What do sharks and the Volkswagen Beetle have in common? No, this isn't a joke. We can't really come up with any uncontrived correlations, but that isn't stopping VW from being the title sponsor of Discovery Channel's 25th annual Shark Week.

But, apparently, VW and Discovery also had some difficulty relating a small, German hatchback to a large, voracious, man-eating fish.

"When Volkswagen approached us asking, what's the next big thing we have going on this year that they can align with, Shark Week was a natural choice," said Scott Felenstein, SVP-ad sales, Discovery Channel in a story on AdAge.com. "Shark Week is Discovery's Super Bowl."

"The biggest task for us was how to integrate VW and Shark Week without it just being tacked on," said Scott Clark in the same story. He's one of the creative directors for the project at Interpublic Group's Deutsch. "We tried to find the similarities between sharks and the Beetle, but there weren't a lot. Instead we took the fun and playfulness of the Beetle on land and brought it under water."

So how do you work Beetle into Shark Week? With a wireframe Beetle shark cage, of course!

"We wanted the integration to be authentic and fit naturally with the Volkswagen brand, imprinting our signature style on Shark Week," said Justin Osborne, general manager, marketing communications, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "The Beetle shark cage plays on the silhouettes of two of the most iconic images, the shark fin and the Volkswagen Beetle."

VW's press release says the "Volkswagen Beetle Shark Observation Cage" will "put viewers in the driver's seat as it cruises along the ocean floor."
That's nothing new, either. F1 has always served as a showcase for pure design in the pursuit of a singular purpose. One creative soul has taken the time to pay homage to F1 race car development over the decades with a unique wireframe animation. The short clip takes us from 1950 to present day, from straight-eight engines to mighty V12 powerplants and the shrieking V8 monsters of today.

Ruf Blacklock, the mind behind the video, has also worked up an awesome infographic timeline detailing the emergence of various technologies over the years. Following the course of the infamous Autodromo Nazionale in Monza, Italy, the timeline shows us exactly how the sport grew from the classic racers of the '50s to the tech-laden machines of today. It's nearly as interesting as the video itself, and you can check it out by clicking on the inset photo above.
Land Rover is officially in love with wireframe artwork. In September of 2010, four artists were commissioned to produce wireframe interpretations of the Range Rover Evoque. For the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Land Rover reached out to artist Benedict Radcliffe for a redux of sorts.

Radcliffe's wireframe take on the Range Rover Evoque is (supposedly) meant to showcase the personalization options available to Land Rover customers. The entire piece can be broken down into several smaller pieces that showcase various options available on the Evoque.
So... how long until this piece shows up at the Tate Modern?
Automotive body design is certainly art, but the expression tends to be curtailed by the demands of commerce. Design a car that leans too far towards pure art, and the market will reject it. The symbiosis of needs has served the automotive industry well for the past century. On the fringes are the folks who perpetrate art for art's sake against the automobile. Most of these works are less accessible, though sometimes, there's a consociation that successfully melds higher concept art with the automobile. We're not talking about growing grass on your Riviera here.

British artist Benedict Radcliffe has created a full size rendering of a Toyota Corolla, making the world a more surreal place. The work is essentially a line drawing of the car rendered in three dimensions. Cool. Radcliffe's previous wireframe Impreza was more in line with the pure art mindset, as the Corolla was commissioned for use in a video production. The white painted sculpture lends the photographs a surreal retouched look, and we're kind of bummed we weren't able to turn up the actual commercial, as the couple of shots of the car on set look impressive with the reflective black floor. We can't help but wonder what they chromakeyed behind it, too.

[Source: Skirmisher.org]

Gallery: Wireframe Corolla

I can see its ribs!
