As far as we're concerned, there will always be a market for sporty vintage-styled machinery like the Triumph Thruxton. After all, not everyone needs 150 horsepower and 200 mile-per-hour top speeds to have a good time on two wheels, and few motorcycles possess the kind of style that Hinckley bakes into its line of modern classics.

This is especially true of the new 2010 Thruxton SE, which gets a Crystal White paint job on the tins with a single red stripe and a matching red powdercoated frame. Completing the package is a small flyscreen, black engine cases and a smattering of appropriate decals.

There aren't any changes to the sportiest Bonnie's 865cc parallel-twin powerplant, which puts out a claimed 68 horsepower and 51 lb-ft of torque. While we'd gladly take at least a little power boost, if we were in the market for such a bike the Thruxton SE would certainly be on our short list.

Triumph and TAG Heuer have joined forces to create a one-of-a-kind Bonneville Heuer motorcycle. Inspired by Steve McQueen and the Porsche 917 K that the famous actor, racer and motorcycle rider piloted in the classic film Le Mans, the Bonneville Heuer is painted up in the classic Gulf Oil blue and orange scheme and will be used for promotional purposes.

McQueen famously wore a Heuer Monaco watch in the aforementioned silver screen race drama and was a renowned Triumph enthusiast. Says Neil Morley, Triumph's Head of Brand Communications:

We are delighted to play our part in this exciting project. The Triumph Bonneville and TAG Heuer Monaco are both timeless masterpieces, celebrating their respective 50th and 40th anniversaries this year. We also both have a natural connection with Steve McQueen, who famously wore a Monaco watch in the film Le Mans and was renowned for his love of our bikes, making this a very natural collaboration.

As much as we'd like to tell you this will be an optional color choice for the production Bonneville, that's not currently the case. If you like it as much as we do, perhaps a phone call to your local Triumph dealer is in order.

2010 Triumph Rocket III Roadster - Click above for high-res image gallery

Just in case the original Triumph Rocket III and its 2.3-liter inline triple engine wasn't quite bonkers enough for you, the British motorcycle manufacturer has just announced it's upping the power of its awe-inspiring mill for the 2010 model year. The 165 lb-ft of torque represents a 15% improvement over the 2009 model, and that plateau is reached at just 2,750 rpm.

Couple that foundation-wrenching pulling power with 146 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and a reported 807-pound wet weight and you've got yourself a laudable power-to-weight ratio. Fortunately, Triumph has also seen fit to update the Rocket's suspension and brake components to match the newfound grunt. A new set of 43-millimeter upside-down forks join twin Kayaba shocks to keep the big bike under control and updated Brembo brakes are paired up with Triumph's proven ABS system.

On the styling side of the coin, Triumph will paint the new 2010 Rocket in any color you'd like... just so long as it's black. Hey, don't complain - you do get the choice of either glossy or matte finish, and don't forget about that engine! Rounding out the updates are twin chrome silencers and a reconfigured riding position with a shorter reach to the handlebars and slightly more rearset footpegs. We'll take ours in, um, black.

We couldn't possibly meander our way through the field of classic machinery at the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance without pointing our DSLR lenses in the direction of the beautiful collection of motorcycles gathered on the grounds of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. This year, British twin-cylinder motorcycles were one of the special features of the show, and all of the usual suspects were out in full force.

Scroll through our gallery below to see meticulously restored Triumphs, BSAs, Nortons (including this nice John Player replica), AJSs and Royal Enfields. Looking a bit deeper into some of the more rarified air, we stumbled upon a Vincent or two, along with a bike from Jay Leno's British brand of choice, Brough Superior. We even managed to snap off a few shots of a 1950 Douglas, which mounted its horizontally-opposed cylinders in the opposite direction of the better known format from BMW.

Gallery: Meadow Brook Concours 2009: The Motorcycles

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Chris Shunk / Sam Abuelsamid / Max Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Meadow Brook Concours 2009: The Motorcycles originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 12:33:00 EST.
2009 Triumph Daytona 675SE - Click above for a high-res image gallery

For whatever reason, most major motorcycle brands can be identified by a specific color. For instance, Honda is red and Kawasaki is green. Over the years, both Yamaha and Suzuki have been associated with particular colors too, though those two cycle manufacturers have flip-flopped a few times. We have an unsolicited suggestion for classic British manufacturer Triumph: stick with the white and blue scheme that's about to debut on the new Daytona 675SE. It's perfect.

Triumph says the bike's Pearl White bodywork and Sparkle Blue frame were "designed to enhance the British bike's sleek and slender profile." Mission accomplished. Underneath the new livery lies the same 126-horsepower, 675cc inline three-cylinder engine that every Datyona comes standard with and was mildly refined for the 2009 model year.

If you want one, we suggest you get in touch with your local Triumph dealer post haste. "Less than 350" SEs are planned for the North American market, and pricing begins at $9,999 in the U.S. and $11,999 in Canada.

Gallery: 2009 Triumph Daytona Special Edition

[Source: Triumph]
Triumph unveils Daytona 675 Special Edition, we fawn originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 May 2009 09:58:00 EST. Kicking off what is expected to be an annual focus on different countries and eras, this year's display will highlight classic British bikes built until 1959.

Included among the entry list of classic Triumphs, Nortons, Velocettes, BSAs, Brough Superiors and Ariels will be a pair of Vincents that are legendary among vintage motorbike enthusiasts. "Gunga Din" was a 1947 factory demonstration prototype that became one of the most indomitable racing bikes of its time, while the "Bathing Suit Bike" (pictured above) got its name when rider Rolland "Rollie" Free rode it - lying down like Superman to reduce drag - to a 150mph Bonneville land speed record in 1948 wearing nothing but a speedo, cap and a pair of sneakers.

Organizers say the introduction of the new category comes in response to increased interest towards bike collecting and the vital role which many early motorcycles played in the development of the automobile. Sounds good to us...we'll be on hand to check them out and bring you the best this August from Monterey, California.

[Source: Octane]
Something Old, Something New: Pebble Beach to include motorcycles for the first time originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Apr 2009 14:28:00 EST. We are a bit surprised, though, by how plain-looking the bike is, appearing very much like a modern Bonneville injected with <strike>steroids</strike> performance enhancing drugs. With its blacked-out liquid cooled parallel engine, the bike bares a passing resemblance to Kawasaki's rather ancient Vulcan 500 model... not good. In any case, we are counting on competitive performance from the rather large 1600cc engine, which should offer somewhat more than a hundred horses. Considering just how massive the shove one gets from Triumph's Rocket III cruiser, we have high hopes for this new cruiser mill.

Rumors indicate that more variations on this basic Thunderbird theme will come out of the woodwork in due time, including the now-expected touring model. All models will likely share the same basic frame, engine and six speed gearbox. ABS is said to be optional. We look forward to seeing more shots of the new Thunderbird, hopefully ones that show the bike in a bit better light.

Gallery: 2010 Triumph Thunderbird

[Source: Triumph]
Triumph introduces new 2010 Thunderbird originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 10:21:00 EST. Each year, they release their awards, which recognize both greatness and serious lapses in judgment. After the members vote, those results are tallied and then the public gets a crack at it, too. The results are sometimes a bit surprising, but always interesting and worth a look. This year, the big winner for Best Motorcycle goes to Triumph for the Street Triple 675. Surprisingly, after sweeping the International Bike of the Year awards, Ducati's awesome new 1098 didn't even appear in the top three. Suzuki's new B-King managed to begrudgingly accept the award as Worst New Motorcycle, with Honda's latest CBR1000RR taking the tarnished silver medal. There is a rather large gap right now in between their Bonneville line and the monster Rocket III. Spy shots seem to indicate that this missing link will soon be found in the form of a liquid-cooled parallel twin-powered cruiser. Although our only photo evidence is the grainy image on the right, we can clearly see that a styling link exists between the Bonneville retro-bike and this new machine, which some are suggesting will be known as the "Speed Twin".

Rumors that the engine will fall somewhere around 1700cc and punch out triple horsepower and torque figures. If you are interested in the idea of a Triumph Big Twin to compete with Harley and the metric brands, get your checkbook ready for what will likely be a 2009 model year launch.

With government fuel economy and emissions standards tightening both in the US and abroad, BMW, like other carmakers, is being forced to develop more earth-conscious vehicles to offset the fire-breathing monsters from their M division and the behemoths from Rolls-Royce.

The answer may be to go after arch-rival Daimler's smart brand, but rather than going super-modern, BMW is tipped to design its line-up of city cars around a retro theme. Isetta, which made tiny commuter cars in the 50's, has been touted as one strong possibility, more likely than the prospect of reviving Triumph into a smart rival when its roots are in roadsters. We reported on the Isetta rumor back in November, but according to AutoExpress, development of the new city-car is officially underway. Whatever badge the new BMW city cars would wear, insiders suggest that motivation would come from small turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines, while hybrids would be reserved for SUVs and other larger vehicles.

Originally intended as a tribute to the 40th anniversary of Evel Knievel's unforgettable Caesar's Palace jump, U.K. bike dealer Jack Lilley has created a special edition of Triumph's on-and-off-road Scrambler. The choice of motorcycle makes sense because that original jump some 40 years ago was done aboard a Triumph T120 Bonneville. Although the project was started before his death, it has taken on new meaning now that the legendary stunt-man has passed and is a tribute to more than just that one jump. According to the dealership, the bike "is based on a Scrambler and has a superb paint job along with short front mudguard, Thruxton seat and hump, chrome engine cases, red cam cover and other small details." The one-off tribute bike will be sold with a signed picture of the man himself in mid-jump and will command a few thousand extra over the base price of the Scrambler. Um... yeah, and we want one.

England has an illustrious history of producing beautiful motorized transportation. Unfortunately, many of the Queen's car companies are either in big trouble, or they have gone the way of the Dodo. The Triumph car company made beautiful cars, but by the early 80s Triumph was associated only with unreliability and re-badged Rovers and Hondas.

Back in 1994, BMW purchased the Rover group, which included Land Rover, Mini, MG, and Triumph, among others. While Rover, Land Rover, and MG ended poorly, Mini has been a gold mine. Auto Express is reporting that the German automaker is now looking into breathing life into the famed Triumph name, and we're all for it. Imagine BMW engineering coupled with Triumph styling; that's one well-heeled couple. An additional marque could add volume to BMW while bringing down the cost of shared parts, and if BMW could manage to keep Triumph styling alive like it did for Mini, the top brass in Munich would be dizzy from cartwheels.

By playing off the retro-chic invasion started with the new MINI, Kranz maintains that there is a place for Triumph, specifically a small, rear-wheel drive ride that could continue the legacy of TRs and Spitfires from the past.

Using the existing platform that underpins the 1-series and selling Triumph at the scores of MINI dealers seems entirely plausible. BMW's got the technology and incorporating Triumph into the MINI's network could ensure dealer profitability into the future. Plus, BMW already owns the name. Either a Spitfire or TR revival could slot in nicely between the MINI and the Z4, but the only rub is that exact niche is where the new 128i and 135i plans to do battle. Expansion is one thing, but brand cannibalization is another - something that's not addressed in Kranz's column.

[Source: Automotive News, sub. req'd]
BMW's fourth brand: Triumph FTW! originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Sep 2007 16:26:00 EST.
GoWheel brings you an electric motorbike that's going to cost you some money, but it looks and goes just like the real thing. Almost. Starting with a Triumph Daytona, the folks at Go replace the inline DOHC 3-cylinder with a li-ion battery pack that adds 100-190 pounds depending on how many batteries you want. The bike still gets to 60 in 2.9 seconds, and will cruise at 93 mph for 143 highway miles or 49 miles of hard street use. As this whole electric thing gathers steam -- no pun intended -- it's nice to see more and more rides that look like their fire-powered equivalents. But for now, there are always caveats: the bike isn't DOT approved, and it sports an enormous Plexiglas fairing to improve aero efficiency that looks more like a giant shield. And one more thing -- if the bike ever gets made, it will cost you $77,000 to ride in silence.

The three-week journey will cover two deserts, five mountain ranges and an untold number of countries with the <strike>winners</strike> survivors finding themselves in the scenic Mongolian capitol, Ulaan Bataar.

Aside from all the challenges that will inevitably present themselves along the way, probably the greatest obstacles are the vehicles mandated for the event. All four-wheeled machines are limited to 1 liter of displacement, while the two-wheeled contenders are allowed to max out at 125cc. The vehicles are chosen as much for their quirkiness as they are for their road going prowess and while certain modifications are allowed, heavily adapted vehicles can be subject to fines.

You can follow the progress of the teams, see the five recommended routes and check out the charities the Mongol Rally will be benefiting at their site www.mongolrally.com.

[Thanks to Christian for the tip!]
Mongol Rally: It's the journey, not the destination originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Jul 2006 13:03:00 EST.
With gas prices so high these days, a little levity pump-side is hard to come by. Thankfully, there's Pumpcast, an interactive gag catching motorists while they fill up their tanks and empty out their wallets. This video stems NBC's Tonight Show hosted by car buff Jay Leno, and features a number of segments in which customers are addressed directly by a fake newscaster. Sadly, Conan O'Brien regular Triumph The Insult Comic Dog is nowhere to be found. Enjoy it regardless.
