As much as we love games like Forza and Gran Turismo, these driving simulators are hobbled by one glaring omission: peripheral vision. Driving requires a view from more than just the windshield, and while Forza 4 and Gran Turismo 5 have made steps toward giving players a better a better look at the track around them, the nature of a flat screen is cursed with limitations. Of course, if you have the cash, Motion Simulation has a solution for you. The company's new TL1 simulator was built in cooperation with none other than the minds at Ariel. You know, the folks responsible for the mighty Atom.

The system uses three high-definition projectors to give the view a complete view of the virtual track ahead. What's more, the simulator is compatible with consoles like the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Unfortunately, the kit is prohibitively large and expensive. If you want one, you'll have to fork over $18,600 at current conversion rates, along with a big portion of your living room. Considering that kind of cash will buy you a very nice used sports car, we'll have to take a pass on this one.

Unfortunately, there isn't a video of the actual Atom simulator available just yet, so for the moment, you'll have to content yourself with footage of the company's great-sounding Touring Car simulator. Check it out by scrolling below.
Continue reading Ariel Atom simulator is ready to dominate your living room [w/video]

Ariel Atom simulator is ready to dominate your living room [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 May 2012 14:31:00 EST.
The classic video game Frogger is 30 years old, and some fans of the game think it deserves a place in the Smithsonian American Art Museum's The Art of Video Games exhibition. Frogger's age means that the public may have forgotten about the road-crossing amphibian, so Tyler DeAngelo, Renee Lee, and Ranjit Bhatnagar have pulled gameplay into the 21st century with a more immersive experience by tracking traffic along Manhattan's Fifth Avenue and using that data to generate the vehicles Frogger must dodge.

Passersby can try their luck avoiding the many taxicabs at the arcade cabinet the creators have parked on the sidewalk as a way to increase awareness of Frogger and boost their campaign to get the game into the Smithsonian. Rest assured, when real-life traffic makes the game all but impossible to play, there's a "classic" mode that still allows players to completely escape reality, just like the good old days. Check out the video by scrolling down, and if you like what you see, you can lend your support here.
Continue reading Fifth Avenue Frogger uses real NYC traffic in classic video game action

Fifth Avenue Frogger uses real NYC traffic in classic video game action originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 15:13:00 EST.
There are lots of automotive video games, from realistic racing games like Gran Turismo and Forza to fun driving games like Mario Kart to social games like Disc Drivin' for iOS. But there is only one Grand Theft Auto.

No other video game brings the dark humor inherent in mayhem like the GTA franchise, and it looks like a new installment will be here in a scant six months. According to a report on Joystiq, a Linked In resume for an animator and employee at game developer Rockstar was spotted listing Grand Theft Auto V with a shipping date of October 2012. Since then, the resume has been removed from the site and Rockstar is not commenting, according to the report.

Of course, the video game industry is as notorious for slipping shipping dates as it is for rumor mongering, so while you might want to place your preorder on Amazon, don't be surprised if you're still waiting come Christmas. Joystiq is skeptical about an October shipping date, pointing out that Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has already announced BioShock Infinite for an October launch, which would put the two titles in unnecessary competition.

Until then, we still have the GTA V trailer, which you can see if you scroll down.
Continue reading Rockstar animator's resume suggests Grand Theft Auto 5 coming in October [w/video]

Rockstar animator's resume suggests Grand Theft Auto 5 coming in October [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 17:29:00 EST.
The ladies and gentlemen at Turn 10, the studio behind Forza Motorsport 4, take their cars just as seriously as their gaming. They're not the only gamers to invest heaps of time rendering metal into pixels, but you might be surprised just how much travel, how many microphones, how long on the dyno and what kinds of owners go into gathering the selection of rides.

If you've wondered what goes into taking a Bugatti Veyron, or even a Honda Civic Si, from the parking lot to the game's custom Bernese Alps track, then there's a video just for you after the jump.
Continue reading How Forza Motorsport 4 gets its cars

How Forza Motorsport 4 gets its cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 18:59:00 EST.
Gamers, Turn 10 Studios is about to have you say goodbye to your family and friends. Forza Motorsport 4 is nearly available for purchase, and the creative team has let slip a few goodies that will be included with the game. We've already heard about the involvement of Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson, and how the developers turn a real track into a virtual one. Today, however, we've learned that there's a whole lot more in store for us.

The game hits stores on October 11th, but XBox Live Gold members can grab a demo version starting on October 3rd. Everyone else needs to wait until the 7th for their shot at the demo. When the full version of the game hits a few days later, fresh downloadable content will be available.

Now, DLC will be offered throughout the game's life cycle. To make sure you have access to it as it becomes available, Forza 4 offers a season pass. Paying $29.99 ensures that you get access to all six of the soon-to-be-released content packs. Buying in bulk also saves you 30 percent over buying each pack individually. This plan also provides you with a bonus American Muscle car pack. It adds the 1965 Pontiac GTO, 1968 Pontiac Firebird, 1970 Buick GSX, 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee, 1966 Chevrolet Nova SS, 1969 Shelby GT500 428CJ, 1971 Plymouth GTX 426 Hemi, 1967 Dodge Coronet W023, 1968 Dodge Dart HEMI Super Stock and 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt to your list of playable vehicles.

Turn 10 has gone to great lengths to include famous race tracks from around the world, and has announced that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the latest to be added to the game. Click past the jump for the full skinny from Turn 10.

There were going to be 35 Porsches in Forza Motorsport 4, but now there will be precisely zero. Kind of. In the video game world, some developers own the rights to a brand, and Electronic Arts owns the rights to have Porsche appear in any other game. When the Stuttgart brand appears in a non-EA game, it's because the other developer paid EA a licensing fee. That's what Turn 10 did with the previous Forza games and expected to do with FM4.

EA has other ideas, informing Turn 10 that it won't allow the rival developer to license any Porsches. That takes almost three dozen Stuttgart runners out of the controllers of enthusiasts around the world when FM4 launches in October. It has been suggested that EA is building a fence around its Shift and Need for Speed franchises.

The smackdown does not apply to RUFs, however, so there will be three fettled models that originated in Stuttgart and were finished in Pfaffenhausen. The other 35 cars will be replaced by various makes and models.
Forza Motorsport 4 wants to include Porsche models, EA says "Nein!" originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 08:28:00 EST.
Attention Formula One fans, your work day is officially ruined. Well, it will be come the first quarter of 2012. That's when Codemasters plans on releasing a new browser-based F1 game. Top teams, tracks and cars will be available on the same machine that you normally use to read Autoblog.com when you should be updating the TPS reports.

F1 Online: The Game will allow you to race for McLaren at Silverstone or Lotus at Monaco. Feeling more adventurous? You can create your own team and manage all aspects of it. That means running the research, marketing and team functions of your very own F1 entity. Excited? We haven't even told you the best part yet - the game is free. Hear that noise? It's the sound of IT departments battening down their firewall hatches across the country.

If you can hardly contain your excitement, you can sign up on the game's website for updates on its launch.
Codemasters announces free-to-play, browser-based F1 Online: The Game originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 10:58:00 EST.
We don't know when tilt-shift video will be old and busted, but it isn't today. Ken Block's recent busting-through-boxes DiRT 3 Gymkhana at the Battersea power station rocked hard enough in full scale. It looks even cooler - or perhaps it's just wackier and funnier - shot with a tilt-shift lens so that it looks like a tiny Ken Block is piloting a tiny Escort knocking over tiny boxes. The only thing stranger than the images is the music, which kept us wondering when the Harajuku girls were going to appear. They don't, but the still-awesome Harajuku-free video is after the jump.
Continue reading Ken Block Gymkhana, tilt-shift edition

Ken Block Gymkhana, tilt-shift edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Jun 2011 20:02:00 EST. Codemasters has revealed that it will also unveil the game for two portable systems: the Sony NGP and Nintendo 3DS.

That latter revelation means tri-dimensional open-wheel action with all of this year's teams, drivers and tracks. Though we've yet to witness the results ourselves, you can color us intrigued.

The studio hasn't yet announced a date for the portable releases, but we should know more when E3 hits Los Angeles in two weeks time. In the meantime, feel free to have a look at our past coverage of the video game franchise.
F1 2011 game entering third dimension on Nintendo 3DS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 07:58:00 EST. Need For Speed: The Run Debut Trailer - Click above to watch the video after the jump

If you're getting bored of the racing games that are relegated to the track, the Need For Speed franchise is hoping to grab your attention with The Run. The new game, which doesn't hit stores until November 15, promises to mix hot rides with a healthy dose of drama. The premise is simple: The gamer will need to make their way across the country while bad guys and the law chases them all the while. In other words, its kind of like Smokey and the Bandit meets Fast and Furious, perhaps with a touch of Grand Theft Auto.

Hit the jump to watch the first trailer for the upcoming game. The clip is short and it doesn't reveal much, but we did catch a glimpse of an Audi R8, a Porsche Cayenne, a Mustang and even a Ford Taurus Police Interceptor. That's not a lot to go on, but the post-jump press release says gamers will "blow across borders, weave through dense urban traffic, rocket down icy mountain passes and navigate narrow canyons at breakneck speeds." Sounds like it could be fun.

Get excited, kids. The Driver franchise is back with a new chapter, and this time the story takes the damage to San Francisco. Our good friends over at Joystiq got to spend a little time behind the controller of the game ahead of its launch. The storyline picks up after the conclusion of Driv3r, which means we're done playing around in the late '70s. Ubisoft Reflections has gone through the trouble of rendering a fair portion of down town, Marin County, East Bay and Treasure Island for our tormenting pleasure, though according to Joystiq, that's not the most interesting part of the gameplay.

Early in the action, our hero Tanner winds up in a coma and spends the rest of the story line haunting San Francisco and possessing random drivers to track down the infamous Jericho. Apparently players can snap up any vehicle they see simply by lining up a reticle and pressing a button. It sounds a little shaky to us, but that doesn't mean we won't light a few hours of our life on fire by flopping down on the couch with Driver: San Fracisco when it lands this August. Hit the jump for a video.

The third installment in the DiRT video game franchise, DiRT 3, hits stores on May 24, 2011. It will cost you $59.99 for a copy, which is steep, but completely in-line with the pricing for today's video games. If you have a few extra coins hiding under the couch cushions, however, then GameStop has a tantalizing product bundle for you. Spend $299 to reserve a copy of DiRT 3, and you will also get the Traxxas Ken Block R/C Ford Fiesta.

If you were already considering buying the radio-controlled gymkhana machine, then this is a great deal, because it essentially throws the game in for free. If, like us, you were thinking of buying the Codemasters game, and you currently have R/C cars on the brain, this deal means you have to explain to your wife why the American Express bill shows a GameStop purchase for nearly five times the previously discussed amount.

Click past the jump to see why sleeping on the couch will be worth it come May 24. Thanks to all for the tips!

The release of DiRT 3 is nigh upon us and, as a final teaser, game maker Codemasters has revealed an intriguing three-game party mode. The party mode consists of mini games and will serve as an escape for those who get tired of sliding Ken Block's WRC Ford Fiesta around gravel-strewn corners at breakneck speed. It also means there will be a welcome multiplayer mode to an already awesome racing title.

Party mode's three mini games all sound like an excellent way to avoid homework, housework, taxes, lawn mowing or emotional interaction with other human beings. The first, called Invasion, has players driving around an open parking lot attempting to destroy cardboard robots while avoiding skyscrapers, which could turn out to also be robots.

The second game is Outbreak, where a glowing-green "infected" player tries to spread his car's disease by crashing into opponents. Last man standing without the verdant infection leaves the game victorious.

The last game is Transporter, where players careen around in search of spontaneously-appearing flags. Once you claim a flag, you have to return it to your home base without being mugged by another player.

Essentially, party mode combines a Mario Party-style multiplayer mode with a straightforward rally-racing game. The marketability of that seems more than plausible, and the prospect of breaking up racing with some good, old-fashioned playground games sounds like a winner to us.

For pure, unadulterated rally action from the comfort of your living room, there's nothing quite like DiRT. The video game franchise from Codemasters is about as realistic as they come, and now they've got their third installment coming in the form of DiRT 3.

Not only is the game promised to be more accurate in its execution and feel, but it incorporates a whole new slew of features. There are more cars and more stages, of course, but that's hardly the end of it: DiRT 3 also incorporates two new kinds of rally action - Gymkhana and hillclimb. The former, of course, was popularized by Ken Block who's now crossed over to professional rally competition, while the latter brings events like Pikes Peak into the fold to really get that dirt kicking. But don't take our word for it, follow the jump to watch the video preview from G4, including an interview with the studio's lead game developer and gameplay footage from what is shaping up as the new benchmark in rally action.

Fact: Playing video games can help speed up reaction times and make a person more sensitive to the environment around them. A study by researchers at the University of Rochester found that people who play video games are generally better at multi-tasking, reading small print and even driving.

On the flip side of this study is one put together by Continental Tires, which shows that gamers also tend to take more risks behind the wheel. On average, 22 percent of gaming drivers reported being stopped by the police, compared to 13 percent on non-gamers. 31 percent of gamers have run a red light in the last 12 months while just 14 percent of non-gamers make the same claim.

Even more glaring is that 45 percent of the gaming drivers polled said they suffer from road rage while only 22 percent of the non-video game playing respondents stated the same. Honestly, judging from the typical morning commute in some major cities (and from the image above, which was captured while playing Gran Turismo 5), we bet both of those figures are just a wee bit on the low side.

The third installment in the DiRT video game series is beginning to tantalize us with more teasers. This time around, the Codemasters team put together a clip showing off the game's Gymkhana mode. It's essentially a virtual version of Ken Block ruining the tires on his Ford Fiesta in typically spectacular fashion.

The video shows the Fiesta running through a Gymkhana course called the DC Compound. It features donut sections, obstacles to slide around or under and even a jump to take the hoonage to the skies. The game is scheduled to come out sometime in 2011 and will be available for the Xbox, PS3 and PC systems.

For now, all we can do is watch and wait - so grab the e-brake and slide across the jump.

Race-Star ConverTTable is our kind of furniture - Click above to watch video after the jump

A driving wheel sounds like a nice addition for any racing video game, but in reality it might not work as well as you hope. You have to find a place to mount the wheel and a make sure your pedals aren't sliding around the floor. It's not that much of a hassle, but a dedicated space for both wheel and pedals would be nice... throw in a racing seat and the virtual-racing ante has officially been upped.

But where would you store something like that and how do you craft it so as not to be a total eye-sore? Austrian company Race-Star has the answer and it comes in the form of the ConverTTable.

What appears to be a fairly basic box table actually hides a special gaming secret. The ConverTTable unfolds to reveal a driving wheel, adjustable pedals and a track mounted racing bucket. You can slide it in front of your TV and the Nürburgring on Gran Turismo 5 goes from a controller-hucking experience to a carousel-shredding event. When it's time to shut down the fun, simply fold the table back up and it turns right back into drink-holding furniture.

The price for a Race-Star ConverTTable setup is listed at €4,999, which translates to about $6,605 USD. That is a lot of coin for something you might be able to engineer in your garage. Can you produce the same level of fit-and-finish as Race-Star has achieved? Probably not, unless you are used to working with high-quality plastics. Regardless of the price, the Race-Star ConverTTable has earned its place on our Autoblog Holiday Wish List.

Hop the jump to see it in action.

Electronic Arts isn't pulling any punches in the run-up to the release of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. The studio sent two of the world's most lust-worthy Italilan exotics to go frolic through the countryside in a live-action interpretation of the game's premise. The video stars one wayward Pagani Zonda Cinque on the run from a very stubborn Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 and its accompanying air support. The whole tale is set to La Roux's "Not Your Toy" remixed by the ever crafty Nero. It's as fitting a soundtrack as we could imagine.

The video is, of course, dripping with high-horsepower slides and vaporized rear tires at the hands of legendary stunt drivers Marc Hennerici and Marc Basseng. Sound appetizing? Hit the jump to sink your teeth into the jaw-dropping spot.

Somewhere out there on a secluded hog farm, an adorable baby piglet was just born with butterfly wings. A rash of new Gran Turismo 5 gameplay videos have made their way to the information super highway, including a full clip of the racing simulator's seven-minute introduction video. Make sure you've got plenty of break time saved up before diving into that particular gem.

The other clips focus on racing in the rain around Eiger Nordwand and darting through Tsukaba Circuit. It's difficult to tell just how much the graphics have improved over what we've seen of the game in the past thanks to the shaky-hand-cam-on-TV-screen action in each of the videos, but hey, we'll take what we can get.

Knowing that there are some lucky jokers out there playing the game right now almost takes the sting out of the fact that we were supposed to have GT5 in our hands at the beginning of this month. Almost. Hit the jump to check out the action for yourself.
