Acura recalling 76,000 TSX sedans in certain cold-weather states

Parent company Honda is issuing a recall for Acura TSX vehicles from model years 2004 to 2008, for a rather interesting fault with the electrical systems (well, kind of). It seems that TSX made between during that range have carpeting that degrades when it becomes saturated with "corrosive materials for deicing." The carpeting is in contact with each Acura's electronic control unit, which may in turn rust or become corroded as a result. All of that business could cause the engine to stall.

Acura is singling out cars registered in states that use these corrosive deicing materials (presumably road salt): Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by Honda and instructed to bring their cars into the nearest Acura dealership. Dealers will inspect the ECU for damage, replace if needed, and cover with a waterproof piece; all free of charge. Check out the official recall notice below.

Acura RL replacement coming in April, TL or TSX to be killed

Acura is bringing Goodies to the Detroit Auto Show - the capital "g" warranted for the NSX concept alone - but it has more aces in more sleeves: Car and Driver reports that the RL replacement is coming to the New York Auto Show. The RL is made up of some nice pieces, but even with heaps of cabin tech and SH-AWD it has never been able to outsmart its overwhelming anonymity - or its larger and less costly sibling, the TL.

The next round of RL is meant to bring a sedan that embodies Acura's brand values, in this case said to mean "relatively lightweight, nimble, and economical," and perhaps not called RL. It does not mean an eight-cylinder, however, with a V6 plus working the front wheels and two electric motors on duty at the rear. Space is said to rival a BMW 7 Series, while exterior dimensions will hover around those of the 5 Series. We just hope those dimensions are draped sheetmetal that's memorable for all the right reasons, not the wrong ones.

But Acura's lineup switch means there might not be enough room for both the TSX and TL (pictured) in between the new RL on top and the Civic-based ILX sedan coming in at the bottom C/D see the permutations of either sedan being pruned, even though, like us, they find it less believable that the solid-selling TL would disappear. It's posited that the new RL could change its name to TL, but that seems least plausible - after all, Prince already showed us how awful it would be to have to call your sedan "The Model Formerly Known As RL." More substantial answers will come in New York on April 4.

Acura prices 2012 TSX range, including new Special Edition

Acura has priced the 2012 TSX sedan and wagon, including the one we're most interested in, the new TSX Special Edition. Visual changes on the SE include a revised body kit and 17-inch alloys with a polished finish against a dark gray background. Inside, the SE gets black perforated-suede seats with red stitching and highlights.

Pricing for the 2012 TSX SE begins at $30,810* with either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual . That's just a grand more than the base TSX, which strikes us as a pretty fair deal. Order the Technology Package, which adds an upgraded audio system and navigation, and the MSRP rises to $32,910.

The aforementioned prices are for TSX models with the 201-horsepower 2.4-liter four. Upgrading to the 280-horsepower V6 (and required automatic) increases the cost of entry to $35,350, or $38,450 with the Technology Package.

Finally, wagon lovers can score the cargo-maximized TSX for $31,160 or $34,810 with all the tech goodies. All models also carry a $885 destination charge. Hit the press release after the break for the full rundown.

2012 Acura TSX gets new Special Edition model

Acura has decided to spice up its entry-level TSX sedan, and this, the 2012 Special Edition, is the end result. No, there isn't any more power on tap, but some styling tweaks do give the TSX a sportier look. A more aggressive front spoiler and rear fascia lend an air of extra sportiness, and compliment the updated side sill. New 17-inch alloy wheels now feature a polished finish with a dark gray background.

Inside, Acura has pumped up the interior with black suede inserts on the seats that's contrasted by red stitching. More of the red color makes its way to the steering wheel and shift knob, as well as the lighting of the gauges, footwell and cabin. That footwell area also see the addition of aluminum pedal covers.

The automaker says that the TSX Special Edition was designed to "evoke the fun-to-drive four-cylinder Acuras of the past," so the 2.4-liter inline-four is the only engine available. Both a five-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmission are available.

The 2012 Acura TSX Special Edition will make its debut at the Orange County Auto Show on September 22nd. That's approximately the same time it will arrive on dealer showrooms.

Station wagons are a bit like free dinners. Your parents appreciate them, auto journalists love them and nobody buys them. It's that last trait that's led to the near extinction of the family wagon, save for a few luxury rigs, a Volkswagen and a Subaru. And why not? Who needs a station wagon when a crossover is just as roomy, not as efficient and generally more expensive?

Given the current state of the wagon in the U.S., we were resigned to the fact that the stubby two-box was on its way to oblivion. But that hasn't stopped Honda from turning the European Accord into the 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon. And putting our auto-journo biases aside for the moment, we're damn glad they did.

Letting a 16-year-old loose on the world behind the wheel of a couple of tons of metal is a terrifying thought. Statistically, teens are more likely to die in a car accident than by any other means, and, most of the time, those accidents are avoidable.

To make picking a car for your teen easier, Consumer Reports has come up with a list of relatively new, relatively cheap options to keep your kids safe while they ~~bomb around with five of their friends~~ make the commute between school, work and home.

As you may imagine, CR recommends a family sedan that packs in as many modern safety features as you can afford, including stability control, ABS, traction control and side curtain air bags. They eschew trucks and SUVs due to their comparatively poor handling, high centers of gravity and bad gas mileage. Don't even go there with sports cars.

Consumer Reports prime choices are as follows: the Acura TSX, the 2009 and up Ford Focus, the 2007 and up Hyundai Sonata or Hyundai Elantra, 2007 and up Mazda3, 2008 and on Scion xB, and both the 2007 and up Volkswagen Jetta and Rabbit/Golf. Click past the jump for a video of CR's choices.

Brush your long, grungy mop from your eyes, turn down the Nirvana and take a look around. It's the early '90s and an army of sport utility vehicles are flooding the streets. The newest four-wheeled object of America's affection has quickly become the default mode of transportation for everyone from inner city professionals to suburban soccer moms.

Fast forward a couple of decades and although sport utes are still around, they've largely been displaced by the crossover - the SUV's easier-to-maneuver, more fuel efficient and more comfortable unibody progeny. But even after years of refinement, the CUV is still a basketcase of compromises. Which begs the question: Did we have it right back in the day? During a product briefing today, Acura executives revealed that the 2011 TSX Sport Wagon will be priced from $30,960 (not including $860 for destination) when it goes on sale in just a few weeks. This represents a price increase of $1,350 versus the slightly refreshed 2011 TSX sedan that recently debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

All TSX Sport Wagons come standard with a leather-trimmed interior, premium seven-speaker sound system, XM radio, USB audio with iPod integration, Bluetooth connectivity and a power moonroof. For an extra $3,650 you can opt for the TSX Technology Package, which adds sat-nav with voice recognition and rear-view camera, an ELS surround audio system, GPS-linked solar-sensing climate control and a power liftgate out back.

The only engine available in the Sport Wagon is the TSX's 2.4-liter inline-four, mated exclusively to a five-speed automatic transmission (a six-speed manual is available on the sedan). 201 horsepower is perfectly adequate for the Sport Wagon, but we're curious as to why Acura felt it necessary to leave the sedan's 280-hp V6 mill out of the mix. We'll have the full report of how the TSX Sport Wagon fares out on the road in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

LA 2010: 2011 Acura TSX is more of the same

Don't blink, you may just miss the subtle changes to the 2011 Acura TSX sedan that made its debut at the LA Auto Show this week. The changes to the four-door are limited to just a handful of aesthetic tweaks. The refresh includes an altered fascia and fog light surround, and new tail lamps are also part of the mix. Acura also threw in a fresh batch of wheel designs, including both 17- and 18-inch rollers, depending on trim level.

Thrilling, we know. And it can all be yours for the base price of $29,610.

Buyers can look forward to the same drivetrain as before, which means both a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6 are available. In its most potent guise, the 2011 TSX will lay down 280 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque.

For all the similarities, Acura has managed to squeeze a bit more fuel economy from its small sedan. The car now delivers 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway when equipped with the four-pot and stick, or 22/31 with the automatic, which is a 1 mpg improvement across the board. The 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon will be new to America's sliver of luxury wagon buyers, but the fact is that it's little more than a rebadged European Honda Accord estate with a bit more pizazz in the interior. But hey, who cares? The TSX may well be the best-looking Acura, and now it comes with more room for our stuff.

Team Honda is getting ready to launch the new wagon with a :30 second commercial that shows some Autobot-like shape-shifting CGI. The video shows the front-wheel-drive TSX sedan drifting through a hot corner, and as it swings into opposite lock, the body panels of the sedan strip away, only for the car to be reconstituted into something a bit more capacious. The animation is more Wallace and Gromit than Transformers, but the idea behind the spot is clear; the newest TSX may be a wagon, but its soul is still 100-percent sports sedan. Acura mulling TSX coupe, Civic-based sedan?

Acura is planning a host of product updates in the very near future, and along with the launch of the TSX Wagon, two new models could come down the pike. According to Autoweek, Acura is considering a coupe built atop the TSX platform and a compact sedan to capitalize on the States' newfound love of smaller vehicles.

A TSX-based coupe would fill the gap left by the CL after its demise in 2003, and while Acura already produces a compact sedan for the Canadian market - the Acura CSX pictured above - it's simply a re-badged Civic with an upgraded interior. Obviously, Acura would need to do more to woo buyers into a smaller vehicle, and its best bet is to leverage one of Honda's other platforms for the task. An Acura Fit? Not so much...

Honda has put out a recall of around 167,000 Acura TSX sedans to fix a power steering hose and o-ring gasket which could deteriorate prematurely. Previous generation (2004-2008) models are affected by the issue, which involves the hose cracking due to high underhood temperatures resulting in the power steering fluid leaking, contacting the exhaust components and potentially creating smoke or a fire.

Owners can expect to receive notification in the mail late next month, but you can get all the details in the release after the jump.

There's quite a phenomenon at this year's New York Auto Show. Two - yes, two wagons have debuted. The first was the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon (our current pick for Best In Show, we might add), and the second is from Acura. The U.S.-market Acura TSX is the Honda Accord overseas, and the wagon variant that other markets will finally come to our shores to fill out the TSX lineup.

From all appearances, the only differences between the Euro Accord wagon and the TSX Sport Wagon are the addition of Acura badges and a slightly more upscale interior. Powering the Sport Wagon is the same 2.4-liter inline-four found in the sedan, mated exclusively to a five-speed automatic transmission. Official fuel economy numbers haven't been finalized just yet, but Acura claims that the wagon will achieve around 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

Sadly, the TSX wagon is only available with front-wheel drive, as Acura says that it has no plans to offer its Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system in the TSX range. A pity, since we're big fans of this grips-at-all-paws setup. This could prove to be a sticking point for some consumers, however, especially since Acura's claimed competitive set (BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, namely) both offer all-wheel drive.

Still, we're always pleased to see another wagon on the road, and we're hoping that consumers will feel the same when the TSX Sport Wagon hits dealerships in late Fall. We knew it was coming, it was just a matter of when. Now, Acura has officially announced that it will be unveiling the 2011 TSX Sport Wagon at the New York Auto Show at the end of this month, with the first examples hitting dealerships in late fall.

In Acura's brief press release after the jump, the automaker mentions that the standard sedans make do with either a 201-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder or the recently introduced 280-hp, 3.5-liter V6, both of which are only available in front-wheel drive form. Unfortunately, Acura has yet to confirm which engine/drivetrain configuration will be available in the Sport Wagon, but we're holding a candle for the RDX's 240-hp, turbocharged 2.3-liter four pot and Acura's SH-AWD system. However, we have a sneaking suspicion that our (and your) preferred powertrain combo isn't a possibility, so that candle may burn our hands by the time the TSX Sport Wagon debuts in the Big Apple.

Report: 2011 Acura TSX first in line to get hybrid powertrain

Closely following Honda CEO Takanobu Ito's admission at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month that the Acura brand would soon jump head-first into the deep end of the hybrid waters comes a report from Automotive News suggesting that the entry-level TSX sedan would be the first such model from Honda's luxury brand so equipped.

AN's source is an unnamed Acura dealer who says the hybrid technology will grace the TSX's engine bay starting in 2011. TSX not your cup of tea? Fret not. John Mendel, American Honda Motor Co. executive vice president for auto sales, says that there will be more Acura hybrid models to follow - though, for what it's worth, there won't be any V8 engines any time soon.

Ironically in light of Acura's recent addition of giant metal beaks, company spokesman Gary Robinson adds, "The idea of the big, bad luxury sedan with the shiniest grille has become a little uncouth." Robinson adds that Acura isn't in the business of "making compromises," insinuating that future cars from the automaker will combine fuel efficiency with appropriate performance and luxury.

It's best to aim high, right? While most of the automotive world (ourselves included) are busy comparing the rather wonderful Suzuki Kizashi with logical competitors like the Volkswagen Jetta - not to mention larger cars like the Honda Accord, Mazda6 and Ford Fusion - it seems the Japanese automaker itself has its sights set a bit higher... all the way up to the Audi A4 and Acura TSX, point of fact.

Called the "Kizashi Test Drive Challenge" incentive program, Suzuki is offering sport sedan buyers $100 if they test drive the Kizashi first and still end up purchasing either a 2010 Audi A4 2.0T or four-cylinder 2010 Acura TSX within 10 days of the test drive. The program ends runs through January 31, 2010. Says Koichi Suzuki, executive vice president of American Suzuki Automotive Operations:

In the luxury segment, Acura has always been a bit of a lost puppy: Tempting to bring home and full of rewards to the owner who does, but never quite sure of where it is or where it's supposed to be. Over the past few years, Acura dealerships across North America - at the behest of Acura itself - have spent big bucks constructing glitzy new showrooms in anticipation of new products coming down the pipeline that would be capable of competing with other big luxury marques. But those heavily-invested franchises may find themselves holding their hats as the premium Honda division is changing its course again, and in the interim will be delaying significant model launches.

Part of the shift in strategy for Acura - which still markets exclusively in North America and China - is to put the final nail in the coffin for a rear-drive platform and V8 engines, two components seen as vital for going toe-to-toe with the European brands. Instead, Acura will reportedly focus on a more sensible approach to luxury vehicles during a "low-growth period" of new models, returning to the entry-level luxury segment to combat the likes of the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3, along with luxury hybrids. But it'll take the Japanese automaker a good few years to remake itself, and in the meantime sales are likely to continue declining as the TSX sport wagon (nee Honda Accord Tourer) and the new ZDX crossover (low-volume models both) hold down the fort as the only new arrivals in the pipeline.

When we polled you yesterday afternoon about whether Honda was right in choosing to build the insurrectionary 2010 Accord Crosstour instead of picking the Accord Touring from its overseas showrooms, we didn't know that Acura was going to announce that it was doing just that today. Honest. In fact, as far as we're concerned, you guys made it happen. Well, 47.7% of you (at last count), anyway, as bringing over the Accord Tourer was your number one suggestion for a Honda/Acura load-lugger.

In any case, in a (very) brief press release available after the jump, Acura has announced the addition of a TSX sport wagon to its 2011 lineup, and it will likely look suspiciously like the Euro-market Accord Touring model that many people have been clamoring for. Acura confirms that the model will be based on the TSX sedan, which is itself basically a Euro Accord. It is unclear which powertrains we'll get, or if styling will be tweaked from its European counterpart, but it is expected to arrive next fall. Color us excited.

Now, about that JDM Odyssey...

Consumer Reports tests fuel efficiency vs. speed; Honda Insight biggest loser

The faster you drive, the more fuel you use. Common sense, right? Absolutely, but it's still helpful to see real-life data, as you'll see by checking out the results of a recent test performed by Consumer Reports. Not all cars perform the same at various speed limits, and as you might expect, America's most fuel efficient models are also the vehicles most affected by higher speeds.

A total of seven vehicles were tested by CR: a Acura TSX with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder; a new 2010 Honda Insight; a Lexus RX350; a Mercury Mountaineer with 4.6-liter V8; Toyota Camry and RAV4 with 2.5-liter four-bangers; and a Yaris with a 1.5-liter four.

As you're probably aware, today's hybrids are optimized for high fuel economy at city speeds and therefore lose much of their miserly ways on the highway. As it turns out, this was especially true of the new Insight hybrid, which lost over 15 miles per gallon moving the needle from 55 mph to 75 mph - the largest drop in the contest. The 2010 Acura TSX V6 is something of a consolation prize. At the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Acura showed off a new 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel and said it would launch in the U.S. this year. A few months later in New York, Honda's luxury arm showed off the all-new second generation TSX sedan, and we expected to be driving the culmination of the two right around now.

Unfortunately, a confluence of events a few months after the TSX was shown caused Acura to reverse course and put the diesel engine on the shelf. As world oil prices hit all time record levels, the never ending construction in China and Dubai seemed to be consuming the entire world supply of diesel, driving prices higher and higher. At about the same time, the world came to the realization that loaning money to people who couldn't pay it back might not be a great idea after all. With sales in the toilet everywhere, Acura decided that throwing a gasoline-powered V6 into the TSX might be a better idea. Was it?
