<br />
According to the scribes at <em>Automobile Magazine</em>, <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> isn't planning to offer its diminutive Up! city car here in the United States. Boo! Interestingly enough, though, the electric version, imaginatively known as the E-Up!, is said to be earmarked for select U.S. markets.<br />
<br />
What those U.S. markets may be is unknown, but we'd imagine it would be something like the five markets where <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/nissan">Nissan </a>plans to initially offer its <a href="http://autoblog.com/nissan/leaf">Leaf</a> Stateside... and you can bet Southern California (as always) will be on the list.<br />
<br />
Last we heard, the E-Up! being developed for America wold <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/22/report-larger-vw-e-up-could-come-to-the-states/">likely be a bit larger</a> than the model sold overseas and wouldn't be offered for sale for another few years. Sure, you may want your zero-emissions goodness earlier than that, but we can stand to wait a little while longer for the "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/15/frankfurt-2009-world-premiere-of-the-volkswagen-e-up-concept/">Beetle of the 21st Century</a>," right?<br />

<br />
Today in Berlin, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a> unveiled the first of 500 electric drive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/golf">Golfs</a> produced for a consumer test that starts next year. The battery powered Golf was shown at the launch of the National Platform for Electric Mobility, a public-private partnership to promote electric vehicles in Germany. <br />
<br />
The e-Golf is propelled by an 85-kilowatt electric motor integrated with a single speed transmission and differential. The motor produces 199 pound-feet of torque from zero rpm which is sufficient to accelerate the Golf to 62 mph in 11.8 seconds. An air cooled 26.5 kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery pack is mounted under the rear seat and cargo floor and center tunnel. VW claims the Golf can go about 93 miles on a charge. <br />
<br />
The consumer fleet test will allow Volkswagen to gather real world data before it launches three production EVs in 2013. The first production model with be the Up blue-e-motion city car followed by the next generation Golf blue-e-motion and finally the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/golf">Jetta blue-e-motion</a>.<br />

<a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-milano-taxi-concept-0/#2906435"><img vspace="4" hspace="0" border="1" align="right" alt="" class="right border" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/green.autoblog.com/media/2010/04/db2010au00430largeopt.jpg" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a> is unveiling a new compact <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/ev-plug-in/">battery-powered</a> taxi concept called the Milano at the Hanover Trade Show in Germany this week. The styling draws heavily on the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2007/11/14/la-2007-volkswagen-space-up-blue/">Space Up! Blue concept</a> that debuted at the 2007 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/la-auto-show/">LA Auto Show</a>. One big difference, however, is that VW designers have eliminated the rear door on the driver's side so that passengers can only get in and out at the curb. The curb-side portal has likewise been expanded with a large forward-sliding door and the front passenger seat has given way to luggage space. The Milano Taxi concept also features a similar touch screen monitor setup to those already being used in some New York City cabs. <br />
<br />
Like the production electric vehicles that Volkswagen will start building from 2013, the Milano Taxi uses lithium ion batteries. A 45 kilowatt-hour pack is mounted in the floor and provides a claimed 186-mile driving range on the EU driving cycle. The Milano Taxi is purely a concept at this point, but since it appears to be based on Volkswagen's "<a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2007/12/07/bologna-motor-show-vw-shows-new-small-family-together-for-first/">New Small Family</a>" of low- and zero-emissions vehicles, we wouldn't be surprised to see the German automaker put a similar vehicle into production as an easy way to get more electric vehicles into the field a few years from now. High-res shots below, press release after the jump.<br />

<div align="center"><em><strong><small>VW Up! concept - Click above for a high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />According to a report on <em>Auto Express</em>, Volkswagen plans to debut a new eco-friendly concept at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/frankfurt-auto-show/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a> in September that could potentially rival the Chevy Volt-based <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/opelampera">Opel Ampera</a> in Europe. Unlike the automaker's previous green concepts like the hybrid <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/TwinDrive/">Golf TwinDrive</a> and diesel-powered <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/11/detroit-2009-volkswagen-bluesport-concept-turbodiesel-done-rig/">BlueSport Roadster</a>, the new and as-yet unnamed concept will be fully electric.<br /><br />Beyond that, details are scarce. There's some speculation that the new EV may be based on the Volkswagen's New Small Family architecture that underpins the tiny Up! city car concept first seen way back in 2007, but that's not yet confirmed. In any case, the Frankfurt-bound electric vehicle is likely to use lithium ion batteries <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/02/12/volkswagen-and-toshiba-to-collaborate-on-electric-drive-systems/">supplied by Toshiba</a>.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-up-concept">Volkswagen up! concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-up-concept/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/09/db2007al01669_large_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-up-concept/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/09/db2007au01558_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-up-concept/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/09/db2007au01559_large_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-up-concept/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/09/db2007au01561_large_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-up-concept/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/09/db2007au01562_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/235783/vws_ampera_is_coming.html">Auto Express</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/19/report-volkswagen-bringing-new-ev-concept-to-frankfurt/">REPORT: Volkswagen bringing new EV concept to Frankfurt</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 19 May 2009 14:58:00 EST. The German automaker has big plans to invest in technologies to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, but most of the efficiency increases will come from refinements made to gasoline and diesel-burning powerplants.<br /><br />VW is hedging its bets for the future, though, having recently <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/02/12/volkswagen-and-toshiba-to-collaborate-on-electric-drive-systems/">partnered up with Toshiba</a> to develop high-tech electric drive systems for future automobile applications. That's great, but Winterkorn says their adoption is "very far away." In the meantime (and very conveniently), Volkswagen has got some excellent diesel engines in many <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/09/in-the-autobloggreen-garage-2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/">varying wrappers</a> that it would be happy to sell anyone looking to decrease their daily fuel spending bills.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090303/ANE02/903039976/1164">Automotive News</a> - sub. req'd]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/vw-ceo-daily-use-of-electric-cars-very-far-away/">VW CEO: Daily use of electric cars "very far away"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 18:32:00 EST.
