The Volvo XC90 R-Design at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show is covered in some gorgeous satin blue paint to cover its more aggressive front and rear design. Volvo will demonstrate a new safety innovation at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas next month that enables vehicle-to-cyclist communication to warn both a driver and a bicycle rider about an impending collision. It was developed in partnership with POC, a maker of safety gear for gravity sports athletes, and Ericsson, and works through a smartphone app and the Volvo cloud.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is releasing its annual list tallying of the scores for the latest model year vehicles to see how they compare to last year. Judging by the agency's evaluations, the numbers look quite positive. Seventy-one vehicles earned either the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ rating so far in its evaluations, compared to 39 at this point last year. Among the latest winners, there have been 33 TSP+ awards and 38 TSP medalists.

One of the safety features on Volvo's new XC90 is called Run Off Road Protection, which detects when the car leaves the tarmac at high speed and prepares the cabin and occupants for an impact. After detection, the system retracts the seat belts while a spine protection element between the seat and the seat frame helps cushion the blow for passengers, the airbags are activated in case of a forceful frontal impact and release pin is sprung that retracts the brake pedal.
Long before Volvo got into the crossover-utility game with the XC90 and XC60, it was making ruggedized all-wheel-drive wagons. In fact it's been doing so longer than Audi has, and almost as long as Subaru. And now it's returned to that tradition with the debut of its new V60 Cross Country on the floor of the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.
