In the category for best misuse of hydraulics, this car definitely takes the trophy. There were a couple of honorable mentions but nothing quite as extreme as this example. The S10 with the 30-degree starboard list might have been in the running had it demonstrated the ability to this sort of dog-next-to-a-fire-hydrant maneuver, but it was rather pedestrian by comparison. Plus, this one is all sparkly-shiny! I suppose if you're going to add this much bling to your car's normally unseen undercarriage, just have to show it off.

Honestly, we have no idea what you're looking at above. In fact, we couldn't tell you much about many of the vehicles in this gallery because they defy classification. A low-rider semi? A V8 Isetta? Widebody GTO? Seriously? We can't tell you what compels people to create these oddities, but we're certainly glad they did. Cruising amongst the various cars down Woodward this weekend were quite a few machines that fit into the Hot Rod genre. Starting with a classic old-school vehicle platform, adding power and lowering it to the ground, the Hot Rod ethos still manages to attract its fair share of gawkers, including those of us wielding cameras. It's with fond memories that we look back on the age of the muscle car, their big-inch V8 engines belching power and burning tires long before it was politically incorrect to do so. Starting with humble mid-size coupe origins, the Pontiac GTO ignited a trend that is just now starting to come back in style after decades of gathering dust in the corner. Still, those classic stoplight predators from the '60s and early '70s get their day in the sun today on Woodward Avenue. Take a look at all the classic American muscle we found in the gallery below.

We've seen everything from Challengers and Camaros to Vespas and Vipers today, but there was only one Heldo. Advanced Automotives' Heldo is a steel tube space frame concept with composite bodywork and a 350-horsepower 32V Cadillac Northstar engine. According to the Advance Automotive website, the rear engine Heldo can reach 60 mph in a mere 4.1 seconds, take 12.2 seconds to hit a quarter mile, and pull north of 1g on the skid pad. We have no way of verifying those lofty performance statistics, but we can tell you that it looks very cool in silver. Some of our favorite features are the gull-wingish doors, crazy thin LED tail lights, and the exposed carbon fiber hood, but the crazy aqua duct side pods may have to go. Will we ever see a production Heldo on public roads? No, but we wouldn't mind if we did. Click on the high resolution gallery below to see the Heldo in all its odd glory.

Sure, the vast majority of vehicles cruising down Woodward Ave. this weekend are of the four-wheeled variety, but motorcycles were well represented as well. The Woodward Dream Cruise isn't all about vintage Detroit iron. Throughout the day you'll see a number of modern machines and expensive exotics wizzing by. The most prolific auto of all today, in fact, was the modern day Mustang (also see our tour of the Ford booth for more Mustangs), which was accompanied by a number of new Challengers and one lone 2010 Camaro kept company by a row of Corvette ZR1s. Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Panoz, Panteras... all accounted for. Check 'em all out in the gallery below. Your next desktop wallpaper might be in there somewhere.

One of the cooler aspects of the Woodward Dream Cruise is that its completely open and unmoderated. It's the ultimate "run what you brung" event. Hundreds of thousands of people sit along the edge of the road and watch everything from bikes to trucks go by and the juxtaposition can be fascinating. Seeing a giant yellow high riding pickup truck with the front end of a Chevy Kodiak bearing down on a custom vinyl wrapped Smart is definitely an interesting sight.

While some of the machines trolling along Woodward Ave. today could easily compete in a Concours event, there are there plenty of others that would be shunned from such places. These machines that have been fixed up and heavily modified from their original specifications fit right in in this environment. Such is the case with this MINI. It certainly sounded meaner than any MINI I've heard and as it passed by I realized why. Apparently the old British lump under the hood had been replaced by something a wee bit more modern, in this case a Honda VTEC engine. We don't have any deets, but the car is for sale so if you're interested it might be worth a call.

The Chrysler booth at the Woodward Dream Cruise is all about two things: muscle cars and Mopar. The Pentastar filled up the massive mall parking lot at 13 mile and Woodward with dozens of classic rides from the '60s, '70s, and today. Among the best examples of Motown Metal were old-school Chrysler 300s, a brilliant orange Dodge Charger equipped with the Super Bird wing, and quite a few vintage Challengers. For some reason the Nassau concept from the 2007 Detroit Auto Show keeps creeping up at all Chrysler events, and it made it's way to Woodward, too. Chrysler also had plenty of chances for Mopar fans to kick back and have some fun, including a massive slot car track, a rock climbing wall and Rock Band. Ford's display for the Woodward Dream Cruise used to be located at 15 Mile, but this year the Blue Oval picked up and moved all the way down to 9 Mile in Ferndale. And when we say 9 Mile, we mean the whole street. Ford's display is literally on the road and stretches for blocks and blocks east of Woodward. The heart of it is Mustang Alley, at the entrance of which are three Ford GTs of varying color and two racing Mustangs turned on their sides so their undercarriages can be inspected up close. Enter Mustang Alley and you'll travel back in time as you stroll down the street. First are the late model pony cars followed by the '90s, '80s and older. Here is where you can also find booths for SVT, Ford Racing, Shelby and ROUSH, as well. Ford only occupies about half a block on the other side of Woodward where a pair of 2009 Ford F-150s flank the Blue Thunder Monster truck. Oh, and behind that is a motorized bull, because nothing says "Ford" like a motorized bull.

As we made our along Woodward Avenue this morning we spotted what may be the ultimate "Cruiser" on the road today. Trolling along right in front of a golden Lamborghini Murcielago was a Gibbs Aquada. For those who haven't been paying attention the Aquada is the latest attempt at an amphibious car. Gibbs recently set up shop in Auburn Hills MI as they try to get this land and sea machine into production. In the meantime when this driver gets to the end of Woodward Ave, he can keep right on driving on into the Detroit River and cruise on.

For the past several years General Motors has been using the Athens Coney Island Restaurant on Woodward Ave. as a base of operations for the Dream Cruise. The parking lot this year is again filled with classic, wannabe classic, and future classic GM machinery, much of it brought out from the GM Heritage Center in nearby Sterling Heights. For those who haven't yet seen the new Camaro in production form, the red RS we saw a few weeks ago is on display here in the parking lot along with a ZR1 in police markings and what must be one of the most yellow first generation Camaros anywhere. The powertrain tent at the back of the lot is filled with past present and future powertrains from the Z11 427 to the two-mode hybrid and even a fuel cell stack. The parking lot area is open to the public all day, so come on down. If you can't make it, check the gallery below.

The 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise takes place tomorrow, and for those unaware, it's one of the largest single day auto events in the world and attendance should be on your list of things to do before you die. The famed Woodward Ave. will swell under the weight of thousands of classics, exotics, muscle cars, custom jobs and some of the weirdest things on four wheels you will ever see on public roads.

We'll of course show you the displays of GM, Ford, and Chrysler that are guaranteed to contain the best gems from each automaker's past as well as their hottest products on sale today. We'll also keep our cameras at the ready for every cool car on Woodward that idles by at 2 mph. We don't actually get a vote on the show America's Got Talent, but if we did we'd award the win right now to the designers and builders of The Dogsled, which makes its initial debut this weekend in Detroit for the Woodward Dream Cruise. Although its final destination is this year's Burning Man out in the Southwestern desert, the NextCruise event, a green-minded cruising alternative running alongside the Dream Cruise, has brought the machine out to play a bit early. Looking over the build pictures, this pedal-powered machine looks like a scaled-down monster truck with its fully-triangulated frame made from steel and its solid axles front and rear. The frame is suspended both by transverse leaf-springs mounted above the axles and coil-overs at each corner. All four riders pedal to power the right rear wheel with the left rear seeing braking duties. Good 'ole-fashioned American ingenuity at its best. We'll see if we can track this thing down while it's stuck in traffic on Woodward Ave. Saturday afternoon.
