If you've noticed a disturbing lack of dash cam in your life, our friends at sister site Translogic have just the thing for you. They've worked up a quick play-by-play for how to turn your GoPro Hero3 into a go-anywhere camera to record everything that goes on in front of your vehicle.

The steps are as simple as drilling small hole in the camera's water proof case to allow access to the USB charging port. From there, you can supply constant power through a 12-volt USB adapter. Mount the camera to your windshield using the suction mount and you're very nearly ready to go.

Next, set up the loop recording feature and you're good to go. The Hero3 can loop record in 5, 20, 60 or 120 minute files wherein it will record to the maximum time before starting a new save file. Once the memory card is full, it will record over the oldest file. It can also loop record in "maximum" mode, where the camera fills the memory card, then starts over again. Check out the video Translogic made below for a look at the finished results.
Continue reading DIY: Turn your GoPro into a 24-hour dash cam [w/video]

DIY: Turn your GoPro into a 24-hour dash cam [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 11 May 2013 09:03:00 EST.
It's a shame Carbon Motors seems to be dead on arrival. The company's E7 Police Cruiser is a purpose-built law enforcement vehicle with plenty of well-executed innovations. Rather than slather a civilian vehicle in gear and call it a day, the company engineered the E7 with law enforcement in mind from the very beginning.

Unfortunately, funding dried up before the company could really get its legs under it, and as a result, Carbon Motors has shuttered the E7 program. Before that happened, our friends at Translogic got the chance to ride along in a fully functional version of the cruiser.

Carbon Motors Vice President Stacy Dean Stephens took the time to show off all of the impressive technology available on the E7, from license plate recognition software to infrared cameras, extensive speed detection hardware and even the unique front seats built to accommodate an officer's utility belt. Check out the video below for yourself.
Continue reading Translogic takes post-mortem spin in Carbon Motors E7 police car

Translogic takes post-mortem spin in Carbon Motors E7 police car originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Apr 2013 16:57:00 EST.
Only about a week ago did the company Epic EV makes its very first delivery of the Torq Roadster to a customer. Before that, our colleagues at Translogic spent some time with company founder Chris Anthony and were the very first to get some seat time in this Morgan-Three-Wheeler-Meets-Tesla-Roadster EV.

You may recall, Chris Anthony has been involved with some some very special EVs, including the ill-fated Aptera, the DeLorean EV, the all-electric wakeboard boat and an EV ATV.

The Torq Roadster is a natural extension of his work in electrified transportation, and while somewhat spartan, keeps up nicely with the EV world's performance standard-bearer, the now-cancelled Tesla Roadster, in the performance department: 0-60 miles per hour happens in about four seconds and this very wide trike (80.5 inches) can pull 1.3G while cornering.

Watch Translogic host Bradley Hasemeyer take it for a spin below.
Continue reading Translogic test drives the Epic Torq three-wheeled EV roadster

Translogic test drives the Epic Torq three-wheeled EV roadster originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Apr 2013 19:00:00 EST.
The Translogic crew has trekked northward to Ashland, OR, to ride the epically electrified Brammo Empulse R motorcycle. With a six-speed transmission that enables both huge accelerative potential and 100+ mile per hour top speeds, as well as a maximum range of 121 miles, the Empulse R case on paper is pretty solid.

As it turns out, the case the EV bike makes for itself on the street is rock solid, too - at least that's the impression we're given from the huge smiles in the video below. Translogic also chats with Brammo CEO Craig Bramscher, and catches up with the progress of the racing team. Check it out.
Continue reading Translogic goes two-wheeling with the electric Brammo Empulse R motorcycle

Translogic goes two-wheeling with the electric Brammo Empulse R motorcycle originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 19:31:00 EST.
As we first reported last October, it appears that the Speed channel - currently offered in more than 80 million homes in North America - will likely be rebranded as Fox Sports 1 late this summer. The renaming will allow Fox to broaden the channel's focus and air content from its Major League Baseball and National Football League contracts. A more general sports format will also position Fox more aggressively against ESPN and its various sports channels.

There is no word as to what the network plans to do with Speed's 75,000 square-foot facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, but its current renovation may be part of the plan to turn it into an anchor desk for Fox Sports 1.

Pending an official announcement from Fox, there has been no mention as the to fate of Speed's automotive content - both The List and Translogic, AOL's programming, currently appear on the Speed.
Speed will be renamed Fox Sports 1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Mar 2013 09:30:00 EST. We have some exciting news to share: Speed channel will begin airing Autoblog's The List as its own half-hour television show, beginning February 5th at 10:30 PM EST and PST. The car-centric cable channel will also air half-hour episodes of our sister show, Translogic, at 10:00 PM EST and PST. Consider it the AOL Autos/Autoblog Power Hour on Speed.

We were very honored many months ago when Speed approached us about converting The List into a TV show, and couldn't be happier that its premiere, along with that of Translogic, is less than a week away. After next week's premiere, new episodes will air every Tuesday at the same time each week.

If you've been watching the show on Autoblog, these initial half-hour episodes of The List on Speed might be ones you've already seen, since the first season of the show as it appeared on the website has been deftly converted into episodes that will work on the small screen. Partnerships like this, however, as well as the show's new sponsor, Allstate, have allowed us to start shooting new episodes for the second season, all of which will debut here on Autoblog first. In fact, Jessi and Patrick are in Alaska checking off a list item as we speak.

It's great recognition for us and the show's producers at AOL Studios that Speed saw something special in The List and Translogic (this is the first time ever that AOL's premium original video content will be televised), and we're so excited to share this series that we had so much fun making with an entirely new audience. Be sure to check out the premiere this Tuesday, February 5 at 10:30 PM EST/PST!
Continue reading Set Your DVRs! Autoblog's The List to be broadcast on Speed

Set Your DVRs! Autoblog's The List to be broadcast on Speed originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 Jan 2013 15:59:00 EST.
There is nothing new about an electric skateboard (you can pick one up today at Sears or Toys 'R' Us), but the founders of ZBoard have come up with an innovative way to make electric mobility safe and easy. The ZBoard uses intuitively placed weight-sensing pads to control acceleration and braking, and Translogic recently had the chance to check one out.

Weighing in at 30 pounds, the ZBoard is powered by a 400-watt motor and a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery giving the board a 10-mile range and top speed of 17 miles per hour. The unique sensors on the Canadian maple deck allow riders to lean forward to accelerate and lean back to slow down, stop and even back up. Early prototypes used electric brakes to bring it to a stop, but after it was discovered that this caused damage to some electrical components, the design was changed to incorporate regenerative braking for better stopping and longer range.

Created by Ben Forman and Geoff Larson as a part of a mechanical engineering project, the two men expected to sell 25 boards in three months, but instead they sold that many in just three days. There are two versions of the ZBoard with the Classic going for $649 and the Pro (the model tested by Translogic) priced at $949.

While we're still holding out for the day when hoverboards become a reality, the ZBoard definitely sounds like a lot of fun. Check out how it works in the video below.
Continue reading Translogic tackles the weight-sensing ZBoard electric skateboard

Translogic tackles the weight-sensing ZBoard electric skateboard originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 12:46:00 EST.
Our sister site, AOL Autos, has been working hard all year to collect and narrow down this year's most interesting and innovative automotive technologies into six finalists for its inaugural Technology of the Year Award.

Over 30 technologies were considered across the areas of Connectivity, Active Safety and Telematics. After reviewing them all, the group has been narrowed down to six finalists by a panel of 16 judges, which includes myself and four other Autoblog editors, as well editors from Engadget and Translogic, and even Tony Fadell, the former leader of Apple's iPod team and creator of the Nest learning thermostat.

There is, however, a 17th judge, and that's you. We'd like you to cast your vote for the best new technology of 2012. When the judges reconvene next month to pick a winner, the votes cast by you and other readers will count as the seventeenth judge with the final vote to cast.

The Translogic team took some time to swing by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory recently to chat with Ann Devereaux, the deputy lead for entry, descent and landing for Curiosity, the Mars science lab. If anyone knows what it takes to to move a project like Curiosity from concept to touch down, it's her. Over the course of the quick segment on the rover program, host Bradley Hasemeyer learns about the extensive real-world testing that went into bringing the rover to life as well as the staggering amount of computer modeling it took to prepare for the rover's descent.

While the Curiosity program is only supposed to last two years, NASA is currently looking into ways to bring samples from the red planet back to Earth. That will be a substantially more ambitious project, but with the brightest minds in the field on the case, we wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility. Check out the latest Translogic episode below.
Continue reading Translogic takes a closer look at the Mars Curiosity rover

Translogic takes a closer look at the Mars Curiosity rover originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 20:00:00 EST.
The crew from Translogic seem to be on a water power kick. Not too long ago, host Bradley Hasemeyer tried his hand at a water-powered jet pack, and while cool, the machine's ridiculous price tag seems a bit out of the realm of reality for common folk.

Now Translogic has turned its attention to the FlyBoard; a water-powered contraption that uses a snowboard-like base and two hand-held nozzles. The whole contraption lands at just under $7,000 and can be operated using any jet ski. That's still pricey, but more in line with what well-to-do folk looking for a toy can shell out - plus we can now see a business case for waterfront entrepreneurs to offer pay-per-ride attractions, meaning you're probably much closer than ever before to trying out a jet pack for yourself.

Hasemeyer seems to get the hang of operating the contraption easily enough, though his short stint at the controls doesn't lend him the expertise to pull off any stunts. Still, this looks like the easiest and least-expensive way to fulfill your Iron Man fantasies here in the real world. Check out the episode below for a look.
Continue reading Translogic tries out water-jet-powered Flyboard

Translogic tries out water-jet-powered Flyboard originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 17:45:00 EST.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second-oldest motorsports event in the United States, having been contested since 1916. It's an outlier in the sanitized, corporate-sponsored world of professional racing, remaining true to its unique and local roots. The race has a long history of encouraging ingenuity and experimentation, so its not surprising that proponents of alternative fuels have long mixed it up amidst the more conventionally deployed big blocks and turbos.

But this year something special happened when course record holder and defending champion Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima showed up with an EV. Now Tajima was certainly not the first to attempt a run up the mountain under electric power, but his embrace of the technology after years of racing machines powered by internal combustion engines has to be regarded as significant. The EV movement couldn't have asked for a better public relations opportunity, which is why our sister site Translogic was there with cameras to document the occasion.

Unfortunately, Tajima's day was prematurely ended when his car caught fire. His course record was broken as well, but the former champ has promised to be back next year to give it another go with his Monster Sport E-Runner Pikes Peak Special.

BMW was one of the biggest corporate supporters of the 2012 London Olympics, earning the right to be its official car sponsor. But it wasn't just ponying up a few dozen 7 Series for the IOC that got it this plum gig. BMW made a commitment to meet specific CO2 emissions targets for the vehicles it provided.

BMW supplied about 4,000 vehicles to the London Olympics organizers, everything from motorcycles to electric Minis to hybrid 5-Series sedans to diesel X5 SUV's. Our sister site Translogic went to the Olympics to get a taste of the breadth and depth of the BMW Olympic fleet.

Too often, discussions about how best for people to get around crowded urban environments turn into an argument, with cars pitted against bicycles, highways versus public transit and improving commute times challenging pedestrian safety. But not in Austin.

In this latest episode of Translogic, our sister publication looks at how the Texas capital has embraced multimodal transportation, choosing "all of the above" rather than picking any one idea on which to hang its transportation strategy. With as rapidly as the city and surrounding region has been growing - now boasting some 1.2 million residents - the need for forward-thinking transportation planning is acute.

From wide, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks to bike lanes, car sharing to public charging stations and light rail, Austin seemingly has it all. The city isn't sitting still, either, promoting such ideas as bike lockers in office buildings with shower facilities to encourage two-wheel commuting, and getting ready to launch a bike sharing program next year. Federal money to develop a high-speed bus system will further enhance Austin's transportation alternatives.

You'd think the only partnership between BMW and Olympic athletes would come in sales and marketing. Make some appearances, shake some hands and sign a few autographs, appear in TV commercials and other advertising - that sort of stuff. But BMW's commitment to the U.S. Olympic Team stretches further than glad-handing and writing checks, as we see in this week's episode of Translogic.

Our sister site went behind the scenes at the USOC Training Center in Chula Vista, California, where BMW is using machine vision technology to help long jumpers. Similar to what BMW is developing for vehicular active safety systems, the camera system that tracks long jumpers can determine velocity in both vertical and horizontal planes by tracking the runner in three dimensions.

BMW's experimental system installed in a 5 Series does the same thing, but instead of focusing on long jumpers, it's on the lookout for pedestrians. BMW says future versions of the system would allow the car to take action to prevent pedestrian collisions.

Sometimes it seems that the rest of the country takes some sort of not-so-secret delight from Detroit's slow but steady decay. The truth is, the sprawling municipality faces a swath of unique challenges that are only compounded by a dearth of resources.

Look no further than the city's transportation infrastructure to see what we mean. Built as the ultimate temple for the car, Detroit's planners could hardly conceive of a time when residents would prefer to take public transportation. As a result, it's nearly impossible to get from the city center to the outlying suburbs without a vehicle.

But that may change sometime soon. The attitude has shifted in The D, and urban planners and business leaders are working together with a grassroots surge to get help people get where they need to go in a safe, timely and economical manner.

From light-rail proposals to efforts like the private Detroit Bus Company, Detroit is on the verge of re-imagining its public transportation infrastructure. Translogic took the time to get a feel for where Detroit is now and where it's headed in the near future. Watch the video below to check it out for yourself.
Continue reading Translogic looks at Detroit's transportation infrastructure

Translogic looks at Detroit's transportation infrastructure originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 May 2012 15:44:00 EST.
So, we think the crew at our sister site Translogic have lost their minds. Either that or they're trying to steal our jobs.

While nominally a show and blog about mobility, most weeks Translogic is discovering all manner of geeky automotive technology, while driving alternative-fuel vehicles powered by electricity, the sun, wood, or whatever crap they can find. This week, however, for the 100th show, they straight-up went to the track to drive supercars. At Disney World. Speedway.

No, that is not the world's most awesome Michigan Wolverines beer pong table. It's a million-dollar race car that's powered by the sun, and in the most recent epsiode of Translogic, our sister site visits the University of Michigan Solar Car Team to learn all about it.

The Wolverines have been racing in international solar car competitions since 1989, having built 11 cars in the past 23 years. They've won the North American Solar Challenge six times, including the last three in a row, and will be defending their title this July. The team finished third in the World Solar Challenge last year in Australia, and is currently working on a new car design for the 2013 event.

The car itself, dubbed Quantum, is a poem to minimalism, light weight and efficiency. It can run at over 100 miles per hour, thanks to its ultra-efficient, 12-horsepower, in-hub electric motor and a low curb weight of just 320 pounds.

Our sister site Translogic visits the University of Michigan in their latest episode to check out a bipedal robot named MABEL. While other similar robots like ASIMO (built by Honda), and the Partner Robots (from Toyota) have wowed crowds with their ability to walk upright, MABEL advances the technology with a complex system of springs in its knees so that its gait more resembles actual human locomotion. This enables MABEL to actually run like a human, with both "feet" leaving the ground for part of each stride.

MABEL actually set a world record for fastest two-legged machine last summer, hitting a peak pace of 6.8 miles per hour. (By comparison, ASIMO tops out at 3.7 mph.) More importantly, MABEL is able to walk and run over more than just flat terrain, as it can dynamically balance similar to a human. University of Michigan researchers say this technology may be able to help the disabled regain the ability to walk some day, or be deployed for future vehicles that don't use wheels.

Most gearheads know the Opel Ampera is the European near-twin of the Chevy Volt. There are obvious exterior differences, such as the Ampera's "boomerang" headlights and Opel badging, but inside, the only noticeable difference is another Opel badge on the steering wheel.

Bradley Hasemeyer and the Translogic crew traveled to Germany to find out if the trans-Atlantic differences were more than skin deep. Surprisingly, he found one rather interesting revision.

In the U.S., Volts get three driver-selectable operating modes. We get Normal, Sport and Mountain modes. But German Amperas get a fourth mode: Halten mode. When cruising the Autobahn, drivers can restrict the use of the Ampera's battery and run only on the small, fuel-efficient engine. Once back on surface streets, they can turn loose the battery and bask in bank-account-boosting, ridiculously good, low-cost electric motor cruising.

Why don't we get Halten mode in the U.S.? Well, the obvious reason is probably that most Americans don't speak German. Beyond that, though, Hasemeyer can only guess that government regulations might hold back implementation here. The again, maybe General Motors just likes Germans more.

This week, our sister site Translogic heads off to Paris to check out the Vélib' bike-sharing and Autolib' electric-vehicle sharing programs.

Vélib' boasts 20,000 bikes and 1,800 stations throughout the city, where anyone with a credit card can check out a bike on the fly. More exciting is the EV-sharing program, which uses Pininfarina-built Bollore Blue Cars that are available to subscribers for rental at rates ranging between €9 (around $12 USD) and €16 per hour (@ $21). The program was launched in December 2011, with 250 cars and 250 stations, and though it has faced some problems, the number of cars is expected to increase to 3,000 by next year.
