This is the new Chevy Cruze station wagon, which will debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show and then arrive in European showrooms this summer. At 184 inches, it's longer than both the Cruze sedan and hatchback (by three and seven inches, respectively).

Inside, there's 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up, and up to 52.9 cubic feet with the seats folded. Drivers will get to choose from a range of gasoline (1.6, 1.8, and 1.4T) and diesel (1.7 and 2.0) powertrains, and the long-roof Cruze arrives with Chevy MyLink available.

Australians will get a Holden-badged version, but as for us? Sorry, guys. Don't expect anything in the near future. Chevrolet spokesman Michael Albano says, "No plans on bringing the wagon to US at this point. But we'll continue to evaluate market as needed."

All summer, I make it a point to hit the local cruise nights, and while there are plenty of regulars on hand week to week, a few cars make just one appearance and vanish. Way back in May, the car you see above, a surf-themed 1964 Ford Falcon Squire dubbed "Tiki Taxi", showed up. Immediately smitten, I snapped a bunch of photos, all of which are now gallerized here. Good thing, because the car never materialized again.

Fast-forward to today. Turns out, the "Tiki Taxi" is for sale. The coolest '64 Falcon station wagon in the known universe has a 289, three on the floor, and a JVC cassette deck to play your Martin Denny tapes during the ride to Trader Vic's. Current high bid (as of post time) is $6,600, and you still have two days to get in on the action. Check out the photo gallery to see just how beautifully turned out this wagon really is. You can also download full-resolution shots here.
eBay Find of the Day: '64 Ford Falcon "Tiki Taxi" originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Jan 2012 11:33:00 EST.
It likely comes as no shock to hear we're all sorts of excited about the prospect of a Jaguar XF Sportbrake. Even though we know the model may never show up on our shores, we're happier in a world in which a machine like this exists. Ivan Martinovic has been so kind as to render what the longroof XF may look like once Jaguar strips off all the swirls. Is it faithful to the final product? Your guess is as good as ours, but we're hoping the production version has a bit more elegance to its rear when it drops.

As we've already heard, the XF Sportbrake is an attempt for Jaguar to snap up buyers who would otherwise spend their hard-earned cash at their local BMW or Audi dealership. Jaguar has made it clear that its new wagon won't be coming to the U.S. due to a tangle of federal regulations. That means we won't get to cram the family in this luxury hauler any time soon. More importantly, it means the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon and the inevitable - we hope - Jaguar XFR Sportbrake will simply have to glare at one another from the across the pond. Head over to PS Garage for a closer look.
Rendered Speculation: Jaguar XF Sportbrake originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Dec 2011 14:33:00 EST.
Yes. A thousand times, yes.

It's no secret that we - and every other automotive enthusiast on the plant - love insanely fast wagons. So it comes as no surprise that we're seriously excited to see this, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Estate, come to life.

All of the bulgy bits you see here - the front bumper, massive air intakes, wide fender flares and vented (yet camouflaged) hood - are all found on the similarly equipped C63 AMG Black Series Coupe. The only major difference here is that this wagon still sports oval exhaust pipes, rather than the squared-off ones found on the coupe, but that's an easy fix that may come into play later in the hot wagon's development.

We expect what's under the hood to be exactly the same as the two-door Black Series: Merc's naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8, massaged to the tune of 510 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. All that power will go straight to the rear wheels via the seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT dual-clutch transmission.

Mercedes-Benz doesn't sell the standard C63 AMG Estate here in North America, so we don't expect the Black Series to touch ground here on our shores. Sad stuff, but just knowing that this beast exists somewhere in the world makes our hearts skip a few beats. See the hotness for yourself in the attached high-res image gallery.
Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Estate preparing to storm the supermarket originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Nov 2011 14:59:00 EST.
Well, we can all stop hoping for a new Dodge Magnum.

Chrysler-Lancia CEO Saad Chebab told Autocar that there will be no Touring version of the redesigned Chrysler 300 built for Europe, saying that wagon sales in the U.S. are not robust enough to justify development costs for a five-door version of the platform. If Europe isn't getting a Chrysler wagon, we certainly aren't going to see a Dodge version here.

The previous-generation Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 both spawned wagon variants, the Dodge Magnum for the U.S. market and the Chrysler 300 Touring overseas. The Magnum was never a hot seller, though it had its fans - ourselves included - and Autocar says the 300 wagon was popular both in the U.K. and on mainland Europe.

But with Fiat calling the shots now and post-bankruptcy budgets at Chrysler still tight, we're guessing any money that could have been spent putting a new Magnum on the road went elsewhere.
Remember that Buick Regal Wagon we told you about? The one that General Motors was highly considering in an effort to expand the Regal line here in the United States? You know, the one we spied lurking around the GM proving grounds?

It's not going to happen.

Inside Line got the word right from a Buick spokesperson's mouth: "Absolutely not... There is no Regal Wagon in our future plans."

Still, even if the report is correct, that doesn't mean there won't be some expansion to the Regal portfolio. In addition to the recently launched eAssist and GS models, there's been a lot of talk about a two-door coupe version, and until we get a definite 'no' statement from the product folks within GM, we have no reason to doubt that it's in the cards. There's also the five-door liftback model that's already on sale overseas under different badges. Shame about that wagon, though.
Buick Regal Wagon isn't going to happen originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 17:28:00 EST.
The 5 Series Gran Turismo hasn't met its lofty sales expectations in the United States, so BMW is considering bringing the 5 Series Touring back to our shores.

Although nothing is set in stone, Autoblog has learned that the possibility of the wagon making a reappearance on U.S. soil is back on the table. While sales of the 5 Series GT haven't been particularly robust, the model has managed to outsell the previous 5 Series Touring since its arrival last year - this, despite its lukewarm reception and controversial appearance.

We've also been informed that the twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 currently fitted to the 760Li won't shuffle off this mortal coil anytime soon. Instead, BMW is considering fitting the massive mill with its ActiveHybrid system to boost fuel economy and performance. We could see this electrically augmented 12-cylinder unit within the next three years in both the 7 Series flagship and future Rolls-Royce vehicles.
BMW considering bringing 5 Series Touring back to U.S., V12 to soldier on with hybrid originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 10:01:00 EST.
Since this is a post about the development of a European wagon, we can get two things out of the way right now: we probably won't get it here in the United States, and there's no use crying about it and all the other awesome wagons we don't get. (It wasn't the manufacturers that forced U.S. buyers into crossovers, after all.) To the point, though, the next wagon we for which we'll lust from afar is the Jaguar XF estate, admitted by the XF's vehicle engineering manager to be in the works.

The only other detail given away is that "It will be slightly different, with character and panache," although we're not sure if he means something noticeably different from the XF line (other than a giant rump) or different from luxe wagons in general. Otherwise, we have no info on when it will arrive or how much it might cost, even though as far back as 2009 Jaguar said it would have an XF wagon in the pipeline. In December of last year, the company's global brand director said - in the context of Jaguar crossover rumors - we would see it "shortly."

With Mercedes the last premium European automaker to offer a wagon in the U.S., Jaguar might see how an XF hauler does against the E-Class/A6 Avant/5 Series Estate mob before committing it to our shores.
Jaguar confirms XF wagon originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 10:59:00 EST.
One year ago, a Buick Regal wagon was deemed "unlikely." However, General Motors is reportedly looking to expand the Regal lineup, not just with a rumored coupe, but with the estate seen here. Sources within GM say that the Regal wagon could debut as early as the end of this year, making it a 2012 model year vehicle.

In addition to these live photos (note the "turbo" script on its rump), our spies are offering up a rendering of what the production version of the Regal Wagon could look like, complete with the larger 19-inch wheels from the Regal Turbo sedan. If produced, the Regal wagon would aim squarely at the recently introduced Acura TSX Sport Wagon.

If the Regal wagon is indeed set to debut this year, the Los Angeles Auto Show is probably a safe bet. We'll keep our ears to the ground for more details in the coming months.
Buick Regal Wagon spotted naked and unashamed originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 13:27:00 EST. We return to an old whine: Why exactly does the United States as a whole clearly possess the psyche that can categorically reject perhaps the two most useful body configurations ever thought of for road-going automobiles? Namely, the hatchback in all its various configurations and the most wonderful all-rounder on Earth, the station wagon.

Regarding the latter, witness this latest chapter in sensational wagoning, estating, call it what you will: the new 2011-12 Audi A6 Avant, which just had the covers pulled off it at a Berlin ceremony. We know that opinionists sprout from the ether of the Internet and have the habit of saying things in ways that reflect the writer's intensely personal and frequently skew-ish "obvious reason why" North America many years ago thumbed its collective nose at the wagon. But go ahead and comment; it's a lively and fun ritual. And for more of our own commentary, continue reading...
Continue reading 2012 Audi A6 Avant: Another wagon Americans just don't get anymore

2012 Audi A6 Avant: Another wagon Americans just don't get anymore originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 May 2011 19:25:00 EST.
Ferrari is taking a bold leap with the unveiling of its brand-new 2012 FF all-wheel drive shooting-brake. The Italian automaker also understands basic accounting principles, noting that demand is currently high for any images or video of the four-passenger super wagon, yet yet supply is low. Helping satiate our requirement for a fix of the FF, Ferrari has released five additional photos of the car playing in the snow.

We would prefer to hear the wail of the 651-horsepower, 6.3-liter V12 engine, but we'll take what we can get. Check out in the 2012 Ferrari FF exploring a winter wonderland in the gallery below.

Like us, reader Tristan Hipps is a fan of the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon. After perusing the recently-released images of the CTS-V Coupe race car, Hipps decided that he wanted to see what a wagon version might look like. I think we can all agree that it looks damn sexy...

Hipps stated that he "just tweaked the photos" of the CTS-V coupe to produce his vision of the Sport Wagon racer. If we tried that, we 'd probably end up with something resembling a Pontiac Aztek.

Click through the gallery below for two angles on Hipps' design, each set done with and without a rear spoiler.

If you've ever thought about picking up a yellow Hummer and painting the word "Tonka" across the side or building a working replica of your favorite Hot Wheels fantasy car, have we got a story for you. An elderly couple in Alaska has built a jumbo Radio Flyer wagon out of an old truck, and what's more, they drive it around Anchorage on a regular basis.

The underpinnings were borrowed from a 1976 Mazda pickup which Judy Foster (not to be confused with the Silence of the Lambs star, Jodie) inherited from her father. After they took possession, her husband Fred Keller started an eleven-month project to turn it into an overgrown childhood dream. The result is reportedly fully street legal and gets nothing but smiles wherever it goes. Fred and Judy will just have to watch that eight-foot tall handle clearing any low ceilings in parking garages. Follow the jump to watch the KTUU video segment for yourself.

2011 Mazda6 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Milestones and goals are great things to strive for in life. Mazda just reached a pretty impressive one with their mid-size Mazda6. The two millionth example has just rolled off the assembly line. It took the Japanese automaker eight years and six months to get here.

Production began on the first generation Mazda6 back in 2002 and it served to give the Zoom-Zoom campaign a major push. That first-gen car was redesigned in 2007 (the changes arrived in the US in 2009) and a third generation will be arriving soon.

Take a look at the gallery and you can see that the why-so-serious mug has been toned down. The style is more mature without losing the subtle aggressiveness found in the rest of the lineup. The future looks bright for the Mazda6. Now if we can just get them to bring over the wagon and the Mazdaspeed6 we could push them to three million units even faster.

Volvo has just sauntered into the battle to convince the world that wagons are as cool as they are functional with a new launch video for the company's very sexy V60 long-roof. The car's hobbies appear to be rocking out across the open desert and hustling family and cargo across town in a hurry. Globally, the company is offering a number of engines in the V60, including a new 2.0-liter direct-injected four with around 203 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Sadly, we wouldn't exactly hold your breath waiting for that one to show up on this side of the world.

But all may not yet be lost - Volvo has been kind enough to supply the car with a turbo 3.0-liter T6 with 304 Swedish ponies and 324 lb-ft of torque - a powertrain that sounds more like what the automaker might consider for North America (if indeed it gets the nod at all). In either case, the blown six-pot would would no doubt have us double-checking to make sure our groceries are secured. With that kind of grunt, Volvo says the wagon will scoot up to 60 mph in a scant 6.6 seconds. All-wheel drive is standard, and the only gearbox available on the T6 is the company's six-speed automatic. Volvo will offer no less than eight different engines in the V60, so it's hard telling exactly which will show up here in the States should the time come.

Until then, the company has given us one sweet launch video and a bevy of images to drool over. Be sure to hit the jump for the press release and to check out the short flick after you roll through the high-res gallery.

2011 Buick Regal - Click above for high-res image gallery

A fresh batch of rumors kicking around the web are claiming that General Motors is seriously mulling bringing hatchback and wagon versions of the all-new Buick Regal to the States. In the brand's ongoing quest to shed its status as a synonym for all things elderly, the Tri-Crest has raided the Opel parts bin, slipped a waterfall grille on the nose of the Insignia and called it a day. We were simply glad to hear that the car would be available with a turbo mill and a third pedal, but according to Car and Driver, things are about to get even more interesting.

It turns out the Insignia is available as a hatchback and a wagon in more civilized portions of the world. Jim Federico, the man who led the Regal to the fountain of youth, told C/D that the U.S. will be getting at least one of the other body styles within a few short years, and that there's a good chance that both of them will show up on dealer lots at some point in the near future. Chances are that's not exactly ground-breaking news by anyone's standards, but it gets better. Federico has said that since American wagon buyers are suddenly smitten with the likes of the Jetta TDI Sportwagen, the Regal long-roof will boast an oil-burning powerplant.

Needless to say, our eyes are dish-plate sized at the news. Could Buick possibly offer an all-wheel drive diesel wagon with a six-speed manual transmission? We want to believe, but our skeptical side is in full go-mode on this one.

2011 Kia Optima - Click above for high-res image gallery

Autocar is reporting that Kia may be mulling wagon and coupe variants of its just-announced 2011 Optima. The wrinkle is, however, that both the proposed long-roof and coupe versions of the car would designed with both Europe and Korea in mind. So far, there's no word on whether or either bodystyle would make its way to the States, though Autocar quotes Kia Chief Designer Peter Schreyer as saying that a two-door variant would do well in our neck of the woods.

Kia pulled the sheets off of the next-generation Optima at this year's New York Auto Show. Both longer and wider than the previous model, the 2011 Optima (known as the Magentis in other markets) appears to have good bones for growing into a wagon. Given the number of good-looking mid-size wagons we've seen crop up lately (we're looking at you, Cadillac CTS/Acura TSX), there's certainly room in the market for a more affordable load lugger.

We wouldn't exactly hold our breath, though. It'd likely take at least a couple of years to get the design through concept stage and into production, and even then, odds are it wouldn't be headed our direction. Doesn't hurt to hope, however.

We all have our favorite memories from childhood, and one of mine was piling into the back of the family station wagon, along with a passel of friends, to head to the Jersey Shore for my eighth birthday. Growing up as part of the "Leave it to Beaver" generation, the wagon was as essential a part of life as Tang, TV and my mother's inevitably over-cooked pot roast.

By the time we Boomers began to raise families of our own, the wagon had largely vanished, replaced first by the minivan and then the seemingly ubiquitous SUV. Oh, there were the odd few "two-box" models left on the market, usually a European offering, and maybe the occasional Asian import, but for all practical purposes, the wagon was dead.

Here, in the U.S., anyway. In other parts of the world, Europe in particular, it has actually gained strength over the years, leaving global planners - and a few of us diehard wagon fans - scratching our heads and wondering if this most utilitarian of automotive designs might ever make a comeback here.

There've been a few false starts, promising new entries like the Dodge Magnum failing to gain traction. But if this year's New York International Auto Show is any indication, a new era of the American station wagon may finally be upon us. Maybe.

2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon - Click above for high-res image gallery

There's quite a phenomenon at this year's New York Auto Show. Two - yes, two wagons have debuted. The first was the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon (our current pick for Best In Show, we might add), and the second is from Acura. The U.S.-market Acura TSX is the Honda Accord overseas, and the wagon variant that other markets will finally come to our shores to fill out the TSX lineup.

From all appearances, the only differences between the Euro Accord wagon and the TSX Sport Wagon are the addition of Acura badges and a slightly more upscale interior. Powering the Sport Wagon is the same 2.4-liter inline-four found in the sedan, mated exclusively to a five-speed automatic transmission. Official fuel economy numbers haven't been finalized just yet, but Acura claims that the wagon will achieve around 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

Sadly, the TSX wagon is only available with front-wheel drive, as Acura says that it has no plans to offer its Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system in the TSX range. A pity, since we're big fans of this grips-at-all-paws setup. This could prove to be a sticking point for some consumers, however, especially since Acura's claimed competitive set (BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, namely) both offer all-wheel drive.

Still, we're always pleased to see another wagon on the road, and we're hoping that consumers will feel the same when the TSX Sport Wagon hits dealerships in late Fall. For now, hit the jump to read the full details in Acura's press release and click through our attached galleries to see the new wagon from all angles.
The car shares plenty of DNA with the drop-dead sexy S60 sedan the company unveiled at this year's Geneva Motor Show, including the artfully-styled front fascia. Throw in an extra acre of roof metal, a set of familial brake lights and plenty of cargo room, and you've got a winner all the way around.

So far there's no word on what we can expect to find in the engine bay, but the same 300 horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder found in the S60 sedan wouldn't be a bad guess. Odds are the company will offer both front and all-wheel drive versions of the long-roof whenever it hits the market, too. Expect the V60 to come loaded with plenty of the same safety tech, including the Swedish automaker's new Collision Warning system.
