<a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2010/10/15/aggressive-engine-downsizing-held-back-by-low-speed-preignition/">Engine downsizing</a> is considered an effective method for <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2010/05/11/fevs-extremely-downsized-engine-is-a-0-7-liter-mill-with-amazin/">reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency</a> and that's precisely why many automakers have developed smaller mills to replace older, larger motors. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/kia/">Kia</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/fiat/">Fiat</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/audi/">Audi</a> and many others already announced their intentions <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2010/04/09/audi-pursues-widespread-engine-downsizing-to-increase-fuel-econo/">to introduce downsized engines</a> in upcoming models. We can now add <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volvo/">Volvo</a> to the ranks of automakers developing new low-displacement powerplants.<br />
<br />
According to <em>Autocar</em>, Volvo plans to introduce downsized gas- and diesel-fueled engines across its model range beginning in 2013. The automaker is also eying the addition of clean diesels that displace less than two liters - including a 1.6-liter engine that puts out 113 horsepower - and is even discussing the possibility of importing oil burners here to the States. Volvo's Chief Executive Officer, Stefan Jacoby, tells <em>Autocar</em> that the company is "taking a deep look at whether it will introduce the diesels to the U.S.," though nothing has been decided yet.<br />
<br />
What do you think - would bringing over a range of diesels help improve Volvo's fortunes in the States?<br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"><small>Click above to view the Volvo D5 engine in all its high-resolution wonder</small></span><br style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;" /></div>
<br />By now, Volvo has been almost completely integrated into the Ford empire, but with its parent company looking to offload the Swedish subsidiary, Volvo's going to have to demonstrate its worth as a standalone automaker. Developing its own engines is a good place to start, and Volvo has just unveiled its own unique diesel powerplant.<br /><br />Replacing the existing D5 diesel, the new variant continues the five-cylinder tradition, but that's where the similarities end. The new mill displaces 2.4 liters, supplemented by twin sequential turbochargers, ceramic glow-plugs and piezoelectric fuel injectors. The new tech helps the D5 generate 205 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of twist, but more importantly, the engine now meets the stringent Euro 5 emissions standard with only 164g of CO2 per kilometer, while returning an impressive 45.6 mpg. The engine will be available in the British market S80 sedan in a few months, but unfortunately it isn't earmarked to cross the Atlantic. All we can do is look at the photos in the gallery and read the details in the press release after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-d5-diesel-engine">Volvo D5 diesel engine</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-d5-diesel-engine/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/56721vol_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-d5-diesel-engine/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/56721-b-vol_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-d5-diesel-engine/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/56721-a-vol_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/07/for-eur-eyes-only-volvo-releases-new-five-cylinder-diesel-in-s8/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>For Eur-eyes Only: Volvo releases new five-cylinder diesel in S80</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/07/for-eur-eyes-only-volvo-releases-new-five-cylinder-diesel-in-s8/">For Eur-eyes Only: Volvo releases new five-cylinder diesel in S80</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 16:59:00 EST. The company <a href="http://www.just-auto.com/article.aspx?ID=95309">reportedly</a> has plans to introduce three new diesel powered vehicles by the fall. We are unclear on where Volvo intends to target with its little green <strike>men</strike> cars besides emerging markets such as China and Russia, but we'd love to see some more stylish and fuel efficient options in the U.S. It's too early to speculate on what vehicles Volvo is referring to, but that's never stopped us before. The C30 is currently the Swedish automakers smallest vehicle and at last year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/FrankfurtMotorShow/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a>, Volvo showed off its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/20/frankfurt-preview-volvo-c30-efficiency/">C30 Efficiency concept</a>. We'd say that the timing certainly appears right for a production version of just such a machine. After all, who wouldn't appreciate the 52.26 miles per gallon from its 105 horsepower 1.6L turbodiesel engine? <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency">Volvo C30 Efficiency</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.just-auto.com/article.aspx?ID=95309">Just-Auto</a> - sub. required]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/03/volvo-planning-more-small-models-more-diesels/">Volvo planning more small models, more diesels</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 03 Jul 2008 14:32:00 EST.
