Formula 3 Dallara-Volkswagen

Arguably more than any other automaker, Volkswagen has been the subject of much debate regarding a potential F1 program over the past year or two. The German industrial giant is one of the largest never to have competed in the pinnacle motorsport series. But while previous reports suggested that VW could partner with a specific team, the company's interests now seem to extend far beyond the classical engine-supplier - or even team owner - arrangement that has typified F1 over the course of its history.

According to reports circulating the internet and quoting Hans-Joachim Stuck - a former F1 driver who heads up Volkswagen's racing program - the company is interested in supplying the series with a new "world engine". But just what is a "world engine"?

In parallel to its drive to switch to a small-displacement, four-cylinder turbocharged engine formula for F1, the FIA has been toying with the idea of introducing a single engine that could be used across various motorsport disciplines. The "world engine", as it's been dubbed, could then be used in F1 as well as touring cars, rallying and other disciplines.

What remains to be seen is whether the "world engine" that Volkswagen - a veritable powerhouse when it comes to turbo fours - is interested in supplying would be used exclusively by all the teams or whether each manufacturer (currently including Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault and Cosworth) would each be free to produce its own according to the formula. One way or another, reports indicate that the existing engine manufacturers are decidedly cold on the idea.
Although these turbocharged beasts are what make the heart swoon, the bulk of World Engines engines are much more mundane. With fuel efficiency a top priority these days, the Diamond Star brand will soon be investing some nine-billion yen (US$84.2m) into its engine plant in Japan's Shiga Prefecture, which makes the global four-bangers in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4 liter capacities. Expect to find these engines underhood in various Lancer and Outlander models.

Chrysler group CEO Tom LaSorda says that the company is considering developing a new line of V6 engines -- a decision he expects will be made by the end of the year. The engines will likely fit the Chrysler 300/Dodge Magnum/Dodge Charger platform, which is expected to go through a redesign in 2009. The plants being considered for the business are the Trenton Engine plant in Trenton, Mich.; Toledo Machine in Perrysburg, Ohio; and Kenosha (Wis.) Engine, but Chrysler's big boss says that the UAW has to be willing to change the work rules and stay competitive.

Unlike the company's four-banger that currently hauls around the Dodge Caliber and will serve to power the Jeep Copmass and Jeep Liberty, the new V6 engines will be developed completely in-house. The V6 lineup may also contain a diesel, but that has not yet been confirmed.

Currently, the automaker offers I4s in four vehicles, with another two on the way by the end of this year, but Chrysler is said to be considering adding an option for one in other models that now offer nothing smaller than a V6. One such model may be the 2007 Jeep Wrangler, which is currently available in the US with only a V6 despite a long history of offering a standard I4. Chrysler also limited four-banger availability in its minivan line-up.
