General Motors is recalling a total of 67,414 sedans in Canada for power steering failures. The campaign covers 2005, 2006 and 2008 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx models as well as Pontiac G6 vehicles. The 2008 Saturn Aura is also included in the recall. Transport Canada says while power steering may fail, drivers will still be able to maintain control of their vehicle with additional steering effort. Owners will be notified of the failure by a chime and an illuminated warning light on the instrument panel.

Neither GM nor Transport Canada is saying what causes the failures, though the automaker has agreed to replace the steering column in 2005 and 2006 models, while 2008 vehicles will receive new power steering motor control modules. You can view the complete recall notice from Transport Canada below for more information. It is unclear whether or not U.S. vehicles will see a similar recall.
Continue reading GM recalling 67k Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura models in Canada

GM recalling 67k Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura models in Canada originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Oct 2012 15:45:00 EST.
A minor but important problem with the sensors in the self-diagnostic software used by the Safety Restraint System (SRS) system in some Mitsubishi i-MiEV models has led to a recall notice from Transport Canada and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall affects 49 vehicles in Canada and 261 in the States. According to NHTSA, "incompatibility between the air bag sensors and the self-diagnostic software may deactivate the frontal and side airbag system."

As a result, "the side and curtain air bags may not deploy in a crash for which those air bags were intended to deploy, increasing the risk of personal injury to the vehicle occupants." And that's a bad thing. See recall notices for both Canada and the United States below.
Continue reading Mitsubishi i-MiEV recalled for air bag safety issue

Mitsubishi i-MiEV recalled for air bag safety issue originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Aug 2012 10:01:00 EST.
According to the CBC, the Canadian province of Quebec is saying "No way, Jose" to importing right-hand drive cars for six months. Even though there are 3,000 RHD cars on the roads and none of them have been faulted for anything, the province's insurance board wants to investigate the safety of such vehicles. The official line is that "they don't always meet Transport Canada safety standards." Perhaps the genuine reason will be known soon, but we're guessing that safety nannies will point to their comparative danger when passing vehicles on single-lane roads.

For now, the board is going to consult accident reports and ask around before lifting the ban. No more Japanese gray imports for you Quebecois in the meantime.
This halving of the standard would bring the Canadian testing in line with the regulations of both Europe and the U.S. Apparently, Transport Canada believes that vehicles would be cheaper to import while maintaining automobile safety. In fact, Canadian officials believe that the new standard could actually improve pedestrian safety. Or not, according to the IIHS, which has sent a letter to Transport Canada urging them to reconsider making the change. The IIHS response is pretty scathing, Using words and phrases like "unsubstantiated, incorrect assumptions, ill-informed and misleading," but the response could seemingly be summed up this way: Yo hosers, what were you thinking, eh? Thanks for the tip, Karen!

[Source: Auto North]
IIHS warns Canada against merging bumper standards with U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Apr 2008 18:33:00 EST. The device utilizes GPS and a speed limit map coupled with technology that caps a vehicle's top speed based on the legal speed of the road being traveled. Once the vehicle arrives at the predetermined speed limit, the device makes it very difficult to go any faster. For now, Canada is looking to slap this stingy speed governor on the vehicles of perpetual speeders and reckless drivers, but the technology could one day be used for all drivers. Lovely.

Luckily for drivers here in the States, a strict speed limit governor is just un-American, and legislators know it would be <strike>very unpopular</strike> politically suicidal to implement. Still, we're sure there'd still be some people willing to embrace technology like this. Heck, a lot of parents of 16 to 18 year-olds probably wouldn't mind purchasing this device to keep their teenagers in check.

[Source: Winding Road]
Transport Canada to implement speed limiting device originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 09 Feb 2008 17:30:00 EST.
