Audi invited us out to a California track a little more than a year ago for some hot laps in its new TT RS. Fresh out of development, the enthusiast-tuned variant of its ever-stylish coupe was fitted with a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder sending 340 horsepower to every corner through Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Quick, nimble and offered only with a six-speed manual, the gussied-up two-seater was not only the ultimate expression of the chassis' capabilities, it was a gift to those with a passion for driving.

Last September, after a successful Facebook petition, Audi decided to bring the TT RS to the States. As word of the announcement spread, we're guessing that more than a few Porsche Boxster and Mercedes-Benz SLK owners felt chills go up their spines.

Fourteen months after blasting around Willow Springs Raceway in the talented TT RS, we found a TT 2.0T Quattro sitting in our driveway. For those unfamiliar with Audi's lineup, the 2.0T is relegated to the bottom of the pole as the least expensive and least powerful model in the franchise.

So... just how would we swallow the entry-level coupe with the taste of the wondrous TT RS still fresh in our mouths? As it happened, we were pleasantly surprised.
Continue reading 2011 Audi TT 2.0 Quattro Coupe

2011 Audi TT 2.0 Quattro Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 11:57:00 EST.
Starting April 9, the world will get its first peek at next year's Audi TT at AMI Lepzig. So far, details are iffy on exactly what we can expect from the 2011 coupe and roadster, but the car is due for a mild facelift. We're guessing new front and rear fascias and a revised wheel program are likely to find their way into the soup de jour.

While the reworked TT models will be the highlight of the show, Audi has also promised to bring along a slew of its other products. Nestled among the 25 production models and two show cars will be the freshly-minted A1 compact as well as at least one of the e-Tron show cars. AMI Lepzig will run from April 9-18. Follow the jump for the press release.

Audi TT sculpture - click above for high-res gallery

It's not at all unusual for successive generations of a car line to grow larger the preceding edition. However, in an era where down-sizing is becoming more common, this is a bit absurd. Actually, the car shown here is a 33.5 foot long, 10-ton sculpture of the Audi TT coupe.

The giant TT has actually been around for several years now, debuting in Berlin in 2006 and having been shown in Beijing, Munich, and Hong Kong since then. The outsized work of art has now been brought to Audi's Ingolstadt headquarters as part of the centenial celebrations of the automaker. The sculpture has been placed in the center of a roundabout in Ingolstadt where it should pose absolutely no issues with driver distraction... right, guys? Check out the high-res gallery of images below, as well as the press release and a video of the sculpture being trucked in after the jump.

Gallery: Audi TT Sculpture

[Source: Audi]
Continue reading Audi gifts hometown with 10-ton TT as part of centennial celebration [w/VIDEO]

Audi gifts hometown with 10-ton TT as part of centennial celebration [w/VIDEO] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 11:30:00 EST. Now that the disappointment has subsided somewhat, Audi is offering up a consolation prize, although it's not known yet if the US market will get a crack at it. For the first time since the original TT debuted ten years ago, Audi will be offering a version with a diesel engine. A 170 hp, 258 lb-ft 2.0L TDI will be available in both the TT Coupe and Roadster. Putting the torque down through all four wheels by way of a six-speed manual gearbox, the coupe will run 0-62 mph in 7.5 sec, with the ragtop accomplishing the feat in 7.7sec. While by no means blistering speeds, the nature of diesel engine torque will mean that the TTs will feel quick everywhere. The real upside to all of this is the fuel economy of this claimed world's first diesel sports car. The lighter, more aerodynamic coupe will be capable of 44.3 mpg (US) while the convertible is just behind again at 42.7. Pretty impressive when gas prices as likely to go ever higher. Finally, Dr. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Audi AG,together with German football stars, unveiled a supersized TT sculpture, 10 meters long and weighing a svelte 10tonnes. The sculpture is one of many that will symbolize milestones in German innovation in an outdoor sculpturedisplay called "The Walk of Ideas." The TT Coupe was chosen to celebrate Germany as the birthplace of theautomobile.

After unveiling the mega-Audi, two real-life TT Coupes drove into the display area through theBrandenburg Gate. Screencaps of the unveiling after the jump, and more pictures of the TT Coupe! Specs to follow!

[Source: Audi AG]
Continue reading World premiere: Audi TT Coupe

World premiere: Audi TT Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 06 Apr 2006 13:30:00 EST.
