We automotive journalists aren't always the right people to ask about whether a US-spec vehicle should or should not be offered with a diesel powertrain (hint: the answer is usually "YES"). But when it comes to the iconic, off-road-ready Jeep Wrangler, we aren't the only ones who have been clamoring for an oil-burning engine behind that famous seven-slat grille. To that end, it appears there's good news on the horizon, as Jeep CEO Mike Manley recently told Ward's Auto that the "Wrangler is on the radar to get (a) diesel."

"I'm confident that the Grand Cherokee will show just how large a demand there is for diesel, and I think what that will do is reinforce the need for us to target Wrangler as a vehicle that can take a diesel," Manley told Ward's. The most rugged of Jeeps is scheduled to get an overhaul around 2015-16, and the diesel powertrain will likely be introduced around that time.

This year alone, Chrysler will be adding a diesel engine to the Grand Cherokee SUV, as well as the Ram 1500 pickup and Promaster utility van.

It's unclear if the Wrangler will get a new diesel engine or if Chrysler will use one of its existing oil-burners. The Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 will be powered by the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6, while the Ram Promaster uses a less-powerful 3.0-liter four-cylinder. In Europe, the Wrangler currently uses a 2.8-liter diesel V6, which we've had the chance to test (and enjoy). Of course, we won't get too excited until the ink has dried on an official announcement, but for now anyway, things are certainly looking good.
Jeep Wrangler diesel likely after 2015 model refresh originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 15:44:00 EST.
The Jeep Wrangler is already one of the best off-road vehicles on the market, but Thaler Design will help turn your Wrangler Unlimited into the ultimate off-road RV with its ActionCamper kit. The Austrian company adds a fiberglass camper shell featuring a pop-up soft top with enough space for a two-person weekend adventure. Even better, the top is removable (with very heavy lifting required) and it only adds a net 440 pounds to the Wrangler's curb weight after components such as the factory top, rear doors, rear seat and roll bars are all removed.

With the styling of an old military ambulance, the ActionCamper is about everything you need for a short off-road excursion, including a plenty of storage space, a refrigerator, stove, toilet and sink. The camper comes with a four-gallon fresh-water tank as well as a black-water (sewage/drainage) tank that can hold 5.5 gallons. The extendable nozzle from the sink can also be used as a shower. There's also a fold-out king-size bed and, with the top popped, you get enough room in the kitchen/sitting area for a six-foot, three-inch person to stand up.

GizMag says the ActionCamper has a retail price of $53,500, not including the donor Jeep. That's serious money but it's still cheaper than the survivalists' special Earthroamer XV-JP.
ActionCamper turns your four-door Jeep Wrangler into an off-road RV for two originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 03 Nov 2012 20:01:00 EST.
The iconic Jeep Wrangler's earliest ancestors were military vehicles that proved their offroad capabilities by shuttling our armed forces through some of the world's most difficult terrain.

Now, 70 years later, that bare-bones, utilitarian vehicle is all grown up and (somewhat) civilized, but no less American. To show off its patriotism, Jeep has just announced a new Freedom package on its 2012 Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models.

Spotting the new trim packages on the street should be super easy. First, they're only available in three colors: Deep Cherry Red, Bright White and, exclusive to Freedom models, True Blue.

Each Freedom Edition Wrangler receives a military-style star on the hood and rear quarter panels as well as "Oscar Mike" fender badges and "Oscar Mike" stitched in silver on the seats' black, tectonic fabric. "Oscar Mike" is military slang for "On the Move." Silver stitching accents the leather steering wheel, door fabric, seats, grab handle, door pulls and dash vent rings.

Outside are 17-inch Mineral Gray alloys with grille and bumper inserts in matching gray.

Part of the Wrangler Freedom Edition's $28,165 purchase price and the Wrangler Unlimited Freedom's $30,670 goes to charities to benefit America's veterans.

"It is with both pride in our history and gratitude to all those who have served that we have chosen to donate $250 from each Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition to be divided between these important charitable organizations that benefit current and returning military members," says Mike Manley, President and CEO of the Jeep brand.

The first Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition models are rolling into dealers as you read this.
In March, Jeep showed off its blacked-out Altitude edition Compass, Grand Cherokee and Patriot. Now it's Wrangler's turn get the monochromatic package.

The Wrangler Unlimited Altitude package includes everything the traditional Unlimited Sahara gets, including a body color hardtop and various interior gadgetry. But the Altitude exterior gets either all-black paint or all-black trim on Deep Cherry Red, Black, Bright White or Bright Silver Metallic paint. Unique 18-inch wheels with painted black spokes round out the exterior highlights.

Inside, the seats get black leather with contrasting red stitching as well as black trim on the dashboard and black berber floor mats.

Only 4,500 Wrangler Unlimited Altitude editions will be sold (which doesn't seem that unlimited to us) beginning in May with an MSRP of $33,740. That's more than the Patriot and Compass Altitudes and just shy of the $35,595 price tag on the Grand Cherokee Altitude.

Check out the official press release below for more details.
Continue reading Jeep unveils Wrangler Unlimited Altitude

Jeep unveils Wrangler Unlimited Altitude originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Apr 2012 18:58:00 EST.
Much as it is to any automaker doing business there, China has grown to become a vital market for the Jeep brand. In fact, the Chrysler group's iconic SUV brand sells more vehicles in China than anywhere outside North America. And so to celebrate its success in the Chinese market, Jeep has rolled into Beijing with the customized Wrangler you see here.

What sets this design concept apart from any other Wrangler Unlimited is the dragon motif that dominates throughout. Jeep started with a Rubicon Unlimited, blacked out everything from the fenders and bumpers to the wheels and roof and applied bronze-gold dragon decals to the hood and left flank, the spare tire cover, the unique carbon-fiber engine cover and the interior. Bronze-gold trim complements throughout, with a gold and black leather interior with gold snakeskin bolsters to top it all off.

More than a simple decal job, the Wrangler Dragon design concept looks pretty convincing, and if demand in China is high enough, Jeep might even build it. Just don't count on it showing up in your local dealership on this side of the Pacific, though - you'll just have to scope it out in the high-res image gallery above and scroll down for further details in the official press release.
Continue reading Jeep Wrangler Dragon Design Concept slithers into China

Jeep Wrangler Dragon Design Concept slithers into China originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 13:01:00 EST.
Jeep enthusiasts have been asking for a Wrangler pickup for years, and 2011 is the year they finally got their wish - at least in kit form. The only thing that could keep the JK-8 Independence kit from being a success is the $5,499 price, which doesn't include assembly. But it appears that the serious Jeep fans are all-in, and Mopar is stepping up to meet demand.

Wards Auto reports that Mopar's original estimate of 200-300 kit sales was trumped by 400 dealer orders. Team Mopar is reportedly stepping up to meet the demand, as President Pietro Gorlier tells WA that more kits are on the way. Gorlier adds that Mopar continues to be cautious about sales expectations in part because the kits are so large and difficult for dealers to store in any real numbers.

Early demand for the kits, which is also available for the Wrangler Unlimited, also shows Chrysler that a next-generation Wrangler truck could take the market by storm. Gorlier points out that Jeep President Mike Manley has gone on record as saying that the next redesign of the Wrangler could include a pickup option, though no definite plans have been announced.
Mopar pickup kit for Jeep Wrangler a hot seller, coming early originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 16:30:00 EST.
Now that Chrysler is owned by Fiat, Jeep is looking to become a truly international brand, with a primary goal of raising its profile in the European market. As such, it comes as little surprise that Jeep has teamed up with French design studio Style & Design to create a pair of nautical-themed Wrangler Unlimited models at the Paris Boat Show.

For those with a love of the ocean and a heady wind at the sails, there's the White Jeep Wrangler by Style & Design. Said to be inspired by sailboats, the White is highlighted in chrome, which covers the 20-inch chrome wheels, seven-slat grille, door handles and trunk hinges. The interior is swathed in Navy White leather with wooden-deck-style coverings for the floors, dash, console, doors and gearlever.

The Black Jeep Wrangler by Style & Design draws inspiration from yachts and, as its name implies, is black both inside and out with chrome and wooden deck embellishments similar to its lighter sibling. Both machines are also equipped with canvas awnings and a pair of canvas folding chairs.

No details have been given as to what's powering these machines or if there are any chassis modifications, so we're assuming they were left mechanically stock.
Company: Chrysler

Brand: Jeep

Medium: Multimedia

Ad Agency: Global Hue

Product: Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: MW3 Special Edition

Campaign: "Toughest Vehicle in the World."

What We Like: Not all of us are video gamers. But there is apparently a big overlap between Jeep Wrangler buyers and those who worship the most popular video game franchise on the planet: Call of Duty. Jeep's latest ad campaign puts the Wrangler back in the franchise's latest installment, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which went on sale today. This is a sequel to last year's successful partnership between Jeep and Call of Duty: Black Ops. The TV and web advertisements for this new campaign work like trailers for Modern Warfare 3, while the billboard and print ads carry through the look and feel of the Call of Duty world.

Given the Wrangler's history when it comes to warfare, especially World War II, this co-branding is a natural fit. If you are a gamer, it's cool. And even if you aren't a gamer, it looks pretty neat and gives Jeep an alternative environment (apart from mountains and streams) to place the Wrangler. We especially like the copy line in the print ads that says on one page, "Toughest Vehicle in the World," and on the second page, "The Toughest Vehicle in any World."

What We Don't Like: Unless video games that take place amidst warfare aren't your cup of tea, there's not much to criticize here. We can potentially see some of the more environment-loving Jeep enthusiast base not cottoning to the warfare association, but that's probably not enough to get them out of their Wranglers anyway.

Strategy: Zounds! According to numbers supplied by Chrysler, nine million people play Call of Duty every night. That's a bigger audience than those watch Bill O'Reilly and Rachel Maddow combined. This is a slam-dunk deal for Jeep, and the company extends into the real world with a special edition Call of Duty: MW3 Wrangler that sells at a price premium and is over-sold.

Jeep pickup trucks are griffins. Amalgamated kings of all automotive beasts that combine the friendly puppy vibe of a Wrangler with the utility of a cargo box. Ten years ago, American Expedition Vehicles gave the public the original TJ-based Brute at that year's SEMA show, and now the company is reprising that performance and introducing the Brute Double Cab.

Based on the latest JK Wrangler Unlimited, the Brute Double Cab offers more interior space thanks to the extra doors and the larger overall dimensions of the JK-series Wrangler. AEV stretches the frame to a 139-inch wheelbase, and the Brute Double Cab has an overall length of 216 inches - 30 inches more than a regular JK Unlimited. The bed is nearly square, with dimensions of 61 inches long by 60 inches wide (and 44 inches between the wheelhouses), but it's not intended to make a pickup truck replacement out of a Jeep.

AEV thinks the Brute Double Cab is an off-roader with better chops than a 4x4 pickup, and enhanced cargo capacity over what you can get from stock Jeeps. Unlike the JK-8 Independence kit you can buy from Mopar, the Brute Double Cab isn't something you assemble yourself - AEV puts more into its four-door Brute Double Cab than it takes to build the two-door JK-8 kit. The stretched-chassis AEV Brute Double Cab will be available first to current AEV owners as a turn-key vehicle. Once production ramps up, availability will be opened to the public at large. Get the full scoop in the release after the jump.
Continue reading AEV turns Wrangler into Brute Double Cab for SEMA

AEV turns Wrangler into Brute Double Cab for SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 13:32:00 EST.
Chrysler has managed to squeeze a little extra fuel economy from the 2012 Jeep Wrangler. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the model now gets up to 17 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, good for 18 mpg combined when saddled with a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. That's a thirteen-percent improvement over the 2011 model's 15 mpg city and an 11 percent boost over the old bruiser's 19 mpg highway. Not surprisingly, the increases come from the fact that the Wrangler now boasts the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 engine.

The better fuel economy doesn't come at the cost of horsepower, either. In fact, the new V6 rocks 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The old 3.8-liter V6 was only good for a comparatively asthmatic 202 horsepower and 237 lb-ft of twist.

The four-door Wrangler Unlimited shown above has also benefited from the Pentastar engine - its fuel economy has increased to 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.
2012 Jeep Wrangler fuel economy figures improve originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 11:31:00 EST.
In the wholly owned Fiat stable are its eponymous brand, along with Lancia, Abarth, Maserati and Alfa Romeo - plus, as of relatively recently, all of the Chrysler brands. According to Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, of all of those brands, the one with the greatest global cachet is Jeep. Marchionne believes that Alfa had global chops as well, but Jeep remains "first and foremost."

And while Marchionne remains keen on creating global production synergies with his expanding automotive empire, there is at least one sacred cow. According to a new Ward's Auto report, the compulsively sweater-clad CEO has a few words that will make builders of the Jeep Wrangler in Toledo happy - he thinks the legendary SUV's American heritage is too important to risk assembling it in any other country. This is heartening news, as recent chatter had referred to growing global demand putting a strain on the Ohio plant, leading some to think that a satellite production facility could be established elsewhere in the world.
Marchionne insists Jeep Wrangler to stay American-made originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 13:31:00 EST.
Chrysler has finally released a few more details on its Mopar Jeep JK-8 pickup conversion. Wrangler Unlimited owners can purchase the kit for a $5,499, though installation by the dealer will set you back additional coin. Fortunately, the automaker says that any skilled do-it-yourselfer can stitch the pieces onto their vehicle with a little patience.

The conversion includes a steel bed, inner and outer bed sides, sport bar extensions and a fiberglass half-top and bulkhead among other necessary pieces. Jeep says that the kit should help satiate brand loyalists who also want a pickup truck.

Considering that a base Wrangler Unlimited will set you back $25,545, those customers will likely also find themselves wanting a winning lottery ticket. All told, buyers are staring down the barrel of a $31,044 entry price - if they do the work themselves.

It's fairly clear that the JK-8 is meant to share more blood with the CJ-8 Scrambler than a legitimate mid-size pickup, but that doesn't stop it from being pretty cool in our book. Maybe Chrysler will let us help put one together sometime. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Jeep announces new Wrangler Unlimited Pickup... in kit form

Jeep announces new Wrangler Unlimited Pickup... in kit form originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 10:58:00 EST.
The folks over at PickupTrucks.com recently drove a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with Mopar's JK-8 conversion kit, and they got a Mopar engineer on camera to talk about it. To refresh your memory, one kit will be offered for the at-home "weekend warrior" tinkerer, a second kit will be offered for body shops to make the conversion look like it came from the factory. Pricing hasn't been announced, but the engineer said it would be "competitive," although we have no idea what he could be comparing the price too, it should be less than the "two arms, two legs and a testicle" suggested by a PickupTrucks.com commenter.

Finally, the JK-8 package will be available in every color offered on the Wrangler, meaning you won't get it in the concept car yellow. Follow the jump to see it in action and hear more about it.
Continue reading Jeep JK-8 pickup kit smiles for the camera

Jeep JK-8 pickup kit smiles for the camera originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 May 2011 21:57:00 EST.
We're all suitably bowled over by the chest-hair enhancing Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, with its compression-ratio gulping 6.4-liter Hemi V8 booming out 465 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Love it all, but we have trouble seeing anyone on Earth actually realizing its promised 13 percent improvement in fuel efficiency, much less its pie-in-sky 450-mile range. Give us a break, Jeep. Tell us anything, but don't tell us to embrace this new raging V8 as the ecologists' super SUV. It has Track mode, for the love of Pete. Say hello to $5+ fun every 10 or so miles when the SRT8 is driven as Jeep's engineers have clearly intended. Then we dare you to tow anything and afford it. We're by no means damning the utterly awesome SRT8, just saying...

If you read enthusiast outlets, a diesel Jeep has been one of the leading wish-list items, well... forever.

One other recent improvement for Jeep in time for its 70th anniversary - beyond this latest Grand Cherokee lineup that continues to shine - is the nearly 100-percent better (and now nearly competitive) Compass. Then, in the near future, the Patriot and Compass will likely - and rightly - merge into one model, there will be a new entry-level "B SUV" and we suspect the Liberty will return to its proper name, Cherokee. Top all of this off with the promised rebirth of the legendary Grand Wagoneer three-row down the road, and it's all looking right on track.

So, where's the common-rail direct-injected turbo diesel?

The Europeans have just been shown their next-generation Jeep turbo diesels and we had a chance to sample these latest and greatest oil-burners at the Fiat Auto proving grounds in Balocco, Italy. We grabbed the ones we like the most: the Grand Cherokee 4x4 Laredo with 3.0-liter CRD V6 and gnarly-yet-comfortable Wrangler Unlimited Sahara with 2.8-liter four-cylinder CRD and wondrous six-speed manual. Word has it that the Grand Cherokee CRD is set to hit the States by late 2013. The Wrangler in Trail-Rated Rubicon guise with a 3.0 CRD V6 and six-speed manual is many off-roaders' dream chariot, but there is currently no talk of this happy-hour cocktail coming our way or even ever exiting from Jeep's Toledo, Ohio plant. That'd be a pity.

Jeep fans have long clamored for a Wrangler with a pickup bed (ever since the CJ-8 Scrambler, that is), and Mopar appears to have come through with the introduction of the JK-8 Pickup conversion kit. The kit comes in one of two flavors; a show car spec that needs plenty of welding and a high degree of technical acumen and a bolt-on kit for the weekend warrior.

The truck nuts at Pickuptrucks.com were pretty excited about taking a spin in the JK-8 Independence, so they headed to Moab for the annual Easter Jeep Safari. The modded-up Wrangler truck features the JK-8 kit, along with new wheels and tires, a 4.5-inch lift kit and a Dana 44 front axle. The truck site found the Independence to have some awkward proportions, and writer Mark Williams was a bit dismayed that the 50-inch pickup bed didn't feature stronger coil springs to accommodate additional payload capacity.

After some rock-crawling and other activities, Levine and company came away with the impression that the JK-8 Independence handles itself much the same as the Wrangler Unlimited. In other words, the bedded Wrangler acquitted itself off the beaten path just fine.
We've seen Jeep Wrangler pickup trucks before that never had a chance at production. They're the kind of teasing that many die-hard Wrangler lovers just can't handle, so the folks at Mopar are giving owners of the four-door Unlimited a chance to make their own Jeep pickup.

The Wrangler JK-8 Independence is a new Mopar kit that provides a 50-inch pickup truck bed with 44 inches of width between the wheel wells. The folks at Mopar aren't ready to talk price just yet, but they promised two variants of the kit. One is a weld-free bolt-on setup that mechanically inclined Jeep owners can put together "over a weekend." The second is a show-ready kit that can be fitted at the dealership or a specialty body shop. The parts for both kits will reportedly cost about the same, but labor costs for the show truck version will cost extra. The kit will reportedly be available in every color that you can currently get the Wrangler Unlimited.

In all, Mopar tells us the kit includes a bed floor, all the necessary body panels, the fiberglass cap and a new bulkhead. To build your own JK-8 Independence, you'll need to remove all the interior parts behind the front seats. The new body panels will cover the second row entrance, and a short fiberglass cap provides enough covered space for your gear.

The bright yellow JK-8 show truck, which is based off of a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, features a Mopar/Dynatrac ProRock 44 front axle and a stock 44 rear axle with 4.88 gears. Thirty-seven inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain KM2 tires and a 4.5-inch long-arm suspension kit make sure this makeshift truck doesn't get stuck even in the most inhospitable terrain. Special off-road capable bumpers round out the modifications, and all of the above modifications are available straight from the Mopar catalog.

2005 Jeep Gladiator Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Adding fuel to the rumormill fire that Jeep is keen to introduce a small pickup based on its ever-popular Wrangler platform is a new report from our reliable friends from PickupTrucks.com that the project has been given the green light. The news comes just after we heard that just such a machine was shown to dealers with a wink-wink, nudge-nudge-style display.

According to PickupTruck.com's sources, the light-duty hauler would debut in 2012 with a design heavily based on the Jeep Gladiator concept from 2005. To get the necessary length, Jeep is said to be utilizing the four-door Wrangler Unlimited chassis with the deletion of the two aft doors and the addition of a short truck bed.

Here's hoping the final design, if it indeed reaches production, retains the external spare wheel and tire. While we're wishing, we'll cast a vote towards a removable hardtop as well. Regardless, this is one of those cases where we feel pretty confident in saying, If you build it, they will <strike>come</strike> buy.

2011 Jeep Wrangler spy shots - Click above for image gallery

As the most iconic model from a certifiable American institution such as Jeep, it comes as little surprise that every new version of the venerable Wrangler (or CJ if you happen to remember Carter's presidency) causes pangs of distress from Jeep's loyal fanbase. Still, from the square headlights of the original Wrangler YJ to the coil springs of the Wrangler TJ and finally - and easily the most egregious of all in our eyes - the loss of the stalwart 4.0 HO inline-six in favor of the 3.8-liter V6 from a minivan in the latest JK, the Wrangler has continued to sell.

That doesn't seem likely to change for 2011, either. From what we can tell from these few spy shots that were snapped at the Jeep factory in Toledo, Ohio, the biggest external change to the next Wrangler is the inclusion of a color-matched hardtop. This is definitely not a bad thing. We can only hope that the next significant alteration to the tried-and-true off-roader-for-the-masses model includes a new drivetrain. Pentastar V6, please, along with automatic and manual transmissions with six forward ratios each. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

*UPDATE: Thanks to some eagle-eyed readers, we just noticed that these 2011 Wranglers also seem to sport a new, more aerodynamic front bumper design as well. Thanks qwerty777!

Mopar Sketches for the 44th Annual Easter Jeep Safari - Click above for high-res image gallery

Chrysler has announced that it will launch four new "Moparized" (their term, not ours) models on March 27 at the 44th Annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah: the Jeep Wrangler J7, Jeep Patriot Extreme, Jeep Wrangler Trail Boss and Ram Power Wagon.

First off, there's already a 2010 Dodge Ram Power Wagon, but it appears that this version will sport just two doors instead of the current four-door model. We also note plenty of flat black accents, including the wheels, grille and hood, which are set off by what appears to be a neon green stripe. Out back is a customized bed that includes an external fullsize spare tire rack. Ford SVT Raptor fighter? We'll see.

Moving on to the Jeep Patriot Extreme, we see a bright orange (EXTREME!!!) paint scheme highlighted (or is that lowlighted?) by more flat black accents on the grille and hood along with a two-inch Rocky Road Outfitters suspension lift, TJ 'Moab' 16-inch wheels and BF Goodrich KM2 tires. Lest we forget, there's also an uplevel Kicker stereo system and a roof-mounted snowboard rack.

Finally, we have a pair of Wranglers. The first is the J7, which is based on the four-door Unlimited Rubicon model and is "designed to have the basic appeal of military-issued vehicles." The second Wrangler is called the Trail Boss, and all we know about that one is that it's "a two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that is built for serious off-road duty." Check out the high-res image gallery below and hit the jump for the official press release.

Gallery: Mopar sketches for 44th Annual Easter Jeep Safari

[Source: Chrysler]

Continue reading Chrysler releases new "Moparized" concept renderings ahead of 44th Annual Easter Jeep Safari

Chrysler releases new "Moparized" concept renderings ahead of 44th Annual Easter Jeep Safari originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Mar 2010 14:20:00 EST.
If there's one vehicle that has managed to persevere through Chrysler's ups and downs as of late, it's the Jeep Wrangler. This trusty off-roader is still the SUV of choice for enthusiasts who actually need true four-by-four capability, and its iconic design is still very well liked. However, the Wrangler is facing some troubles of its own, as many dealers are now reporting a shortage of hardtop models.

According to Automotive News, parent company Chrysler is stating that a "supplier constraint" is what's causing this overall shortage. Meridian Automotive Systems Inc., the company that originally manufactured the roof units for the Wrangler, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation last year, so production of the hardtops was shifted to a different supplier - Continental Structural Plastics Inc., located in Detroit. Chrysler says that tops are extremely complex to manufacturer, so the move in suppliers has put a significant dent in overall production.

In the meantime, Chrysler is urging dealers to order softtop Wranglers while it works with the new supplier to ramp up production of the hardtop units. During this shortage, we wouldn't be surprised if Wrangler sales dip slightly, since in most markets the vast majority of customers purchase the hardtop models.
