Walter Röhrl with 1987 Audi Sport Quattro S1

Pikes Peak. It's one of the most grueling races in the world, climbing steeply uphill some 20 kilometers around 150 curves to the summit at 4,301 meters. These days the course is paved, but back in 1987 it was all dirt. That's when the legendary Walter Röhrl drove the 600-horsepower Audi Sport Quattro S1 up the mountain in a blistering 10:48. Sure, others have done it quicker since, but they've done it on pavement whereas Röhrl did it in the dirt.

Twenty-five years later, Audi is bringing Röhrl and his mighty S1 back to Pikes Peak for a high-speed trip up memory lane. The pseudo reenactment will take place on July 8, but for those not planning a trip to Colorado this summer but are heading to Germany this week, the car is on display at Techno Classica, the mega classic car expo in Essen, with Röhrl himself on hand Sunday, March 25. The Targa Tasmania is a road-rally event that's been running since 1992, taking place, as you may have guessed, on the island of Tasmania. In 2011, this five-day race began in the coastal city of George Town and ended in the capital city of Hobart. The event features both classic and modern sports cars, changing weather conditions and some truly amazing driving talent.

Targa Tasmania has played host to some amazing drivers (such as Walter Röhrl) and equally amazing machines (such as Eric Bana's Beast). Porsche rather conveniently put together a video shot on the last leg of the 2011 Targa, and you can watch it by clicking past the jump. There you'll see Porsche driver extraordinaire Röhrl and others talk about their participation in the rally, and you'll also see plenty of footage of all the little Tasmanian Devils as they wind their way across the island before finally crossing the finish line. Thirty years ago, Walter Röhrl and his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer very nearly won the San Remo Rally, after a comeback that would have been one for the ages. Röhrl and Geistdörfer were up against a field of faster, more powerful four-wheel-drive cars in their rear-wheel-drive Porsche 911 SC, and somehow managed to pull within an eyelash of victory.

Unfortunately, a broken driveshaft forced the pair to retire, leaving Michele Mouton's Audi Quattro to run away with the race. Now, exactly thirty years after their heartbreak in San Remo, Röhrl and Geistdorfer are back in their 911 SC for the five-day, 2000-km Targa Tasmania. The rally starts today, and you can follow Röhrl and Geistdörfer's progress here at Porsche UK.

The car that Röhrl drove in the 1981 San Remo rally was thrown together last minute because he was without a drive until just before the start of the race. The ill-fated San Remo run was the car's only outing in professional competition. For this year's Targa Tasmania, the car was found in a garage and restored to its 1981 competition specification.

Walter Röhrl is a magician behind the wheel of... anything, really. From Group-B WRC monsters to exotic Nürburgring beasts, Röhrl is probably capable of beating your local Autocross club's fastest using a riding mower.

Recently, the automaker brought the stunning 904 GTS out of its museum and on to the racetrack. Our man Damon Lavrinc was lucky enough to get time in the shotgun seat, but the track was like an ice rink and the two literally went for a spin. Thankfully, Porsche set aside time for Röhrl to push the car around on a dry track. The result is pure driving excellence and the clip is waiting for you after the jump.

We're currently bombing around Mallorca, Spain on the launch of the Porsche Cayman R, and to make up for the massive monsoon that's coated the roads and nearly made a glorified go-kart track undrivable, our gracious hosts from Stuttgart brought out a legend. Actually, two of them.

None other than Walter Röhrl was flown in to show us "professionals" how a proper racing driver does it, and in between laps in the hotter, lightweight Cayman, the German racing legend took us for spin in something far more exotic.

According to Porsche, if there's a vintage, racing equivalent of the Cayman R, it's the historic Porsche 904, and this 911-powered 1965 example is one of only 20 ever made and came right from the personal garage of one of Ferdinand Porsche's progeny. This particularly immaculate 904 is probably worth over $1 million, but that didn't matter to Röhrl, who flung the featherweight (and seatbelt-less) coupe around the track with the kind of sideways fervor we'd expect from a World Rally Champion. Oh, and when we said "spin" we meant it. Follow the jump for the in-car footage, and excuse our incessant cackling - we're still trying to pry the grin off our face.

Fact: We would run many a gauntlet in order to get some on-track seat time behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Hell, we'd be overjoyed just to get a secondhand, passenger seat experience of what this monstrous 911 is capable of. And if we had our choice of drivers, Walter Röhrl, Porsche's senior test driver and decorated racer, would be our first pick.

Until that day comes, however, we'll just sit back and watch this video of Porsche's tame racing driver piloting the 630-horsepower GT2 RS around Luk Driving Center. Buckle up and watch this in-car video for yourself, after the jump.

Can we pause for a moment and give it up for Walter Röhrl? Here's a racer whose professional career began in 1973, first person to win the World Rally Championship twice, winner of the Pikes Peak race and the title Rally Driver of the Century in Italy and Rally Driver of the Millennium in France, and who simply never gave up the habit of winning or doing fast laps.

Autocar got the man back in the Audi Quattro with which he won the 1984 Rally Monte Carlo - Quattros took the first three positions, in fact - and sent him up the Col de Turini to see if he and the car still had it. Follow the jump to find out, and for a little more context, there's a video summary of that 1984 rally and a clip of Röhrl discussing and flying up Pikes Peak.

2010 Porsche GT3 RS - Click above for high-res image gallery

Porsche test pilot and all-around legend Walter Röhrl will be competing in next year's Nürburgring 24-Hour race for the first time in 17 years. His weapon of choice for the event: the 2010 Porsche GT3 RS. That's the rear-wheel drive one with the 450 horsepower 3.8-liter that runs up to 8,500 RPM. The one with the track-specific, lightweight lithium-ion battery and dynamic engine mounts. The one that did the Kessel Run 'Ring in 12 parsecs 7:33 in light traffic.

Röhrl says the street-legal production car is the closest thing to a race car he's ever driven, so he wants to find out what it can ultimately do from gun-to-flag. It probably won't hand comeuppance to the four-liter, $494,000 GT3 RSR, but with the same horsepower as the dedicated racer we figure Röhrl plans to keep it close.

Walter Röhrl drives better than you can. In fact, he drives better than most people presently walking this Earth. The rally legend and Porsche test driver recently took the 435 hp Porsche GT3 and lapped the 'Ring in a blistering 7:40. Now he's tossing the track-ready 911 variant on video for all to see. Hit the jump to watch Mr. Röhrl show the 2010 911 GT3 who's boss. It's too bad we can't switch off the underwhelming promo music so we can focus in on the beautiful noises emanating from the GT3's tailpipe, but Röhrl's handiwork more than makes up for it.
