Full Disclosure: in my younger days, I loved nothing more than tormenting passengers with my behind-the-wheel hijinks. Once, after a particularly artful handbrake turn on a two-lane at around 50 miles per hour, I left one backseat occupant crying in their own lap. This isn't necessarily something to be proud of, but it gives you a glimpse into why it is that I find this ad from Pepsi so damn disappointing. The premise is beautiful. Take NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, give him a disguise and set him loose upon some unsuspecting used car dealer. Hilarity ensues.

Except that this Pepsi Max commercial is so obviously staged, it can't help but feel like some ham-fisted marketing fail. From the strategically placed aftermarket cupholder mounted mid-dash for the hidden camera to the fact that the supposed dealer Camaro is displayed as a 2009 model (Hint: Chevrolet didn't make any), this clip is about as organic as a Twinkie. Still, we would never turn down a chance to watch Gordon thrash on a rental-spec coupe - only problem is, he probably didn't even do the driving himself. Check it out below.
Continue reading Watch NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon put one over on a used car dealer... sorta

Watch NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon put one over on a used car dealer... sorta originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Mar 2013 12:57:00 EST.
Toyota tried to make family hauler commercials cool with its "Swagger Wagon" spot for the Sienna minivan back in 2010, but now Fiat looks to have created the unrated version of Toyota's idea with a web ad for its new Fiat 500L called "The Motherhood." Trying to cater to the 500L's target demographic, no punches are pulled as this blonde British mom attempts to describe all the joys of family raising.

We're not going to spoil anything for you here, but if you're hoping for useful information about the larger 500L, then this commercial isn't for you. If you're looking for an entertaining way to kill a few minutes, then check the (now viral) video out by scrolling below. With more double entendres than you'll know what do with, though, we have to warn you that this video's language might be a little unsafe for conservative workplaces.
Continue reading Is the Fiat 500L the new, smaller swagger wagon?

Is the Fiat 500L the new, smaller swagger wagon? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 13:00:00 EST.
Marketing can be a very strange business. Convincing a man or woman (or child, really) that they absolutely cannot live without the latest, greatest new bit of technology oftentimes takes a unique approach. In the "online film promoting the Toyota GT86" you'll see below, created by agency Happiness Brussels, men are reverse-psychologied into thinking a new sports coupe will make them more masculine by getting their loved ones to hate them. Or something like that. We think.

In any case, we suggest you watch the video below to see how much fun men can have with a GT86 - or Scion FR-S or Subaru BRZ, presumably - at the expense of their significant others. Fair warning: There's a potential Not Safe For Work moment in the ad: beware of a brief male butt shot about 44 seconds in.

Marketing. Gotta love it. Unless you're married to a man. Or something like that. We think. Whatever, just watch.
Continue reading Buy a Toyota GT86 and your wife will hate you

Buy a Toyota GT86 and your wife will hate you originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 19:29:00 EST.
We've got to hand it to Ford of Europe - this is one of the most brilliant marketing stunts we've ever seen. Blending the correct amounts of populist outrage, mockery of the common man, hidden cameras, big budget technology, and gritty urban realism into one literal over-the-top promotion that - get this - is actually relevant to the vehicle it is designed to promote? Well, we're impressed, to say the least.

We won't spoil the punchline to the video, created by ad agency Ogilvy of Paris (according to Co.Create), but for anyone who's ever had to suffer through living in a big city and parking on the street, you'll be pleased.

And for those of you who might occasionally do a little park-by-touch yourself? Ford's new Focus with Active Park Assist is just the vehicle for you.

We're speechless.

Well, maybe not... but, at the very least, we're surprised by Scion's latest marketing campaign for its iQ minicar. There are a lot of reasons to be interested in the iQ - its small size makes for easy parking, it's not terribly expensive and it's nicely fuel efficient - but its ability to do donuts with four full-size occupants isn't one of them.

Not just four occupants. How about four bikini models? Not your style? There's four dudes, four bikers and four police officers, too, each in their own video. They're all eating donuts and drinking milk while being driven around in backward smoky burnouts and reverse donuts.

And suddenly, we're leaning toward speechless yet again.

Controversy's rearing its tawdry head Down Under as a Toyota film contest has got some laughing, others crying foul play. The Clever Film Competition solicited contestants to come up with 30-second commercial clips for the Toyota Yaris, awarding $7000 (well, Australian dollars anyway) to the winning entry. And while the rules stated that the entries cannot be "immoral" or "contain any obscene language," one contestant evidently felt the boundaries ought to be pushed a little. And the judges evidently agreed.

The winning entry - entitled "Clean Getaways" - portrays a young Yaris driver picking up his date and encountering her father at the door. The exchange between them is packed with more innuendo than a porn star's Lamborghini, and though Toyota's local spokesman says they're not distancing themselves from the clip, public outcry has resulted in it being pulled from the contest website. Fortunately, we've got it posted after the jump for your enjoyment... just don't watch it with the boss hovering around. Or the wife, for that matter. On second thought, better watch it when no one's around. But watch it just the same. Cheers to Mark and Oleg for the tips!
Debates are still swirling over whether or not the recently posted video showing a 14-year-old crashing his family's brand new Ford GT500 is real or a viral video from Ford itself. You'll no doubt spot this carboarding commercial for the Nissan Qashqai for the marketing tool it is, but you still get to see a small CUV tackle the half pipe with Tony Hawk-like moves. Follow the jump for the second commercial in the series.

[Source: Fresh Creation]
Continue reading VIDEO: Hitting the half pipe in a Nissan Qashqai

VIDEO: Hitting the half pipe in a Nissan Qashqai originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Nov 2006 18:41:00 EST.
