The soft-top made its world debut on the heels of its sibling, unveiled the following year at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show. Now in its seventh model year, the non-S Roadster is one of the automaker's least expensive offerings (remembering that we are not subjected to the Scion iQ-based, but Aston Martin-branded, Cygnet on our shores).

As an entry-level Aston Martin, the V8 Vantage Roadster hides in the shadows of not only the higher performing Vantage S models, but the One-77, V12 Zagato, Rapide, DB9 and new Vanquish, just to name a few. The glitz, glamour and bright lights are bestowed on the more spectacular siblings, while the standard Vantage Roadster is left in the shadows.

But don't be fooled into thinking that its relative position in the family extinguishes its style, performance or British character. The 2013 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster not only holds its own ground, but it has significantly more appeal after a slew of recent updates.
Continue reading 2013 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster [w/video]

2013 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Nov 2012 11:57:00 EST.
A pair of head-turning high performance cars are catching some attention off a different kind, in the form of safety recalls. Aston Martin and Lotus have issued recalls for the V12 Vantage Coupe and Evora, respectively.

Aston Martin's affects 169 examples of the 2009-2012 V12 Vantage Coupe. It concerns the tire-pressure monitoring system, and is less a malfunction than it is a compliance issue. The TPMS does not alert the driver until the front tire is more than 25 percent below the recommended cold tire pressure. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138 states that the alarm must sound when tire pressure is "equal to or less than either the pressure 25 percent below" the recommended cold inflation pressure. To address the issue, Aston Martin will notify owners and reprogram the software, free of charge.

As for Lotus, 80 supercharged Evoras have been recalled, all built between February and September, 2011. The problem involves an engine-mounted oil feed pipe, which could rupture, causing loss of engine oil or a possible fire if the oil sprays onto a hot engine.

Lotus will notify owners and repair the problem, free of charge. NHTSA invites anyone who owns these affected vehicles to contact its safety hotline or go on its website for additional information. To find out more about these recalls, refer to the press release posted below.
Continue reading Aston Martin and Lotus each issue recalls

Aston Martin and Lotus each issue recalls originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 14 Oct 2012 16:03:00 EST.
Here it is in all of its open air glory: The 2013 Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster.

Aston Martin has just released official photos and specs for its all-new roadster that will have limited availability around the world. It is powered by Aston's 6.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine that cranks out 510-horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The English firm promises a 0-to-62 mph time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph.

Compared to the V12 Vantage Coupe, the roadster has a redesigned rear decklid, which includes a new "flip" to provide high-speed stability and lower front intakes. It also arrives with chassis changes and a modified damper setup with unique valves and redesigned rear springs. Oh, and it's a convertible.

Aston uses carbon fiber all around the body and will offer an optional interior package with additional carbon fiber pieces.

The roadster comes with a starting price of ₤150,000 - that's $233,340 to you, Yankee. Scroll down to view the press release.
Continue reading Aston Martin makes V12 Vantage Roadster official

Aston Martin makes V12 Vantage Roadster official originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jul 2012 13:29:00 EST.
Well, it's about time. Just like how the Aston Martin V8 Vantage coupe became the V12 Vantage coupe, a similar treatment is now being done to the company's smallest droptop. And thanks to the magic of the Interwebs, a smattering of details and photos of this, the V12 Vantage Roadster, have leaked out early.

Just like the coupe, the roadster will be powered by Aston's infamous 6.0-liter V12, good for 510 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, all of which will be sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. According to reports, the roadster has been given a revised rear decklid spoiler, a redesigned front air gurney and enhancements to the suspension in order to make it just as dynamically pleasing as its hardtop kin.

Other V12 Roadster-specific changes include a healthy dose of carbon fiber on the mirror caps, center stack and gearshift surround, as well as blacked-out elements to the exterior, newly designed wheels and glass switches inside the cabin. Only 101 of the twelve-cylinder roadsters are reportedly being made (at least, that's what the leaked photo of the sill plaque tells us), with the cars likely going on sale in the not-too-distant future. Stay tuned for more details.
Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster revealed early originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Jul 2012 13:29:00 EST. Hence the Dragon 88 Limited Edition.

A special trim level available on the DBS Volante, Virage Coupe and V8 Vantage S, the Dragon 88 range is outfitted at the hands of the Q by Aston Martin division that tricked out the matte-violet Virage we saw in Geneva. The Dragon 88 celebrates the Year of the Dragon with such special touches as 24-carat gold badges, embroidered headrests, special interior trim, commemorative sill plates and a choice of three unique exterior colors.

As the name implies, only 88 examples will be offered, exclusively in China, at an as-yet undisclosed price. Since your chances of ever seeing one up close, then, remains rather slim, the high-res image gallery above (joined by the press release after the jump) is probably your best shot.
Continue reading Aston Martin rolls out Dragon 88 special editions in Beijing

Aston Martin rolls out Dragon 88 special editions in Beijing originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Apr 2012 13:29:00 EST.
Back in February, Aston Martin announced a revision to its entry-level model - the V8 Vantage - for European markets, and subsequently revealed it to the public at the Geneva Motor Show. Of course, we knew it would only be a matter of time until the updated Vantage would find its way Stateside, and that time has now come.

Many of the updates are borrowed from the slightly up-market Vantage S, including some mild cosmetic changes and the optional seven-speed Sportshift II sequential transmission replacing the clunkier six-speed version that preceded it. The suspension and brakes have also been upgraded on the new model, but the 4.7-liter V8 and its 420 horsepower carry over unchanged.

So how much will a new V8 Vantage set you back with all these updates? $118,370 for the coupe, or $132,870 for the Roadster - which actually represents a slight discount over the previous coupe model and a negligible increase on the convertible. Like what you see? You're invited to dive into the full press release and specifications below, along with the high-resolution images in the gallery above.
Continue reading Aston Martin announces, prices updated V8 Vantage for U.S.

Aston Martin announces, prices updated V8 Vantage for U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 16:28:00 EST.
It is hard to believe, but the gorgeous Aston Martin V8 Vantage is pushing seven years on the market. In that time, the British automaker has worked hard to keep its sporty coupe relevant and current. Along those lines, and in a move expected to be embraced by enthusiasts worldwide, the 2012 model is on the receiving end of yet another comprehensive update (its last was in 2008).

While the naturally-aspirated 4.8-liter V8 (pumping out 420 horsepower) and six-speed manual gearbox remain unchanged, the optional automatic transmission has been upgraded from last year's six-speed Sportshift to a seven-speed Sportshift II sequential transmission. While it still remains a single-clutch unit (while the rest of the industry is migrating towards dual-clutch), it will deliver smoother and quicker performance when compared to its predecessor.

Other tweaks include a quickened steering rack and beefier brakes (now configured with Hill Start Assist). Lastly, the front fascia has been resculpted to improve and optimize airflow to the brakes and radiator - and to make it easier to differentiate from its siblings. Check out the press release below. The first gallery is live from the Geneva Motor Show floor, and we have also posted a few official images from Aston Martin.
Continue reading 2012 Aston Martin V8 Vantage emerges with a slew of improvements

2012 Aston Martin V8 Vantage emerges with a slew of improvements originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 00:01:00 EST. Aston Martin showed off a few photos of the production version of the V12 Zagato last month, and then a video recently. If you're one of the no-more-than 150 customers who manages to take one home, then here are detailed views of what you can expect. The rear end is particularly striking, even with a wing that's the least stylized object on the entire car.

The £330,000 aluminum and carbon fiber coupe hides 510 horsepower and production tricks borrowed from the One-77. Deliveries will begin toward the end of this year, but you can explore its glory now in the gallery of high-res photos from the Geneva Motor Show floor.
Continue reading Aston Martin V12 Zagato is the Red Baron of coupes

Aston Martin V12 Zagato is the Red Baron of coupes originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 13:29:00 EST.
Few outfits have benefited from the kind of success that Aston Martin Racing has enjoyed. The team has emerged as an absolutely dominant force in the numerous GT classes of endurance racing around the world. But Aston's success arguably went to its head a little, prompting AMR to abandon its GT racing program to privateers as the team itself attempted to step up to the top-tier LMP1 class with the AMR-One.

That ended up a fool's errand that yielded none of the success to which the Prodrive squadron had become accustomed. So after three years nipping at the heels of Audi and Peugeot, AMR has announced its return to production-based GT racing with this, the Aston Martin Vantage GTE.

Designed to comply with the amalgamated GTE Pro class regulations set out by the ACO and FIA for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the new World Endurance Championship, the Vantage GTE is based on the V8 Vantage, but upgraded considerably to competition spec. Its aerodynamically optimized carbon fiber bodywork - draped in iconic blue and orange Gulf livery - packs a 4.5-liter V8 with a six-speed sequential transaxle and adjustable everything to optimize the package for specific race tracks.

The team will field one car at each of the races on the WEC calendar - from its debut at Sebring on March 17 through Spa, Silverstone, Sao Paulo, Bahrain, Fuji and Shanghai - with a second car to join at Le Mans in June. Follow the jump for the full press release and video clip, check out the high-res images in the gallery for a closer look.
Continue reading Aston Martin unleashes new Vantage GTE on WEC, Le Mans [w/video]

Aston Martin unleashes new Vantage GTE on WEC, Le Mans [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 15:30:00 EST.
Aston Martin has had the V8 Vantage on the market since 2005, making it seven years old this year. That's a fairly long life-cycle for any car, but that doesn't mean Gaydon hasn't tried its best to keep it current, releasing the most comprehensive update since the refresh it received in 2008.

Although the 420-horsepower, 4.7-liter V8 with six-speed manual continue unchanged, buyers can now opt for the seven-speed Sportshift II sequential transmission from the Vantage S in place of the jerky old six-speed Sportshift.

The steering rack has also been quickened, the tires widened and the brakes enlarged and aided by Hill Start Assist. To distinguish the new model from the old - and to help cool those beefed-up rotors - the front intake has been enlarged, while a new front splitter, side sills and rear diffuser help optimize airflow.

The updated V8 Vantage is currently confirmed only for the UK and European markets and is
set for unveiling at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, but you can check it out now - in both coupe and Roadster form - in the press release after the jump and the high-res images in the gallery. Meanwhile, the Vantage S and V12 Vantage continue on largely unchanged, but now play second fiddle to the exclusive V12 Zagato.
Continue reading Aston Martin tweaks V8 Vantage for Geneva debut

Aston Martin tweaks V8 Vantage for Geneva debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 08:29:00 EST.
Aston Martin has pulled back the sheets on the first images of its production V12 Zagato. The road car is headed for an official debut at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March.

Following in the tradition of the automaker's ultra exclusive One-77, the V12 Zagato will take more than 2,000 man-hours to manufacture thanks to hand-hewn body panels, including the hood, roof and doors. Not surprisingly, Aston Martin has committed to building just 150 examples. The V12 Zagato will also make extensive use of carbon fiber, with the front and rear fenders, trunk lid and door sills all constructed from the composite.

Aston Martin created four new colors especially for the V12 Zagato, and paint alone takes 100 hours to complete. Indoors, it takes a full seven hides to cover the cabin in hand-stitched, quilted leather.

The V12 Zagato effectively rides on the same underpinnings as the V12 Vantage, which means buyers can look forward to a 6.0-liter V12 engine with 510 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, while a six-speed manual transmission puts the power to the ground. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Aston Martin debuts production V12 Zagato

Aston Martin debuts production V12 Zagato originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 10:10:00 EST.
It's amazing what a company like Aston Martin can do with what essentially amounts to two product families. Discounting the Toyota-built Cygnet and the exclusive One-77, the company's entire line-up is based around either the Vantage or the DB9. While the latter has also spawned the Virage, the DBS and the Rapide, Aston has also done a lot with the former. There's the V8 Vantage, the Vantage S, the V12 Vantage and even the exotic V12 Zagato - not to mention countless racing versions.

And then there's the convertibles. Aston offers open-top versions of just about all of these (save, once again, the Cygnet, One-77 and Rapide). All that's been missing is a V12 Vantage Roadster, and now word has it that Aston's got that one in the pipeline for the near future, too.

The formula is pretty simple: taking the mechanical bits from the V12 Vantage coupe and fit the folding fabric roof mechanism from the V8 Vantage Roadster and presto! an open-top twelve-cylinder roadster. And with 510 horsepower on tap, it should make for one heck of a wild ride. We're told to expect it's arrival as soon as the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, so stay tuned.
Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster coming to Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Dec 2011 10:45:00 EST.
It seems to us like Aston Martin never tires of rolling out ever hotter renditions of its Vantage sports coupe. As if the original V8 Vantage weren't enticing enough, Aston then shoehorned a V12 under the hood. Zagato then rebodied what we already thought was one of the shapeliest beasts on the market. And the improvements just keep on rumbling in. But then there's the racing versions. Oh, the racing versions!

The N24 showed us what it meant to take beauty to the beast that is the Nürburgring. Then came the GT4 racing model, followed by the even hotter GT2. The category in-between used to be tended to by the DBRS9, but now Aston's opted to replace it with yet another competition version of the Vantage.

First teased back in April, Aston revealed further photos and details of the V12 Vantage GT3 in August, and the British marque has now commenced track testing of its latest racing machine. Packing a 6.0-liter V12 with more than 600 horsepower and enough wings and ducting to make a fighter jet blush, the new Vantage GT3 has already covered a thousand kilometers of shakedown running while gearing up to take on series like the FIA GT3 championships, the Blancpain Endurance Series and the VLN Nürburgring series.

Like what you see? There's a fresh pair of images we've added to our gallery, and a whole mess of specifications in the press release after the jump, so check 'em out and start dreaming of racing glory.
Continue reading Aston Martin gets to work on new V12 Vantage GT3

Aston Martin gets to work on new V12 Vantage GT3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Nov 2011 14:25:00 EST.
Recent endurance races have seen Aston Martin fielding cars at every level of competition, and the British sportscar manufacturer isn't about to give up its strategy of proliferation.

The proof? A few months back, we brought you word that Aston was planning on replacing its DBRS9 with a new Vantage-based racer for the GT3 category to slot in between the GT2 and GT4-spec Vantages. And here it is.

Based on the V12 Vantage road car, the Vantage GT3 packs a dry-sump 6.0-liter V12 with 600 horsepower mated via carbon-fiber propshaft to an Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission, equipped with competition-spec ABS and traction control for those wet laps around the Nordschleife.

Of course, the VLN Nürburgring series isn't the only championship for which the new Vantage GT3 is eligible, designed as it has been from the outset to race in the FIA GT3 Championship, ADAC Masters, Blancpain Endurance Series and others.

Deliveries are scheduled to commence early next year with a price tag of £298,000 - $489,000 USD by today's rates.
Zagato, it turns out, isn't the only coachbuilder working on a supercar based on an Aston Martin: a Danish outfit called HBH is reportedly planning to build model based on the V12 Vantage as well, but theirs will be a unique mid-engine design.

The company takes its name from its founders: Jesper Hermann, Christian Brandt and Torben Hartvig. Between them, they've worked on such small-run supercar projects as the Kleeman GTK, Zenvo ST1 and the Sondergard prototype.

Drawing inspiration from the 1979 Aston Martin Bulldog concept and from Lola's Aston-powered LMP1 racer and the in-house AMR-One that followed, HBH is reportedly working Aston's 6.0-liter V12 into a bespoke chassis.

So far HRH has only released the teaser image above, which we've lightened for a better view. The project is slated to be built as a solitary example for a single customer, who will retain the rights to the design as well as any prospect of its future production. In other words, if they find the right customer, they'll build him one, but a further production run could be in the cards as well.
Danish firm HRH planning mid-engined Aston Martin supercar originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 May 2011 15:31:00 EST.
It used to be that Aston Martin race cars were staggered: the GT1 and GT3 cars were based on the DB9, while the GT2 and GT4 machines were based on the Vantage. But that was before the V12 Vantage came into the production lineup, and before the company veered into top-tier LMP1 racing. And while the DBRS9 is still competitive in the GT3 class, Aston has opted to replace it with a new car based on the V12 Vantage.

The new Vantage GT3 packs a competition version of the dry-sump 6.0-liter V12 from the road car, mated to an Xtrac paddle-shift gearbox and race-honed ABS and traction control. Although exact specifications have yet to be finalized, Aston hopes to get the engine up to 600 horsepower and weight down to 1250 kg (2,755 pounds) by the time the car makes its debut in July, with ten customer cars set to be completed by the start of next season to gradually replace the 26 examples of the DBRS9 built to date. Press release after the jump.
Nestled in a secluded valley in the south of Spain is the Ascari Race Resort. Celebrated as one of the world's most beautiful tracks, the private 3.2-mile ribbon of perfectly smooth blacktop challenges drivers with 26 corners, 10-degree climbs and 18-degree banks as it weaves through the mature oak trees that dot the landscape. Named after Alberto Ascari, the first double world Formula 1 champion, the well-manicured decade-old venue is the type of circuit enthusiasts fantasize about.

Our private shuttle takes us through the manned guard gate towards the main clubhouse. As we round the corner, and head down the shallow hill, the sun reflects off something in the distance. Parked in the paddock are a dozen glistening sports cars - some coupes, some roadsters - each still dripping wet from the overnight shower that leaves the air fresh and crisp. The vehicles, the latest offering from Aston Martin, are the enthusiast-targeted Vantage S Coupe and Roadster.

Nine times zones from home with jet lag extinguished by a morning café grande, I figure it is time to get behind the wheel. Only one thing is more enjoyable than driving the new Aston Martin Vantage S through the mountains of Spain - spending a long afternoon with the sports cars on the wide-open Ascari race circuit.
Not to step on John Stewart's toes or anything, but it's now time for your moment of Zen. After seeing yesterday's smoking-hot photos of the first production Singer 911, we thought this week just couldn't get any better. We're happy to tell you that we were completely wrong. The good people of Motor Authority have been so kind as to slip the web a taste of the 2011 Aston Martin Vantage S courtesy of a lengthy, high-definition slice of B-roll.

The video is a full eight minutes and six seconds of ocular and audio bliss, recorded at the Ascari Race Resort in beautiful Spain. The footage isn't marred by such blemishes as traffic or stoplights, and the buttery smooth surface of the track is free of aggravations like potholes or road salt. Instead, there's simply the meaty Aston Martin and nothing to do but lay waste to every apex. Hit the jump to indulge yourself.

Sketched drawings of imaginary sports cars covered my notebook as an elementary school pupil. Assembled in the ether of a daydream, each penciled design came from an imagination unrestrained by reality, with nary a concession to things like outward visibility, bumper heights or ground clearance. Engines were huge, tires were wide and bodywork was unbelievably sleek. It didn't matter that none of the drawings represented real cars. From my naive perspective, I could bring the world's coolest cars to life in two-dimensional black and white.

Thirty years later, I find myself sitting in the driver's seat of a 2011 Aston Martin V12 Vantage. To a car guy, this artful amalgamate of aluminum, magnesium, carbon fiber, leather, rubber and glass represents pure sensory overload. As a jaded automotive journalist, I'm supposed to maintain a poker face when presented with such an objet d'art. Plainly, I am struggling today.

Marek Reichman's Aston Martin Vantage GT4 - Click above for high-res image gallery

And he's going racing with it. Marek Reichman, the design director for Aston Martin, will be hopping into the saddle of a Vantage GT4 for his first shot at the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge of Great Britain. Reichman has gone fender to fender before, though he typically keeps to vintage club racing. This will be the first time he's stepped up to the 90-minute big boy leagues of his company's one-make series. Reichman won't be doing it alone, though. Chris Porritt, the engineering manager for Aston Martin, will be sharing driving duties.

Porritt has helmed the mighty Vantage GT4 in the past, though most of his experience has been at the Nürburgring. We're thinking that if he can keep the car shiny side up around Green Hell, he should have no problem going toe to toe with the rest of the field. That doesn't mean that the competition is going to be a cakewalk for the team - so far this season, the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge has proven to be full of more than capable racers. The series is slated to kick off at Oulton Park on Saturday, August 21. Hit the jump for a peek at the press release.
