Not satisfied with cars that manage crash forces well enough to avoid spilling your drink, and engines that run so clean they'll barely asphyxiate ants, a new crash test is reportedly coming in the works from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Along with the test will come new dummies and new testing equipment, all of which means it's likely to have a big impact on future car designs. The side-impact pole test will simulate side collisions with objects like trees or telephone poles, a type of accident that current side-impact tests don't accurately simulate.

According to The New York Times, the new test will use a 10-inch round pole that will collide with the car at speeds of up to 20 mph. A 75-degree angle will be used, and the point of impact will be just aft of the A-pillar. Naturally, automakers won't have to pass the test all at once, the standard will be phased in. For 2011, 20 percent of an automaker's fleet will have to meet the standard and by 2014, the pole crash standard will be at 100 percent - all new cars will have to comply.

It's a change that could potentially change the face of auto design, the same way pedestrian impact standards in Europe have led to some peculiar front sheetmetal. Materials changes may also be employed to meet the regulation, with additional high-strength steel being substituted. The more conventional metals currently used are easier to form, while stronger metals require all sorts of hot pressing and tempering to be put into shape. Manufacturing cost will go up, which means prices will probably also increase, or profit will decrease while prices hold steady. Safe cars are a laudable goal, but how safe is safe enough? Follow the jump to see a video of how Ford's 2010 Mustang GT convertible and coupe models fare, then let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

It was three years ago that Cadillac switched to ad agency Modernista!, and one year leater it rolled out its "Life. Liberty. And the Pursuit." campaign. In a four-sentence statement put out by Cadillac General Manager Bryan Nesbitt, the brand is looking for a new agency and Modernista! "has elected not to participate" in the search.

There have been various reasons given for the split. An agency rep said it was down to "creative and strategic differences." Another report said it was about fees and Cadillac not being able to stick with a small independent, versus going with a shop under the same corporate umbrella as GM's other ad agencies. And Fritz Henderson said "We think we can do better."

Cadillac did well enough with the Kate Walsh ads, and its Reignition spot created the kind of anticipation the brand sorely needs. We look forward to seeing what kind of "better" Henderson and Lutz have in mind. In the meantime, follow the jump to check out some memorable Caddy ads from Modernista and a spot from the campaign before, "Breakthrough."

It looks like Wales hired Danny Boyle or Quentin Tarantino to create a PSA to showcase the dangers of texting while driving (it was actually Peter Watkins-Hughes). As these things do, it starts off with a couple of teenagers doing what teenagers do -- in this case, sending text messages from behind the wheel. The accident is cinematic in its graphic detail, trauma, and blood. Just when you think it's over... well, we won't spoil it, but let's just say it ain't short and it ain't pretty. All that's missing are the zombies.
The other day, we pointed you toward a video produced by General Motors that is part of a series on the building of the pre-production Chevy Volt prototypes. That video showed the model's IVER (Integration Vehicle Engineering Release) bodies being assembled, welded and painted in the body shop at the pre-production operations center in Warren MI. However, before you can weld and paint, you have to take sheets of steel and stamp them into the right shapes. It turns out that there were other videos that came ahead the body shop video show this aspect of the Volt's development.

In the stamping shown above, you can see how the engineers go from the mathematical models of the parts to machining the prototype dies. Unlike the production dies, these prototypes are not as tough and are only useful for producing a limited number of parts. Because the steel springs back somewhat after it comes out of the press, the dies don't have the same shape as the final part. As a result, there is often some trial and error in creating them. Once the final die shape is determined, it is scanned and the data is sent to the production tool and die shop. Check out the videos after the jump.

[Source: General Motors]
Continue reading VIDEO: Before you weld a Chevrolet Volt, you have to stamp out the bodies

VIDEO: Before you weld a Chevrolet Volt, you have to stamp out the bodies originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 10:29:00 EST.
Looks like there could be too many cooks in the Buick PR kitchen, and the soup is looking worried. For the new GM to get on its feet, Buick has to find its feet. To do that, Buick has created a number of ad campaigns meant to showcase its new product and bring new, younger buyers to the brand. One of the commercials in the campaign is called "Photo Shoot," and according to a report, the recently empowered VP of marketing, Bob Lutz, isn't particularly pleased with the spot.

Both Lutz and GM CEO Fritz Henderson don't believe the commercial positions Buick as a luxury brand that competes with Lexus. They have told GM's ad agency, Leo Burnett, that it needs to do better. However -- and here's where it gets convoluted -- the ad was created by an independent shop that Leo Burnett was told to hire to do the work. Mark LaNeve, GM's head of marketing, allegedly instructed Burnett to hire Gary Topolewski, a former creative director at Burnett who worked with LaNeve on Cadillac's Break Through ad campaign, and who now runs another ad agency.

The other character in the middle of all of this is Buick VP Susan Docherty, who defended the commercial. She said it fulfills its role of promoting a revamped Buick brand, adding that she looks "forward to working with Bob and sharing spots two through six with him."
The all-new 2010 Jaguar XJ has finally been revealed, and it's a big departure for the Leaping Cat crew from Coventry. Sure, it shares a number of outward similarities with the already-available XF, but benefits from being designed after the drop dead gorgeous C-XF concept (unlike the production XF). And it certainly doesn't look like anything like the outgoing XJ, which may only be around seven years old but visually it comes off as much older.

If you haven't already read about our time spent with the new XJ in England last month, go do that first. Afterwards, you can follow the jump to view nine videos just released by Jaguar about its new large car. Included are general driving and beauty shots, footage of the interior and interviews with Ian Callum and other top Jaguar execs. Plus, we've expanded our high-res gallery below with official photos from today's launch event... just why is a dapper looking Jay Leno smiling so wryly? Finally, if you're wondering how much you need to raid your 401k and couch cushions for, you'll want to check out Jag's official pricing by clicking here.

Gallery: 2010 Jaguar XJ

Continue reading VIDEO: 2010 Jaguar XJ in motion, interior and interviews + expanded gallery and pricing!

VIDEO: 2010 Jaguar XJ in motion, interior and interviews + expanded gallery and pricing! originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 19:59:00 EST.
You can't always get what you want. That's the reality of life, especially when you're talking about the ultra-exclusive Pagani Zonda. One buyer in England, reported to go by the name Peter Saywell, apparently wanted to get his hands on the limited-edition Zonda Cinque, but after all five sold out, he commissioned the factory in Modena to create the special one-off you see here.

Instantly discernible from other Zondas by its unique paint job and four-abreast tailpipes, the Zonda PS reportedly packs a 650 hp version of the Mercedes AMG V12 powering its stablemates - some fifty horses more than the Zonda F but a little shy of the Cinque and track-bound R versions - driving through the sequential transmission developed for the Zonda's highly anticipated successor. With its exclusive specifications, the Zonda PS will be worth even more than other versions of the Pagani supercar, which are already trading well over their list prices on the open market.
AutoCar readers have voted on the year's best car commercial, and unsurprisingly, it's not from America. Neither is AutoCar, sure, but that still doesn't quite explain why we get GM's Our Country ads and the rest of you get ninja kittens and singing dogs. We're not even sure how singing dogs sell cars - which might be why we don't get them - but they're a lot more fun. The dog can try to explain himself in this year's winning video after the jump.

[Source: Automoto Portal]
Continue reading VIDEO: AutoCar Ad of the Year - Volkswagen's Singing Dog

VIDEO: AutoCar Ad of the Year - Volkswagen's Singing Dog originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 19:28:00 EST. Kisco at Grand Prix New York for the first annual (hopefully) Garage419 Invitational. Put simply, it was great. Big props to Matt Farah and the crew at Next New Networks for organizing the whole shindig, which put a big, fun group of guys (and one gal) together for an afternoon of karting and comraderie for a good cause -- Racing 4 Research and the Children's Tumor Foundation. The event raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $9,000. If you missed out on donating, and want to add to the tally, you can still do so by clicking here. Just because the event's over doesn't mean the fundraising's stopped.

Farah had some fun with the field, making sure the course was nice and wet during qualifying to ensure that slippery fun would be had by all. After qualifying, we all lined up for a Le Mans-style start and proceeded to race for the next hour and ten minutes. I was paired up David Noto, an all-around good guy who's also fast in a go-kart. Together, we finished 15th out of the 26-kart grid, thanks in large part to David ripping off very fast laps (in the 1:01 range) during the final leg, in which he picked up two positions all by himself. (Your humble correspondent's fastest lap was around 1:06.) You can see the final rankings over at Garage 419.com, and if you follow the jump , you can watch G419's 2-part extravaganza along with a third video produced by Team Polizei's Alex Roy and co.

Thanks again to Garage419 for having us, and thanks to all who donated to the cause!

Garage419 Invitational wrap-up originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 13:03:00 EST.
Citroen has let slip another drip in the GT by Citroen reveal, and this time it's a video showing off the dramatic shapes of "The Drive of Your Life." Dig those mirrors, and the glasshouse swept back in monumental fashion. Whatever is pushing the car's massive rims apparently needs a lot of air, with two raked scoops behind the canopy and two more on the sides ahead of the rear wheels. And the rear end of the car looks like -- dare we say it -- a tail... It's Mach 5 if the car comes together like we expect, or platypus if it doesn't. The Paris Motor Show reveal is in but a few days, and you can mark us down as officially excited.
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 New Look Citroen C4 and robot

We often wonder why French wine, fashion and architecture make total sense to us, yet French commercials often make us go "Um, ok, all right...." Citroen's C4 dancing robot first appeared back in 2004 -- well before Optimus Prime and crew teamed up with film director Michael Bay -- and since then he's done four more commercials to showcase the car that is "alive with technology."

With this latest clip, make that "staying alive with technology." Roaming the streets of New York, he's kitted out in chrome teeth and a glitter beret, jiving out to the Bee Gees while he performs style checks in any mirrored surface and poses for pictures. We have to admit his dance moves are hot, but Ironhide would probably shoot him if given the chance.

As for his alter ego, the New Look Citroen C4, it gets a grille, curvier hood and headlight treatment to match the C5. In back, transparent crystal taillamps replace the previous units. Inside, Citroen's latest NaviDrive has a 7-inch translucent screen pre-programmed for all of Europe. Two new engines, developed with BMW, will provide the car with 120 hp or 150 hp. Most intriguing, the car comes with an integrated, scented air freshener -- because all that dancing can make a robot sweat. Watch the new commercial for yourself after the jump.

Gallery: New Look Citroen C4 and Robot

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading VIDEO: New Citroen C4 actually a dancing robot

VIDEO: New Citroen C4 actually a dancing robot originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Sep 2008 15:59:00 EST.
Jack White, one half of the Whites in the White Stripes, wrote and produced the new theme song for Quantum of Solace, sung by White and Alicia Keyes. Turns out that White also -- unwittingly and unhappily -- wrote the new theme song for Coke Zero. Coca-Cola has used an instrumental version of "Another Way to Die," as well as a couple of Astons, to promote its diet drink that tastes like a diet drink even though they say it doesn't. In our opinion, the commercial gets a resounding "meh," but the song is thoroughly groovy. Follow the jump to check it out. Thanks for the tip, Marcus!

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading Coke Zero (Zero Seven) commercial features new Bond theme

Coke Zero (Zero Seven) commercial features new Bond theme originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Sep 2008 18:03:00 EST.
The trailer for the latest Bond film is out, and you could be disappointed: they pushed the release date of the film in the U.S. back a week. If you can get over that, you'll find that everything else is two minutes and twenty-eight seconds of "Holy %$#@! that was awesome!" It's almost like they took that ridiculous (as in: good) intro from Casino Royale and turned it into an entire film. If there's enough storyline to keep us interested and tie it all together, well, then this movie is going to be the best payback tale since The Professional. The in-game texture looks primo and the storyline sections are a nice mix full-motion and rendered video. We have no idea what the game involves yet, so we can only hope that EA has restored some of the buck-wild madness that was missing from Need for Speed: ProStreet. We do know, however, that not only have police chases returned, but the boys in blue appear to be driving... R34 Nissan GT-Rs. So if as the sultry voiceover in the trailers says, "This is all going to come crashing down," it looks like you'll have a whole lot of fun making rubble. Follow the jump for the video, and check out the Need for Speed site for a couple more. Thanks for the tip, catgirlshyla!

[Source: EA]
Continue reading Coming to a console near you: Need for Speed: Undercover

Coming to a console near you: Need for Speed: Undercover originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 19:28:00 EST. Could the fourth installment of The Fast and the Furious be... as good (we use that word loosely) as the first movie? Perhaps even good enough to make us forget the installments that followed, both of which tried to shoot poison darts through our eyes and into our brains? Too early to make predictions, but for now we can certainly enjoy the trailer, which is high on action and light on dialogue -- just like we like our action films. And unlike some other action trailers, the stunts will get your blood going but don't require you to believe that Jason Statham should be shooting laser beams out of his eyes. Follow the jump for the video and The Return of the Vin. Thanks for the tip, Brodiemash!

Gallery: Fast and Furious 4

[Source: DumbDrum]
Continue reading VIDEO: Fast and Furious 4 trailer debuts

VIDEO: Fast and Furious 4 trailer debuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 08:27:00 EST. It was accompanied by a Jaguar XJ mule and shepherded by a fleet of Land Rovers charged with blocking the all-seeing eye of someone's Sony Handycam. Fortunately for us, they failed. The driver of this particular prototype XF-R couldn't keep his foot off the throttle, as at different points in the video you hear the growl of a big displacement V8 and the accompanying scream of a supercharger. Other than vents in the hood to let that 5-liter V8 breathe, the body modifications look to be exceptionally tame. With 500 horsepower, however, its acceleration should be quite the opposite. Follow the jump to check out the video.

[Source: YouTube via Carscoop]
Continue reading Spy Video: Jaguar XF-R caught on tape

Spy Video: Jaguar XF-R caught on tape originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Aug 2008 18:01:00 EST.
