Like the Fast & Furious franchise, the Michael Bay-directed series of Transformers movies has become known as much for its bad acting as its impressive lineup of cars. As filming just started for Transformers 4, Bay's website has confirmed two new cars for the next installment as well as a makeover for everyone's favorite tractor trailer hero, Optimus Prime.

Joining the cast of T4 are a "race-inspired" Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. While Bay's website did not supply names for either car, Bugatti is reporting on its Facebook page that the Veyron will join the Autobots. Speaking of the good guys, top Autobot Optimus Prime is getting an all-new body based on a Western Star with a gaudy appearance that was seemingly inspired by Trick My Truck - right down to the six smoke stacks and side pipes!

UPDATE: It seems that Michael Bay's website is releasing more new movie cars each day, and we'll be adding them to the gallery as they become available.
Veyron and C7 Corvette join cast of Transformers 4 [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 May 2013 13:31:00 EST.
Despite the replacement of the entire human cast (including Tyrese Gibson and Josh Duhamel), we think the ladies might still find some eye candy in the upcoming installment of the Michael Bay Transformers franchise. According to the director's website, Mark Wahlberg will join the cinematic battle between the Autobots and Decepticons. Does this mean Marky Mark will drive everyone's favorite movie Camaro, Bumblebee, now?

Bay and Wahlberg first worked together for an upcoming movie called Pain & Gain (also starting Dwayne Johnson, Ed Harris and Ken Jeong), and Bay announced this week that Wahlberg will join the cast of Transformers 4. Filming begins next spring, with an expected release date of June 29, 2014.

Not much else is known about T4, but Bay's website gives us our first look at the movie's logo (above), which shows half the Decepticon insignia.
Michael Bay casts Mark Wahlberg in Transformers 4 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 11 Nov 2012 10:01:00 EST.
Universal Studios has recently opened a Transformers ride at its amusement parks in California and Singapore, and unlike the movies, the ride is being called "engaging" and "amazing." It puts 12 riders in a car that zooms through a 3D battle between Autobots and Decepticons who are destroying Chicago while they decide the fate of humans.

We haven't ridden it, but from reviews the ride appears to be so monumentally and immersively three-dimensional that it could almost qualify as augmented reality. The basic specs: two levels, five minutes long, 14 movie screens, some 60-feet high and curved and so large that one reviewer said he couldn't see the edges, images at four times HD resolution, a 5,000-watt, 14-channel sound system, and props, including drops of mist, steam and attendants in military camo that bark orders at riders.

It has been earning comparisons to what are considered the best rides in the world, but some of the most important rides ever, such as Pirates of the Caribbean. Even Disney's Imagineering theme park unit, who would like its Cars Land ride to get the same reception, has reportedly given the 3D Transformers ride the golf clap.

Michael Bay's Transformers were true enough (for a Bay production, at least) to the original articles in their car and robot states, but their transforming sequences were epilepsy-inducing explosions of cranks and gears that made no sense at all. Admittedly, it didn't stop us from enjoying the first movie.

But the work of a Japanese modeler is what we've been looking for: his Transformer takes us all the way back to the original eightes series when Bumblebee was a Volkswagen Beetle. This is version eight, fitted with 22 servo motors - it even throws punches and does a jig - and we're told that version nine is on the way. We'd like to humbly request that all research on flying cars stops, and every resource be poured into a production version of this right now. Scroll down to check out the video.
Continue reading Japanese man makes the best Transformers model we've ever seen

Japanese man makes the best Transformers model we've ever seen originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 May 2012 19:27:00 EST.
Ready or not, here comes Transformers 4. The Huffington Post reports that Transformers directory Michael Bay has signed a contract with Paramount Pictures to extend the money-minting movie franchise. Yeah, we know. Most everyone says the movies are terrible, with the exception of some eye-popping (yet very overdone) CGI.

It's hard to blame Paramount or Bay for going back to the well for more Autobot love. After all, the movies gross hundreds of millions of dollars, which makes us think that at least some of you are ponying up at the local movie theater.

As for Shia LaBeouf and the rest of the Transformers cast, word is that they will not be back for movie number four. But you can bet that Bumblebee, Optimus and the remaining cast of bad guys will be back. Bay claims the movie will hit the big screen on June 29, 2014, but there is no script at this point. Many will no doubt debate that there will be no script on June 30, 2014, either.
Michael Bay confirms Transformers 4, replacing entire human cast originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 10:00:00 EST.
The attached video explains it all, so we'll keep this simple. It seems Michael Bay directly cribbed scenes from his 2005 movie, The Island, for 2011's Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which is gobbling up people's disposable income this weekend.
Extreme credit goes to the YouTube user who recognized Bay's clever use of CGI and called him out on it. This also proves that at least one human being actually saw The Island. Hit the jump to watch the side-by-side video comparison.
Continue reading YouTube uploader catches Michael Bay sampling himself for Transformers 3

YouTube uploader catches Michael Bay sampling himself for Transformers 3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 02 Jul 2011 11:14:00 EST.
The next installment in the Transformers franchise is set to hit theaters on Tuesday, June 28. Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon will continue the trend of providing a massive stage on which to showcase General Motors vehicles. One of those vehicles in the Michael Bay explosion-fest is a yellow Chevrolet Camaro that goes by the name Bumblebee, and the banana-and-black Autobot is set to spawn a special edition automobile that fans can put in their driveway.

It's called the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro, and you can order one starting in July. If you do so, your Bumblebee decoy will arrive on dealer lots sometime this fall. The Transformers Camaro wears Autobot badges on the fenders, black stripes down the hood, roof and tail, a Bumblebee-specific rear spoiler and blacked-out 20-inch alloys sporting Autobot-logo center caps. Dealers will also be able to offer and install a ground-effects package and a set of 21-inch wheels so that customers can more closely mimic the on-screen Camaro.

The interior of the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro also gets unique accents. Black leather surfaces are contrasted with yellow stitching, while Autobot logos can be seen on the headrests and center console lid.

Interested in picking one up? You'll have to start with either a 2LT or 2SS Camaro that's already wearing the RS appearance package. Tack on another $3,000, and you can drive like Shia Labeouf every day.
Continue reading 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Edition ready to hit the street

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Edition ready to hit the street originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 11:29:00 EST.
Chef Buddy Valastro has stepped up his cake game in a big way. Valastro stars in the TLC series "Cake Boss" and was recently approached to build a confection to celebrate both the Chevrolet Camaro and Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. He wound up building a 2,000-pound cake sculpture that includes Bumblebee in both Autobot and Camaro forms. To pull it off, Valastro and his team had to partner up with special-effects gurus to create a special hydraulic system for the piece. As a result, Bumblebee's wings actuate up and down. The cake also features glowing eyes and fireworks.

The rest of the creation is made from vanilla pound cake and buttercream frosting. Valastro said that the cake was the biggest challenge of his career in more ways than one. The sculpture had to be crafted outside of the chef's bakery due to its height. Hit the jump to check out a video of his creation and the full press blast.
Continue reading Cake Boss builds 2,000-pound Bumblebee Camaro cake

Cake Boss builds 2,000-pound Bumblebee Camaro cake originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 25 Jun 2011 13:50:00 EST.
On July 1, 2011, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon will hit theaters around the country. When it does, one automaker in particular will be smiling, as its vehicles take center stage in the film. As it did in previous installments of the mega-popular movie series, General Motors cars and trucks make up a large portion of the cars and trucks seen on the TF3 screen. Chevrolet is jumping on the tie-in, and a new ad has popped up showing the Bumblebee Camaro in action.

While your own real-life Bumblebee Camaro can't save you from an invasion of angry, shape-shifting robots, it might just protect you in a real-life shunt. Click past the jump to watch the "real" Bumblebee show off the Bowtie badge in Chevy's new "Getaway" spot - you might even catch a glimpse of a speedster version of the 50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray concept.
Continue reading Chevy drops new ad touting Transformers 3 tie-in

Chevy drops new ad touting Transformers 3 tie-in originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 12:30:00 EST.
Summer is right around the corner, and that means theaters will soon be packed with the kind of action-slathered goodness that theater-goers crave. King of explosions Michael Bay has released the latest theatrical trailer for his new boomfest, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon. Judging by the short clip, the whole crew is in for another sequel-baiting adventure. Bumblebee returns as the world's most fearsome Chevrolet Camaro and Optimus Prime seems to have received a crash course in badassery since the last time we saw him grace the silver screen.

For reasons that remain unclear, the Prime has yet to punt Shia Labeouf into another galaxy, so fans can look forward to enduring him throughout the span of the film. Labeouf's new co-star Rosie Huntington-Whitley seems to do a smart enough job of looking equal parts damsel and distressed. The film hits theaters on May 1, so you don't have long to wait before you can sink your teeth into the action. Hit the jump to check out the trailer for yourself.
Autobots in NASCAR... who knew? Click above to watch the video after the jump

Excuse us if we're not all that excited about Transformers 3. The novelty of seeing fantastically animated versions of the toys we played with as youngsters died off right about the same time an SR 71 Blackbird turned into old man Decepticon in T2. But hey, at least we can consider watching any movie featuring Megan Fox. Oh wait, she was replaced.

You know what could get us jacked for T3? NASCAR Transformers.

We kid, of course, but it appears we're going to receive exactly that - Autobots with numbers on the doors - even if we didn't ask for them. Hit the jump to watch the latest commercial for the July blockbuster. We're told the ad was aired during the Daytona 500... can't say we were watching. Then again, if NASCAR allows Jimmie Johnson's car to be fitted like the T3 car pictured above, they'd have our attention in 2012.
Lamborghini Countaches, a Ferrari Testarossa, Pontiac's Fiero and Trans Am in multiple shapes and sizes, more Jeep Wranglers than you can shake a stick at and even a Lancia Stratos. No, we're not talking about the posters plastered on the walls of our bedrooms when we were 12, we're talking Transformers. Specifically, the original cartoon series that aired from 1984 to 1987.

Yes, the majority of us who man the Autoblog HQ are very much children of the 1980s, so we know ourselves some Transformers folklore. And so you'd think an infographic like the one seen after the jump would really get our blood pumping... and it did, for a moment. Then we noticed how many errors and inconsistencies were present and that pumping turned into something more like boiling. Here are just a few of the many errors:

Optimus Prime, the most famous of all Autobots, was a cab-over truck. Michael Bay turned him into a traditional semi for the more recent movie franchise.

Note the number of vehicles shown that were built after the show ended in 1987, including a 1994 Volkswagen New Beetle.

Hound was an American Army Jeep, not a Japanese "Jeep".

Chromedome... what the heck is that thing?

Ultra Magnus, like Optimus Prime, was a cab-over Freightliner, not a Mac truck.

Check out the entire infographic after the jump and let us know in the comments if you find any more errors. We will say the infographic's last section where it shows which automakers the Autobots tended to favor is pretty cool.

We've already seen plenty of action on the set of the third installment in the Transformers. Unplanned accidents and injured cast members seemed to dominate the news, but now the film is heading into post-production and we can get a glimpse at what type of action to expect on the big screen. The first trailer has been released for Transformers: Dark of the Moon and we can honestly say the teaser does a good job at raising our excitement level for the new film... even though we know it's going to suck as bad as the last two.

The trailer shows the 1969 Moon landing in glorious HD, but also reveals a secret motive behind the mission. We won't spoil it for you, so just jump and try to figure out how this relates to cars... again.

You know how they say some movies are cursed? It seems that may just be the case for the folks working on Transformers 3. The movie has had its share of crashes, with a few of them being of the "unplanned" variety. The latest incident takes place in Washington D.C. and involves a certain yellow Camaro that Transformers fans know better as Bumblebee.

As a scene was being filmed, a real police vehicle was responding to a call and cut quickly across the set. The two cars collided and the police officer driving the SUV was taken to a nearby hospital, but it appears there are no serious injuries - except to the Camaro, which was covered up and taken away.

Earlier this year, production came to a screeching halt when Gabrielo Cedillo had to be rushed to the hospital. Cedillo, an extra, was driving a car when a cable from a camera vehicle broke loose, smashed through her windshield and hit her in the head. She underwent emergency surgery but her stint in the ICU is up, and her condition is improving.

A trio of videos of this latest accident can be seen after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Mark!

It's a rare thing to see a car penned by someone who's a die-hard fan. More often than not, designers are assigned to vehicles they have little or no emotional attachment to, and as such, the car buying public is regularly supplied with a slurry of bland appliances that do little to acknowledge a car's model history and next to nothing to advance the vehicle aesthetically.

Thankfully, that's not the case with the Nissan 370Z. Randy Rodriguez, the guy behind the original design of the 370Z, had owned 10 different Z cars before he sat down to sketch out the latest iteration of Nissan's low-buck sports machine. Autoblog had the chance to catch up with Rodriguez at the Z's 40th birthday bash last weekend in Franklin, TN. Hit the jump to read a few excerpts from the conversation, including talk about alternatively powered future Zs and how he drew inspiration for the car's look from the Discovery Channel.

Transformers 3 is filming in Chicago right now, luring all camera-toting film buffs to the Windy City's streets like moths to a bug zapper. In addition to snagging the three NASCAR Transformers and Optimus Prime's trailer, there's the matter of a 1972 Datsun 510 painted much like Bumblebee and dangling a "BEE-OTCH" air freshener from its rear view mirror.

We have no idea what that's about, but as long as it doesn't involve Wheelie or Skids we should be all right with it. Well, maybe not - this looks like it's shaping up to be as big a mess as Revenge of the Fallen. Maybe he'll at least take the form of a Nissan GT-R later, as with his Chevrolet Camaro 'upgrade' in the first movie. Click the links below to check out the rest of the shots.
If comically obscene and offensive ghettofied twin robots aren't your thing - and we certainly hope they are not - allow us to introduce you to a transforming automobile that is in much better taste. Designer Nikola Nikolov took his first car, a Lada Samara Diva, cut it apart and welded it all back together to form the finished product you see here.

The artist describes his created as standing "in a position of ready surprise. He is in the moment between knowing what he was and knowing what he has become." No, we're not quite sure what that means either. Regardless, we think this 6.5-foot-tall, 200-pound robot statue is pretty darn awesome.

Stingray Speedster Concept - Click above for gallery

Now, isn't this curious? The eagle-eyed crew over at Corvette Blogger have managed to get their hands on a few shots of what appears to be a speedster version of the ever gorgeous Stingray Concept. You may remember the car from its starring roles in both the Transformers saga and the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. At the time, the car appeared to be a hard-top only, but as these photos demonstrate, it looks mighty fine without a roof, too. So what gives? Is this some sort of re-imagining of the old concept? Is it a movie prop?

We're going to stick pretty close to the Corvette Blogger hypothesis and say it's a little bit of both. The car was spotted sulking around Beverly Hills, so either we're looking at Sideswipe's latest set of clothes, or someone has finally managed to come up with a decent re-body kit to help the C5 look a little less dated. Either way, we like what we see.

Car movies have been big business of late - Transformers, Death Race, The A-Team - which makes it unsurprising that the business of getting cars prepped for movies is becoming even bigger business. The upcoming Green Hornet will use 29 classic Imperials; the third film in The Fast & the Furious series needed 200 cars built and modified; and the fourth installment required 240 rebuilt rides.

The New York Times has a look at the outfit that builds the cars that make us go, "Awesome!" Run by Dennis McCarthy in a shop in Sun Valley, California, his crew of 40 teamsters will grab tens of vehicles from eBay and Craigslist and then work 17-hour days to get them ready to jump, fly, flip, explode, and engage in general badassery. For Fast & Furious, they put that Regal GNX body on its frame backwards so it would look like a high-speed chase in reverse.

And yes, they're already at work on the fifth episode in the F&F franchise. Head on over to The New York Times for the rest of the story - it's one of the few chop shops we're glad to have around.

Please excuse us while we take a little trip down TMZ lane. Word on the web is we now know who will be replacing Megan Fox in the next scintillating Transformers flick. Shia Labeouf will be locking lips with none other than Rosie Huntington-Whitley. Who is that, exactly? Good question. Huntington-Whiteley has spent the majority of her days prancing down a runway in her unmentionables as a Victoria Secret model. The best part? The 23 year-old model-turned actress doesn't have a drop of acting experience. The jokes write themselves.

Fox was reportedly kicked out of the story line to give the main character a new love interest, though rumor was that the actress had also spent her off time berating director Michael Bay for any number of perceived character flaws. Our guess is Bay got tired of hearing the insults and told Fox to take a hike. Now back to your regularly scheduled content.
