Fifty-two-year-old Briton Roy Locock decided to drive around the world to benefit charity. A circumnavigating spin behind the wheel is almost passe these days, but Locock's choice of wheels certainly isn't: a 1977 MG Midget. He bought the car -- named Bridget -- in 2006, and after taking it on a tour of Spain and Italy, began a restoration. Not long afterward he figured Bridget needed to get out and see some things.

He's been on the road now for well over a year, going from Oxford, England to Chennai, India, then taking a boat down to Australia for a drive entirely around that country, then hopping a boat to Argentina and driving due north, and now he's in Canada. His company all this time has been himself, five-days of emergency rations, two 20-liter gas cans, and a car with 3.5 inches of ground clearance. Oh, and fortitude. Lots of that.

Locock's driving to benefit UNICEF, and you can read all about the adventures on the blog he is still updating. Bridget does like to provide her own mechanical adventures -- she is an MG, after all -- but the fact that she has covered almost 30,000 miles so far has to count for something. Good luck on the rest of your trip, Mr. Locock.

Click above for gallery of shots from the book Driven Together

Driving an Aston Martin V8 Vantage over the Asian Highway to promote highway safety strikes us as, if not the least safe thing we can think of, certainly dubious. Yet the Project 30,000 car piloted by Britons Richard Meredith and Phil Colley made the trek safely, albeit with quite a few adventures along the way: a cattle stampede, border hassles in Turkmenistan, and a sandstorm in China. And that road you see in the picture above is apparently what they call a "detour" in certain parts of the world. Yeah. The book of the journey, Driven Together, will come out late next month. To whet your appetite, check out the gallery of photos below, or if you can't wait, head over to Mercury Books now and pre-order a copy at a discount.

Gallery: Driven Together Book

[Source: Mercury Books]
The story of the Vantage that crossed Asia finally finished originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 19:00:00 EST.
Tucked away in a green, waterfall-riven valley between Akureyri and Husavik, Iceland is the hamlet of Ystafell (who-stuh-fel is the closest we can get to proper pronunciation). Akureyri has some of the best nightlife in Iceland, while Husavik has whales and a museum dedicated to things unmentionable on a family site. That leaves the Transport Museum at Ystafell practically unnoticed, which is a shame, because features two barns full of unlikely vehicles, each with an authentic Icelandic story. Follow the jump for the tale of our recent visit, and check out the gallery of hi-res photos below.

Gallery: Transport Museum Ystafell

Continue reading The cars of Ystafell: vintage Icelandic metal

The cars of Ystafell: vintage Icelandic metal originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 19:28:00 EST. Huzzah! Not only does the fluting on the bags echo the fluting on your Arnage's seats, but the luggage trim is done in knurled aluminum. The entire set consists of a briefcase, large and small suitcases, a washbag, and a weekend bag. You can expect to pay £4,300, before options. But then, if you're an Arnage owner, you're probably more concerned with finding out if you can get leather to match your seats.
If you're looking for the ultimate vacation and have the cash to spend, look no further than Red Travel. The stuff-that-dreams-are-made-of tour operator based in Turin specializes in putting together vacation packages that put you behind the wheel of a Ferrari to drive along the Italian countryside, with a variety of options to suit your taste.

Itineraries range from one day to eight, hitting such locations as Rome, Florence, Maranello, Sicily, Venice and Lake Como. You can opt for more countryside or more metropolitan destinations and the packages are completely flexible according to your specifications, even including trips outside Italy to London, Barcelona, Monte Carlo... the open road's the limit. Your own personal concierge will even follow (or forge ahead) by GPS with your bags.

Red Travel's fleet isn't made up of older machinery, either. Their garage is stocked with F430s (coupe and roadster), the brand-new 599 GTB Fiorano and the four-seat 612 Scaglietti. It's by no means a cheap way to travel, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a more memorable one. A four-day trip for two in a Ferrari from Rome to Siena and back runs ?4300 each (approximately $5,700), plus a deposit on the car of ?15,000 which you get back when you return the car intact.

You might think that Europe has the market cornered on scenic drives, what with its old world charm, looming castles, rolling vineyards and ancient ruins.

The folks at MSN Travel, however, think that the United States has some pretty drives as well, and in honor of the days being ripe for road trips, they've narrowed the list down to their top 10 faves.

Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and North Carolina starts the list off with nature at its best, Highway 1 in California is thrown in there as an obvious choice, and the drive through Sonoma and Napa Valley could give the French countryside a run for its money.

But what about the roads less traveled? Not to disappoint, the article includes drives like Seward Valley through Resurrectoin Bay to Anchorage in Alaska, as well as Going to the Sun Road through Montana's Glacier National Park.

Technology is also made or, in this case, programmed by people.

Drivers using GPS navigation inthe English village of Crackpot (killer name for a town, BTW) are often being guided by such devices to the top of a30-metre (over 98 feet) cliff. The directional glitch forces drivers of everything from cars to buses to big trucks toturn around perilously close to the cliff's edge. Predictably, though, sometimes the vehicle gets stuck. Says CarolPorter, who farms in Crackpot, "When they get grounded on the small boulders, we're having to go up there in thetractor and pull them out."

[Source: Cape Times]
"At the next boulder, turn right off cliff" originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Apr 2006 19:04:00 EST. Instead of relying on information culled from the Internet, travel guides or tours, orfriends up in the Great White North, GPS Tour Guide has another option: GyPSy Guide.

A handheldcomputer the size of the calculator, GyPSy monitors your location via GPS as you drive. When you near an attraction orpoint of interest, the computer speaks through your vehicle's FM stereo, providing information about the location, history, and even anecdotes. Says Jonathan Bulich of GPS Tour Guide, "They (tourists) don't need to tell it toplay. There's no interaction. It just knows where you are." Note that suction cups are available to attach GyPSyin the vehicle.

Electronic "tour guides" using GPS are notthing new, but most are limited inknowledge and coverage. GyPSy Guide covers points of interests in most of Western Canada, Whistler and Victoria.

Most regular tour companies and guides are nonplussed about GyPSy.

"A guided tour offersa lot more things," says Ms Winnie Yu, manager of reservations for Key West Travel & Tours. "Guides arevery knowledgeable and personable and it's not necessarily cheaper when you drive because you end up paying everythingat retail rate. In a tour company, especially the bigger ones, they get a wholesale rate and then they put togetherpackages that are cheaper."

Full information of GyPSy's coverage, languages spoken, and daily costs canbe found at the link.

[Source: Globe and Mail]
Let a GyPSy Guide give you a tour of Canada originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 01 Apr 2006 16:01:00 EST.
