Henderson also admitted: "We don't have any such plan... but if we did it would be motivated by business rationale, which would be cost, efficiency and speed."

So, where might GM defect to? Detroit Free Press scribe Tom Walsh suggests that Wilmington, Delaware (the city where GM is incorporated) could be a possibility, or even just down the road to Warren, MI near GM's Tech Center complex is located.

Admittedly, a move by GM out of its Renaissance Center headquarters remains unlikely, but Detroit's already skittish residents and politicians are already bristling on the city's airwaves at Henderson's less-than-firm response to the question. What do you think? Answer our poll below.

View Poll

[Source: The Detroit News | Image: Bill Pugliano/Getty]

Will GM consider moving its headquarters out of Detroit? Rather than excoriate the revenue enhancement agent for harassing a man of the people, Warren, MI mayor Jim Fouts was worried that the verbal warning he initially received might be viewed as favoritism by some.

Amidst chatter of questionable sanity, the mayor rang up the police department later in the day, at which point he reportedly demanded to receive a citation. Police obliged the $100 ticket, which Fouts promptly paid by dispatching a staffer to make the cash drop.

The mayor may have rightly assumed that some might view a warning as lopsided justice, but it's not like he was street racing his Dodge Charger. The gesture is clearly garnering good publicity (which cynically, could have been the objective as well). Further, we have to wonder if all the ceremony and special trips by staffers of both the police and the mayor's own office ended up costing more than the $100 he put back into the revenue pot.

At least it wasn't a red-light ticketbot.

[Soure: WXYZ, Photo: Washington Times]

Detroit area mayor gets pulled over, demands speeding ticket originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Apr 2009 17:29:00 EST. On October 1, forty-five interior and exterior designers moved into an abandoned auditorium at the GM Tech Center in Warren, MI and have what sounds like a pretty complete studio operation, from workstations to clay modelers.

Bob Boniface, the design team director, cited the necessary speed of development for the creation of the studio. Once the team sorts out the car's powertrain, they'll work on applying it to other compact models in GM's fleet (hybrid Beat, anyone?). Boniface also said, "For this car to have popular appeal, and for buyers to embrace the new technology, it must look good." An interesting statement only because the Prius doesn't look good and we know how it has sold. However, we for one will be happy to see a clean-sheet hybrid with some good looks to boot.

We're also glad to see -- at least, by the looks of it -- GM devoting the time and resources to getting this car done, and done right. GM has to know how chickens will be needed in order to lay all the eggs its face will be covered with if the Volt isn't delivered as promised and pretty close to on time. It's not exactly a fair standard, but this isn't exactly the usual car, and after all the big talk it took to get here, GM goods to deliver. And it look like they're doing it.

[Source: GM]
Continue reading GM creates design studio to work on future electric vehicles

GM creates design studio to work on future electric vehicles originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 10:57:00 EST.
