This may sound strange, but bear with us - there is indeed a point to this little exercise. Okay, ready? We'd like you to close your eyes and imagine a crossover. Any modern crossover is fine.

Done? Good. Recall what you saw in your mind's eye. What did it look like? Did it have a somewhat aggressive shape - an upright greenhouse, pronounced wheel wells with some type of body cladding, a bold grille up front bracketed by large headlamps and hulking bodysides with a bit of visual flair provided by creases or rising shoulder lines? Did it sit jacked up a tad on oversized alloy wheels, distancing itself from any thoughts of mere station wagons? Yep, that was a crossover all right.

Point being, there isn't all that much to differentiate today's crop of car-based utility vehicles, at least when it comes to visuals and overall impressions, which means, to use a somewhat tired phrase, the devil is in the details. Clearly, what makes a family choose one over another has a lot to do with their individual wants and needs, and each automaker is building a vehicle (or two, or three) designed to appeal to these masses, but with ever-so-slightly differing formulas.

It was with all these thoughts swirling through our minds that we accepted an invitation to drive the new three-row 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe in San Diego, California for a full day of highways, twisty roads and ocean breezes. We were rewarded mostly with confirmation of our preconceived notions, but also with a few genuinely surprising details designed to attract the eyes and wallets of buyers all across North America.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Mar 2013 11:57:00 EST.
It happens every year. We bid adieu to some cars and trucks that will be missed, and say good riddance to others wondering how they stayed around so long. Whether they're being killed off for slow sales or due to a new product coming along to replace them, the list of vehicles being discontinued after 2012 is surprisingly long and diverse.

CNN Money has compiled a list of departing vehicles, to which we've added a few more of our own. In the slow sales column, cars like the Lexus HS 250h, Mercedes-Benz R-Class and the full Maybach lineup appear, while the Ford Escape Hybrid, Mazda CX-7 and Hyundai Veracruz are all having their gaps filled with more modern and more fuel-efficient alternatives. Obvious exceptions to the rule include models that still sell in decent numbers like the Jeep Liberty and the Chrysler Town & Country (which will eventually be replaced by a crossover-like vehicle).

According to a report in Ward's Auto, the pale fortunes of the soon-to-depart Hyundai Veracruz aren't stopping Hyundai from considering another dedicated seven-seat crossover. Although the new Santa Fe will usher in a long-wheelbased sibling that can seat seven, Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik advises Ward's to "stay tuned for future details on a potential premium crossover" that could be a dedicated - read: Veracruz replacing - CUV for seven.

The question is, what does "premium" mean? The word was applied to the Veracruz but customers didn't exactly buy it, cross-shopping the Veracruz with mass-market competitors. Ward's uses a barn-sized brush to lay out the competitive set for this future CUV, from the $18,995 Dodge Journey(!) to the $46,250 Audi Q7. That's a boggling range, the prime takeaway being that whatever it is will be obviously more "premium" than the Veracruz. According to Ward's, "Hyundai has expressed a desire to use the rear-wheel drive platform underpinning its premium Genesis and Equus sedans for other models, possibly CUVs."

Just as important for the moment is that Hyundai believes there's a fight it can still win in the arena of large crossovers.
Hyundai pondering new large crossover? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 14:31:00 EST.
Truth be told, every 2012 Hyundai model save for the Elantra Touring already had a brake override system fitted. So why the announcement, and why now? Well, other than just tweaking Toyota, whose unintended acceleration problems led to widespread recalls, a Congressional investigation, and prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to propose requiring brake override systems on all new cars, the announcement likely has more to do with the end of Elantra Touring production than it does with anything else.

The old Hyundai i30, on which the Elantra Touring was based, has been redesigned, and reviews of the new model have already started showing up on foreign automotive websites. We won't get our version of the i30, dubbed Elantra GT here in the U.S., until later in the summer.

We'll be driving the GT in June and we promise to issue a full report, though we're going to try to avoid testing this new technology.
Continue reading Hyundai announces standard brake-override for all models

Hyundai announces standard brake-override for all models originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 05 May 2012 15:03:00 EST.
Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik confirmed Wednesday that the all-new seven passenger 2013 Santa Fe will replace the Veracruz model. "The Veracruz is going away," Krafcik told Autoblog. "It ends production around November." Hyundai debuted the Santa Fe Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show in both five-passenger and seven-passenger configurations.

The seven-passenger Veracruz was a new nameplate for Hyundai when it rolled out in 2007. It never gained much acceptance in the U.S., so Hyundai has found a new way around that problem.

"It's hard to establish a new brand name," Krafcik said. "It can take $50 to $100 million dollars. Santa Fe is a golden nameplate for us, it's a great product, and now it will be much more efficient in my marketing spend."

Indeed. It will also be more efficient producing a five- and seven-passenger Santa Fe than two different vehicles. From the B-pillar forward, there will only be minor differences between the two Santa Fe models.

Furthermore, the new design of the Santa Fe moves it into Hyundai's stylized fluidic design theme, something that has been very successful with the compact Elantra and midsize Sonata. The Veracruz, which still included many of Hyundai's older design elements, just didn't fit in with everything else. Now, or at least in the coming months, it will be no more.
Hyundai Veracruz to end production "around November," replaced by Santa Fe originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 19:31:00 EST.
You might think that Hyundai has pulled a fast one at today's New York Auto Show by unveiling two different of its 2013 Santa Fe, one a two-row Sport model and the other a three-row family-minded model simply called Santa Fe. In reality, however, we've been expecting this since we first told you about the Korean automaker's new strategy back in mid-2010.

The Santa Fe Sport seen above will offer buyers seating for five as well as two four-cylinder options. The base model comes equipped with a direct-injection 2.4-liter four-pot good for 190 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder good for an estimated 264 ponies will also be offered. Both will be offered paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, and either engine can be had with all-wheel drive. The latter comes with torque-vectoring cornering control, a bit of tech that Hyundai hopes will set the Santa Fe Sport apart from other affordable crossovers. More impressively, the automaker says it has managed to clip a whopping 266 pounds from the Santa Fe compared to the 2012 model.

Buyers who need a bit extra space may want to step up to the seven-passenger Santa Fe. The three-row model adds around four inches of additional wheelbase and a more powerful 3.3-liter direct-injection V6 with 290 horsepower. The additional inches allow for around 38.6 additional cubic feet of passenger volume compared to the Santa Fe Sport, and the long-wheelbase model should fill in for the ill-embraced Veracruz which is likely in its last model year. Hit the jump for the complete press release.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe goes on big diet, unveils five and seven-passenger models

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe goes on big diet, unveils five and seven-passenger models originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 14:25:00 EST.
Hyundai has been hitting on all cylinders of late, adding the Elantra Coupe and Hatchback, the Veloster Turbo and the upcoming Azera. That's a lot of new metal for one calendar year, and it appears the Korean automaker is just getting warmed up.

Fox News reports that Hyundai USA CEO John Krafcik hinted to a new entry into the six- and seven-passenger crossover segment. The affable exec pointed out that Hyundai needed to do a better job of attracting families to the brand, adding "it's probably fair to say we need more presence in the six and seven passenger crossover segment where we have the Veracruz now."

Hyundai is also expected to unveil a new Santa Fe at the New York Auto Show, so the automaker's CUV offerings are definitely looking up. As we reported back way back in June of 2010, we expect Hyundai to eventually offer a long-wheelbase three-row version of the new Santa Fe to replace the slow-selling Veracruz, though the automaker has yet to confirm this development.

But while Krafcik hints that some new CUV metal is coming, fans of the Italic H shouldn't hold their breath in anticipation of a pickup truck. Krafcik reportedly told Fox News that the automaker could build a truck if it wanted to, but the brand will instead focus on more efficient vehicles.
CEO Krafcik says to expect more family vehicles from Hyundai, not trucks originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 10:28:00 EST.
Motor Trend reports Hyundai has confirmed that its next-generation Santa Fe will bow at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The third-generation Santa Fe is expected to hit dealer lots by the end of the year as a 2013 model. Hyundai hasn't disclosed exactly what we can expect from the vehicle when it arrives, though spy shots suggest a vehicle more in-line with the automaker's current design language. MT believes the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe will continue on with the same powertrain options found in the current vehicle, which means buyers can look forward to a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Hyundai may squeeze a bit more performance or fuel efficiency out of those engines, however. Some reports have also suggested the 2013 Santa Fe may bow with a new turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood as well. That engine is currently found in the likes of the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T where it produces 274 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, our intelligence still suggests that Hyundai will eventually market a stretched three-row variant of the Santa Fe as the de-facto replacement for the slow-selling Veracruz, but it isn't clear whether that vehicle (or strategy) will be disclosed in New York.
Next-Gen Hyundai Santa Fe will debut in Big Apple originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 11:01:00 EST.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of over 200,000 Hyundai crossovers - specifically, 178,685 Santa Fe and 26,548 Veracruz crossovers - all from the 2007 and 2008 model years. The problem? Airbags that may not deploy in the event of an accident.

According to NHTSA, the clock spring contact assembly for the driver's airbag may become damaged over time. NHTSA continues:

The driver's airbag electrical circuit will experience a high resistance condition, potentially causing the driver's airbag to not deploy.

Hyundai dealers will inspect and replace the faulty clock springs as necessary, with no cost to owners. The official recall is set to kick off later this month. Follow the jump for NHTSA's full statement.
Hyundai recalling over 200,000 Santa Fe and Veracruz crossovers originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Sep 2011 18:30:00 EST. Hyundai is on a mission to expand its American market share. And so far, the going's been good for the Korean automaker, which has been taking the fight to its Japanese rivals with increasing ferocity. Now reports indicate that Hyundai-Kia is looking into building a third assembly plant in North America. Only it probably won't be in the United States - like its existing plant in Alabama and the one being built in Georgia - and it won't be in Canada either; sources say the third plant is likely to end up in Mexico.

The reports are apparently substantiated by the Mexican government, which is understandably keen to encourage foreign investment. If and when it goes online - it's targeted for 2013 - the plant could be capable of churning out 150,000 vehicles annually, helping Hyundai quadruple its North American output by 2013. The plant could be used to produce the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio for North American consumption, but not the Veracruz crossover - which may prove a little confusing, considering that the location Hyundai's looking at is in Veracruz, Mexico.

UPDATE: Hyundai has released the following statement regarding a possible third plant in NA.

"The recent report of Hyundai Motor Co. planning an investment in a Mexican manufacturing subsidiary is completely groundless. Neither HMC nor its affiliates in the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group have any plans to invest in manufacturing operations in Mexico at this time."

Hyundai is piling on additional incentives to boost its Assurance program as the industry heads into the dog days of summer. The newest promotion, Gas Lock, fixes the price of regular unleaded at $1.49 per gallon for the next year. The program runs July 1 through August 31, and eligible vehicles include the Accent, Sonata, Tiburon, Elantra, Elantra Touring, Entourage, Azera, Santa Fe, Tucson and Veracruz. Customers choosing to utilize Gas Lock will forgo $1,000 in available rebates, making the incentive a gamble that gas prices will remain high.

Hyundai Assurance struck at cord with the American public when it offered payment protection in the event of job loss. Now Hyundai is looking to give consumers increased peace of mind over of the volatility of gas prices, which have swung from under $2 a gallon a few months ago to nearly $3 at the beginning of summer.

John Krafcik, CEO and president of Hyundai Motor America, says the company's research shows that "nearly 40% of potential new car buyers are staying out of the market specifically due to uncertainty around future gas prices."

You may remember that last year, Chrysler tried a similar promotion, offering the opportunity to lock in gas at $2.99 per gallon when a gallon of petrol was at an all-time high of about $4.50. The move didn't appear to be very successful for the Pentastar, as most opted to instead take the upfront cash on the hood. Hit the jump to pour over the particulars of Hyundai's Gas Lock promotion, watch the two commercials, and let us know in the comments section if you feel customers would be better off taking the $1,000 or one year of $1.49 gasoline.

[Source: Hyundai | Image: Justin Sullivan/Getty]
Continue reading New Hyundai Assurance provision locks gas at $1.49/gal for one year [w/VIDEO]

New Hyundai Assurance provision locks gas at $1.49/gal for one year [w/VIDEO] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 11:28:00 EST. The CUV started the luxury crossover craze, but a recent comparison test by Motor Trend concluded that the Hyundai Veracruz was perhaps the better all-around crossover. Lexus fully intends to protect its lucrative turf, so a larger, all-new RX is on the horizon, likely based on the same platform as the new Toyota Highlander. Spy photos from the Lehmann clan show an elongated test mule with a noticeable extension at the rear side window. This means that Lexus is keeping up with the competition by adding the ability to house seven occupants, just like with the Highlander. A third row of seats could make the RX an even more popular vehicle, but Lexus designers will have to be careful not to ruin the trademark design that's made the RX so successful in the first place. We expect to see the new RX unveiled at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, and we'll bring you all the shots from the show floor when it happens.

[Source: Auto Express]
7-seat Lexus RX on its way originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Aug 2007 13:53:00 EST. Which, we would all agree, is a good thing.

This shouldn't be a big surprise, though, since the NHTSA found pretty much the same thing when they tested the Veracruz, awarding the SUV five-stars after its frontal crash test for both passenger and driver.

In fact, the Veracruz has done pretty well in most safety checks, with a low rollover danger and another full set of NHTSA stars in the side impact event. Its only weak spot so far seems to have been found in the IIHS rear-crash test, where it scored acceptable, one below good. IIHS hasn't put this Hyundai through a side impact test yet, but as we already said, NHTSA gave two thumbs up.

You can read our first opinions of the SUV here.

[Source: IIHS]
Hyundai Veracruz gets the full-frontal treatment from IIHS originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2007 15:31:00 EST. The 2007 Santa Fe has just gone from the dubious rating of "poor" to a trifecta of "good" in front, side, and rear collisions by the IIHS. The '07 Santa Fe owes its dramatic and positive swing in the IIHS ratings to standard Stability Control and several improvements to the seats and head rest. The IIHS "good" trophy will look terrific on Hyundai's mantel alongside the Santa Fe's five-star NHTSA rating for front and side impact.

This is more good news for Hyundai that's on a bit of a roll. The Veracruz just beat out the Lexus RX350 in a Motor Trend comparison, RWD luxury vehicles with V8 engines will soon be in the lineup, and quality scores have improved dramatically. That's said to change, when Hyundai overcomes those hurdles and releases their three-liter V6 diesel in the U.S. in either 2009 or 2010.

The S-engine will be made available initially in the Veracruz, according to Hyundai's CEO, Dong Jim Kim. "We think this is a very good engine. With a little more effort we can meet the U.S. requirements," said Kim during an interview with Automotive News.

The Hyundai-developed V6 utilizes an electronically controlled turbo that increases performance and fuel economy, and at the same time creates 240 HP.

At $27,000, the Veracruz is currently the most expensive model in Hyundai's lineup, so it's safe to assume that the diesel-equipped CUV will command a slight premium.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub. The Veracruz is aimed right at the heart of the increasingly popular mid-sized crossover segment that includes such perennial best sellers as the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander and new entries like the Saturn Outlook and Ford Edge. Hyundai identifies the Honda and Toyota entries as their main competitors, but interestingly neither was their primary benchmark. That honor falls to the Lexus RX350. More on that in a bit.

Hyundai invited a group of automotive media to a park in northern Oakland County north of Chrysler's headquarters for a first drive of the new Veracruz. We set out on a cool rainy morning in a fleet of new vehicles in various trim levels and front- and all-wheel drive configurations. We only had about an hour and a half to drive, so this was strictly a first impression.

A full review will be coming in the next few weeks but you can find Autoblog's preliminary look at the Veracruz after the jump.

Gallery: 2007 Hyundai Veracruz: First Drive

Continue reading Autoblog First Drive: 2007 Hyundai Veracruz

Autoblog First Drive: 2007 Hyundai Veracruz originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 13:47:00 EST. For just over 25 grand, you get Hyundai's grunty 3.8 liter V6, standard ESC and ABS, a nifty stereo system, and alloy rims to name but some of the standard bag of tricks. Going full boat for the Limited will raise the bottom line to just over $34k, but considering that the GLS has almost everything you'd want right from the get-go, we can only imagine the smorgasbord of stuff in the mid-range SE model and range-topping Limited.

These unibody midsizers are seemingly the neo-family-wagon, so this segment is generating lots of heat right now. The Veracruz is in the same sandbox as the Mazda CX-9, GM Lambda cousins, Toyota Highlander and the like, but Hyundai's press materials call out more expensive models like the Lexus RX and Mercedes GL. We know this move, as Hyundai pulls it time and time again. The Korean company packs a model with uplevel content and more standard safety and convenience features than its immediate competition can match. Thus, customers are more likely to compare it with more expensive models and marvel at its low, low price. Genius, just genius. We're eager to get one in the Autoblog Garage.

Seems like Korean carmaker Hyundai likes nothing more than chasing after its Japanese rivals Honda and Toyota, and to that effect have launched their latest assault on the Pilot and Highlander with the new Veracruz crossover utility vehicle. And they may be catching them.

The Veracruz presents an attractive design packed with features at a highly competitive price point. If you're a fan of the Nissan Murano, you should appreciate this Hyundai's styling. It's sleek and curvaceous like a sportscar, but taller and with more capabilities. Inside the interior features three rows of seating - increasingly considered a must for sport-ute and crossover buyers, especially with the so-called demise of the minivan. Interior fit and finish is light-years ahead of where the uninitiated would think a Korean family-hauler would be, packing perforated leather trim with contrasting stitching and brushed aluminum trim. It's packed with all the bells and whistles for convenience and safety, and Hyundai says it also features more cargo room than Mercedes' full-size GL. Pulling all those features around town is the same engine from the Azera sedan, an aluminum 3.8-liter DOHC CVVT 260-hp V6 driving all fours through a six-speed automatic with manual shifting.

Korean cars have been improving quickly, and while the styling is a love-it-or-hate-it affair, the Veracruz looks poised to take Hyundai yet another step in the right direction.

Yesterday a brochure leaked onto the web pretty much erased Hyundai's element of surprise, and now the video here shows us what the Veracruz looks like in motion as well as the interior.

It appears to be a commercial for the Korean version of the Veracruz, which we learn will come with a 3.0-liter V6 producing 240 horsepower. We're still hopeful the North American version will come with a version of the Azera's much more powerful 3.8-liter V6. Rumor has it that the Veracruz will be officially unveiled tomorrow, so perhaps after that we can stop pretending to be so excited about another CUV. Yay!

Hyundai has also erected a digital domain for the new Veracruz, a.k.a. a minisite, which can be found here, although it's more just fun with flash than substance at the moment.

[Source: YouTube via CarScoop]
Hyundai Veracruz official video surfaces originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Oct 2006 17:28:00 EST. The face we saw hiding under all that covering looks pretty much like we expected, though we're fast becoming of the mind that if you've seen one SUV-shaped CUV, you've seen them all. The Veracruz will benefit from a standard 3.8-liter V6 probably putting out at least 263 horsepower like in the Azera, though probably tuned a bit for more low end torque. The ute's also large enough for a Hideaway third-row seat, though don't expect to be too comfortable back there or have a decent view out thanks to those large D-pillars. All-wheel drive will also be standard, and since it is a Hyundai the Veracruz will come stocked with electronic stability control, side air bags, and side-curtain airbags for all three rows. Pricing will be important, as the Hyundai Veracruz will stack up well against the Lambda trio of large CUVs from General Motors in terms of content, but will likely be priced closer to the Ford Edge, which lacks a third-row of seating. Hyundai claims its going after the marketshare of vehicles like the Honda Pilot, Nissan Murano, Subaru B9 Tribeca and the Lexus RX350, which, as CarScoop point out, is evident in the vehicle's interior design.

More pics after the jump and at the link...

[Source: CarScoop]
Continue reading Hyundai Veracuz pics leak onto web

Hyundai Veracuz pics leak onto web originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Oct 2006 16:35:00 EST.
