1987 Ford RancheroStar - Click above for high-res image gallery

The last time that we spotted today's eBay find of the day, it was cruising along Woodward Ave in Birmingham, MI this past summer. The RancheroStar immediately caught our attention, but evidently the For Sale sign in the window didn't catch enough eyeballs from onlookers. Thus we now find it again.

According to its eBay listing, the creator of this minivan-trucklet died before completing the project, although he apparently had some pretty serious plans for it going forward. The truncated 1987 Ford Aerostar currently has its stock front V6, rear-wheel drive (not front-wheel drive as in the listing) configuration, but the deceased creator had plans to eventually replace it with a mid-mounted 460 cubic-inch V8. Apparently, the bodywork as it stands today is all metal, with no fiberglass or dreaded Bondo. From what we saw briefly at Woodward, the vehicle seems to be well executed for as far as it got.

If you are interested in an oddball project to complete, this one might be worth checking out. At this point, there aren't any bids, so you might get a good deal. If you do pick it up and complete it or at least paint it, let us know and it could get an Autoblog follow-up. Thanks to Scott for the tip!

Gallery: Woodward 2009: The Weird and the Wonderful

[Source: eBay]
eBay Find of the Day: 1987 Ford RancheroStar originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 17:20:00 EST. 2009 Motorsports Hall of Fame of America inductees - Click above for high-res image gallery

Talk to most gearheads about induction and they'll be picturing turbos and superchargers. But at this year's Woodward Dream Cruise, seven legendary figures from American racing were chosen for induction of another kind - into the Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Not to be confused with the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America is located in Novi, Michigan, on the outskirts of Detroit. This year's induction ceremony, however, was held at the old Fillmore Theater in Detroit proper, where Kenny Bernstein, David Hobbs, Scott Parker, Les Richter, Al Unser, Jr., H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler and Joe Weatherly were officially inducted.

Known as the King of Speed, Bernstein is a four-time Funny Car champion and was the first in NHRA history to break 300 mph. Bernstein was inducted by NHRA president Tom Compton. A former SCCA Trans Am champion and F1 driver, David Hobbs was inducted by his fellow Speed Channel presenter Bob Varsha. Scott Parker scored 94 wins and nine dirt track championships for Harley-Davidson, whose chief Willie G. Davidson inducted him. Former pro football player Les Richter was inducted by Roger Penske for his revival of the Riverside International Raceway and activities as a race organizer.

Former CART champion and two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser, Jr. was inducted by his father. Humpy Wheeler's management of Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte earned him his place, presented by racing broadcaster Ken Squier. And finally, Joe Weatherly was posthumously induced by stock car legend Ned Jarrett for his numerous titles both on motorcycles and in NASCAR. Follow the jump for more details in the full press release.

Everybody has their own definition of cool, and the Woodward Dream Cruise may be the ultimate microcosm for the wide-ranging tastes of auto enthusiasts. While most cruisers show up with classic muscle cars or perfectly preserved classics, automotive outliers seem to prefer more abstract expressions. We just so happen to love both - because it just isn't a party without the guy with the lampshade on his head.

The 2009 show was no different from past Dream Cruises, with interesting rollers like the bizarre and fascinating BMW Isetta to the disturbing and controversial harbinger of death. If you want the precursor to the DeLorean, Woodward gives you the Bricklin SV1. Heck, you can have the classic Time Machine too. While we know they may be passe, how can you lose with elephantitis of the Truck Nutz?

These days, Twitter is all the rage as a means for the digitally inclined to communicate their thoughts in bursts of 140 characters or less. However, that 140 character limit is positively verbose compared to an older and more established means of short messaging. Drivers long ago realized that certain combinations of letters and numbers could be used to send messages in less than seven characters. One of this blogger's all time favorites was a classic Lamborghini Countach with the plate IXLR8.

While that particular Lambo didn't appear at this year's Woodward festivities, there were plenty of other interesting messages sent out. As far as we're concerned, the best plates are the ones that don't take too much brain power to decipher. Sometimes, the license plate phrase reinforces something about the car's behavior - such as the FASSST plate on one Cobra. Other times, drivers use onomatopoeia like the BRMBRUM plate on another Shelby snake. Still others, such as the LVNGLYF plate we saw on a Lotus Elise, are more descriptive of the car's driver. Check out our entire gallery below of interesting plates from the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise.

As we've come to expect from the Woodward Dream Cruise, the vast majority of the vehicles taking part are classic muscle cars from Detroit's heyday in the 1960s and 1970s. Naturally, we had no trouble filling our memory cards with images of rumbling V8-powered Camaros, Mustangs, GTOs and Trans Ams.

While the slow speeds didn't allow these big-inch muscle cars any tire burning or stoplight-to-stoplight antics, we still got to appreciate all those cubes via the ground shaking and unburnt hydrocarbons emitted from their tail pipes as we walked down the avenue. Take a good look at our high-res image gallery below for the best muscle cars from the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise.

What exactly determines if a car is a "classic?" That's probably an infinitely debatable subject that could spark any number of answers from a given group of enthusiasts. For the purpose of this post, a classic is anything that came before the 1964 GTO kicked off the muscle car era. Sure, it's an arbitrary definition, but it allows us to create yet another interesting gallery of cool cars that drove up and down Woodward Avenue here in Detroit this weekend. So sit back, relax and enjoy the gallery below of classic cars from the 2009 Dream Cruise.

Someday, many decades from now, after all historical records of the late 20th and early 21st centuries have been extinguished by the great internet crash of 2012, someone will be trying to figure out what happened. As paleontologists are combing through the remainder of scrap yards for clues about what we did here, they may come to the conclusion that the Shelby Cobra was the second most produced car of all time after the VW Beetle.

The reality, of course, is that the real Shelby Cobra is exceedingly rare, but the look may well be the most replicated of all time. There are also plenty of Ferrari and Lamborghini "replicas" that are mutated to fit on existing platforms like the aforementioned Beetle and the Pontiac Fiero, but the vast majority of the faux-Cobras look so much like the real thing, that all but the most dedicated observers cannot tell the difference without close inspection.

In a little corner off Woodward Ave just south of Maple Rd. were at least two dozen "Cobras", and not one appeared to be the real thing. None the less, these are generally blindingly fast cars and usually just as thrilling to drive as one of Carroll's babies.
For the most part, the Woodward Dream Cruise is all about recognizing the best cars, trucks and motorcycles that America has to offer. That said, there's plenty of four-lane roadway to go around and cars from other countries are certainly welcome. For instance, we saw plenty of classic machines from the likes of MG, Triumph and Fiat that provided something different to look at from the normal Camaros and Mustangs on Woodward. We also saw an old Woodie-style Morris Minor that we couldn't help but snap a few pictures of. Check out the rest of the European cars from the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise in our gallery below.
The Woodward Dream Cruise is generally considered the province of muscle cars and hot rods. However, the event is open to all comers... and come they do. So that means in addition to the usual assortment of classic machines and muscle cars, we get to see an array of exotics and other assorted high performance machinery.

Ferrari, Aston Martin, De Tomaso, Lotuse - these were are all designed to traverse motorways and canyon roads at elevated velocities. However, when they hit Woodward Ave., speed is not part of the plan in any way, shape or form. Regardless, it's fun to see these machines moving at a pace that lets you actually take in their visual appeal.
Back in the waning days of the Carter administration, Chrysler was in an all-too-familiar position. The company was on the verge of insolvency with a lineup of products that almost no one wanted. That time, they just managed to avoid bankruptcy court. But as the company got a batch of government-backed loans, they were proclaiming a new line of cars that would pull them out of the gutter. Before long, the K-cars arrived and for the next decade most of the company's lineup was derived from those roots.

Today, fresh out of bankruptcy court, engineers are scrambling to finish a fresh lineup as management is telling the world, "Wait till you see what's coming next!" Only this time, the origins lie in products from Italy instead of Highland Park, MI. There are a decent number of Fiats floating around steamy Woodward Ave. today, although none so far are of the contemporary type that we expect to see badged as Chryslers soon. In fact, most are even older than the assorted K-cars also plying the pavement.
As we strolled down Woodward Ave. this morning shooting all the the wild and wacky machinery idling along, we spotted a little gray Chevy Cobalt on the opposite side of the street. While everyone is welcome to participate in the Woodward Dream Cruise, this was no ordinary Cobalt. It sprouted an absurdly tall rig from its roof that instantly gave it away as a Google Street View machine. It's not clear if the driver was just enjoying the ride or actually collecting data that will appear in Google Maps soon, so we'll be checking frequently in the coming weeks to see if the Woodward Dream Cruise has gotten the Google treatment.

Of the two American automakers put through a government-sponsored bankruptcy, Chrysler was the only one with a factory-sponsored booth here at the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise. We took a stroll through the giant parking lot at 13 Mile and Woodward Ave. to see the sights and capture the views through the lenses of our digital SLRs.

Naturally, there were plenty of new cars from Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep on hand along with a good supply of classic Mopar musclecars and classics. Present among the interesting cars and trucks was the actual Viper ACR that set the current lap record on the Nürburgring for a production car of 7:22.1. There were also a number of concept cars from years past, including a V10-powered Challenger and many custom Wranglers. See for yourself in our high-res gallery below.

Gallery: Woodward 2009: Chrysler Booth Tour

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Jeremy Korzeniewski / Weblogs, Inc.
Woodward 2009: Chrysler Booth Tour originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 15 Aug 2009 13:52:00 EST. But here at Autoblog we know you can't all get here to Detroit. We'll of course be providing you lots of posts and photo galleries all day long as always. In addition for the third straight year, we're doing a live video stream of the action down on the street. You can watch cruisers heading up and down Woodward (which way is up anyway?) from 10-4 today. The stream is after the jump so open it up in a new window and keep checking back for closeup action from Woodward as well as our crew at Pebble Beach.
This August offers plenty of action for all types of car lovers. The Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance launches the month in style, along with the SEMA Show 'n Shine half a continent away in Pasadena. For folks who are going to be near Reno, the annual Hot August Nights show hits the biggest little city in the world this month as well. The biggest events for the Autoblog crew (as well as thousands of others) will be the Woodward Dream Cruise and the week-long classic car fest in Monterey, California, capped off by the world-renowned Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

There's lots of racing action, too, most notably the return of seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher to the cockpit for Ferrari in Spain. The world's premier racing series also visits Spa at the end of the month. Meanwhile, ALMS makes stops at Mid-Ohio, Road America and Mosport; IndyCar hits Kentucky, Mid-Ohio, Infineon Raceway and Chicago; and NASCAR fans can look forward to races at Pocono, Watkins Glen, MIS and Bristol.

If none of those events appeal to you, check the Google Calendar after the jump for even more listings, all with detailed info and links. Even the wildly popular Woodward Dream Cruise has been hit by the region's economic despair. Several sponsors have reportedly dropped out, and some participating cities have scaled back their participation in light of budget shortfalls.

In an effort to raise more money for the Dream Cruise, the classic car extravaganza will take on a new name for 2009. The cruise will now be called the Woodward Dream Cruise presented by the MotorCity Casino Hotel. The casino, which is owned by the Detroit-based Ilitch family (Little Caesers/Detroit Tigers/Red Wings owners) is increasing its sponsorship profile in order to attach its name to the event. With over one million people from all over the world attending the event, the sponsorship will also give the casino some big-time exposure. The Detroit News is reporting that Dream Cruise officials are still looking to obtain two more sponsors in advance of the event's August 15 date. Good luck with that, fellas.

[Source: The Detroit News]
Cashing In: Woodward Dream Cruise gets new name originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Jun 2009 08:58:00 EST. After all, 40,000 or so classic cars are expected to descend on the historic Woodward Avenue just south of the Motor City whether Birmingham has representation on the Dream Cruise's Board of Directors or not. Officials representing the Cruise, though, don't quite agree with this assessment.

The Detroit News reports that Dream Cruise board President Greg Rasse sent a not-so-friendly letter to Birmingham City Manager Tom Markus requesting that the city cease-and-desist using Woodward Dream Cruise logos and event name when promoting its own event, which is scheduled to run concurrently with the official Dream Cruise. Not terribly surprising, given that Birmingham's departure from the Dream Cruise Board means that the city is not paying the Board or its Executive Director any money.

No matter what happens, the show must go on, as they say, and we'll be there as always this August with digital SLRs in tow and live streaming video of all the action. We don't imagine that many of those attending the Cruise in 2009 will notice the difference, and we hope the organizers and the locales involved can get along well enough not to ruin an enjoyable event.

[Source: The Detroit News]
Shades of Champ Car/IRL: Birmingham exits Dream Cruise, starts own same-day event originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 08:29:00 EST. Ironically, it was the first year that the longstanding event officially entered the Motor City itself. Next year, the Dream Cruise will retreat back across 8 Mile and out of Detroit. Why? The economy, of course, as it seems the Detroit-specific programs didn't earn enough money to repay the costs associated with promoting and running them.

The good news is that the 2009 edition of the Dream Cruise is still on schedule to run on a hot, humid Woodward weekend in August, and Autoblog will be there to bring you live coverage as always.

[Source: Detroit News]
Woodward Dream Cruise retreating back across 8 Mile originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 28 Feb 2009 13:57:00 EST. Auto Shows
If you're the type who disappears on the weekend only to spend your first hour of work on Monday morning going through all the posts you missed on Autoblog, well, then you missed a lot this past weekend. In addition to our extensive coverage of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and all the events that occurred in Monterey, we also took you to Detroit for the 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise. Below you'll find a comprehensive yet easy to navigate group of our posts and galleries from the Dream Cruise. Be warned, it may take longer than usual to absorb everything you missed this weekend, but it's absolutely worth it. Below you'll find booth tours for each of the Detroit Three, and there's lots more after the jump. Enjoy and we'll see you next year on Woodward Ave.

GM Booth Tour - Post | Gallery
Ford Booth Tour - Post | Gallery
Chrysler Booth Tour - Post | Gallery
Continue reading Woodward 2008: Monday morning recap

Woodward 2008: Monday morning recap originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Aug 2008 08:54:00 EST. Sometimes the parts are cool enough to stand on their own. We took a lot of pics - a LOT - yesterday while walking up and down Woodward Ave., though most were of cars driving past us quickly. In that split second we have to snap a pic, there's no time to savor those special elements that separate great cars from merely good ones. Things like fins, vents, badges, grilles, and gauges are often what we remember most about the cars we see during the Woodward Dream Cruise. Fortunately we found a few parking lots filled with parked cars yesterday and took some time out to inspect them with our DSLRs. Below you'll find a gallery of our best detail shots from the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Gallery: Woodward 2008: Details are everything

Woodward 2008: Details are everything originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Aug 2008 18:02:00 EST.
