Watching a small fire that no one can stop from becoming a big fire is like watching a train wreck in Super Slo-Mo. That is the spectacle we get from a rural two-lane road in Poland when a transporter truck hauling seven Volkswagen Passat wagons catches flame.

The cause appears to be some sort of tire or axle failure on the trailer that starts a small fire under one of the cars. For unknown reasons, no one among the bystanders has a fire extinguisher, so they try to put the flames out with snow. That doesn't work, and then when it takes 12 minutes for the volunteer fire department to arrive in their vintage Mercedes-Benz pump and get the first stream of water shooting - almost five minutes before the state fire department - the conflagration is big enough to cook cattle and s'mores for Zeus.

The transporter inferno is on the long side at 23 minutes, but you'll find it all in the video below.
Continue reading Watch bystanders try to put out fire on transporter full of new Volkswagens

Watch bystanders try to put out fire on transporter full of new Volkswagens originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Jan 2013 19:30:00 EST.
Few automakers do camper vans quite so well as Volkswagen. From factory additions to aftermarket conversions, models like the Transporter seem perfect for on-the-go living. Now a company in the UK has taken the camper conversion one step further with the Doubleback. In addition to a large pop-up roof tent, the creation boasts an expandable aft section than can increase the vehicle's length by an additional 6.5 feet. The conversion is said to add just 286 pounds to the Transporter, and the mechanism expands in under 45 seconds to nearly double living space. Unfortunately, you'll be splitting all that extra room between you and only one other friend. The swap nixes all but the front two seats.

If this all sounds familiar, it certainly should. We first caught a glimpse of the Doubleback a month ago, but the company has released a few videos showing exactly how the conversion works here in the real world. With a load rating of 1,323 pounds with the legs extended, the structure is engineered to sleep even the biggest boned campers out there. Unfortunately, snagging one will cost you. Look to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $87,975 for the Doubleback if you like what you see. Scroll below to check out the videos for yourself.
Continue reading VW Transporter Doubleback slides into production

VW Transporter Doubleback slides into production originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 May 2012 15:00:00 EST.
We're big fans of the Volkswagen bus, from the original Type 2 and its descendants, to the Vanagon that replaced it, and even the front-drive Eurovan. While VW hasn't sold one of these in the U.S. since it discontinued the Eurovan in 2003, the rest of the world has enjoyed the Transporter T5 for the past decade. The VWs are immensely popular camper vans in Europe (especially those with pop-top roofs), and the novel Doubleback conversion shown above takes the formula to another level.

With an electric, slide-out rear pod similar to what you find on many modern RVs, the Doubleback can extend a Transporter by an additional six-and-a-half feet, offering an entire rear bedroom. The company says the extra room adds only 286 pounds to the vehicle's curb weight and extends in under 45 seconds. The conversion eliminates any rear seating, so your camper will be a two-seater, or you can get a front bench installed to fit an extra passenger in the middle.

At today's exchange rates, the Doubleback sells for about $87,975, including British taxes, or the company can convert your vehicle. Be sure to check out the photo gallery to see more of this cool bus.
The Doubleback fits a big RV into a small space originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 31 Mar 2012 14:02:00 EST.
Chrysler has had its fair share of troubles with transport companies of late, but a reported plan to switch to non-union delivery could make for even more labor headaches down the road. Bloomberg reports that United Auto Workers boss Bob King will stand behind the Teamsters in the event Chrysler attempts to eliminate one of the country's longest-standing unions from its car delivery business. King spoke to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters at their Las Vegas convention last month, telling the crowd that Chrysler was planning to buy $5 million worth of transport trucks to give to a non-union company. King then went on to assure the Teamsters that the UAW was behind them, adding "We're going to fight together to make that 100 percent union, 100 percent Teamster."

While automakers rarely (if ever) look for union troubles, this potential rift could have especially bad timing. Chrysler and other domestic automakers enter talks with the UAW on a new labor contract later this month. The new contracts will be the first since General Motors and Chrysler exited bankruptcy and the UAW is expected to try to win back some concessions made over the past few years.
UAW's King upset with Chrysler plan to buy non-union transporters originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 13:00:00 EST.
The Transporter film series is taking a detour from the silver-screen to arrive in TV land. Called - crazily enough - Transporter, the new Cinemax series stars a man who is <strike>not Jason Statham</strike> quite good at ... transporting. Lead actor Chris Vance's preferred method of transportation will reportedly be the redesigned Audi A8, which we think should fit the bill quite nicely. After all, a 372-horsepower, 4.2-liter V8 paired with Quattro all-wheel-drive, excellent seats and a 1,400-watt B&O sound system should be enough to keep driver, passengers and cargo moving along quickly and comfortably.

Of course, were we the appropriately named Transporter in question, we might wait for Audi to hand over the next S8. How about you - What would be your preferred tool for the Transporter gig? Have your say in Comments.
Audi A8 to star in new Transporter TV series originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Jul 2011 09:30:00 EST. While pickup trucks are the workhorses on this side of the Atlantic, across the pond their duties are typically assumed by full-size vans. So it should only follow that, just like we have performance pickups here like the Ford F-150 Raptor and the Ram Runner, so do the Europeans get the occasional sporty van to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Ford once more leads the charge with the Transit SportVan, but not to be outdone, Volkswagen has launched a sporty van as well.

Called the Transporter Sportline, the special edition van packs a 180-horsepower 2.0-liter turbodiesel, mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG. The package is rounded out by such unique touches as a revised front end with gloss black and chrome grille, smoked headlights and integrated fog lamps, polished side step bars and 18-inch 5-spoke alloys. The lamps are smoked in the rear as well, and higher up there's a roof spoiler.

The interior is decked out in two-tone leather and all the electronic bells and whistles. In addition to the transmission options, buyers can opt for a short or long wheelbase and either windowed passenger configuration or cargo panel van. Prices start at £28,220 in the UK.
Volkswagen rolls out slick Transporter Sportline van in the UK originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 May 2011 08:29:00 EST.
Need to carry multiple cars across a long distance in one shot? What if the amount of cars you want to carry exceeds the capacity for your standard automotive transport truck? China apparently has a solution, and it comes in the form of a dual-deck transporter, which is capable of carrying cars side-by-side on its upper load level.

This unconventional piece of heavy machinery was caught on film and it appears almost majestic in the way it rumbles down the road, but we're quite sure we don't want to be driving around it when it takes a corner with an excess of speed. Hop the jump to watch a short clip of this beast in action.

Need to transport a lot of people or stuff overseas? You could do worse than the Volkswagen Transporter. Need to take a lot of people or stuff off road? Then you'll need this: the Transporter Rockton 4Motion.

The go-anywhere van from Volkswagen's Commercial Vehicles division packs a 4th-generation Haldex all-wheel drive system with a locking rear differential and a 1.2-inch ride-height boost over the standard Transporter. Heavy-duty springs and damper help it carry over three metric tons of payload, while a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine with either 138 or 178 horsepower does the pushing/pulling duties through a six-speed manual transmission.

There's a more extreme Expedition package available straight from the factory with 16-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, a heftier transmission and a heavy-duty floor-rail system for variable seat and cargo configurations. Details in the press release after the jump, along with the high-resolution images in the gallery below.

Want to start your own Formula One team? There's space on the grid next season since USF1 failed to make it this year, and we wish you better luck. But it takes more than luck to start a team from scratch. It takes a lot of know-how, a lot of money, and a lot of equipment. That's where this auction comes in.

About half of the grand prix races on the calendar are based in Europe, so when they're not flying around the world to far-off destinations, F1 teams spend a lot of time on the road. That's why the spec out their own trailers, to shuttle their personnel and equipment from track to track across the old continent. When USF1 was gearing up for their ill-fated endeavor, they bought a pair of trailers from the World Champion Brawn GP team (having apparently been used by the Honda team beforehand) before they evidently got new ones through their acquisition by Mercedes-Benz.

The trailers - which were supposed to be repainted in red, white and blue - never made it that far in USF1's hands. The team ultimately shut down, and this pair of trailers was seized by the courts in the UK. Now the local sheriff's department has put them up for sale on eBay Motors. They come equipped with all the bells and whistles, including place for three race cars, elevator platforms to unload them engineering offices, generators, on-board metal lathe milling machine...the works. They don't, however, come with the tractors to pull them, or the cars they're meant to transport...or a matching Bugatti Veyron for that matter. Reportedly worth some £300,000 (nearly half a million dollars) apiece when new, each is selling without reserve to the highest bidder, with current bid prices at the time of writing standing at £16,100 ($25k) and £12,900 ($20k) respectively. Check 'em out in the auction listing for all the details. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

We never thought we'd see the day when someone would have to sweeten the deal to sell a car as eminently desirable as a Bugatti Veyron. But with the economy still putt-putting its way down the road to recovery, there are plenty of wealthy collectors looking to free up some liquid assets. That means a buyer's market, so we wouldn't be surprised to see everything this side of the proverbial kitchen sink thrown in to seal the deal.

This, however, looks far more enticing than a porcelain fixture. The owner of this Veyron - monochromatically decked out in French Racing Blue - apparently had this Mercedes-Benz Atego transporter painted to match. As you can see from the photo, the truck's precious-cargo box tilts back and a ramp slides out to get the supercar in with a minimum of fuss.

Oh, and the Bugatti itself? It's a 2007 model with 7,728 kilometers (4,800 miles) on the odometer, a matching dark blue interior and, together with the matching truck, is up for grabs on JamesList from the Netherlands with a €895,000 ($1,264,815) price tag.
It not only shows off more of Statham's body and his 1-liner prowess, it also shows off more bad dialogue, more absurd stunts, and more reasons why it's Crank but with a bracelet and an Audi. It will clearly be a movie where you put your brain down in the seat next to you and then load up on greasy popcorn and root beer with wide-eyed glee. But that doesn't mean we won't see it. Check out the trailer after the jump, and mark your calendars for November 26.

[Source: Transporter 3 Blog]
Continue reading VIDEO: Transporter 3 trailer #2 shows more Audi A8 co-star

VIDEO: Transporter 3 trailer #2 shows more Audi A8 co-star originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 12 Oct 2008 17:32:00 EST. The second one was an absurd little romp. This third installment, befitting a director whose last name is Megaton, has absolutely overdosed on the outlandish. But apparently you've all spoken by making the first two profitable, and this is what you want. The plot in the third film is like John Woo redid Crank, but with a detonating bracelet and an Audi. And as much as we dig Jason Statham, if he doesn't hit the brakes soon he's on his way to becoming the pauper's Nicholas Cage. Or the rich man's Steven Segal, which might not be so bad... Follow the jump to check out the trailer. Thanks for the tip, JP!

[Source: Trailer Addict]
Continue reading VIDEO: Transporter 3 trailer debuts, could be worse than Transporter 2

VIDEO: Transporter 3 trailer debuts, could be worse than Transporter 2 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Aug 2008 18:29:00 EST. However, few were probably amused when a pair of the brand-new Korean sedans took a leap from a transporter. We don't know many details other than the incident occurred somewhere in South Korea. Of course, we don't consider this incident extremely newsworthy, but as a blog we do find these automotive-related human errors with expensive aftermaths rather fascinating. Keep 'em coming.

Clarkson finds the van "jolly big," with enough room up front to sit three with their load of chicken feed. But it's the Transporter's speed that gives him an inkling as to what it must be like to drive a quick American truck: 0 to 62 in 12.2 seconds, all in a chrome-wheeled vehicle too big for most parking spaces. (Umm... if you think the VeeDub's fast, Jer-- we've got something in a Dodge Ram SRT-10 to show you)

Would he buy one? Weeehl... no. Clarkson sees no other purpose for the van after dropping off his purchases. More chicken feed for us, then.

[Source: Times Online]
Clarkson finds the soul of America's trucks... in a Volkswagen van? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Jun 2006 13:06:00 EST.
