Lamborghini offers Versace edition LP640 Roadster

Lamborghini has teamed up with Versace yet again to offer a special edition of the Murcielago LP640. If you're thinking this isn't a first, you're thinking right: Back in 2006, the two Italian houses of striking style teamed up to offer a small run of 10 LP640 coupes, and then produced an additional black roadster for a charity fundraiser. But now Lamborghini is offering the Versace edition LP640 Roadster to the public at large – that is, those who have the big bucks to cough up for one.

As could be expected, the Versace edition is more about style than substance. The bright white exterior is plastered with Versace's Greek motif, while the interior gets special full-grain, hand-embroidered, ultra-soft, white nappa leather on the seats, dashboard and center console. The Versace edition also gets a transparent engine cover that showcases the V12 for the first time. The special edition, unveiled yesterday at Versace's Via Gesu 12 in Milan during Men's Fashion Week, was accompanied by a new range of Lamborghini Versace merchandise, including leather luggage, gloves, driving shoes and an assortment of other accessories.

Check out the press release after the jump and the images in the gallery below to take in all the little touches that sets the Versace edition LP640 Roadster apart.

PowerAIDS: unique Lambo Versace Roadster raises $500k

It's only cool when Lamborghini does it. Other carmakers can try, but it's only cool when Lamborghini does it. It may amount to chopping off the roof, cranking up the engine or simply slapping some decals on the side, but when the Raging Bull rolls out a special edition, it's show-stopping.

When Lamborghini teamed up with Versace to produce a special edition Murcielago LP640, they only built ten of the ultra-exclusive fashion accessory to beat all other fashion accessories. But now they've topped it with a one-off open-air version. Based on the new LP640 Roadster, Lamborghini painted this one black (the ten hard-tops were white) for Versace, who auctioned it off at a star-studded event in Beverly Hills to honor the late founder Gianni Versace. The one-of-a-kind Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Versace Roadster raised $500,000 for the Elton John AIDS foundation.

Fashion on Wheels

The Paris show was the perfect venue for Lamborghini to take the wraps off the stunning special-edition Murcielago created together with famous Italian design house Versace. But that wasn't the first such crossover between the worlds of wheels and fashion. Men.Style.com, the online portal of eminent style mags GQ and Details has put together a portfolio of some of history's most memorable "designer automobiles". Most of them feature special interiors accompanied by the appropriate badging on the outside to let everyone know you're riding in super-style.

Included on the list are several efforts from now-defunct AMC: a 1972 Javelin by Pierre Cardin, a '73 Gremlin by Levi's, and a '74 Matador Coupe by Oleg Cassini. Cadillac and Gucci also put together a very special (and very pimpin') Seville in '79. Alfred Dunhill and Aston Martin made a perfect match on the 1998 DB7, of which only 150 bespoke editions were made. The 2000 Joseph Abboud edition of the Buick Regal, meanwhile, was a less inspiring example. Armani's collaboration with Mercedes on the 2003 CLK convertible seems more on-target. And lastly, Men.Style.com closed with the Versace Lambo.

There are a few more examples we could think of that were left off the list. In the 90's especially Ford was turning out Eddie Bauer editions of the Explorer and other SUVs. Sister-company Mercury also teamed up with Nautica for a yellow-pinstriped navy-and-white Villager minivan. Lexus had a partnership with premium leather-goods brand Coach that turned out a range of special-edition ES, RX and LS models.

Can think of more? We invite you to add to the list in the comments section.
