Polestar is getting ready to deliver its first production car, the Volvo S60 Polestar. Letting the S60 stretch its legs, Polestar Racing driver Robert Dahlgren took the blue sedan from Barcelona, Spain to Jokkmokk, Sweden - stopping for wet-weather testing in Germany along the way.

Dahlgren narrates the journey of the "pilot project" that has 350 horsepower and around 368 pound-feet of torque, and will perhaps be the first in an era of hardcore Volvo production cars. It will go on sale in Australia this Summer, with other markets "under investigation." While we non-Aussies wait with fingers crossed, there's a video below to enjoy.
Continue reading Watch Polestar talk about the development of its super S60

Watch Polestar talk about the development of its super S60 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 03 May 2013 19:15:00 EST.
Volvo has been experimenting with flywheel propulsion systems since the eighties, but only recently has technology caught up with the possibility of real-world applications. In 2011, the Swedish carmaker was granted 6.57 million Swedish kronor (about $1M US) by the Swedish Energy Agency to work on a kinetic energy recovery system with Swedish bearing company SKF. Before it began trials, Volvo expected the fuel savings to be as high as 20 percent. After trials conducted last year on public roads the results were even better, Volvo finding that a KERS-equipped four-cylinder turbo performs like a six-cylinder turbo but gets up to 25-percent better fuel economy. It calls KERS "a light, cheap and very eco-efficient solution."

The test vehicle was an S60, its ICE driving the front wheels while the KERS - weighing six kilograms, measuring about 20 centimeters across and using a carbon fiber flywheel - was attached to the rear axle. Under braking, the four-cylinder engine is shut off and the KERS gathers rotational energy, spinning at up to 60,000 revolutions per minute. The stored energy is then used to get the car going again or to assist at cruising speeds. It's the same kind of vacuum-sealed flywheel design used by Audi in its R18 etron quattro, but with the opposite arrangement - in the Audi the diesel V6 drives the rear wheels, the KERS drives the front wheels.

Like the units in Formula One, it provides an additional 80 horsepower. When working with the four-cylinder ICE, the S60 with KERS can do the 0-62 mph dash in 5.5 seconds, a full 1.1 seconds faster than the S60 with the 3.0-liter T6 engine and all-wheel drive.

As we expect with hybrids, the greatest fuel savings came in urban environments with a lot of braking, Volvo suggesting that the combustion engine could be shut down "about half the time" on the New European Driving Cycle. A press release below has more details, along with a video Volvo released in 2011 to show how its system works.
Continue reading Volvo testing F1-style KERS system, cites 25% fuel economy bump [w/video]

Volvo testing F1-style KERS system, cites 25% fuel economy bump [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Apr 2013 09:30:00 EST.
With the Volvo S60 Polestar going on sale in Australia this June, Volvo has finally released images and specs for the production version of the performance sedan. While no official build number has been announced, one image of the car's steering wheel shows a serial number plaque that says "No. 000/100" indicating that production will likely be limited to just 100 units in Australia. The press release states that the Australia run of Polestar-tuned S60s is a "pilot project" and that other potential markets are "under investigation."

Although it looks very similar to the S60 Polestar Concept we first saw at the LA Auto Show last year, the production version of the car sports a few changes. Visually, the front and rear fascias have been slightly modified from the concept car, as have the matte-black wheels. Inside, we see a different steering wheel that adds the aforementioned build sequence plaque but loses the suede leather accents, and there is also a sportier looking shift lever with a chrome handle that features a Polestar logo.

As for performance figures, rather than the 508-horsepower of the S60 Polestar Concept, the production version will be limited to 350 hp and more than 368 pound-feet of torque, which is still an improvement of about 25 hp and at least 14 lb-ft over a 2013 S60 R-Design. Polestar also tuned the six-speed automatic transmission and Haldex all-wheel-drive system for optimal performance leading to a top speed of 155 miles per hour and a 0-62 mph time of 4.9 seconds. The production S60 Polestar will still get suspension, brake and aerodynamic upgrades.

For the full list of vehicle specs, scroll down for the official press release, and while pricing has yet to be announced, it will likely be far less than the $300,000 someone reportedly paid for the S60 Polestar Concept.
Continue reading First production Volvo S60 Polestar shown off

First production Volvo S60 Polestar shown off originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST.
The Volvo S60 Polestar Concept may be entering limited production in Australia and, depending how the Aussies take to this Swedish super sports sedan, could then be made available worldwide. The news comes from Austrlia's GoAuto, which claims to have received early info from its sources inside Volvo and its tuning/motorsport arm, Polestar.

Polestar released a short teaser video this week (watch it below) of what appears to be the S60 Polestar Concept clipping the snowy apex of an ice track's turn. The only information given with the teaser were the words "Limited Edition. Soon in Australia." Unveiled last June, the S60 Polestar concept has since made the rounds at auto shows, visited Jay Leno's Garage, played on the track with its future competition, and even secured a home for itself with a buyer who reportedly is paying Volvo some $300,000 to own it.

The S60 Polestar Concept is about the meanest machine one can imagine making out of Volvo's sports sedan. Packing 508 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque from its heavily modified T6 engine, then routing those revolutions through a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels, the S60 Polestar is said to cover the sprint to 62 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds. A lower and wider body, brakes by Brembo, suspension bits by Ohlins and a diet to delete some weight make this car a serious issue for M3 and C63 AMG owners everywhere. GoAuto's sources say the production version's performance will be dialed back a bit from the concept's, but we'll have to wait until Volvo and Polestar make this sedan's production official to find out by how much.
Continue reading Volvo S60 Polestar entering limited production in Australia [w/video]

Volvo S60 Polestar entering limited production in Australia [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Apr 2013 11:00:00 EST. On top of that, the S60 and V60 are lowered 15 millimeters and can be fitted with 19-inch versions of the company's Ixion wheel pattern.

The R-Design sport chassis stiffens things up, items like the rear dampers getting 20-percent stiffer while front bushings get a whopping 400-percent stiffer. Inside there's a black headliner, perforated leather mixed with nubuck and contrasting stitching on the sport seats, or a full leather option for those who love their cow, and the Adaptive Digital Display gets a blue hue when set to the Elegance appearance theme.

Buyers of the 3.0-liter T6 engine can add the Polestar performance option, which cranks things up to 329 horsepower instead of the standard 304 hp, and an exclusive accelerator pedal comes with it.
Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte has it good. He is a member of the Swedish Royal Family, he dates a model and he has been voted by Forbes as one of the "20 Hottest Young Royals." If that were not enough, he is a fairly successful racecar driver. The latter has earned him a spot on the Volvo Polestar racing team for the Swedish Touring Car Championship. The prince will be piloting a race-spec S60 in the 2013 STCC campaign.

Starting in 2008, Prince Carl Philip began competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup, where he placed as high as 11th. In 2010, he finished first in the Porsche GT3 Endurance competition, and most recently, he placed fourth in the 2012 Swedish GT GTB.

As his motorsport career up to this point suggests, the prince is quite serious about racing and the STCC is the next step up. According to Prince Carl Philip, "There is no tougher championship in Sweden and at the same time as I have respect for it, it motivates me greatly." You can read more on Prince Carl Philip's upcoming campaign with Polestar in the press release below.
Continue reading Sweden's Prince Carl Philip to race for Volvo in STCC

Sweden's Prince Carl Philip to race for Volvo in STCC originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Dec 2012 18:03:00 EST.
If, like the rest of the world, you find yourself with an insatiable desire to own the ludicrously-fast and equally sexy Polestar Volvo S60 Concept, we have some bad news for you: The machine has already found a new owner.

Some unnamed soul ponied up $300,000 for the keys to the 508-horsepower, all-wheel-drive sedan. That is a staggering sum of money for a machine that's supposed to lock horns with ilk like the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, BMW M3 and Audi RS4. While it's true the Polestar S60 claws at the tarmac with more power than any of those German creations, we likely don't need to tell you what sorts of machines can be had for that kind of cash.

Still, as of right now, there is only one Polestar S60 in the world, and this is it. Exclusivity has its price, and while Volvo is pretty clear on the fact that it doesn't expect to have to hire on new staff to take on a torrent of orders for the $300,000 sedan, Polestar will be happy to put one together for you if you have the means. Here's hoping demand proves high enough that Volvo decides to put such a machine in series production...
Polestar Volvo S60 Concept already sold for $300k originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 18:29:00 EST.
Last month, we found out that Polestar and Volvo were hard at work on a special tune of the S60 that would give the Swedish sedan an attitude for "the performance minded driver" and a right to say to the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and BMW M3, "Yes, I'm looking at you." Speculation had been that the S60 Polestar Performance concept could fit the V8 from the XC90, but more frenetic minds prevailed, bolting a Garret turbocharger onto the T6 currently available in the S60 and raising it to 508 horsepower and 424 foot-pounds of torque - boosting the standard numbers by 208 hp and 99 lb-ft. That's good enough for a proclaimed 0-to-62 mph sprint in 3.9 seconds and a terminal velocity of "more than 300 km/h" (over 186 mph).

Wrapped around that engine are the promised 30-mm lower and 20-mm wider body, six-piston Brembos on the 380-mm front discs, a reinforced chassis, upgraded Haldex all-wheel drive, Öhlins three-way suspension and 19-inch wheels on 265-section rubber all around. Other tweaks include a six-speed manual transmission, increased track of 20 mm up front and 40 mm out back and a stainless steel exhaust. Weight has been reduced by 204 pounds compared to the North American-spec S60, and naturally, Alcantara shows up in force inside.

There is only one for the moment, built for "one specific client." Polestar says more details will be revealed soon, and more such sedans could follow depending on market response. Scroll down to read about the most vicious S60 ever, and have a look at it in the gallery of high-res photos.
Continue reading Polestar Volvo S60 concept stuns with 508 horsepower, six-speed manual and AWD

Polestar Volvo S60 concept stuns with 508 horsepower, six-speed manual and AWD originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 10:00:00 EST.
Remember the hotted-up Volvo S60 that's set to take the fight to the BMW M3 with enhancements from Polestar? The Swedish sport sedan we told you about is apparently not nearly as far off as you might think. According to a report from the TTA racing group, Volvo is set to debut its new steroid-enhanced sedan on June 16 at the Gothenburg City Arena race.

According to Polestar Marketing Director Hans Bååth, "The performance concept road-car is a spinoff of our work evaluating and developing the S60 for racing."

Mum's still the word on exactly what lies under the hood of the new Polestar S60. Rumors have suggested either a Yamaha-sourced V8 (a version of the engine that is used in the XC90) or a boosted version of the turbocharged inline-six currently found in the S60. Guess we'll just have to wait until the 16th to find out.

There are several things you might think of when Volvo comes to mind, but performance isn't necessarily one of them. Volvo is working on that image, however, and Polestar is a big part of that.

The tuning firm and racing garage has been partnering with Gothenburg on several fronts, not the least of them being the company's officially sanctioned touring car team whose latest S60 racer is pictured above. Those efforts have also been seeping into the Swedish automaker's publicly available road cars, but nothing has approached the kind of levels that AMG applies to Mercedes-Benz or the M division does with BMW vehicles.

That's been long rumored to be in for a change, however, and the latest reports give us a sneak peek at what the two firms have in store. According to Swedish car mag Teknikens Varld, Volvo and Polestar are working on a full-scale assault on the territory held by the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and BMW M3, among others.

The donor vehicle would be the S60 sedan, but the question remains just what would motivate such a beast. Sources suggest the Yamaha-built V8 from the XC90 could be employed. In stock form it produces 315 horsepower, but Noble uses it in the M600 with a pair of turbochargers that boost output up to 641 hp. A nice, round 400 hp should be well within reason, then, and Polestar's considerable capabilities.

The S60 Polestar could, however, go with modifying an engine already available in the stock S60. For its C30 concept, Polestar bolted a bigger turbo onto the 2.5-liter five for 411 hp, and recently managed to squeeze 325 hp out of the stock turbo six with just an ECU reflash. Whatever the engine, we're told to expect a Haldex all-wheel-drive system, Öhlins suspension and Brembo brakes stuffed into 19-inch BBS alloys wearing Pirelli PZero rubber. Consider our interests piqued.
Polestar working on Volvo S60 to take on M3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 May 2012 16:01:00 EST.
Volvo may not be the first name you'd think of in racing, but it stands as a dominant force in European touring cars. Before stepping up to the World Touring Car Championship last year, Volvo and its partner Polestar Racing had come to dominate the Swedish Touring Car Championship. While that series has since expanded to all of Scandinavia, Volvo made other plans in switching over to the TTA Racing Elite League. And this is the car with which it will be contesting the new series.

Rather than field the same C30 touring car which Volvo and Polestar had fielded in the STCC and WTCC, the TTA racer revealed here is based (or at least looks like) the S60 sedan. Under that carbon fiber body sits a 420-horsepower V6 driving the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox and boosted by a similar KERS regenerative braking system as employed in Formula One.

The livery has yet to be finalized, so for now Polestar has decked the S60 TTA out in the same shade of baby blue that makes its other touring cars, that 450-horsepower all-wheel-drive C30 prototype and for that matter the Alonso-era Renault F1 cars so perplexingly devious.
Volvo is giving S60 buyers - courtesy of Polestar - a chance to juice up their S60s without going all the way to the R-Design model. Polestar is the tuner responsible for Volvo's STCC program and the firm has engineered an ECU reflash that boosts the S60's power numbers from 300 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque to 325 hp and 354 lb-ft.

Swedespeed was given a chance to test a pre-production version of the software and had it installed on their project S60 T6 AWD. The unofficial results were a 0.3-second drop in the 0-60 mile-per-hour time, getting the S60 within sight of the lighter, rear-wheel-drive BMW 335i and the heavier, all-wheel-drive Audi S4. Mid-range torque, though, appeared to be the big winner, with Swedespeed noting improved passing chops.

When it's officially offered, the upgrade is expected to cost around $1,500 or so, and be a quick install at the dealer. Fuel economy numbers aren't on the table yet, but Swedespeed will have more details of their time with the car soon. Follow the link for the full story.
Swedespeed tests Volvo S60 AWD with 325-hp Polestar reflash beta originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST.
Reports of Volvo and Polestar collaborating on road car offerings appear to be coming to fruition. Following rumors that Volvo had solicited the racing garage's services to increase the output on the S60 and XC60 R-Design models came word that a new line of Performance Concept Prototypes were in the works. Now, Volvo's Australian unit has teamed with both Polestar and Heico Sportiv to produce the prototype you see here.

Called the S60 Performance Project, it's based on the new R-Design model, with the upped 325-horsepower output. So what else have Polestar and Heico squeezed out of the S60? A new exhaust, for starters, and a substantially revised suspension that's been lowered by 15 millimeters with monotube damping and stiffer springs, mounted to new 19-inch alloys wearing Pirelli rubber.

Nothing earth-shattering, then, but Volvo Australia says if there's enough demand, it could offer the sportier sedan through its own dealership network, instead of making customers source parts from aftermarket suppliers. Which would also, of course, have the added benefit of landing under warranty, which in turn makes us wonder if this could be another Australian touring-car-for-the-road we could stand to see here on American roads. Find the details in the press release after the jump and the high-res images in the gallery for more.
Continue reading Volvo teams up with Polestar and Heico for S60 Performance Project

Volvo teams up with Polestar and Heico for S60 Performance Project originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 14:30:00 EST. Volvo has confirmed that the U.S. market is primed to receive a redesigned XC90. Automotive News had the chance to sit down with Doug Speck, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, and suss out the automaker's plans for the future. While pushing for increased sales of the new S60 is part of Volvo's short-term strategy, bringing in a replacement for its aging XC90 is certainly a key component to the marque's long-term success.

There is no talk yet of a timetable or just what's in store for the next generation XC90. Now that the S60 sedan has been given a well-conceived makeover, we have to assume that Volvo's dealers are chomping at the bit for the strong-selling XC60 to get a new-and-improved big brother.
Volvo confirms all-new XC90 for U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 May 2011 13:29:00 EST.
Volvo can stick another feather in its safety cap. The 2012 S60 has officially been awarded an IIHS Top Safety Pick judgement by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. That means the sedan managed to net top ratings in all IIHS crash tests, including front, side, rollover and rear evaluations. Vehicles awarded the Top Safety Pick designation must also come standard with electronic stability control.

According to the IIHS, it's been a while since the S60 has carried the institute's highest honor. The vehicle's previous generation had no problem netting good ratings in both front and rear tests, but was only rated as acceptable in side impact evaluations. Additionally, the new roof strength tests weren't in place for the vehicle's last iteration. IIHS says that Volvo improved the design of the S60 enough to net higher side impact ratings and pass the new rollover tests with flying colors.

IIHS says that the roof of the S60 stood up to 4.95 times the weight of the vehicle. Currently, the federal standard is only requires a vehicle to withstand a force equivalent to 1.5 times its weight. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Automobile has compiled a list of the 2011 model year vehicles deserving of all-star recognition. To show off each choice, the buff book has enlisted illustrator Daniel Stolle to turn each vehicle into a child's toy. The list of 2011 Automobile All-Stars features:

BMW 3 Series

Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon

Volvo and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration have announced that the Swedish automaker will recall some 6,046 vehicles from the 2011 model year due to a possible flaw in the engine control module. According to NHTSA, a fuel shut-off parameter in the software is too sensitive, and under certain conditions, the engine may stall. Volvo is concerned that the problem may lead to an accident. A total of four models are covered in the recall, including the 2011 S60 and S80 sedans along with the XC60 and XC70 softroaders.

Volvo is scheduled to begin the recall on or before December 10, and owners will have their vehicle's software updated free of charge to fix the problem. Concerned drivers may contact Volvo directly at 1.800.458.1552 or at customercare@volvoforlife.com.

While it may seem like every magazine worth its bar-code is clamoring to select its own Car of the Year, over in Europe things are a bit more civilized. Seven publications from seven different countries get together each year to nominate their collective Car of the Year, speaking in one united voice.

The process takes place over the course of months. First comes the nominees, then the finalists and ultimately the solitary winner. The super best-friends have just arrived at that middle step, announcing the finalists for 2011, and as in years past, it's heavily loaded with European vehicles, but the list is not without its novelty.

The finalists came down to the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, Citroën C3/DS3, Renault/Dacia Duster, Ford C-Max/Grand C-Max, Nissan Leaf, Opel/Vauxhall Meriva and Volvo S60/V60. The Alfa's nomination comes exactly a decade after its predecessor, the 147, took the award upon its launch. The Leaf represents the first time an electric vehicle has made it this far in the selection process. And the budget Dacia's selection is of course highly symbolic of the economic climate from which most of the world is only beginning to recuperate. The winner will be announced on November 29, so stay tuned.

It seems that the Volvo S60 is set to get a wee bit less naughty for the 2012 model year as the Swedish automaker rolls out a base model for the American market. Sure, we've sampled the 2011 edition and were mostly impressed by the safety-first company's latest effort, but so far, only the range-topping S60 T6 model with all-wheel drive (shown above) has been available.

While Volvo has yet to offer up all the details of what's in store for 2012, a document from the Volvo Overseas Delivery program managed to make its way online, and it leads us to believe that the base engine for the S60 will indeed be a turbocharged five-cylinder as before. The good news is that the workhorse mill, otherwise known as the T5, has been upgraded a bit for its new duty, reportedly putting out 250 horses rather than the 227 currently on offer.

In related news, the same documentation indicates that the cost for a new S60 using Volvo's overseas delivery program will be $29,880. Expect the U.S. MSRP to be somewhat (though not substantially) higher. In addition to the T5 engine, that will net you a front-wheel drive S60 without the T6's Dynamic Chassis, speed-sensitive steering or leather seats (Volvo's T-Tec upholstery will be standard). Want to know more? Hit up the Kilometer to see the full leaked document.

Volvo has been gearing up the promotion machine for its new S60, and it's taking an unusual tack, referring to its latest sedan as the sportiest and "Naughtiest Volvo Ever." This, of course, may seem a bit like proclaiming that Greg was the rebel in the Brady Bunch. It might have been true, but the Swedish automaker's lineup hasn't exactly been fraught with the sort of characters that your parents warned you about, has it?

If this S60 is 'naughty,' it's probably in the same way that going to prom with your mother is 'naughty.' It's wrong, certainly... particularly for the couple sharing your limo. It might even be a bit dangerous - for your social life - but at the end of the day, the core wholesomeness of both mothers and Volvos can't be denied, right?

Well, perhaps not. After all, although it was developed under the Ford umbrella, this new S60 comes to market with new ownership (China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group) and new leadership (former Volkswagen of America head Stefan Jacoby). And that is some rather sexy sheetmetal - particularly when it's slathered in such an assertive paint color. But what's going on beneath the skin? You'll have to follow the jump to find out.
