I wish my S60 could conjure up a little coffee avatar in the LCD screen like the new S80 can. It'd be even better if it could perk a cup up for me. The new pictogram fun is part of a rollout of new safety features from the Swedish automaker. Coming to Volvo stores before the end of the year should be a Collision Warning with Auto Brake system, Driver Alert Control, and adaptive cruise control. The new safety features will be in the new large Volvos based on the EUCD platform; the S80, XC70 and V70.

Collision Warning with Auto Brake is a descriptively named system that will sound alarms should sensors detect a collision is imminent, and if the driver doesn't react, the system will apply the brakes. Driver Alert Control is a vehicular big brother that keeps an eye on how you're doing. If it detects erratic driving, it will suggest that you take a breather. We bet you could trigger the coffee cup icon by clipping an apex or two and making sharp, decisive inputs to the controls, but then again, Volvos tend to be tuned to allow a bit of entertainment before they say "Ja, shoor, dat's fun, but you could crash, don'tchaknow."

It's very a very HAL 9000 move, having your vehicle admonish you to not drive after drinking, but that's just what the latest version of Nissan's Carwings navigation system for the Japanese market will do. Between the hours of 5:30 PM and 5:00 AM, the navigation system displays "Do not drive after drinking!" for five seconds after startup. During the day, the navi nanny merely gives the stern suggestion of "Let's continue safe driving today." We're almost expecting that firm "Hmm" at the end, like we used to get from our parochial school principal, but alas, there's even less personality in the Nissan than there was in our old pal Frank. Nissan's making an ongoing commitment to reducing drunk driving and increasing road safety, and this system is part of that effort. Anything that can be done to increase safety and reduce intoxication behind the wheel is a good thing, but we'd rather see a blunter message, something like "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that."

You don't need no stinkin' Volvo to experience BLIS(s) -- for 2008, the Buick Lucerne is fitted with lane departure and blind-spot warning systems. The Lucerne offers classic GM big-sedan ethos, with lots of content, wide, cushy seats and restrained, handsome styling. Now, when you're motorvating down the interstate, listening to your Buick 8, an amber lamp will illuminate in the gauge cluster, and a chime will toll three times to indicate you're about to encroach on someone else's road space. If one of the ever present morons on the road decides to hang out in your blind spot, the Lucerne uses proximity sensors behind the rear fascia to detect the car and warn you with an indicator in the side mirror. Buick's safety gear will also be offered on Cadillac's STS and DTS, making GM Luxury that much safer. Now if they could just develop a "blinker on for the last 60 miles" warning system, or a "stay the hell out of the fast lane if you're doing 53 1/2 MPH" light in the cluster, we'd be good. Okay, okay, we'll admit, the stereotyping is stale. Maybe we're just mellowing with time, but we appreciate the merits of a Lucerne.
