The Woodward Dream Cruise is billed as the largest one-day automotive event in the world. Around 1.5 million people show up on a Saturday each August and line both sides of a seven-mile stretch of historic Woodward Avenue in the outskirts of Detroit. They come to watch some 40,000+ classic, custom and muscle cars cruise all eight lanes of road at little more than idling speed. Begun only in 1995, the Cruise feels like it's been happening since the golden era of Detroit that it honors. For Detroiters, it's become a way of life. For everyone else, it's high up on the list of 1,001 Car Things To Do Before You Die.

We sent Jessi Combs to the D during Woodward week to experience the event for herself and report back for The List. As we suspected, she encountered all types of native Detroiters who love the Woodward Dream Cruise, as well as some anti-Cruisers who don't share that sentiment. Sans Patrick for this episode, Jessi met up with Autoblog/AOL Auto's own Scott Burgess, who was participating in the Cruise in his own 1964 Chevy Corvair Convertible.

It's practically impossible to explain the scope of the Woodward Dream Cruise that takes place every summer in Detroit to someone who's never witnessed it themselves. Here at Autoblog, we've tried using image galleries, stationary camera feeds and even a live stream attached to a Chrysler minivan in an attempt to bring Woodward coverage to the masses. Sadly, none of these efforts has proven particularly successful at conveying the actual happenings.

Watch the video down below and you'll understand why. There are miles and miles of roadway with as many as five lanes of traffic clogged with every kind of car imaginable - modern machines and classic creations on two and four wheels from American, European and Japanese manufacturers. Adding to the spectacle are a few hundred thousand spectators lining Woodward Avenue or driving their cars through the traffic. Don't forget that the Detroit Three all have some sort of official presence, too, and did we mention that it starts early in the morning and lasts until well past bedtime?

That explanation out of the way, allow us to congratulate Autoweek on its inventive idea: a radio-controlled helicopter with a professional pilot. While we still firmly believe that the Woodward Dream Cruise needs to be witnessed live for the full effect, the aerial coverage you'll see below may be the next best thing.
Continue reading Get a heli-sweet overhead view of the 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise

Get a heli-sweet overhead view of the 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 19:58:00 EST.
Dan Akerson will be taking a final parade lap at this weekend's Woodward Dream Cruise. No, much to the chagrin of the punditry, he's not stepping down as CEO of General Motors, just driving his 1958 Chevrolet Corvette for the last time before sending it off to auction for charity.

Akerson's benevolence will benefit Habitat for Humanity Detroit, which is fighting urban blight in the city's Morningside Commons neighborhood on the east side. GM's CEO has already given Habitat a million bucks this year, according to the press release. Details of when and where the car will be sold "will be announced shortly."

Clearly Akerson wants to be a role model for the sort of corporate stewardship GM sees as necessary to revitalize its hometown. Scroll down to see video of the car.
Continue reading Akerson auctioning off personal 1958 Corvette for charity [w/video]

Akerson auctioning off personal 1958 Corvette for charity [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 18:32:00 EST.
Owning and driving an older vehicle requires a certain amount of faith. You need to believe somewhere deep down inside of yourself that you're going to get where you're going without erupting into a ball of flame, getting run down by the Suburban-wielding soccer mom on her cell phone in the next lane or perishing from heat stroke. You also need to have faith that when you hit the key, your old car/truck/motorcycle will come to life, even if there's a precedent for the contrary. You also need to believe that humanity will help you out should the fates frown on you. Chevrolet seems to understand this, and this year, the company will campaign a handful of Rescue Squad Chevrolet Silverados at the Woodward Dream Cruise.

The truck will be packed with technicians from Matthew Hargreaves Chevrolet and Les Stanford Chevrolet who will help owners of any brand who need an assist with light repairs such as flat tires, dead batteries and the like. The Woodward Dream Cruise is set to kick off on August 18. Check out the press release below.
Continue reading Chevrolet using Service Squad Silverado for roadside repairs during Woodward Dream Cruise

Chevrolet using Service Squad Silverado for roadside repairs during Woodward Dream Cruise originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 18:32:00 EST.
If the muscle car era started in 1964, only to be reinvigorated in the last decade or so, we need a tidy way to label all those memorable cars that came before or don't have the massive cubic inch engines needed to qualify for the muscle category. We'll just call 'em classics.

In the gallery after the break, you'll see a smattering of old Fords, some turned lovingly into hot rods, along with old Cadillacs, Corvairs and convertibles. There's the scattered Studebaker and even a few surprises... like The Most Interesting Man in the World.

We've gone ahead and labeled our classics gallery to the best of our abilities, but a few of these could be off by a year or two and some are pretty much identifiable due to their extreme modifications. No matter, each one is a certified classic - we hope you enjoy the gallery, and we'll see you next year in Woodward!
Classic American cars collect to Cruise originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST.
What separates an old car from a classic? In many cases, not a lot. Beautiful sheet metal, a legendary powertrain or world-class performance could make a world of difference, and so can attention to detail.

We're suckers for a well-stamped curve, an intricate chrome grille or even an elegant hood ornament. And then there are the engines. You won't find many plastic covers in these beautiful bays, but you will find plenty of interesting details and, in some cases, a boat-load of chrome.

We strolled the streets of Woodward with cameras in hand to capture some of the best and brightest details from the 2011 Dream Cruise. Click on the image gallery above to browse everything from the grille of a Rolls-Royce to the engine bay of a Mustang signed by Jack Roush.
Taking time to enjoy the little things originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 17:29:00 EST.
When we think Woodward Dream Cruise, thoughts of muscle cars and golden oldies pass between our ears. But while we're all about the painstakingly restored classics, there is always a little room in our hearts for anything emanating from the land of misfit rides.

Whether you're talking about Elvis himself, a murdered out Dodge Grand Caravan, a perfectly restored Merkur XR4Ti (who does that?) or a run of-the-mill Pontiac Grand Prix emblazoned with airbrush artwork from the band Kiss, Dream Cruise 2011 featured more than its fair share of automotive oddities. We even saw a Gremlin, and it was still running! And the Ford Thunderbird with the ill-conceived aero kit? You may want to skip that one.

We can go on all day, but you're better off if you simply click on our image gallery of the strange sights from the 2011 Woodward Dream Cruise.
Showcasing the strange sights of the Woodward Dream Cruise originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 10:58:00 EST.
Let there be no doubt: Classic American muscle cars are the bread and butter of the Woodward Dream Cruise. And why not? These machines hearken back to a time when horsepower was king, nameplates like Mustang, Camaro, GTO and Charger first started rolling off the tongue and Detroit was at the forefront of the automotive world.

That said, we've noticed an interesting trend over the last several years. Modern muscle is making up a more significant portion of the festivities than ever before, a fact we can surely attribute to the rise in quality and performance of today's crop of high-horsepower offerings. Naturally, you'll see plenty of Detroit muscle from the 1960s straight on through today in this gallery from the 2011 Woodward Dream Cruise.

We'd like to take a moment to explain our definition of muscle cars. We're mostly cutting Detroit's history into two segments: classics and muscle, using 1964, the inaugural year of the seminal Pontiac GTO, as the dividing line. Two seats, four seats or five; two doors or four; modern or vintage - these are the cars that place straight-line performance above all else... and we love 'em for it.

We went ahead and labeled each vehicle, but if we're off by a year or two on some of them, we apologize in advance to all you hardcore muscle car enthusiasts out there... With all that in mind, enjoy the gallery!
Muscle cars light the fires at the Dream Cruise originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 19:57:00 EST.
In case you hadn't noticed, Detroit is smack dab in the middle of America, and what is America if not welcoming? While the Woodward Dream Cruise may celebrate the heyday of The Motor City's own brand of classic machinery, there's a good bit of foreign influence as well.

From Porsche and Volkswagen to Bentley and Rolls-Royce, Europe is very well represented indeed. Japan may not be quite as commonplace on the streets of Woodward, but we did come across a smattering of offerings from Nissan (and also its earlier Datsun form).

And then there are the truly rare breeds - like Austin Healey, De Tomaso and TVR - mingling right alongside such hallowed performers as the Ford GT and Dodge Viper. See all that and plenty more in our image gallery of imports and exotics from the 2011 Woodward Dream Cruise.
Detroit welcomes imports and exotics originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 18:59:00 EST. We're here at the 2011 Woodward Dream Cruise and instead of doing our usual from-the-office live stream, we've decided we're takin' it to the streets - literally. We've strapped a camera to the side of a 2011 Chrysler Town & Country minivan and will be doing laps up and down Woodward Avenue to bring you the sights of the Dream Cruise right from the street view.

From our live stream, you'll see plenty of classic machinery, mostly from right here in the Motor City. From muscle cars to sports cars and massive pickup trucks, there's plenty here for any kind of automotive enthusiast.

If you can't be here yourself, we're offering you the next best thing, with help from our friends at LiveU and ReplayXD.

The Autoblog faithful knows that every year we attend the Woodward Dream Cruise, and every year we set up a live stream on the web that shows you a view of the street. We like to do it for the people who've never been to the Dream Cruise and seen the majesty of this great American motor event. But the only view of the street we could get in the past was from an office building off the main drag. The shot was narrow, far away and static - not good enough. So this year we're doing something different. This year we'll be streaming live from within the action on Woodward Ave.

Thanks to advances in modern technology, as well as help from our friends at ReplayXD and LiveU, we're going to live stream a view from inside the thousands-strong traffic jam of muscle cars, classics and exotics participating in the Woodward Dream Cruise. We'll be sticking a ReplayXD 1080 camera on the top of a car, pointing it behind us, and sending a high quality stream to our Ustream channel through a LiveU portable uplink pack. You'll be able to see Woodward like you were sitting in the back seat.

Also, AOL Autos has kicked off Detroit Week, a hub of content celebrating the Dream Cruise and Detroit sheet-metal, including a video that riffs on the infamous Emiinem Super Bowl ad for Chrysler. You can see all that content here.

Chevrolet has inked a three-year deal to sponsor the Woodward Dream Cruise starting this year as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations. The arrangement means Chevrolet will enjoy an enormous showing at the next three Dream Cruises, with past, present and future models getting to bask in the limelight.

This year, the company will host a flotilla of its classic models, joined by some of its future performance products and the current Chevrolet Equinox, Volt, Cruze, Camaro and Corvette. To keep things exciting, Chevy will roll out a pre-production version of its upcoming 2012 Camaro ZL1 hot rod. That's certainly something worth looking forward to.

Sponsoring the Woodward Dream Cruise will put the Golden Bowtie front and center and it means the company will have a captive audience on its home turf to advertise, celebrate itself and get feedback on upcoming models. As always, you can expect a full suite of coverage right on these pages.

Just a few of the specs: eight batteries, one toaster, one microwave, one DVD player, one VCR, five exterior cameras and a "secondary auxiliary defroster." Oh, and one really, really funky hat, under which exists one heck of a hair style. Those are the things you'll find in and around the Stearus 2000, the creation of a real-life Captain H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock that debuted at this year's Woodward Dream Cruise. (How in the heck did we miss this one?)

The name is a combination of the words "Steve," its inventor, and "Taurus," the car. Steve is from Marine City, Michigan, a town that obviously breeds one-of-a-kind folk. He has almost as many quotable lines as his car has features (one of our favorites: "I also have a hammer"), so do yourself a favor and follow the jump to hear about the Stearus 2000 in his own words.

Nestled between the classic and muscle cars at the Woodward Dream Cruise are vehicles that turn heads for very different reasons. At some point in the history of the Dream Cruise, the fleet of quirky cruisers became as big a spectacle as a '32 Ford Coupe or a '57 Chevy. To be honest, we wouldn't have it any other way because these often ludicrous machines bring a smile to our faces during a hard day's work of covering the cruise.

This year, we spotted such fine rides as a Volkswagen Beetle that hinges to open like a Hungry Hungry Hippo (above), an Econoline van with a stripper pole and a late-model Monte Carlo with Lambo doors. That's just three among the dozens of misfits we found trolling the streets of Woodward yesterday. Browse the gallery below for some high-res perspective on how to raise eyebrows while cruising the Woodward strip.

Every year, the muscle car is the most well-represented vehicle type at the Woodward Dream Cruise. And with good reason: These burly V8-powered steeds reinforce Detroit's legend as the Motor City.

As we discussed in our post on Woodward's classic cars, we've kinda sorta arbitrarily split American automotive history into two parts, using 1964 as the dividing line. Everything post-1964 is a muscle car... at least for our purposes. With that in mind, take a look at a bunch of classic Mustangs, Chevelles, Corvettes and, of course, Pontiac GTOs in our high-res image gallery below.

There's no doubt that classic cars make up the bulk of what keeps us coming to Detroit to cover the Woodward Dream Cruise year after year. But what makes a car a classic?

That question is as debatable as ever, but for the purposes of our coverage this weekend, we're calling a classic anything built before 1964 or so. That's around the first year you could buy a Pontiac GTO - what many consider to be the first true muscle car - and the end of what we're calling our classic car era.

Yes, it's a bit arbitrary to divide all these vintage vehicles into two groups, but there's just too many for one gallery! So here's the first, our gallery of pre-1964 (or so) classics. Post-1964 (or so) muscle cars will follow, so get through the gallery below and we'll bring the muscle a little later.

We aren't the biggest fans of most vanity plates. At the Woodward Dream Cruise, however, there are plenty of witty, snappy and mildly inappropriate plates to be seen, and we can't help but laugh (or at least chuckle quietly) at some of these creative tags. After all, it's one thing to cruise Woodward Avenue in a PT Cruiser with wood paneling and flame decals, but having a vanity plate that reads "HOTWOOD" really completes the package.

We found all sorts of interesting letter combinations at this year's cruise, which you can see for yourselves in the high-res gallery below.

Not everything that trawls the potholes of Woodward Ave. during the Dream Cruise was made in America. A lot of the cars aren't from around here; they're imports. We're not just talking about Japanese cars, either. The imports at Woodward often hail from Europe, and are just as classic as anything that Detroit screwed together.

Truth be told, we didn't capture as many foreign cars as we would have liked between dodging raindrops and trying fill all of our other galleries. But we went ahead and built a high-res gallery with the shots we got because, well, we got some really good ones of classic Porsche 911s, and we figured the Porschephiles among you could use some new desktop wallpaper. Enjoy!
