A chap who calls himself "Sheepo" has a habit of making custom creations out of Lego bits. These aren't kits, these are the expressions of his own automotive imagination using traditional Lego and Lego Technic parts. His year so far seems mostly devoted to suspension builds and a Land Rover Defender, but his latest work is a Caterham Seven.

Sheepo keeps his builds close to their inspirations, this Seven constructed with working steering, double-wishbone front suspension and Ackerman geometry in front, a three-link De Dion rear suspension in back and disc brakes. A bit of liberty has gone into the gearbox, which is a five-speed sequential unit plus reverse.

At one-seventh scale it is 45 centimeters long, has 2,500 parts and five motors. It is also a Chapman-approved lightweight at just 2.2 kilograms. Check it out in the video below and the high-res gallery of images above.
Continue reading Lego Caterham Seven does Chapman proud [w/video]

Lego Caterham Seven does Chapman proud [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 May 2013 19:35:00 EST.
A playful design company has created a delightful set of wooden playthings. The Dream Car by Huzi Design was a successful Kickstarter campaign for a set of interchangeable wooden blocks that can be used to create any kind of car - no, not just a car, any kind of thing on wheels. Now available for sale, Huzi uses birch wheels affixed to walnut bases, and different bodystyles are made of poplar and coated with the same paint used for chalkboards. The wooden bases contain magnets that are recessed when not in use but that pop out to secure the body on when needed. Each set comes with a box of dustless chalk so kids, and adults, can draw on the bodies and not make a mess.

The project was a collaboration of designers from around the world, answering the question "Why can't a dream car have graffiti on it, or have triangular windows, or even not have any resemblance of a movable vehicle?"

The video below with details the project from its Kickstarter roots, and explains the brainchild of a woman whose company name comes from asking herself the question, "What would the world look like if we all had a mustache?"
Continue reading Huzi Dream Car is a magnetic spin on wooden toys [w/video]

Huzi Dream Car is a magnetic spin on wooden toys [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Apr 2013 08:01:00 EST.
Hot Wheels has rolled out a new series of die-cast toys aimed directly at our nostalgic hearts. The Retro Entertainment Series plucks iconic cars from movie and television past, shrinks them down to 1:64 scale and packages them up for your buying enjoyment. The collection includes machines like the 1932 Ford from American Graffiti and DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future to the Ecto 1 from Ghostbusters and The Bandit's '77 Firebird from Smokey and The Bandit. There's even a 1971 Plymouth Satellite from The Brady Bunch. All told there will be seven mixes, each with five distinct vehicles.

The sets won't just be land bound, either. Hot Wheels also plans to produce a few aircraft, including the Island Hopper from Magnum P.I. and Cylon Raider from Battlestar Galactica. Awesome.

If you want one, expect to pay around $3 for the privilege. Just be prepared for the quotient of badly-sung theme songs in your household to increase exponentially.
Hot Wheels Retro Entertainment series memorializes your favorite Hollywood cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Apr 2013 09:13:00 EST.
Citroen has taken a unique stab at commemorating Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena's nine World Rally Championship wins. Rather than work up yet another tired video of the champions expounding on the virtues, trials and and tribulations that come with being the very best for nearly a decade straight, the company whipped up a diorama atop Citroen DS3. The scale model covers nine separate rally terrains, including bits from Rally Finland and the Acropolis Rally. Each one of the nine sections features a 1:43 scale version of the duo's rally car from each year of victorious competition.

The model took Kieron Barter of Funky Lemon Design and his team some two months to complete. Initially displayed at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the diorama is set to start a tour of various dealers beginning today. Check out the full press release below for more information.
Continue reading This is Citroën's amazing diorama tribute to celebrate its WRC winnings

This is Citroën's amazing diorama tribute to celebrate its WRC winnings originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 08:28:00 EST.
Automoblox, the little and terrifically simple wooden cars, are part of Autoblog's holiday giveaway every single year. And every single year, tons of people try to win them. So even though scale-model cars are as detailed as the real thing, R/C cars can go faster than and do things that real cars can't, and real cars have previously unthinkable amounts of power and tricks that toy cars still haven't even imagined, folks continue to queue up for an artfully carved chunk of wood.

That kind of timeless appeal is what got Italian designer Matteo Ragni to start TobeUs. Tired of seeing his children quickly bored with toys, he wanted to create a toy that his kids would love, that had "a recognizable smell, an unquestioned resistance to impact and texting" and the ability to be recycled or reused at the end of its life. The result is little and terrifically simple wooden cars carved from a single block of cedar.

The effort, 100% TobeUs, now features 100 wooden cars from 100 designers, and there's an exhibit - called 100% TobeUs: 100 Designers for 100 New Toy Cars - at the Natural Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, Italy, to go with it. A few of the cars can be bought as toys, but all of them can be viewed on the TobeUs site. They all come with the names of their designers, but most of the captions are in Italian. Don't let that stop you, though - like holidays and food comas, the language of the little wooden car is universal.
100 designers give their interpretation of the wooden toy car originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 15 Dec 2012 10:01:00 EST. If idle hands are the devil's playground, idle engineers are a field day of awesome. Gareth Jones is a mechanical engineer with a penchant for slot cars, and when his child grew to an age to appreciate scale cars whirring around a plastic track, he did what any responsible father would do: he went out and bought a new Scalextric set. While Jones found the new cars to be much more detailed and accurate than the models he had known from the '70s, he was frustrated to find models like a '69 Dodge Charger handled just as well as an F1 car. At some point, he decided to right that wrong on his lunch breaks.

Using some rapid prototyping equipment and a few CAD drawings, Jones whipped up a chassis that would allow the bodies to actually lean in a corner. Still unsatisfied, the engineer designed a unique steering system that allows the wheels to look like they actually turn in a corner. Throw in some clever interiors and a custom-designed 1972 Cadillac limo, and you've got all the elements of a great scale electric chase from the '70s. Check out the videos below for a closer look. The A-Team, Starsky and Hutch and the Blues Brothers all make an appearance.
Continue reading Engineer builds lifelike slot cars with steering and suspension [w/video]

Engineer builds lifelike slot cars with steering and suspension [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 12:30:00 EST.
Yeah, yeah, you liked to build with Lego bricks when you were a kid. But could you build a go-kart large enough and sturdy enough to carry your own weight? Don't answer yet. Could you then make this monster kart actually move under its own power, albeit slowly, like the real thing? We thought not, hotshot.

Mind you, it seems as though the adult in this video - a Dutchman by the name of Eric Steenstra - is running the show, and likely the build. The go kart (dubbed "Le-GoKart" on Steenstra's tumblr page) makes use of 48 Lego Mindstorms NXT motors and 16 NXT battery packs, has working headlights and taillights and can support the weight of a 222-pound adult man. It is constructed exclusively from Lego parts, too - no cheating.

Forget the fact that the kart is so slow with a child piloting it that an area rug substantially slows it down, and simply enjoy the videoed madness, below.
Continue reading Drivable Lego go-kart is slow but awesome

Drivable Lego go-kart is slow but awesome originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 14:58:00 EST.
People were riveted by Roger Penske's deep blue Sunoco Camaros driven by Mark Donohue in the 1968 and '69 Trans-Am series. Spectators were fascinated because the cars were big winners, and rivals couldn't figure out how Penske's Camaros were so dominant.

The 1969 Camaro you see above above pays tribute to the Sunoco Camaros, but it's riveting for a different reason: it's a slot-car track. Why? Because that's just what Slot Mods does. We've seen their work before, such as the track hidden inside a Porsche 917 shell. This weekend at Pebble Beach they're unveiling a Road America replica track commissioned by Bobby Rahal.

But for now there's that 1969 Camaro that doesn't run the track, it is the track. Check it out in the video posted below.
Continue reading 1969 Chevy Camaro becomes slot-car track

1969 Chevy Camaro becomes slot-car track originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 14:29:00 EST.
GreenLight Toys has unveiled a series of foam-paper car puzles for 2012, five American muscle cars and one muscle truck. The MotoBuildz aren't exactly models, they're more like those 500-piece landscape puzzles you find at educational toy stores, only with fewer pieces and less frustration.

They're also powered, thanks to a friction motor that provides plenty of juice when given a hearty push. Follow the jump for a video on how the whole thing comes together.
Continue reading 3D auto puzzles of American muscle are actually motorized

3D auto puzzles of American muscle are actually motorized originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 04 Mar 2012 20:01:00 EST.
We've reported plenty on items we'd like to place in our automotive-themed dream house, from engine-block coffee tables and Pininfarina desks to Aston Martin loveseats and Porsche sofas - but most of them are for the living room. We'd be remised, however, to forget the one part of the house where the fascination all began: our childhood bedroom.

We all had the posters up on the walls, the models on the shelves and maybe the sheets on the bed, but the luckiest kids among us had beds shaped like cars, similar - but probably not as awesome - as this latest release from toy company Step2. Released this week at the New York Toy Fair, it isn't just a bed: it's a whole bedroom set, all modeled on the Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

The set includes a $299 bed capable of holding a toddler's mattress but expandable to accommodate a twin (extending its usability from ages 2 to 10) with optional working headlights for an extra $30, a $110 dresser that looks like dad's tool box, a $65 storage chest and a $40 wheeled storage box to make clean-up time quick. It's all made of molded plastic from one of the biggest in the business, and is sure to make for some very sweet dreams indeed.

If NASCAR is more to your kid's speed, Step2 has got a stock-car bedroom available too, but it's the Vette set that has us (a) wishing we were little again, and (b) second-guessing the grown-up's bed we just ordered for ourselves.
Corvette Z06 bed upgrades your childhood originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Feb 2012 08:00:00 EST.
If you were fortunate enough to visit last year's Detroit Auto Show, you may recall something special lurking in the Ford booth. The automaker featured an expansive slot car track with a variety of Ford Mustang racers darting around an immensely detailed course. As it turns out, the track was built by David Beattie, a slot car enthusiast who has turned his passion into a serious business. Beattie uses a CNC router to carve the topography of your favorite track before applying numerous handmade details. The track surface itself is airbrushed to mimic well-worn tarmac, and Beattie makes every tree and fence by hand.

The craftsman can create any track from Le Mans to Laguna Seca. You'll need deep pockets to put one of these slot car venues in your man cave, however. Prices begin at $15,000 and ratchet all the way up to $75,000. Of course, that may be a small price to pay if you absolutely have to own a Porsche 917 shell that opens up to reveal an intricate figure-eight. Hit the jump to check out a few videos of Beattie's handiwork, including an interview with Jay Leno.
Continue reading The ultimate in slot car tracks comes at a price [w/video]

The ultimate in slot car tracks comes at a price [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 15:31:00 EST.
Like floods, wildfires and tsunamis, the Ken Block marketing machine is a force of nature. The exhibition driver has partnered up with Mattel for a special line of Hot Wheels toys that include 1:64-scale die cast versions of Block's WRC Ford Fiesta in either black or white liveries. As with most Hot Wheels toys, the cars are priced at $1, which means that just about everyone can afford to find one of these in their stocking this year.

Mattel has also unveiled two different remote controlled Ken Block cars, starting with the radio-controlled Nitro Speedsters Ford Fiesta. The pint-sized R/C car is a self-contained controller and racer unit, perfect for stuffing in your pocket. We imagine the tiny wireless car would be ideal for disrupting class or the occasional office meeting. The whole kit will set you back $25.99.

Those of us who demand a slightly larger R/C experience may opt for the Ken Block R/C Fiesta Stunt Car. The toy allows just about anyone to execute either wide or tight drifts with little more than a press of a button, and with a scale speed of 0-80 mph in two seconds, the toy should be plenty of fun for $45. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Ken Block gets own line of Hot Wheels in time for holiday season

Ken Block gets own line of Hot Wheels in time for holiday season originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 14:30:00 EST.
We'll admit it, this video isn't exactly new, but it's the first time we're seeing it and, honestly, we're stunned. The creators have dubbed this "The Mother of All Hot Wheels Tracks," and after sitting at our desks with wide eyes and dropped jaws, we're inclined to agree. And not just because it's amazing to watch a little toy car run a claimed 2,000-foot gauntlet of orange plastic - it's remarkable from a construction standpoint, too. Think about it: How many times would you design an elaborate Hot Wheels track only to have the whole thing come apart around Turn Four?

Consider this thing the Nürburgring of the Hot Wheels world.

Being the skeptics that we are, we so have to question the authenticity of this race course, only because the changing camera angles leaves some wiggle room for building the sections separately with much less track. You can vote yea or nay in our poll below, but frankly, we want to live in a world where this is 100 percent real.

Regardless, it's an amazing feat of Hot Wheels engineering, and we highly encourage you to take four minutes out of your day to watch the full video, posted after the jump.

Someone over at DadDoes got their hands on the new Hot Wheels Video Racer toys. If you're not familiar with the latest from Mattel, allows us to explain. This newest Hot Wheels car is basically a rolling video camera. A lens sits up front, and it's covered up by a Hot Wheels body. Out back, a USB port allows you to download your footage...um, we mean your kids footage, of course.

The DadDoes reviewer tests out the camera by running the car down a few tracks. The resulting footage is both fast and furious. If you're prone to motion sickness, you may want to skip this one, but if not, then click past the jump to see the Hot Wheels Video Racer in action. Also, be sure to head over to DadDoes.com for the full write-up on the $59.99 toy-version of a GoPro camera.
Continue reading Hot Wheels Video Racer gets tested, allows for nausea-inducing fun

Hot Wheels Video Racer gets tested, allows for nausea-inducing fun originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 19:58:00 EST. Hot Wheels throws Columbia for a loop - Click above for image gallery

Diecast cars are a fun distraction regardless of your age, in fact, we've got a few on our desk at this very moment. Hot Wheels may be the king of scale-car fun, but its marketing department likes to think big.

Recently, we saw how it turned a historic Australian building into a 3D racetrack. Now it's apparently focused its creative attention on Bogota, Colombia. Going low-tech this time, Hot Wheels has placed a giant 'loop' in the middle of an overpass.

It's certainly more eye-catching than a traditional billboard, and it still gets the message across that Hot Wheels are all about fun. Thanks for the tip, Andrew!

2010 BMW Baby Racer II Motorsport - Click above for high-res image

It's never too early to learn the fundamentals of car control, kids, and BMW's new entry-level single-seat roadster is just the ticket. Constructed of light-weight composites and equipped with real rubber tires, a speedometer and a tach in the cockpit, the BMW Baby Racer II Motorsport ditches traditional pedal power in favor of the more experimental leg-scramble technique. Interestingly enough, the company choose to forego brakes all together.

Is this the face of things to come from BMW? Probably not, but if you know a fledgling racer between the ages of six months and three years-old, we know the perfect birthday gift. What do we have to do to get BMW to send over a crate load of these things for cubicle races?

Top Gear host James May went to Dorking, England and built a Lego <strike>fort</strike> house in an orchard with more than three million Lego pieces. Now it's time for him to vacate the premises, and the house has been torn down. Mays had tried to get the structure taken to the Lego park in Windsor, but the cost and logistics were too challenging for the park to accept.

So now it's dismantled, all the way down to its red Lego slippers. With the plastic fantastic house in pieces, all of the bricks will go to charity and "they have all been allocated, so people can't just turn up with a bucket." That means you. Yet we do wonder if that goes for the Lego toilet as well...

If you've been trying to raise your high score on that iPhone or iPod Touch racing game but you just can't get your chi going without a steering wheel, this baby could be for you. Made by CTA Digital, you clip the phone into a holder, clip the holder into the wheel, and channel your Herr Schumacher.

Splurge for the top-of-the-line model and the wheel is attached to a suction cup by an adjustable arm, and you can go past Schumi straight to Kwai Chang Caine -- that's straight up Kung Fu badness. We won't mention how it might make you look, but you're not worried about that, are you? In case you're wondering, though, you can get a glimpse in the video after the jump. Hat tip to James

An entirely galaxy could have been birthed in the time it's taking for Gran Turismo 5 to arrive, but at least Sony is trying to make it worth everyone's while when the portable driving sim shows up October 1. If you pre-order Gran Turismo PSP, you'll be able to add one of five cars in select colors, the most special among them being a 1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400 in luscious Arancio (that's orange).

This is the first time Lamborghini has made it to the pixelated world of GT, and the marketing manager promised it won't be the last. The other vehicles available include a Bugatti Veyron in Black M, an Enzo in Giallo (yellow), the GTbyCitroen in a deeper hue of butter, and a GT-R Spec V in metallic blue.

You can still get the cars later even if you don't pre-order, just not in those colors, but in the meantime check them out in the high-res gallery below. Thanks for the tip, Seminole
Captain Slow on Top Gear, has a BBC show called James May's Toy Stories. After building an award-winning Plasticine garden and the world's largest model airplane, the next thing on May's list is a house built of Legos. A two-storey house. And he intends to live in it for a weekend.

The house will be built in Dorking, England and everything that can be made out of Legos will be made out of Lego. Said May, "I've got a man working on a flushing Lego lavatory. We think it's possible." Seeing that Legoland doesn't even have a house made of Lego - and certainly not Lego toilets - this should indeed be a "pioneering Lego cause." So far, three million Lego bricks have been contributed to the build, but May is looking for more in case you have any lying around.

[Source: BBC]
REPORT: James May to build life-sized Lego house.
