfold.
Continue reading Watch all the Russian dash-cam footage you can stand

Watch all the Russian dash-cam footage you can stand originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 21:02:00 EST.
We love action movies as much as the next guy, but sometimes the car stunts just look too ridiculous. Like when a cop car goes airborne during a chase scene after rear-ending a parked car. Or how about when a vehicle flips end over end upon impact. That never happens, right?

Well it apparently does in Russia, where, thanks to seemingly everyone in the country having a dash cam, you can watch video of a Land Rover Freelander 2 driving over a manhole cover and going Bourne Ultimatum.

What caused the cover to blow the way it did is not evident, though it's interesting to note that in the aftermath (in the second video especially), you see that it's not a plain, flat manhole cover that comes to rest near the car. It's a cylindrical object with a square grate across the top. Lending credence to the whole thing not being a fake is that a second static security camera (or similar setup) pointed at the street also caught the whole episode.

If "rubbin is racin'!", an incident during the Gatorade Duel races to determine starting spots for this weekend's Daytona 500 NASCAR race also proves that rubbin' is wreckin'. With just two corners to go, Danica Patrick was running near tenth place down on the inside of a tightly packed field. Above her, Jaime McMurray bumped Aric Almirola, who then bumped Patrick and sent her careening into the infield wall at about 200 miles per hour.

Patrick emerged on her own and was declared fine. Her No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet wasn't: it was totaled, and by having to use the backup she'll start at the back of the pack for the Daytona 500. Patrick was philosophical about it, though, and provided one of the best descriptions of meeting a wall at the double-ton: "kind of hug it in and let it rip." According to USA Today, before the incident, Patrick had run a solid race and stayed out of trouble. Despite the incident (which wasn't her fault), the way Patrick ran the race gained her some respect among others in the field.

There are two videos of the crash after the jump, the first is better quality, the second includes Patrick's comments after the incident.
Continue reading Danica Patrick walks away from big crack-up in Daytona

Danica Patrick walks away from big crack-up in Daytona originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 Feb 2012 09:02:00 EST.
It would probably be easier for researchers to change tracks and start telling us what doesn't cause cancer or obesity or car accidents. Latest on the list of automotive smash-up causes, according to a study by UK insurer Swiftcover, are drivers leaving their fog lights on in good visibility. The numbers are brazen, with Swiftcover attributing "as many as 300,000" accidents and two million near misses in the last 12 months "caused by drivers leaving fog lights on in the same period."

The UK highway code prohibits driving with one's fog lights on in conditions with visibility greater than 100 meters. Swiftcover's study says the lights dazzle other drivers, especially in London where 50 percent of incidents were registered, and that this applies to both front and rear fog lights.

Another winter naturally means more videos of snowy carnage, as Mother Nature teams up with an inclined road to befuddle even those drivers who are used to such conditions. This time the location is Bountiful, Utah on January 21, where a slick bit of downhill becomes an automotive Slip-n-Slide.

The video after the jump gets off to a slow start, but about a minute or so in, things start going really wrong. By the end, we can only wonder why drivers at the top of the hill noting the demolition derby at the bottom still decide to take their chances. We also wonder why the road wasn't, oh, closed - either by police or a good samaritan. Follow the jump to see the ballet of carnage for yourself.
Continue reading Why are snowy roads like these never closed?

Why are snowy roads like these never closed? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 11:30:00 EST. We know it doesn't look like the rallying Honda Civic hatchback above is doing anything special, but trust us, this is a case of "Oh, I wasn't expecting that at all."

After barreling across the ridiculously long run-up to the crest, the pilot even lets off the gas before launch, yet still manages to look like he's qualifying for the 2014 Winter Olympic ski jump in Sochi. He might want to work on his pre-running notes before the next outing.

You'll find the mighty leap in the video after the jump.
This is going to be painful, so we'll break it down quickly. Trust us, it will be like pulling off a Band-Aid.

[translated from Japanese]

"So, want to caravan to the car show? I'm excited to drive my Ferrari F355 there."
"Sure. I will be driving my Lamborghini. Let me call my six other friends who also own Ferraris."
"If other marques are welcome, I will invite my two friends who drive Mercedes-Benzes."

Crash!

[sounds of crying]

In all seriousness, we were glad to learn that nobody was seriously injured in the wreck. According to the Associated Press, a group of car enthusiasts were on their way to a driver's gathering in Hiroshima when one Ferrari swerved into the median barrier, likely pinballing into the other cars. Police said a total of 14 cars were caught in the wreck, including eight Ferraris, two Lambos, and a trio of Mercs. The AP report says total damage is likely over $1 million.

When's the last time you watched a wreck that took nearly two minutes to conclude? Driver Eric Peterson's XDR Firebird got out of shape almost immediately during a solo dragstrip run and crashed almost head-on into the wall.

According to people in attendance, both tires on the car's driver's side were torn off, and the impact ripped the master cylinder from the firewall. The throttle cable was attached to the cylinder, so when the cylinder fell, the throttle controlling a 1,500-plus-horsepower engine got stuck wide open for more than a minute. Worst of all, the initial impact knocked Peterson unconscious, so he wasn't able to do anything to intervene.

You can see what happens after that in the video after the jump. Peterson, an experienced racer, came to after the medics cut him out of the car and is said to be at home and ok.
Continue reading The drag racing wreck that refuses to end

The drag racing wreck that refuses to end originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 26 Nov 2011 20:01:00 EST. Mike Rockenfeller crashes his Audi R18 TDI at Le Mans - Click above to watch video after the jump

Audi is down to one R18 TDI in the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans after Mike Rockenfeller was involved in the team's second horrific accident of the race, following the disastrous Allan McNish crash in the race's first hour. As Rockenfeller, driving the #1 car, overtook the #71 Ferrari on the Mulsanne straight, the two cars made contact, sending Rockenfeller into the barrier at full speed, obliterating the Audi in dramatic, terrifying fashion. The shunt was captured by an unmanned camera and Rockenfeller's on-board cam.

Rockenfeller got out of the car on his own power and is apparently okay. He's being checked out at the medical center as a precaution. The safety car is out for what will undoubtedly be another long cleanup. The remaining Audi, the #2 car, is still the race leader. 15 hours to go, people. Follow the jump to see the Rockenfeller crash. The second video is longer, and shows the reaction in the Audi garage.

UPDATE: Audi Sport boss Wolfgang Ullrich was just interviewed on EuroSport, and he again confirmed that Rockenfeller left the car on his own, adding that the driver was communicative with staff at the onsite medical center. Rockenfeller is now headed to the hospital for additional precautionary scans. This is basically the same course of events that Allan McNish went through following his crash earlier today.

UPDATE 2: Mike Rockenfeller is okay, but he's being kept at the hospital overnight for observation.
Continue reading Second Audi R18 out of Le Mans as Rockenfeller involved in huge crash

Second Audi R18 out of Le Mans as Rockenfeller involved in huge crash originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 11 Jun 2011 17:21:00 EST.
