Volvo vice president of powertrain engineering, Derek Crabb, recently said that the Swedish automaker is developing smaller and smarter powertrain options that will "turn V8s into dinosaurs" - a statement that could have been our first indication that Volvo is no longer looking to create a luxury flagship sedan to take on German land yachts like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. Now Automotive News seems to be backing this up after speaking with CEO Hakan Samuelsson, who said that a big sedan wouldn't fit the brand's green image and, more importantly, might not even be a car that its customers would even consider.

Rather than trying to compete in a small, established market against rear-drive, 12-cylinder sedans, Volvo is looking at the emerging, higher-volume premium small car segment to take on its German rivals with the all-new Volvo V40 (shown above). Not wanting to abandon the big-vehicle segment altogether, a next-generation XC90 is due out within the next couple years (and was spotted in some recent spy shots), and it will ride on the new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), which will be shared with the new S80 according to the AN article.
Volvo won't go after S-Class, 7 Series market originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Apr 2013 17:46:00 EST.
If you read our recent First Drive of the 2013 Volvo V40, you no doubt remember our verdict: "If the V40 does not make it over to the U.S., then Volvo should issue guns to its entire executive staff so they can summarily shoot themselves in the foot."

Well, here's even more reason for the Swedes to bring us their smart looking C-segment hatchback: The Polestar version of the V40 it reportedly has planned for Europe. According to PistonHeads, Volvo will be announcing the hotted-up variant at the Paris Motor Show in September.

Polestar will take the forthcoming 254-horsepower V40 T5, a car that shares hardware with the 2013 Ford Focus ST, and give it all the kit we've been hoping for in a Focus RS, according to the report. Citing Volvo's UK director, PistonHeads says the V40 Polestar will have at least 280 hp and all-wheel drive, cost about £30,000 ($46,900), and come to market sometime next year.
Volvo planning V40 Polestar with all-wheel drive, 280 hp originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Jul 2012 14:16:00 EST.
When a new hatchback or sport wagon hits the European market, it's only a matter of time before the tuners get their hands on it. And in the case of the new Volvo V40, that comes at the hand of Heico Sportiv.

The German tuner has been teasing us with plans to mod the V40 for months now. So with sketches and the promise of a racing version already on the wire, Heico has followed up with the first images of its V40 tuning program.

Mechanical changes center around an ECU reflash for the turbo five that boosts output from the car's standard 237 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque up to 266 hp and 269 lb-ft. Seven-spoke alloys, a full aero kit, and quad ovoid exhaust tips round out the package and set Heico's V40 apart from its stock brethren.
Heico Sportiv unveils tuned Volvo V40 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 10 Jun 2012 12:03:00 EST.
The V40 is a vital product not only for Volvo itself, but also for the tuners that specialize in customizing the Swedish automobiles. And among the foremost of them is Heico Sportiv.

The German tuning firm hinted a few weeks ago at its impending line of accessories for the new sportwagon, and has now followed up by announcing the racecar you see here. The modified V40 serves two purposes: The first will be to race at the Nürburgring 24-hour race - presumably next year's since this year's just finished. Secondly, it previews a range of modifications that the company will be offering buyers of the new V40.

The mod job includes a full aero kit, complete with flared wheel arches, front splitter, rear diffuser and a big rear wing. The exhaust, suspension and rolling stock have also been upgraded, capped by a version of Volvo's five-cylinder turbo-diesel tuned to produce 300 horsepower on bio-diesel fuel. That much is hinted at by the "Green Racing" livery that mimics that run by the Volvo team in various touring car series.

The car will make its public debut at the upcoming auto show in Leipzig, Germany, but you can scope it out now in the press release below.
Continue reading Heico Sportiv debuts Volvo V40 mods with bio-diesel racer

Heico Sportiv debuts Volvo V40 mods with bio-diesel racer originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 May 2012 09:01:00 EST.
A keen-eyed reader managed to snag a few photos of what looks to be the upcoming Volvo XC40 ahead of the vehicle's debut at the Paris Motor Show. Like most manufacturers, Volvo is keen to offer buyers the small crossovers they demand. With a taller ride height, more ground clearance and a more aggressive front fascia than the V40, the XC40 should do just that.

Drivetrain details are still a bit murky at the moment, but we wouldn't be surprised to see everything from a new diesel to turbocharged gasoline five-cylinder under the hood. The latter of those two should be good for around 254 horsepower.

If the V40 is any indication, the crossover will also boast start-stop technology and brake-energy regeneration in either manual or automatic transmission configurations. Expect to see both front and all-wheel drive variants as well.

The machine above was spotted in Flagstaff, Arizona while out for a little hot-weather testing, though we're told the XC40 isn't destined for the U.S. market. That seems a bit odd to us. The small crossover seems to be a perfect fit for Americans who can't get enough stylish crossovers.
Volvo XC40 spotted testing in Arizona originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 May 2012 13:28:00 EST.
The emergence of the V40 is arguably the biggest news to come out of Volvo since Ford sold it to Geely. Just as with any new car - European hatchbacks especially - the aftermarket will follow shortly with modifications, and in the case of Volvo, that means Heico Sportiv.

The German tuning house specializes in Gothenburg's finest. The firm already has a new ECU module for the T5 engine in the V40 that brings output up from 237 horsepower to 266 and from 236 pound-feet of torque to 269. Heico has released a pair of renderings previewing what it plans to do with the outside of the slick new sport-wagon.

From the teaser renderings, we can see a new set of lightweight seven-spoke alloys, new bumpers front and rear, side skirt extensions, a relatively low-key diffuser and quad ovoid exhaust tips. In other words, the V40, only slightly more so. Unfortunately, since the V40 isn't earmarked for American showrooms, this may be as close as we'll get.
Heico Sportiv gears up to mod new Volvo V40 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 May 2012 09:44:00 EST.
With the S40 gone and the C30 on its way out the door, Volvo has a few holes in its line that Audi and BMW are happy to fill with the all-new A3 and 1 Series, respectively.

Enter the V40, a five-door hatch that's one of the most attractive designs from Sweden since the Ikea Skürg. It's a svelte bit of kit, with an organic fascia bleeding into a subtly sculpted hood and capped off with a sloping roofline that can be had in full panoramic glass.

Like the exterior, the interior is a mild evolution of Volvo's current design ethos, with a minimalist, floating center stack situated beneath a large touchscreen display.

Power is provided by Volvo's ubiquitous 254-horsepower turbocharged five-cylinder mated to either a six-speed automatic or manual gearbox, good for a 6.7-second run to 60 mph. Start-stop tech and regenerative braking are standard, along with Volvo's usual suite of safety features.

But alas, the V40 is not for U.S. consumption. Which is a shame, because the States could benefit from an alternative that slots in with the entry-level Germans.
There are some cars we enjoy writing about more than others. Those tend to be the ones with the big horsepower numbers and seldom more than two doors, but the new Volvo V40 that was officially released today stands as an exception, because while it is hardly what you'd call exotic, it did pique our interest more than a workaday hatchback should. But we'll have to try not to like it too much, because we just received confirmation that it is not, we're sorry to report, coming to the United States.

In an email we received today from Geno Effler, head of public relations for Volvo Cars of North America, we were told that - and we quote - "The V40 is not coming to the United States." Rats.

Effler further states in the correspondence that "The V40 is not replacing an existing model; it is a new model." Which may be true enough, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the existing C30 hatchback, S40 sedan and V50 wagon all go the way of the dodo in due course.

But then we wouldn't be all that surprised, either, to see a three-door version spun off of the V40 to officially take the place of the aging C30, a sedan version to replace the even older S40 and maybe even a longer wagon to take the place of the V50. For now, however, this is one more stylish European hatchback we'll just have to admire from afar.

So do you think Volvo ought to change its mind and bring the V40 to these shores? Cast your vote in our informal online poll below. You never know who in Gothenburg might be listening.

Few vehicles have received the kind of gradual, bit by bit roll-out that - intentionally or otherwise - the new Volvo V40 has. The Swedish premium hatchback has been the subject of teasers, spy shots and leaks aplenty - including two video clips and a batch of sixteen images that surfaced just yesterday - but they've all lead up to this, its full reveal. (Well, this and its official unveiling next week.)

Scandinavia's answer to the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series - and a potential replacement not only for the C30 but also the S40 and V50 - the new V40 is shaping up as quite a looker, but now we've got the details to go with it. For starters, the V40 will be available with the cleanest diesel Volvo's ever offered, anchored at the other end of the spectrum by a 254-horsepower turbo five good for a 6.7-second sprint to 62 mph. Not too shabby, and the entire range - whether mated to manual gearbox or automatic - is equipped with start-stop engine management and regenerative braking, ensuring that, whichever powertrain is selected, it's running at optimal efficiency.

Being a Volvo, the V40 also incorporates the latest in safety features, including not only low-speed collision avoidance and pedestrian detection with full auto brake but the world's first pedestrian airbag. Although Volvo hasn't revealed whether its new entry-level model will make the transatlantic voyage to these shores, it is projecting that 85 percent of the 90,000 units it aims to sell annually will be delivered in Europe from its assembly plant in Ghent, Belgium - which doesn't bode well for American availability.

Two images of the 2013 Volvo V40 broke onto Facebook recently and it seems their friends didn't want to be left behind. Fourteen more press shots of Volvo's new five-door hatchback just burgled their way onto the Web, and from the front three-quarter it looks like a worthy competitor to the the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series.

Of course we don't have any more information, so we don't know which other Volvo family member or members it'll replace. However, we do get to see its interior, which is an evolution of that in the S60 and C30. More harmonized in design detail and more striking in materials, the dash cluster is reorganized and housed in metallic surrounds, while the center console moves even further toward Scandinavian minimalism.

We've also got a promo video and a Volvo commercial for the V40, which you'll find after the jump. It will be revealed officially at the Geneva Motor Show, which is hopefully when we'll find out if and when it's coming to the U.S.
Continue reading More Volvo V40 images hit the Internet [w/video]

More Volvo V40 images hit the Internet [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 Feb 2012 12:33:00 EST.
Some automakers try their damnedest to keep their new products under wraps until they're good and ready to show it to the world. (And of those, some succeed more than others.) Others, meanwhile, steadily leak out photos and details - through official channels or back ones - to keep us hooked. We're not quite sure which approach Volvo meant to take with its all-new V40, but we do know we've seen more of this car that's yet to be released than we've seen of others that have. This, however, is our best look at the new Swedish hatch yet.

Ostensibly, this new V40 could replace the C30 hatchback, S40 sedan and V50 wagon in one fell swoop, but we probably won't know more until the Geneva Motor Show. These leaked images come courtesy of the Facebook page of Motoryzacyjny - a Polish car mag whose name this blogger, for all his Eastern European shtetl roots, can't pronounce any better than the rest of you - and it shows us what appears to be a rather shapely sports hatch that aims to give the likes of the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series a run for their money.

Of course, since the range has not yet been officially launched, we've yet to receive word on whether the V40 will make the transatlantic voyage forged by its Viking ancestors to the New World in which we live, but one can hope. One can certainly hope.
Striking Viking: Volvo V40 slips out on Facebook ahead of Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 10:56:00 EST. Volvo already confirmed that its all-new V40 is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show, but French site L'Automobile apparently beat them to the punch with this singular, grainy shot of Volvo's new entry-level five-door.

If this is it, we likey, particularly the deep belt line that runs up and over the rear fenders and the two-tiered glass hatch. Things get a bit too busy in the back, but we'll reserve judgement until we see it in the sheetmetal in a few weeks.

Mum's the word on other V40 details, though reports have suggested a range of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel powertrains, the most powerful of which will likely be a 240-horsepower turbo unit sending power to the front wheels. Stay tuned for the full details in early March.
2013 Volvo V40 rear end inadvertently exposed originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Feb 2012 15:30:00 EST.
There are drawbacks to being the property of a larger conglomerate, to be sure, but there are also benefits. Taking advantage of group buying power, shared developments costs and synergies with products from other divisions, for instance. And these are things that, since splitting off from Ford a couple of years ago, Volvo does not have at its disposal any longer.

That's why the Swedish automaker is looking for a partner with which to share development costs - specifically those attached to developing a new small car range. Volvo is presently preparing to unveil the V40 (teased in the picture above), a new five-door hatchback/sportwagon positioned against the increasingly lucrative market currently dominated by the likes of the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series.

Whatever it is that Volvo needs to get its new projects off the ground and out on the road, apparently parent company Geely, the Chinese automaker that bought Volvo from Ford in 2010, doesn't have it.
Volvo looking for small car partner originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 18:00:00 EST.
Our spy photographers have manged to lay lenses on the new Volvo V40 as engineers put the vehicle through a little cold-weather testing. Until just recently, we'd heard that the five-door version of the C30 would be called the V30, but Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby has confirmed that the model will actually come wearing V40 badges.

Whatever they call it, Volvo is hoping the new machine will be capable of giving the Audi A3 Sportback and BMW X1 a run for their respective Euros. Details are understandably scarce at the moment, though we feel safe assuming the V40 will debut with a range of gasoline and diesel engine options.

The most potent of that bunch will likely be a 240-horspeower turbocharged four-cylinder that puts power to the front wheels... which certainly sounds like a good time to us. So far, Volvo hasn't said word one about an all-wheel-drive variant, though there's some indication that a plug-in hybrid may show its face in the near future.
Volvo V40 caught testing in winter wonderland originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 19:30:00 EST.
We like Volvo, from the old boxy but good designs straight on through to the latest S60 mid-sizer. But there's no denying the fact that the swoopier designs - let's call it New Volvo - it's been producing the last several years are more appealing to the masses than its historic bricks. The C30, to our eyes at least, is still an interesting machine. It has, however, been on the market for the better part of six years now years now, prompting the Swedish automaker to prepare its replacement.

Rather than stick with the three-door body-style, however, Volvo is apparently preparing to kill two (make that three) birds with one proverbial stone: standing in for the C30, S40 and V50 will be an all-new V40.

The five-door hatch/sportwagon is tipped to debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, but discounting some spy shots of a heavily disguised prototype, this is the first official glimpse Gothenburg has given us. The likes of the Audi A3 and Lexus CT 200h will undoubtedly be watching to see if they've got anything to worry about, but from what we've seen so far, it looks like this will be one of those New Volvo products worth waiting for.
Volvo to unveil new V40 in Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Dec 2011 16:15:00 EST.
