I just couldn't bring myself to lead this post with the image you see on the right. The winter months have not been kind to our matte gray 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, and since you can't just run the thing through your local car wash, our oddly shaped little hatchback has spent more days dirty than clean. It breaks my fleet manager heart to see one of our test cars covered in schmutz so frequently, but let's be honest - the last thing anyone wants to do when it's 12 degrees Fahrenheit outside is play with a hose and spend a good amount of time hand-washing a car.

Moral of the story: If you live in a cold-weather state where you expect to get regular doses of the white stuff, matte paint probably isn't for you. Not to worry, though, as the Veloster Turbo is offered in plenty of pretty, car wash-friendly colors.

We'll have a lot more to talk about regarding the Veloster's cleanability in forthcoming updates, and we're even planning a trip to the Dr. Beasley's office - the company that created the special matte paint detailing kit for the Hyundai - to have their experts show us how it's done. For now, let's spend some time talking about what we've learned about the turbocharged hatch during its honeymoon phase here in the Autoblog Garage.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo: February 2013

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo: February 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Feb 2013 14:57:00 EST.
The Hyundai Veloster is indeed an automotive oddball, and that's part of the reason why we're so drawn to it. Even in base form, the Veloster is a cleverly packaged little wonder that's bursting with personality, and with the added grunt and visual aggression of the Turbo model, there's a lot to talk about.

Despite not really fitting into any one specific vehicle segment (unless you dump it into the all-too-vague "compact" class), the Veloster Turbo looks really good on paper, to say nothing of how it looks on the street. It's certainly a head-turner, and we're intrigued by the overall package of an oddly shaped three-door (or four-door?) with some forced induction motivation.

We've had a lot to say about the weird little Hyundai in the past, and we don't see the conversations about this car ending anytime soon. Thus, we've welcomed a matte gray example into the Autoblog long-term garage for one year of testing. This should definitely be interesting.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo: Introduction

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo: Introduction originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Jan 2013 11:57:00 EST.
The Hyundai Veloster Turbo is quite the nimble runabout. So much so that you may say it has "toy car" characteristics. Well Hyundai has taken that notion in a creative direction, creating a stop-motion race made of Legos. It is a between a Lego-ized Veloster, and a nondescript racer of the blocky persuasion.

The video is in celebration of the latest version of the iPhone and iPad driving game Asphalt 7: Heat. The game has been available on iTunes since June 21 of this year. As part of the promotion for this game, Hyundai is running a competition that began yesterday, and goes through Sunday, November 25. The winner of this competition will win a trip to Korea, to check out Hyundai's headquarters, as well as a trip to the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A Korean factory and Detroit in January? Sign us up!

As for the video promo, it makes for some pretty exciting racing, incorporating elements from the Asphalt 7 game, such as N2O and cash icons, not to mention a sweet jump. In all, its a pretty entertaining stop-motion Lego video. Asphalt 7 is the first in the series that is available for both iPhone and iPad, and this video really makes want to check it out!
Continue reading Hyundai Veloster Turbo goes Lego racing

Hyundai Veloster Turbo goes Lego racing originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 19:15:00 EST.
Hyundai has already released renderings of its Cosworth-tuned Genesis Coupe that will be on display at the 2012 SEMA Show, and with the show just a couple more weeks away, Hyundai is now teasing a souped-up Veloster headed to Las Vegas. The Hyundai Veloster Turbo Velocity concept was designed at Hyundai's America Technical Center in Irvine, CA to be a street car that is also trackable.

To start, Hyundai had the Veloster Turbo's stock engine sent off to Cosworth for new internal components, turbocharger, intercooler, intake manifold and engine controller, and it was finished off with a custom exhaust system. The result gives the Velocity concept more than 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet. To handle the track, Hyundai also upgraded the car's suspension and brakes.

SEMA concepts are known for their flashy, over-the-top designs, and the Velocity will not disappoint with its wide body kit, a massive rear wing and a white-painted roof that gives the car a custom chopped look. Intending to prove this concept is ready for the track, the Velocity also comes with a full roll bar, data acquisition hardware and racing harnesses.

We'll have live images of the Veloster Turbo Velocity concept for you in a couple weeks, but until then, Hyundai has included a press release and a quick video of its SEMA-bound concept that we've posted below.
Continue reading Hyundai creates 400-HP Veloster Turbo Velocity concept for SEMA [w/video]

Hyundai creates 400-HP Veloster Turbo Velocity concept for SEMA [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Oct 2012 17:58:00 EST.
The Hyundai Veloster became one of the most eye-catching cars on the market right out of the gate, but it lacked the oomph to match its unique and sporty styling. Hyundai remedied this situation for the Veloster's sophomore season by adding a little more power courtesy of some forced induction. Enter the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo.

Boasting a design that looks more like a custom SEMA-bound sport compact rather than a production sub-$30,000 hatchback, the new Veloster Turbo dives head first into the hot hatch segment with plenty of extra power and an even more aggressive design to match.

These changes should be enough to attract the enthusiast crowd, but after spending a week in Hyundai's new pocket rocket, we aim to see how the car stacks up as a daily driver.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo [w/video]

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 12:30:00 EST.
During an event in Park City, Utah today, Hyundai Motor America President and CEO John Krafcik confirmed to Autoblog that the funky Veloster hatchback will be getting a new summer tire option. "We could do better in terms of tires [and] we had always planned to have a summer option," Krafcik told us.

The higher-performance rubber - Michelin Pilot Super Sport 215/40ZR18 tires - offers substantial performance increases compared to the current car's Kumho Solus KH25 all-seasons. In skid pad lateral acceleration, Krafcik told us that the Michelins are good for 0.94 gs compared to 0.82 with the Kumhos. What's more, stopping distance from 60 miles per hour is now reduced to 121 feet (compared to 135) and wet braking from 60 mph happens in 136 feet (compared to 158).

Both the naturally aspirated and turbocharged Veloster models will be available with these grippier rollers (providing you spec the base car with the already optional 18-inch wheels). Hyundai will offer the Michelins as a $1,200 standalone option beginning this fall.
Hyundai Veloster getting summer tire option originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 18:31:00 EST.
Hyundai won't confirm it's plans to introduce an SR performance badge to Australia, but GoAuto.com.au says it's coming.

The Veloster SR Turbo is on its way and, now, there's speculation more performance-oriented cars could make their way Down Under. GoAuto says a performance version of i30 hatch could be announced as soon as October, when additional SR concept vehicles are shown.

Of course, all of this talk of souped-up front-wheel-drive small cars has us thinking selfishly thinking about U.S. comparos between an Elantra SR, a MazdaSpeed3, a Volkswagen GTI and Honda Civic Si.

However, Hyundai remains tight lipped on the possibility. When we contacted them, Hyundai wouldn't officially comment on anything, saying that there's already been speculation on an R-Spec version of the Veloster Turbo coming to America.

"You do know how we like to 'never say never' at Hyundai," one official said in an email. He was likely smiling when he said it.

Our guess is that Hyundai will continue to push select performance models in the future, whether they're called SR, RS, or R-Spec doesn't really matter.
Hyundai pondering creation of SR performance brand for Australia? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 08:28:00 EST.
Motor Authority has been apparently been exchanging whispers in the corner regarding the Veloster with someone from Hyundai, and has been told that there is "still left room in the lineup for a higher-performance variant" than the Veloster Turbo. The consensus in certain circles, including ours, is that the boosted version of the funky three-door is a healthy step above the base model but doesn't posses the true grit to joust with the segment's defining hot hatches.

Part of this could be considered intentional since, as we wrote in our review, "It is important to remember that the Veloster Turbo is every bit as much about sipping fuel as it is about performance." With the six-speed manual and regular unleaded you're going to get 26 miles per gallon city, 38 mpg highway. The best you'll get with a Volkswagen GTI is 21 city / 31 hwy, while the MazdaSpeed3 Touring checks in with 18 city / 25 hwy and those numbers for both cars are with premium gas.

A hypothetical "Veloster Turbo R-Spec" could be tweaked with more power and a retuned suspension to directly challenge other hot hatches. Also in its favor is that with an MSRP of $21,950 it's got pricing headroom between it and the $23,995 GTI and $24,000 MazdaSpeed3, even before factoring in Hyundai's propensity to load its offerings with extras. Nevertheless, let us stress the word "hypothetical" - this is speculation in the extreme. But now that we all know the potential is there, let us hope it's only a matter of time before it's realized.
Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec in the cards? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Jul 2012 09:57:00 EST.

The standard Hyundai Veloster has always reminded us of that talented freshman in high school who has everything going for him but simply lacks the strength his first year out to make the coveted varsity team.

The Veloster certainly has the looks, with unique asymmetrical four-door hatchback styling and a motorcycle-inspired interior. It also has the content, arriving with a long list of standard equipment, reasonably priced options and an impressive standard warranty. What's kept the Veloster on the JV roster, however, is what it lacks under the hood.

But things have changed between model years. The Veloster, like the scrawny kid who lifts weights all summer, has arrived for its sophomore season with a freshly toned physique and much-needed brawn. Is the new muscle enough to be competitive? How will it match up against the other players? Most important, is it enough to make the final cut?
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 11:57:00 EST.
File this one under "too good to be true." A report on Inside Line that the forthcoming 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo would carry just a $1,600 premium over the standard version had us drooling with the possibility that a 201-horsepower Veloster with heated leather seats and BlueLink might be had for under $20,000.

Alas, Hyundai tells us that Inside Line got it wrong. The truth is that the $1,600 number reflects what the turbo component is actually costing the Korean automaker. Since the Veloster Turbo will also include the base model's $2,000 Style Package as standard equipment, the car will actually have a base price around $22,000 when Hyundai announces pricing details on Wednesday. (That's right where the price was expected to be when we last heard from Inside Line on the subject, by the way.)

We've also got some clarity about pricing for the matte gray finish we so covet. While an exact number for the extra-cost option is still under wraps, we're told our guess of around $500 is close. The Veloster Turbo goes on sale this summer.
Hyundai Veloster Turbo pricing details coming this week, expected to start at $22k originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Jun 2012 16:20:00 EST.
The Hyundai Veloster has been a bit polarizing since it went on sale last year. And the debate could get more animated if the Korean company does what we think it's thinking about doing.

At a recent gathering of reporters and Hyundai executives in Ann Arbor, MI, where the annual Rolling Sculpture Car Show takes place every summer, we asked Hyundai Motors America chief John Krafcik what he planned to bring this year (the college town is also home to Hyundai America Technical Center). Last year, they showed off the new Veloster.

Redone Azera? New Santa Fe? Neither seems appropriate for the tone of the event. So, we threw this out: "How about chopping the top off the Veloster and see the reaction?"

Krafcik and PR man Jim Trainor started trying to make poker faces, indicating to us that we may well have stumbled on to a future project, Rolling Sculpture or no. But we aren't sure.

Some thought the Veloster was an answer to a question that nobody had been asking, but the unique coupe is proving to be a great sales and image success for Hyundai. Krafcik has shown a great instinct for design and engineering the Hyundai lineup to successful heights: redesigns of the Sonata, Elantra, Accent and now Santa Fe. He also had a lot to do with the cleanup of the Azera, and, of course, the Genesis and Genesis Coupe. A former product development executive at Ford, it's hard to think he would not be the current product development chief in Dearborn had he stayed, and not been scooped up by Hyundai a decade ago.

Hyundai's sales have been supply constrained on many of its models, including the Veloster. Given a finite supply of Veloster models that it can source from Korea, Krafcik plans to emphasize production of the upcoming Turbo model. That strikes us as a smart move.

We're excited about the turbo, but we couldn't resist asking a rendering artist to imagine the Veloster sans roof. What do you think? Is topless a good thing in this case?

As much as we love the 2012 Hyundai Veloster, it's the 2013 Turbo model that really gets our juices flowing (especially in matte gray, for the record). It takes that unique three-door (four-door?) configuration one step further with the addition of some more aggressive aero bits, a revised front end and new wheels; not to mention a potent 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four underhood, good for 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

The Veloster Turbo goes on sale this summer, and while official pricing hasn't been released, the folks at Inside Line have apparently confirmed that the car will start at $21,500 - $22,280 when you factor in the $760 destination charge. That's $4,205 more than a base Veloster, but in addition to more power, we expect that some of the base car's optional features will be fitted as standard kit on the Turbo.

What's really interesting, however, is Inside Line's report that the Turbo model was never even part of the original Veloster product strategy here in the United States. No big deal, because we're still getting the forced-induction hatch regardless. But the real reason why this is important is it explains why the Turbo is being offered with a six-speed automatic (in addition to a six-speed manual) rather than the dual-clutch unit found in the base car. Guess that in-house dual-clutch unit can't handle the full 195 lb-ft of the Turbo.

We expect Hyundai to release official Veloster Turbo pricing closer to the car's on-sale date this summer. And if this $21,500 base MSRP stands true, then the affordable end of America's hot hatch pool just got a lot more interesting.
Hyundai Veloster Turbo to start at $21,500? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Feb 2012 11:30:00 EST.
Hyundai has been hitting on all cylinders of late, adding the Elantra Coupe and Hatchback, the Veloster Turbo and the upcoming Azera. That's a lot of new metal for one calendar year, and it appears the Korean automaker is just getting warmed up.

Fox News reports that Hyundai USA CEO John Krafcik hinted to a new entry into the six- and seven-passenger crossover segment. The affable exec pointed out that Hyundai needed to do a better job of attracting families to the brand, adding "it's probably fair to say we need more presence in the six and seven passenger crossover segment where we have the Veracruz now."

Hyundai is also expected to unveil a new Santa Fe at the New York Auto Show, so the automaker's CUV offerings are definitely looking up. As we reported back way back in June of 2010, we expect Hyundai to eventually offer a long-wheelbase three-row version of the new Santa Fe to replace the slow-selling Veracruz, though the automaker has yet to confirm this development.

But while Krafcik hints that some new CUV metal is coming, fans of the Italic H shouldn't hold their breath in anticipation of a pickup truck. Krafcik reportedly told Fox News that the automaker could build a truck if it wanted to, but the brand will instead focus on more efficient vehicles.
CEO Krafcik says to expect more family vehicles from Hyundai, not trucks originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 10:28:00 EST.
Hyundai debuted the 2013 Veloster Turbo at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, adding some more oomph and a more aggressive look to the funky three-door hatch. We felt that an additional 63 horsepower and 71 pound-feet of torque was just what the little Hyundai needed, and we were especially digging the available matte gray paint once the Veloster hits showrooms this summer.

Here at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show Hyundai is offering a completely different take on the Veloster Turbo with a special graphics package. The decals feature a gray and yellow stripe running the length of the car, yellow trim on the front spoiler, side skirts and rear fascia, as well as a checkered flag theme on the side and roof spoiler. It's definitely over the top, but still tastefully done.

So will this graphics package make it to production? Hyundai says 'no' for this particular look, although they are working other (likely more subtle) graphics that will be available to customers.

You can see the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo with the graphics package in detail in the gallery above.
Hyundai adds more spunk to Veloster Turbo with graphics package originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 14:32:00 EST.
A few months ago, Steve Shannon, vice president of marketing at Hyundai said the brand would tailor its Super Bowl commercials to the game, instead of focusing just on features, and with this peppy quip: "We're making Super Bowl spots. We need to get that headset on. The bar is high."

The first three ads are, and in one of them, "All for One," a designer needs a little extra support getting a job done. He gets it from his coworkers. And plant workers at Hyundai's Montgomery, Alabama facility. And Rocky. Follow the jump to check that one out along with "Cheetah" (pictured) that features the 2012 Veloster Turbo and "Think Fast," which introduces the revamped Genesis Coupe R-Spec You'll also find the press release describing Hyundai's Super Bowl gameplan and find link links to watch the behind-the-scenes videos for each, as well.
Continue reading Hyundai premieres trio of Super Bowl commercials

Hyundai premieres trio of Super Bowl commercials originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Jan 2012 12:33:00 EST.
The Hyundai Veloster got off to a solid commercial and critical start in 2011, and while the eccentric hatchback has only been on the market for a few months, it's already found its fair share of friends, outselling competitors like the Honda CR-Z and Scion tC straight away.

We can see why - Veloster offers a unique mix of cut-price mix of funkiness, utility, connectivity and efficiency. However, it's also fair to say that its direct-injected 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder skews far more eco than sport. The Veloster's 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque is enough to have fun on curvy roads if you're really willing to stick your foot in it, but its performance is hardly neck snapping.

Given the three-door's sporty styling, some have suggested that there's a bit of a disconnect between the way the Veloster accelerates and the way it looks. Hyundai has apparently heard those barbs, and they've turned to forced induction for the answer. Enter the 2013 Veloster Turbo seen here, which rings up 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 194 pound-feet of torque from 1,750 rpm thanks to the addition of a twin-scroll turbo and a unique motor-actuated wastegate. Those power figures put it in the thick of the hunt with pricier performers like the Volkswagen GTI, not to mention the Honda Civic Si and Mini Cooper S, with a better weight-to-power ratio than any of them.

Visually, there will be no mistaking the Veloster Turbo for its normally aspirated kin - the new front end should make sure of that. While the Turbo retains the same headlamps and a similar overall form, Hyundai has replaced the standard car's modest chrome-edged grille slot and lower fascia with a massive hexagonal opening for better breathing and rearview mirror intimidation. The gaping maw extends both above and below the bumper, and it's bookmarked by a new set of foglights.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo is a mighty mite

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo is a mighty mite originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 15:10:00 EST.
Another embargo has fallen by the wayside, at least partially. We have a lot to tell you about the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, but much of it has to wait until the car is revealed tomorrow afternoon at the Detroit Auto Show.

What we can show and tell you, what's already out and about on the Internet, are these three images and the basic specs below.

Note that the standard Veloster's 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine produces only 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque. The extra 63 horsepower afforded by the addition of a turbocharger, among other mechanical upgrades we'll talk about later, makes the Veloster instantly competitive with other sport compacts like the Volkswagen GTI, Honda Civic Si and Mini Cooper S.

Make sure to come back tomorrow afternoon when we call tell you all we know about the 2012 Veloster Turbo, as well as share live images from its debut at the Detroit Auto Show.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo

 201 horsepower / 196 pound-feet of torque

Six-speed manual or dual clutch transmission

2,800 pounds (up from 2,584 pounds)

 27 City / 38 Hwy

This time, we were rewarded with a couple of images and the basic weight/powertrain details. Specifically, we know power is boosted a whole helluva lot from 138 horsepower to 201 horsepower. Torque is also up to 195 lb-ft of torque from the now paltry-seeming 123 lb-ft of torque.

Transmission choices still include the 6-speed manual and automatic. Weight is also up from 2,584 pounds to 2,800 pounds, which puts it lower than the Civic Si Coupe and GTI with comparable power. The projected fuel economy is 27 mpg city and 38 mpg, which blows away the other hot hatches (the best is the 27/35 mpg for the 2012 Cooper S).

The 2012 Hyundai Veloster has plenty of hot hatch potential, but its frugal, 1.6-liter, direct-injected four-cylinder just isn't going to cut it for those more concerned with speed than fuel economy. While a turbo model has long been rumored, we've now got confirmation - sort of.

While Hyundai hasn't said anything official about the turbo Veloster, it has unveiled a new turbocharged 1.6-liter engine at a conference in Korea this week. Hyundai says it spent 52 months and over $60 million developing the new mill, which meets California's ULEV-2 and Euro 5 standards.

The 204-horsepower Gamma four-cylinder gets its extra 66 horses thanks to a twin-scoll turbocharger and an air-to-air intercooler. The turbo, which is integrated into the exhaust manifold, also boosts the Gamma's torque to a tire-squealing 195 lb-ft.

With a curb weight of just 2,600 pounds, the Veloster could be quite a pocket rocket with this engine fitted underhood. Let's hope a limited-slip differential is also in the cards.

We expect some sort of official announcement from Hyundai regarding the Veloster Turbo as early as November 1 at SEMA.
We haven't been behind the wheel of one yet, but we're thinking that the normally aspirated 2012 Hyundai Veloster probably looks a little faster than it is - we say this only because a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 138 horsepower can only be so spirited. We've heard previously that a turbocharged version of the Veloster is on the way, but thus far, details haven't been easy to come by.

If several new stories in Hyundai forums are to be believed, the Veloster Turbo will feature a 1.6-liter GDI turbo powerplant capable of 208 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm. That's not exactly game-changing power, but keep in mind that the little Veloster weighs all of 2,600 pounds, giving the little coupe a 12.48-pounds-per-pony ratio. And if the Veloster Turbo does indeed feature the 1.6-liter, we're thinking the little ride's laudable 40 mile per gallon highway fuel economy bogey won't be affected all that much.

A 208-horsepower Veloster sounds just dandy to us, but we're still looking forward to official word from Hyundai to confirm. Hopefully we'll hear something more official about the boosted Veloster very soon.
