<br />
The second day of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">New York Auto Show</a> festivities have just kicked with the annual World Car of the Year awards, and we've just learned that the top honors for 2013 go to the seventh-generation <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/golf/">Volkswagen Golf</a>. The win marks the second in a row for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a>, which also collected the hardware in 2012 for its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/up/">Up! supermini</a>.<br />

	Judges for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/world car of the year/">World Car of the Year Award</a> have narrowed down the finalists to just four vehicles. Out of a total of 42 entries, only the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/mercedes-benz a-class/">Mercedes-Benz A-Class</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/">Porsche</a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/boxster/"> Boxster</a>/<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/cayman/">Cayman</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/scion/fr-s/">Scion FR-S</a>/<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/subaru/brz/">Subaru BRZ</a>/<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/gt-86/">Toyota GT-86</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/golf/">Volkswagen Golf</a> remain standing. For <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a>, this marks the second consecutive year the company has had an entry among the finalists, and the fourth time since 2009. In order to qualify, a vehicle must be on sale on two continents during the span of time between January 1, 2013 and May 30, 2013. A panel of 66 journalists from 23 countries then vote on the finalists.</p>
<p>
	Three vehicles have made the cut for the last round of voting on the 2013 World Performance Car as well, with the Cayman/Boxster and FR-S/BRZ/GT-86 running against the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ferrari/f12+berlinetta/">Ferrari F12 Berlinetta</a>. Meanwhile, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/renault+zoe/">Renault Zoe</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tesla/model+s/">Tesla Model S</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/v60/">Volvo V60</a> Plug-In Hybrid are duking it out for the World Green Car Award. Finally, the World Car Design of the Year Award is up for grabs between the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/aston+martin/vanquish/">Aston Martin Vanquish</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jaguar/f-type/">Jaguar F-Type</a>, and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mazda/mazda6/">Mazda6</a>. Check out the full press release below. <br />
<div>
	As is tradition, Day Two of the <a href="http://autoblog.com/category/new-york-auto-show">2012 New York Auto Show</a> kicked off with the annual World Car of the Year awards. Global entries competed for honors in four different categories, and from the initial list of 34 contenders, the final four were selected this morning.<br />
	<br />
	The big winner was the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/up">2012 Volkswagen Up!</a> subcompact, which takes home the honor of World Car of the Year, beating out its other finalists, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/bmw/3+series">BMW 3 Series</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/porsche/911">Porsche 911</a>. We've had a chance to drive VW's tiny runabout and, while it would be hard for the automaker to justify offering something this small in the United States (right now), we'd gladly welcome its tossable city dynamics and efficiency here on our shores. With a small bump in power, it could certainly show the <a href="http://autoblog.com/fiat/500">Fiat 500</a> who's boss.<br />
	<br />
	But the Up! wasn't the only car praised in New York this morning. The new 991-series Porsche 911 was named World Performance Car of the Year, besting other nominees like the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/aventador">Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/mp4-12c">McLaren MP4-12C</a>. Stiff competition, for sure, but you just can't match the 911's razor-sharp precision, not to mention that this new 991 model is easily the best 911 yet.<br />
	<br />
	Moving on to a different sort of performance, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/s-class">Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency</a> took top honors for its eco-performance, securing the World Green Car of the Year award. In this segment, the other two finalists were the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/focus+electric">Ford Focus Electric</a> and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid greenlings.<br />
	<br />
	Lastly, the WCOY jury selected the <a href="http://autoblog.com/land+rover/evoque">Land Rover Range Rover Evoque</a> for the World Car Design of the Year - not really a surprise, seeing as how the baby Range Rover has been praised for its styling ever since the day it launched. Our condolences to the Citro&euml;n DS5 and Volkswagen Up! - you guys just aren't pretty enough.<br />
	<br />
	Stay tuned for more details about this year's awards later today.<br />

<br />
On Thursday the 21st of April, the seventh annual World Car Awards were given out in a ceremony at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">New York International Auto Show</a> that was duly covered by Autoblog.<br />
<br />
Full disclosure: I, Matt Davis, European Editor of this online obsession Autoblog, am both a co-founder and co-chair of the World Car Awards, and I intend to shamelessly soapbox herein about the WCAs, at least until the bosses toss me out on the sidewalk.<br />
<br />
The WCAs comprise four awards: World Green Car, World Car Design, World Performance Car, and overall World Car of the Year - known as the WCotY. There is no other widely known award even remotely like this, as all four take into account truly global cars from every region of the world. The overall WCotY, in particular, pits cars of every type from every make on the globe, some of which may not be available in the English-speaking world, against one another and, in the end, we 66 international jurors shake out a winner, two runners-up, and the rest.<br />

<img alt="World Car of the Year Awards" class="right border" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/04/2011-world-car-of-the-year-awards.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px 0px; float: right;" />Big congratulations go to the <a href="http://autoblog.com/nissan/leaf">2011 Nissan Leaf</a> this morning, as it has just been named the 2011 World Car of the Year. The Leaf garnered more votes than the <a href="http://autoblog.com/audi/a8">2011 Audi A8</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/bmw/5+series">2011 BMW 5 Series</a>, the other two finalists for the World Car title. In 2010, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/polo">Volkswagen Polo</a> took home this award.<br />
<br />
The Leaf was not the only super-efficient car to be awarded today, as the <a href="http://autoblog.com/chevrolet/volt">2011 Chevrolet Volt</a> was named Green Car of the Year. Oddly, the Volt was named <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/10/chevrolet-volt-ford-explorer-named-2011-north-american-car-and/">2011 North American Car of the Year</a>, while the Leaf was merely a runner-up.<br />
<br />
In the less-efficient realm of the industry, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/458+italia">2011 Ferrari 458 Italia</a> was named World Performance Car of the Year, and the sleek <a href="http://autoblog.com/aston+martin/rapide">2011 Aston Martin Rapide</a> was given the World Design of the Year crown.<br />

<br />
The finalists for overall Car of the Year are the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/02/23/2011-audi-a8-review-road-test/">2011 Audi A8</a>, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/5+series">BMW 5 Series</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/leaf">Nissan Leaf</a>. The performance category is occupied by the the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/458+italia">Ferrari 458 Italia</a>, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/sls+amg">Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/911+turbo">Porsche 911 Turbo</a>.<br />
<br />
Representing the green catergory are the Nissan Leaf, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/volt">Chevrolet Volt</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/3+series">BMW 320d</a> EfficientDynamics Edition. The green car of the year will be decided by votes from three of the world's top green technology experts.<br />
<br />
The final category in the World Car of the Year competition is design. In that category is the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/aston+martin/rapide">Aston Martin Rapide</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/alfa-romeo/">Alfa Romeo</a> Giulietta and the Ferrari 458 Italia.<br />
<br />
The winner of the World Car of the Year award has to represent some aspects of each category in the competition and will be decided, along with the winners in from the other categories, at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">New York Auto Show</a> on April 21.<br />

The selections for the World Car Awards awarded granted by an international panel of 66 automotive journalists, who have now announced their ten finalists.<br />
<br />
Included on the shortlist are the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/audi">Audi</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/09/officially-official-2011-audi-a1-finally-arrives/">A1</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/audi/a8">A8</a>, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/5+series">BMW 5 Series</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/x3">X3</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jaguar/xj">Jaguar XJ</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jeep/grand+cherokee">Jeep Grand Cherokee</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/sls+amg">Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/leaf">Nissan Leaf</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/cayenne">Porsche Cayenne</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/audi/s60">Volvo S60</a>/<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/v70">V70</a>. The selections were made based on the jurists' experience with each car through the course of their professional work, and each will be tasked with reevaluating the ten finalists before casting their final ballots to be tabulated by KPMG.<br />
<br />
Intriguingly, although the Leaf EV was short-listed, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/volt">Chevrolet Volt</a> didn't make the cut. For an idea of the jurists' tastes, consider the winners from years past: the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> Polo (2010), <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/golf">Volkswagen Golf</a> in (2009), <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/infiniti/mazda2">Mazda2</a> (2008), <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/ls">Lexus LS460</a> (2007), <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/3+series">BMW 3-Series</a> (2006), and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/audi/a6">Audi A6</a> in 2005, the first time the prize was awarded.<br />
<br />
The shortlist will be whittled down to three finalists to be announced at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> next month, followed by the awards to be given out at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">New York Auto Show</a> in April. Follow the jump for the official announcement, and check out our image gallery of the ten finalists below.<br />

A total of six contenders are fighting out in the green car category, including eco warriors like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/volt">Chevrolet Volt</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/hyundai/sonata">Hyundai Sonata Hybrid</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/leaf">Nissan Leaf</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/smart">Smart ForTwo Electric Drive</a>. Those entries are also joined by the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/3 series">BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mercedes-benz">Mercedes-Benz</a> B-Class F-Cell.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the performance car lot is littered with 10 potential winners ranging from the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/rapide">Aston Martin Rapide</a> to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/renault">Renault</a> Megane III. Both <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/porsche">Porsche</a> and Mercedes-Benz managed to snag two spots each on the list, and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/cadillac/cts-v">Cadillac CTS-V</a> sedan is the only American-made product to make the cut.<br />
<br />
And what about the coveted World Car of the Year? Judges have managed to thin that herd to just 10 picks ranging from the Audi A1 to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/grand cherokee">Jeep Grand Cherokee</a>. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/audi">Audi</a> and BMW were the only two automakers to take home two nominations each.<br />
<br />
We can expect a final decision in each of the three categories when the winners are announced at this year's <a href="http://autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show">New York Auto Show</a> on April 21st. If you can't wait that long for your award news, the top three finalists in each category will be announced at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/geneva-motor-show">Geneva Motor Show</a> in March. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/02/01/world-green-and-performance-car-of-the-year-finalists-announced/#continued">Hit the jump</a> for the press releases.<br />

<br />
Awards season is finally winding down with the 2010 World Car of the Year and World Performance Car of the Year being handed out this morning at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">2010 New York Auto Show</a>. After whittling the fields down to three finalists in each category, the panel of 59 international journalists voted one last time to crown the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/worldcaroftheyear">World Car of the Year</a>.<br />
<br />
While the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/prius">Toyota Prius</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/17/geneva-preview-178-hp-volkswagen-polo-gti-revealed/">Volkswagen Polo</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/e-class">Mercedes-Benz E-Class</a> were nominated, it was the Polo that took home the gold for 2010 World Car of the Year. <br />
<br />
On the performance vehicle front, the nominees were the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/audi/r8">Audi R8 V10</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/10/geneva-preview-porsche-911-gt3-r-hybrid/">Porsche 911 GT3 </a>and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/10/geneva-preview-porsche-911-gt3-r-hybrid/">Ferrari California</a>, with the Audi winning top honors. <br />
<br />
They also handed out a Design award for a group of finalists including the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/10/paris-preview-citroen-c3-picasso-unveiled-ahead-of-show/">Citroen C3 Picasso</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/kia/soul">Kia Soul</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">Chevrolet Camaro</a>. That honor went to the Camaro. (U-S-A! U-S-A!)<br />
<br />
The Green category saw <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a>'s line of diesel-powered BlueMotion vehicles beat out the Toyota Prius and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/insight">Honda Insight</a> hybrids. (Die-sel! Die-sel!)<br />
<br />

<br />
On the performance vehicle front, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/audi/r8">Audi R8 V10</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/10/geneva-preview-porsche-911-gt3-r-hybrid/">Porsche 911 GT3 </a>and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/10/geneva-preview-porsche-911-gt3-r-hybrid/">Ferrari California</a> are jockeying for the big prize. We feel sorry for the judges who have to choose from among these three junkers, but we're sure they'll somehow make it fun for themselves.<br />
<br />
Design finalists are the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/10/paris-preview-citroen-c3-picasso-unveiled-ahead-of-show/">Citroen C3 Picasso</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/kia/soul">Kia Soul</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">Chevrolet Camaro</a>, and from the green category we have the previously mentioned Prius, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/honda/insight">Honda Insight</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a>'s BlueMotion diesel offerings. Check back on these pages to see the winners of the individual categories when they are announced in New York on April Fool's Day.<br />

And while we're not yet sure who will take home the big prizes, we do have a short(er)list of nominees for both accolades.<br /> <br /> The field has been whittled down by 59 jurors to 10 possible winners in each category, and the top three finalists will be announced next month at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> ahead of the actual award ceremony at April's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">New York Auto Show</a>. <br />At the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/New-York-Auto-Show/">New York Auto Show</a> this morning, the organizers of the World Car of the Year competition honored four cars that garnered the most votes in their respective categories from an international jury of journalists. While other categories were open to all newly introduced cars, the Green Car of the Year started with a list of 22 significant cars that had been produced in volumes of at least 10 and were in the hands of customers or test fleets. A team of three international experts in the field representing North America, Europe and Asia (including yours truly) examined the list and narrowed it down to five finalists. Among those, the top three vote-getters from the overall jury were the Honda FCX Clarity, Toyota iQ and Mitsubishi iMiEV, with the fuel cell-powered Clarity taking the top prize.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year">2009 World Car of the Year</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc. </small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/09/new-york-2009-and-the-world-green-car-of-the-year-is/">New York: And the World Green Car of the Year is...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 09 Apr 2009 10:19:00 EST. <br />It seems everyone has a car of the year award to give out from the perpetual (and perpetually controversial) Motor Trend version to the North American COTY named at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Detroit-Auto-Show/">Detroit Auto Show</a>. This morning at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/New-York-Auto-Show/">New York Auto Show</a>, the one and only World Car of the Year was named. Actually, four winners were named, an overall victor, best design, best performance and best green car. The only car to make it to the final three in two different categories was the diminutive Toyota iQ that also appeared as the latest <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/08/new-york-2009-the-scion-iq-goes-big-wheels/">Scion concept</a> yesterday.<br /><br />The overall winner chose by the 59 international jurors turned out to be the new VW MK VI Golf, beating out the Ford Fiesta and the iQ. Among the top performance cars, the Nissan GT-R beat out rivals like the Corvette ZR1 and Porsche 911. The top design was between the Citroen C5, Fiat 500 and the Jaguar XF with the 500 taking the beauty contest honors. <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year">2009 World Car of the Year</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2009-world-car-of-the-year/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/04/wcoty--2-1280-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-golf-vi">Volkswagen Golf VI</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-golf-vi/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/00_09golfvw_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-golf-vi/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/01_09golfvw_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-golf-vi/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/02_09golfvw_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-golf-vi/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/03_09golfvw_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-golf-vi/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/04_09golfvw_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc. </small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/09/new-york-2009-and-the-world-car-of-the-year-is/">New York: And the World Car of the Year is...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 09 Apr 2009 09:59:00 EST. The WCotY is determined by the votes of over 50 journalists from countries the world over (none of which works for Autoblog). Some of the finalists include the award-hoarding <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/23/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-nissan-gt-r/">Nissan GT-R</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/05/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-jaguar-xf-supercharged/">Jaguar XF</a>, plus strong entries like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/08/first-drive-2009-ford-fiesta/">Ford Fiesta</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/26/fiat-chrysler-partnership-will-bring-7-new-models-to-u-s/">Fiat 500</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/06/first-drive-2008-audi-a4-on-the-autobahn-and-in-ibiza/">Audi A4</a>. Due to a tie for 10th place, there are 11 finalists this year. Judges will next narrow their choice to the top three vehicles by March 9, and the winner will be announced at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/New-York-Auto-Show/">New York Auto Show</a> on April 9. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/27/top-10-finalists-for-world-car-of-the-year-announced/">Hit the jump</a> to view the the WCotY finalists, along with a short press release.<br /><br />[Source: World Car of the Year]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/27/top-10-finalists-for-world-car-of-the-year-announced/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Top 10 finalists for World Car of the Year announced</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/27/top-10-finalists-for-world-car-of-the-year-announced/">Top 10 finalists for World Car of the Year announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 10:57:00 EST. Based on standards of merit, value, safety, environmental responsibility, significance, and emotional appeal, the three finalists were the <strike>Volvo</strike> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/07/24/ford-mondeo-named-car-of-the-year-by-auto-express/">Ford Mondeo</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/04/geneva-2008-mazda2-loses-a-couple-of-doors-gets-even-cooler/">Mazda2/Demio</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/05/new-york-auto-show-2008-mercedes-benz-c-class-us-debut/">Mercedes C-Class</a>. Don't read any further if, for some reason, you don't want to know what the 2008 World Car of the Year is and you haven't seen the photo above: the Mazda 2/Demio. What we earlier called the squat hatch with the aggressive wedge shape and swooping beltline showed its well-proportioned rump (also our term, and Mazda, feel free to quote us) to worthy competition.<br /><br />In the other categories, the BMW 118d with Efficient Dynamics took home the World Green Car of the Year Award. In what should have been a surprise to no one, the Audi R8 walked off with trophies from both categories in which it was entered: World Performance Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year. Having taken the awards in both categories last year as well (with the RS4 and TT), Audi knowS how to get the judges on its side. Now if it can get one million buyers on its side this year, that will really be a trophy it can brag about.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/20/new-york-2008-world-car-of-the-year-awards/">New York 2008: World Car of the Year Awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 20 Mar 2008 10:36:00 EST. The top vehicles in each of four categories were chosen by an international panel of 47 automotive journalists reportedly committed to carrying out the process with the "...utmost objectivity, credibility, and integrity." Regardless of how spotless the chosen journalist's driving record is, it's still a subjective vote, so don't be dismayed if your favorite chunk of steel didn't make the list this year. Instead, be pleased that the majority of the vehicles are actually available in the States.</p>
<p>Last month, the list included ten vehicles in each category. This week, the distinguished panel whittled it down to three finalists in each category. Check out the finalists in Design, Performance Car and Green Car after the jump. <br /><strong>2008 World Car of the Year Finalists<br /></strong></p>

The LS460 beat out the Audi TT and new MINI Cooper, which were also finalists. The Audi TT, however, did not walk away empty handed, earning a trophy for World Car Design of the Year. Audi earned yet another honor for World Performance Car of the Year, with the RS4 being handed that honor. The RS4 won out over such heavyweights in world performance as the BMW 335i and Porsche 911 Turbo. Finally, the Mercedes-Benz E320 BLUETEC won the award for World Green Car of the Year, earning bragging rights over rival BMW and its Hydrogen 7, as well as the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/05/new-york-auto-show-lexus-ls460-wins-world-car-of-the-year/">New York Auto Show: Lexus LS460 wins World Car of the Year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 05 Apr 2007 09:17:00 EST. We do know, however, it will be either the Audi TT, Lexus LS 460 or new MINI Cooper. The three finalists were recently culled from the list of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/31/world-car-and-world-performance-car-of-the-year-finalists-announ/">semi-finalists</a> we brought you back in January. Those ten cars have been pared down to these three, and on April 5th only one will remain. <br /><br />The Germans (and German-owned) were not only well represented in the list of finalists for World Car of the Year, but also in three other categories for which awards will be given. The finalists for World Performance Car are the Audi RS4, BMW 335i and Porsche 911 Turbo (all German brands). The finalists for 2007 World Green Car are the BMW Hydrogen 7, Mercedes-Benz E320 BLUETEC and Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion (again, all German brands). Lastly, the finalists for the World Car Design of the Year are the Audi TT, Citroen C4 Picasso and Fiat Grande Punto (only one German brand this time, but still). Clearly, German or German-owned brands are the odds on favorite for flying home with some trophy metal. <br /><br />[Source: WCOTY.com via <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/windingroad/~3/102216601/">Winding Road</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/19/world-car-of-the-year-finalists-announced/">World Car of the Year finalists announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 19 Mar 2007 14:29:00 EST.
