It's a precarious game making a racing car for the road. The Caparo T1 never seemed to have gotten off the ground, close as it was to a road-going F1 racer. The Tramontana is just about as close, but at half a million euros, the niche automaker is reportedly having trouble finding buyers.

The solution? Tap into the racing market. According to emerging reports from across the pond, Tramontana is considering replacing the twin-turbo V12 sourced from Mercedes with a Cosworth V10 for the competition model. The British engineering firm is known to many for its Formula One engine program: While it currently supplies 2.4-liter V8s to Williams, Lotus, HRT and Virgin, as recently 2006 it was still building 3.0-liter V10s for Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Cosworth also has plenty of expertise building engines for other racing series as well as roadcars, so there's plenty to tap into to transform the Tramontana from a road-garbling beast to a curb-chomping racer.

Advanced Design Tramontana on Jay Leno's Garage - Click above to watch video after the jump

Jay Leno just keeps on living the car-obsessed dream. The comedian recently got a chance to hop into the cockpit of the Advanced Design Tramontana - answering the question about what would happen if you threw an Ariel Atom, KTM X-Bow and five kilos of cocaine into a blender and left it on for an hour or so. The car weighs around 2,700 pounds, which seems like quite a bit considering that there's a carbon fiber monocoque at the heart of this beast, but there's a surprise in the engine bay. A 5.5-liter twin-turbo V12 from Mercedes-Benz provides 750 horsepower to the rear wheels. The faint of heart can dial back the gusto to a more manageable 540 with the flick of a switch.

Advanced Design actually decided to plop an honest-to-goodness sequential six-speed gearbox behind that massive mill. Feel free to hop the jump to see the full clip from Jay Leno's Garage, complete with some very wild hair. It's cool, Jay. We won't judge.

Tramontana in fighter plane regalia - Click above for high-res image gallery

You've seen the Tramontana before, and now, you can see it in motion. This Spanish made beast sports a 100% carbon fiber chassis, a twin-turbocharged AMG 5.5-liter V12 that makes 720 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque, it weighs 2,500 pounds and looks like an F1 car designed for Robotech. 0-60 happens before you get in the car and top speed is orbit. Probably. Not only are Tramontana's more expensive than you could possibly imagine, but each one is designed around the owner. Plus, your passenger sits behind you. We like that. But possibly the craziest thing about the R Edition is a certain button on the dashboard. See, in "regular" grocery shopping mode, the big Mercedes motor spits out "just" 550 hp. Luckily there's a button labeled "720 HP" on the dash. Wish our car had that. Check the video of Tom from Fifth Gear driving it after you jump.

Gallery: Tramontana in fighter plane regalia

Continue reading VIDEO: Fifth Gear exercises the outlandish Tramontana R Edition

VIDEO: Fifth Gear exercises the outlandish Tramontana R Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 19:27:00 EST.
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Tramontana R

Two years ago, we tracked down a small, independent automaker on the floor of the Geneva Motor Show that promised to deliver a segment-busting supercar to those bored with Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Fast-forward to today and the Tramontana Group seems to have made good on its promise with the unveiling of the Tramontana R Edition.

The R is an evolved version of the standard open-wheel two-seater, packing a Mercedes-sourced 5.5-liter V12 available in either naturally aspirated, 550 hp guise or a twin-turbocharged 760 hp version that dolls out an astonishing 811 lb-ft of torque. The Group claims a 0-100 kph time of 3.6 seconds and a 10.15-second run to 200 kph.

The wheelbase has been shortened by 50mm to improve handling and aerodynamics, and weight is down by 202 pounds to just 2,777 pounds. The R stretches 192 inches from nose to tail, is 82 inches wide and 51 inches tall, and weight distribution is a perfect 50:50 left to right and 42:58 front to rear. Tramontana fitted 20-inch carbon fiber and magnesium wheels at each corner, along with high-performance summer rubber sized 245/40 in front and 335/30 in the rear. 380mm, six-piston Brembos handle stopping duties, while a custom Ohlins suspension allows the R's ride-height to be adjusted between 85 and 135 mm.

The body speaks for itself, as does the exposed carbon fiber interior, which features a chop-top steering wheel, an LCD instrument panel and the controls to the six-speed sequential gearbox. Production will be limited to 12 units per year with a price tag of €385,000 ($495,000), but unfortunately, we won't be seeing it in Geneva next month - the Tramontana R will make its official debut at the Top Marques Monaco show at the end of March.

Thanks to Autoblog Spanish, we've got live shots from the Tramontana's unveiling earlier today.
