It's no secret that the Autoblog corporate offices are teeming with station wagon fans. Give us the choice between a 1965 Buick SportWagon and a brand new Ferrari, and, well, we'll choose the Ferrari every time. But we still like the wagons.

So with excitement we watched the trailer (video available below) for "Wagonmasters," a documentary by a couple of Wake Forest University students covering the iconic American station wagon. The trailer begins with shots of a 1966 Pontiac GTO wagon, which, despite its absolute hotness, was never actually built by GM. The white-hot grocery-getter looks to be a GTO wagon recreation owned by Rocky Boyles in Raleigh, N.C.

It's an easily forgiven blooper that hopefully doesn't portend a disappointing documentary. A little less easily overlooked is an uncredited quote used in the trailer that says, "The wagon is a thing of the past and I doubt will ever be produced again." How about the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon? BMW 328i Sports Wagon? VW Jetta Sportwagen?

The documentary's official website says the film "offers glimpses into the lives of such wagon enthusiasts, and tells the story of the station wagon as it represents a changing America over the last one hundred years." Despite the possibility of flaws, we'll hold our final judgement until after the film is screened July 28 at this year's Concours d'Elegance of America in Plymouth, Mich.
Continue reading Station Wagons: The Documentary?

Station Wagons: The Documentary? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Jun 2012 11:29:00 EST.
We all have our favorite memories from childhood, and one of mine was piling into the back of the family station wagon, along with a passel of friends, to head to the Jersey Shore for my eighth birthday. Growing up as part of the "Leave it to Beaver" generation, the wagon was as essential a part of life as Tang, TV and my mother's inevitably over-cooked pot roast.

By the time we Boomers began to raise families of our own, the wagon had largely vanished, replaced first by the minivan and then the seemingly ubiquitous SUV. Oh, there were the odd few "two-box" models left on the market, usually a European offering, and maybe the occasional Asian import, but for all practical purposes, the wagon was dead.

Here, in the U.S., anyway. In other parts of the world, Europe in particular, it has actually gained strength over the years, leaving global planners - and a few of us diehard wagon fans - scratching our heads and wondering if this most utilitarian of automotive designs might ever make a comeback here.

There've been a few false starts, promising new entries like the Dodge Magnum failing to gain traction. But if this year's New York International Auto Show is any indication, a new era of the American station wagon may finally be upon us. Maybe.

With vast amounts of sheetmetal and a bed, trucks can be a lot easier to modify than cars. That holds true at the Woodward Dream Cruise, as mod masters jack up, lower and customize trucks of all shapes and sizes. Beyond the beefed up suspensions and 36-inch wheels, we also caught far bigger vehicles ranging from military applications and monster trucks to fire trucks and classic Chevys and Fords. Yet M-B head man Dieter Zetsche said the car isn't going away, so as one does with continuing product, the R-Class is getting some face and tail work done. Those who whisper about such things indicate that the car will end up looking more like the B-Class. We're not sure that will help it, since it looks much like the B-Class already and that car isn't exactly a looker, either. We think the R might be better served if Mercedes could explain why anyone should choose it over the E-Class wagon or GL-Class SUVs... and when the GLK arrives, well, good luck to you, R-Class.

[Source: Global Motors]
Spy Shots: R-Class facelift originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 10:29:00 EST. It looks like the potential ungainliness of the new E-Class could be gracefully smoothed out by the longer lines of the wagon. Of course, even if it is still ungainly, you'll get 85 extra horsepower over the current model, which should let you get away from gawkers with increased alacrity. That also means the baby on board might need a G-suit. The "Duplo" rear lights are probably mule-only fitments, but they'd be pretty cool if they were wrapped in polished housings.

[Source: Global Motors]
Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz E63AMG Wagon originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Oct 2008 08:58:00 EST.
Click above for high-res gallery of the new Toyota Avensis

The Euro-only Toyota Avensis is reminiscent of the Lexus IS350 in the same way that you'd tell someone, "You kind of look like someone I know, but not really." It's the rising linear sideline, somewhat high and compact profile, and squared-off rear that do it. But that's from a full-on side profile and around the back. Move around the front and it really just looks like a Toyota. The raked grille and molded lips in the front bumper are unexpected, as is the subtle sexiness of the wagon. Designed in France, the new Avensis grows a little over its predecessor by 5 cm in length and width. Under the hood, possibilities include three new Valvematic gasoline engines, and two diesels, while cogs can be swapped with a 6-speed manual or the dual-mode, Multidrive S automatic. Check out the exhaustive press release after the jump, and the high-res gallery of photos below.

Rounding out the Mitsubishi Lancer line this year is the new Lancer Sportback, also in extra spicy Ralliart flavor. It's everything you love about the Lancer plus the space, versatility and convenience of a wagon - the first time since the '80s you'll be able to have your cake and haul it, too. If it weren't for the spoiler, which is aptly called the "rear wing", and the subwoofer in the trunk, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was just another cool little wagon. But thanks to the Lancer Ralliart's turbocharged 2.0L MIVEC engine producing 237 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque and Twin-Clutch SST transmission, you'll soon be able to get those groceries with gusto. And it's the only wagon we know of with an access hatch to the central differential. All the details can be found in Mitsubishi's official press release after the jump, and live shots of the Lancer Sportback and Sportback Ralliart can be viewed in our high-res gallery below.

The image above is one of a set of the automaker's Exeo sedan given to the trademark office in Spain. According to the company, "the new name stems from the Latin word 'Exire', meaning "to go beyond", "to go further", and "The name Exeo is advanced, forceful and technological, which signals excellence and is highly suggestive of driving pleasure." Ok...

Instead of creating something completely new to chart these unknown waters, Seat has taken a previous gen Audi A4 and given it front and rear clips in the Seat style. Seat will also use the A4 Avant body to create an Exeo wagon. The newish sedan is meant to compete with the Ford Mondeo, Renault Laguna, and Alfa Romeo 159 and will be launched some time next year as a 2010 model. It is expected to retail for £15,000 to £23,000 in the U.K. and we don't yet know which powerplants it will receive.

Gallery: 2010 Seat Exeo renderings

[Source: Autocar]
New Seat Exeo is an old Audi A4 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Aug 2008 18:27:00 EST. It's edgy, smooth, finned (the roof rails) and sleek all in the right proportions. And for the States-siders, the 263 hp V6 will allow the wagon to hold its own off the line. While there's plenty of room in the back (note: it is a sport wagon) the car itself is quite compact. A 6'4" colleague couldn't fit in the front seat without bumping his head on the panoramic roof. And for folks at about the 6'0" mark, things get really cozy in the back seat. But you didn't buy a wagon because you wanted a full-sized sedan, did you? If you're in the wagon market, check it out when it comes to a dealer near you.

We've assembled two high-res galleries below and two videos after the jump of Cadillac design and product directors discussing the design of the CTS Sport Wagon.

Gallery: Monterey 2008: Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon - Live Reveal

Gallery: 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon

Continue reading Monterey 2008: 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon revealed LIVE

Monterey 2008: 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon revealed LIVE originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Aug 2008 17:26:00 EST.
Volvo has been trying its darnedest to reinvent itself, but the Swedish automaker is finding it can't escape its own image. Rather than trying to fight it, then, emerging reports suggest that the company will go with the flow while refocusing its model line-up to include more wagons, which already account for some two thirds of its languishing sales.

Among the new models Volvo is reportedly preparing is the V30, a sport-wagon aimed at the Audi A3. Expected to be a little taller and longer than the A3 Sportback, the V30 could incorporate the kind of flexible seating layouts we've seen in minivans, but in a smaller, more upscale package. Based on the European Focus platform, the V30 would slot in above the C30 sport-hatch to where the S40 and V50 fit currently. Those models, meanwhile, would grow slightly larger to take on the likes of the BMW 3-Series, but smaller than Volvo's own next-gen S60 and V70. An XC30 off-road version would likely also fall into the mix, with all-wheel-drive, higher road clearance and more rugged body-cladding.

Gothenburg (home to Volvo's headquarters, not Batman's Swedish cousin) is also tipped to be considering replacing the flagship S80 sedan with a new range-topping V100 wagon, as well as a Smart-style city-car and electric powertrain packages. One way or another, Volvo needs to find its niche and run with it, or it could find itself up for sale like its erstwhile Ford Europe/PAG sister companies Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover.

While the renderings give it five doors, the car definitely retains its coupe DNA -- there'll be no chance of confusing it with an A4 Avant. The bog standard Sportback will make do with front wheel drive and common rail diesels producing 140 to 200 hp. Step above that and you'll get gas options that utilize Audi's TFSI engines, as well as quattro and torque vectoring. The star at the top of the Christmas tree goes by the name of RS5, and gets the 4.2-liter FSI V8. If the final version looks as good as the renderings, then we think we need two.

With the furor and the spy shots and the commercials, there isn't much left to ponder about MINI's upcoming long-wheelbase Clubman. However, these shots do reveal the other side of the car that isn't seen in these spy shots, in what could be the exclusive Hot Chocolate color. The latest rumor is that the Clubman's roof might have twin sunroofs.

The curtain gets pulled back next month, officially, and the Clubman will be ready for its close-up in September, at the Frankfurt Auto Show. We reported earlier that US sales will begin in November of '08, but Motor Authority simply says November. While the Clubman expands the Mini range to four models, other models are also in the works as well as a possible factory expansion or outsourcing production.
