There are vehicles that, fair or not, will forever be associated with jerky drivers. But as this very recent footage from an in-car camera shows, even the most mundane of sedans can be piloted by an ass.

In this video, the driver of one very beige Toyota Camry is driving like a person choked with rage. Though we don't see which (if any) actions by our camera car might have lead up to the tirade, we do see the Camry driver swerving from lane to lane, in multiple attempts to get in front of and brake check the couple in the recording.

According to the text associated with the YouTube video, the offending incident took place last week, on a section of I-880 near Fremont, CA. The uploader has gone so far as to include the date, time and license plate number of the Camry driver, in hopes, we guess, that some kind of legal action can be taken against him. Take a closer look for yourself in the video below.
Continue reading Watch a Camry driver in full road rage

Watch a Camry driver in full road rage originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Apr 2013 18:58:00 EST.
When we first saw and drove new midsize sedans like the 2013 Nissan Altima and 2013 Ford Fusion, we had a feeling the Toyota Camry would eventually see a challenge for the top sales spot, but we had no idea things would move this quickly. Automotive News is reporting that the quarter tallies still show the Camry holding a sizable lead over its competition, but the Altima did manage to outsell the Toyota by 100 units last month. While a single month of not outselling the competition might not be enough to unseat the Camry from its 11-year sales throne, it goes to show how far recent competitors in the segment have come.

The four best-selling cars in the midsize segment (in order) are the Camry, Honda Accord, Altima and Fusion, with each car boasting more than 80,000 units through the first three months of the year. Both the Accord and Fusion are seeing double-digit year-over-year sales increases while the Camry and Altima have dropped somewhat. And it wasn't just Camry that was losing ground. As we saw in the March 2013 By The Numbers post, Toyota sales as a whole were down slightly from 2012 while all of its key competitors (Chevrolet, Ford, Honda and Nissan) were in the green.

After the top four sellers in the segment, the next closest midsizers are the Chevrolet Malibu and Hyundai Sonata, but these cars are well off the competitive pace. Although the 2014 Mazda6 isn't expected to take too big of a bite out of the midsize market, its attractive design and available diesel engine could continue the shakeup of this once-predictable segment.
Altima, Fusion shaking up midsize sedan sales race originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Apr 2013 09:44:00 EST.
Toyota may be set to lose share the midsize sedan market. While speaking with Automotive News, Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz said that if his company kept pace with the current swell in the market for family four doors, Toyota would need to sell around 500,000 Camry models. "I'm not sure we can do much more than 400 [thousand] today," Lentz said.

But that doesn't mean Camry sales are shrinking - on the contrary, Lentz thinks Toyota will likely sell more Camry units in 2013 than it did in 2012, it's just that the company isn't keeping pace with segment's current explosion in popularity. Industry wide, midsized sedan sales have increased by 20 percent. "Are we going to lose [Camry] share? Probably so," Lentz said, "but we will continue to grow in raw volume."

Toyota sold 404,886 Camry units last year, and the company just revised its 2013 sales objective from 2.18 million units earlier this year to 2.2-million plus units, so while things are looking up for the brand and Camry sales may be on the rise, Toyota may not have the muscle to keep up its share in the sedan segment. Whether that's because of a production bottleneck or a predicted sales ceiling isn't clear. We've got a call in and will update this news item if/when we learn more.
Toyota sees Camry share loss despite predicting increasing sales originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Apr 2013 11:29:00 EST.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has grown its investigation into certain Toyota models to cover a full 1.4 million cars and trucks. Reuters reports the government safety agency has upgraded the investigation to a full-blown engineering analysis, which may eventually lead to a recall. NHTSA has received a number of complaints concerning fires tied to models built between September 2006 and August 2008 that use the same power window master switch design. All told, customers have reported nine injuries and 161 crashes or fires, though no deaths have been tied to the issue.

The analysis covers 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 and Yaris models as well as 2008 Highlander Hybrid crossover. Back in February, NHTSA opened an investigation into 830,000 Camry and RAV4 units, though today's announcement grows that number to over 1.4 million models.
NHTSA expands Toyota fire probe to 1.4M cars and trucks originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 14:00:00 EST.
Judge James V. Selna has warned jurors in a wrongful death suit about suspicions surrounding Toyota. According to Inside Line, the warning comes tied to the automaker's conduct during an investigation of a 2008 Camry involved in a fatal crash allegedly caused by unintended acceleration. The single-car accident in Utah claimed the lives of the driver, Pual van Alfen, as well as one other passenger. Two passengers were also injured in the event on November 5, 2010. According to the report, two weeks later, Toyota inspected the sedan without the owner's presence or consent, including the onboard black box. Judge Selena cautioned jurors that they should treat the testimony of Toyota personnel who participated in the investigation with "greater caution than that of other witnesses."

Plaintiffs argued that without their own lawyers present during the inspection, data from the Event Data Recorder could have been changed or deleted entirely. The Judge said that while there was no evidence that Toyota did so, the fact that the automaker failed to notify the owner of the inspection casts a "cloud of suspicion" over the examination.
Judge cautions jurors over Toyota conduct in sudden acceleration case originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Jun 2012 17:59:00 EST.
When Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda wanted to give his company's 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Camry a shakedown run, Kyle Busch was chosen to ride shotgun. Even though Busch has won 85 races driving Toyotas in three NASCAR series, it was Toyoda who took the driver's seat for a spin around Daytona International Speedway.

The redesigned Camry stocker is expected to be submitted for approval this summer, and you can watch Akio Toyoda put it through its paces in the video below.
Continue reading Watch Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda drive the new NASCAR Camry

Watch Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda drive the new NASCAR Camry originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 May 2012 12:01:00 EST.
NASCAR may have once been a form of motorsport in which only domestic automakers competed. And that's largely still the case, with one notable exception: Toyota. The Japanese automaker faced some difficulty breaking into the Good Ol' Boys racing series, but though some purists may still malign it, Toyota is in NASCAR to stay. And this is its latest car.

"Based", in design anyway, on the latest Camry, the new stock car from Toyota Racing Development is set to compete in the Sprint Cup next season, alongside the new Ford Fusion (among other competitors from Dodge and Chevy). The result of "an aggressive redesign", the new racer was developed with input from the company's Calty Design studio to look more like the road-going Camry than ever before.

Yes, it does bear a resemblance to its road-going cousin, especially in the fascia. That said, it's still a composite body over a tube frame powered by a V8 engine driving the rear wheels. In other words, this is a Camry in name only.

Of course it doesn't hurt Toyota's case that the Camry is built in America with more American components than most "domestic" vehicles, and now the stock car looks more stock, too. Keep reading below for the full press release.
Continue reading Toyota aims to put more "stock" into stock cars with 2013 NASCAR Camry

Toyota aims to put more "stock" into stock cars with 2013 NASCAR Camry originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 May 2012 19:00:00 EST.
When Hyundai rolled out their outrageously styled Sonata three years ago, car buyers took notice. It's eye-catching exterior styling, well-appointed interior and affordable price was just what a lot of family sedan buyers wanted.

Few will admit it, but carmakers sat up and paid attention, too. However, Andy Palmer, Nissan executive vice president for global planning, doesn't mind telling the world that his company certainly saw the significance of the midsize Korean sedan. So much so that they briefly halted design work on the 2013 Altima.

"We even delayed development by a short amount just to check that the (new Altima's) proportions were right, the (package) was right (and that) the product overall was right," Palmer tells Ward's Auto. "I'd say they (Hyundai) are our major point of reference."

But with the Altima as the second-best selling car in its segment, Nissan is focusing not on the Sonata, but on Toyota and the No. 1 best seller: Camry.

"If you keep coming with better cars and better communications, telling better stories, over a period of time," Palmer says. "I guarantee you'll be talking about Toyota and Nissan."
Hyundai Sonata caused Nissan to reassess 2013 Altima development originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Apr 2012 14:44:00 EST. Toyota is looking to meld the smartphones with the television in a new ad campaign. The automaker is giving fans a chance to win two Camrys in new promotion that uses the Shazam mobile app in conjunction with a TV spot. When the commercial airs, viewers simply fire up Shazam and enter the giveaway. (They can also enter the sweepstakes online.) Toyota says the program is the first and largest of its kind to use Shazam.

The "Connections" TV spot is designed to encourage further exploration of the so-called "Camry Effect," a social media campaign focused on how the Camry impacts people's lives for the better. Fans can enter the sweepstakes once daily for a chance to take home a Camry for themselves and one for a friend. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Toyota using Shazam music ID app for new TV spot, giveaway

Toyota using Shazam music ID app for new TV spot, giveaway originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 04 Feb 2012 10:02:00 EST.
You know those Toyota commercials that we never get, the ones aired in distant lands like Australia and Brazil and that are, oh, interesting? We're finally getting one. Toyota is returning to Super Bowl advertising after a three-year hiatus with a 30-second version of this longer-form 60-second spot for the 2012 Camry, and we think it's amusing enough to be worthy of The Big Game.

This is a continuation of the reinvention theme introduced in the first 2012 Camry ad last year, and this commercial adds some comedy, a welcome change from Toyota's typically sober marketing campaigns.
The 2012 Toyota Camry and 2012 Cadillac CTS have joined the ranks of vehicles that have earned the coveted five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The vehicles mark the 15th and 16th models to nab the top rating under the tougher NHTSA crash test standards enacted for 2011 models. Last year, the 2011 Camry took home four stars in the evaluations. Toyota reminds us that the 2012 Camry is built with high-strength steel to help protect the passenger cell against deflection in the event of an accident, and that the vehicle comes standard with 10 airbags, all of which contribute to the new model's superior score.

The Fiat 500, meanwhile, didn't fare so well under the range of crash evaluations. The tiny hatchback collected just three stars overall. The side-impact test was particularly cruel to the Italian compact, with NHTSA awarding the vehicle two stars in that category - a somewhat surprising result considering that Fiat went to the trouble of redesigning the 500 for U.S. crash test compatibility. The 500 finds itself in the company of the Dodge Caliber and outgoing Ford Escape as the only models tested so far to receive the three-star designation.
Fiat 500 nets three-star NHTSA safety rating; Toyota Camry and Cadillac CTS get five originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Dec 2011 18:00:00 EST. The automaker saw its sales figures fall by 18 percent compared to the same time last year, thanks largely to lower-than-average dealer inventory brought on by this year's earthquake and tsunami disasters. Toyota sold 121,451 vehicles in the U.S. last month across its three brands. The company moved 147,162 vehicles during the month of September last year.

Even so, the automaker says that October will show sales improvements, according to Automotive News. Bob Carter, group vice president of Toyota Motor Sales, said that right now, U.S. dealers have a 30-day supply of vehicles, and that inventory will continue to grow in the coming months.

Carter also underscored the fact that his company would reverse a five-month trend of sales losses in October and once again post gains. That's likely to be true given that the 2012 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid are likely to bring in buyers as well as the company's Prius V.
Toyota is considering moving production of the company's Korean-market Camry to the United States, according to Reuters. The move would take advantage of the free trade agreement between the U.S. and South Korea and put Toyota in a better position financially as the yen continues to strengthen.

The Korean-market Camry would be built alongside the U.S.-spec Camry in the automaker's Georgetown, Kentucky facility. Even with word that Toyota is mulling sending production outside of Japan, the company has said that it is still committed to keeping some manufacturing at home.

The Toyota Camry has enjoyed substantial success in South Korea, where it remains one of the most popular foreign-built vehicles in the country. Last year, Toyota sold around 4,200 Camry models in the South Korea. That represents a small figure compared to the 203,688 units produced at the Georgetown plant last year, but shifting production to the States could still pay large dividends for Toyota.
Toyota to move production of Korean-market Camry to America? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 11:28:00 EST.
A sleeper is any vehicle that appears to be slow, but is hiding an evil secret in its engine bay. Sleepers are scintillating machines that prove time and skill (and money) can turn a garden variety family sedan or station wagon into a street rocket ready to tackle those with far more cash to burn.

Take this Toyota Camry, for example - it just received a new lease on life courtesy of Canadian tuner Dynamotorsports. Under the hood sits a 3.0-liter V6 engine fitted with custom intake and exhaust manifolds, a big ol' HKS turbo and a whole lot of boost. The end result: a Camry that puts down 728 horsepower - at the wheels.

We imagine that mashing the gas results in a display of torque steer that would make Hercules weep as his arms thrash from side to side. Still, this is one Camry we would love to spend some time with, if only for a good laugh. Click past the jump to watch it attack a dyno.
Continue reading 728-hp Toyota Camry is the ultimate sleeper

728-hp Toyota Camry is the ultimate sleeper originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 12:32:00 EST.
Toyota is allowing its North American teams a bit more freedom to build cars that best suit the market in which they work. Earlier in the year, Toyota announced that American designers would be more keyed in to model development, and now comes word that the automaker will no longer be importing Japanese-built Camry sedans into our market. Instead, starting with the 2012 Camry, the popular mid-size sedan will be built Stateside.

Toyota aims to sell 360,000 examples of the Camry per year. In order to produce enough units, Toyota will build the car at both its Georgetown, Kentucky plant and Subaru's assembly facility in Indiana. By building the Camry in the U.S., the automaker will be attempting to offset losses through dollar-yen exchange rates while also providing a boost to local production facilities.
Toyota to stop importing Camry models from Japan originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 08:59:00 EST.
According to Toyota, over the last 30 years the company has sold a staggering 9 million Camry models in the United States. In other words, practically everyone has had some experience with Toyota's ever-popular mid-sizer. Toyota wants to explore how those figures have impacted the world around us with a new advertising campaign. "The Camry Effect" aims to figure out exactly how many visitors to the company's web site have interacted with the sedan over the years.

Toyota is collecting stories about Camry owners and their adventures behind the wheel of the four-door. If you drove your parent's Camry to college, took one across country or otherwise enjoyed some time behind the wheel during a pivotal moment in your life, Toyota wants to hear from you. Head over to The Camry Effect site to share your story and answer a few questions about your experience with the Camry nameplate. Hit the jump to take a look at the campaign's introductory video.
Continue reading Toyota asks owners to measure 'The Camry Effect'

Toyota asks owners to measure 'The Camry Effect' originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 16:56:00 EST.
Automotive News is reporting that Nissan recently scored a hit against Toyota - at least in terms of social media marketing for the new 2012 Camry. When Nissan received word that Toyota was planning to pull back the sheet on the Camry last week, it reportedly set about snatching up promoted tweets featuring the words "Camry," "Toyota Camry," and "mid-sized car." A promoted tweet directs those searching for the terms toward a specific tweet instead of all tweets featuring the term for a 24-hour period. In this case, those looking for information on the Camry were pointed toward product news from Nissan.

At this point, it's unclear whether Nissan intentionally set out to scuttle Toyota's Twitter effort or if the two companies were merely giving each other some good-natured harassment. Either way, we can imagine Toyota will be a little more careful about protecting its search terms in the near future.
How Nissan outmaneuvered Toyota's Camry launch for Twitter supremacy originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 11:30:00 EST.
Toyota has finally pulled the wraps off its all-new 2012 Camry, and the marketing machine is now in full swing. The automaker is hitting the virtual airwaves with a trio of commercials highlighting its newest midsize sedan, as well as Toyota's love for NASCAR. Kyle Busch helps out with some smoky burnouts, high-speed driving and general information about the Camry Hybrid, and yes, that does seem a bit incongruous.

The first spot posted after the jump is titled "Electrified", and shows the NASCAR Camry turning donuts before being hit with some electricity and turning into a Camry Hybrid. The other two showcase Busch showing off for the camera. We can only hope no police were on the scene...

While Toyota competes with Ford, Chevy and Dodge on this country's NASCAR tracks, the pace cars leading them around have remained defiantly American - at least at Daytona, anyway. In the 50 years they've been running the Daytona 500, only once has the pace car been an import: the Porsche 914 that paced the race in 1971.

Apart from that one exception, it's been all Detroit - Pontiacs mostly, but also Buicks, Chevrolets, Dodges, Plymouths and Fords. But just as Toyota has rubbed and bumped its way up the field over the past decade plus of competition, it's now got one of its own up at the front as the official pace car for next year's race.

That's right. When the 2012 Daytona 500 kicks off the Sprint Cup season come February, it'll be the new 2012 Toyota Camry setting the pace. And while some may bemoan the use of an "import" for the task, Toyota would argue that nothing could be more American. After all, the Camry has been built in America (first in Georgetown, Kentucky, and now in Lafayette, Indiana) for 25 years now. And for 13 of the past 14 years, it's been the top selling car in America. So maybe, just maybe, the Toyota Camry has earned the honor.
Continue reading 2012 Toyota Camry chosen as Daytona 500 pace car

2012 Toyota Camry chosen as Daytona 500 pace car originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 15:28:00 EST.
Toyota has manufactured and sold 15 million Camry models across 100 countries since it debuted way back in 1983. It's a number that's nearly unfathomable. If all of those polite four-doors were still roaming the earth, there'd be one for every man, woman and child in Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. combined, and you'd still have a almost a million vehicles left over. Even more eye-widening is Toyota's claim that of the Camry models built and sold over the last 15 years, 90 percent are still happily enduring a daily commute on nearly every corner of the planet. By sheer volume and longevity, the Camry is nothing short of an engineering and manufacturing wonder.

Almost by default, the Camry has grown to become the vehicle by which all other mid-sized creations must measure themselves, and over the past two years, Ford, Hyundai, Kia and Volkswagen have unveiled products designed specifically to lure buyers from the Toyota model's swollen ranks. In response, Toyota City has turned out the seventh-generation Camry - a model that's been altered with blink-and-you'll-miss-it delicacy. But as millions of current Camry owners will tell you, that may not be a bad thing.
