Volkswagen recently rolled out its own Olympic team for the big Beijing 2008 event. They go by the names Touran, Lingyu, Crafter, Sagitar, and Magotan. While they'll never make the synchronized swimming squad, these official participants will be responsible for accompanying the Olympic torch throughout its nearly 25,000-mile journey.

You say you aren't familiar with these entrants? These are all models that Volkswagen sells outside of the United States in continents such as Europe and Asia. More specifically, the Touran (above) is a Golf-based 5-door MPV, the Lingyu is a sedan based on a previous-generation Passat, and the Crafter is a large commercial van. The Sagitar is a re-badged Jetta, and the Magotan is a flagship long-wheelbase Passat.

This eclectic team of Volkswagen vehicles numbering 1,000 strong will represent the German automaker, which has been selected as, "The Official Vehicle for the Olympic Torch Relay." (You may recall Audi being named "The Official Premium Car of the Beijing Olympics" last year.) Cutting through the hype, it means VW will supply a substantial fleet of 1,000 cars to ensure the torch arrives in Beijing still ablaze. According to the VW press release, it will take 346 vehicles for the core convoy, 583 for administration and support, and 30 for security and media. We have no idea where the other 41 cars are going, but can tell you that we'd get the torch there intact with just a few cases of Red Bull and a hot new 2009 Scirocco.

The current chromed snout on VWs offerings is not only beastly to look at, it doesn't help Audi's cars stand apart, either. We suppose that cuts both ways -- VW probably benefits by a familial resemblance to their cousins. However, the front end on the upcoming Sharan/Touran twins looks to hint at the future face of Volkswagen, we hope.

There's a bumper crop of spiffy van-lets over on the Continent right now, and the Touran/Sharan are latecomers to the party. The vans won't drop until 2010, due to styling tweaks that Martin Winterkorn has reportedly requested.

The Sharan will likely be available with sliding doors, while the Touran will make do with conventional front-hinged points of entry. A healthy selection of powertrain options is expected to be available, from the turbocharged FSI 2.0 liter four cylinder to a 3.2 liter FSI VR6, along with the requesite TDI powerplants. 4Motion will be available, which we'd love to sample hooked up to the gruntiest of the diesels (which will surpass the VR6 in torque output). Being based on the Passat's underpinnings yields a van that's easy to wield while offering great space-efficiency. We like the look of these boxy family haulers, with their crisp edges and large glass areas, but alas, we'll have to take up intercontinental jet-setting if we wish to drive them.

[Source: Autobild via German Car Blog]
Sharan/Touran - could it mark the end of the current VW grille? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 05 May 2007 09:09:00 EST. First, there was the CrossPolo. Next came the CrossGolf. In Mexico, you can even snag yourself a CrossFox. Now, European families can get in on the action with the similarly butched-up CrossTouran.

Based on the newly redesigned Touran, the CrossTouran adopts the soft-roader looks of its siblings, but remains a regular MPV underneath it all. New cladding, a raised suspension, model-specific colors and wheels, special interior upholstery and a few other Cross-only features sum up the changes. We wonder, did this really need unequal-width tires in front and back? All it seems to do here is inconvenience prospective owners by preventing them from rotating the rubber.

Still, it's a nice looking appearance package, similar in execution to the "Scout" models offered by VW's Skoda subsidiary.

In all, a choice of six engines (three gasoline -- two of which are TSI, or three TDI) and two transmission types (manual or DSG) are available. You can read about all the features at length in the press release below the fold.

(Gallery, press release after the jump)

[Source: VW]
Continue reading Not "crossing" the pond: Volkswagen's CrossTouran

Not "crossing" the pond: Volkswagen's CrossTouran originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Dec 2006 14:04:00 EST.

Following sister-company Audi's example with the high-performance S model range (and, for that matter, similar divisions from competitors like Mercedes AMG and BMW M), Volkswagen has been developing its R range into a force to be reckoned with. First came the 250-hp Golf R32 hot hatch, followed by the recently-released 300-hp Passat R36 sports sedan. Now, just like Audi has the purely aesthetic (read: all show, no go) S-Line trim packages, VW is following suit in revealing the new R-Line.

With the R-Line, buyers of the Golf, Touran, Passat and Touareg can opt to for a more sporty appearance. The packages come in three increments: Trendline, Plus and Exterior. Developed by Volkswagen Individual, they include upgraded wheels in 17 and 18-inch diameters, competition-style steering wheels, pedals, more supportive seats and special interior trim. Buyers can also opt for blacked-out grilles, anthracite powder-coated wheels and full aero kits.

While Volkswagen was once the bare-bones, basic "people's car", the German carmaker has been striving to emerge from that shell with high-performance models, exclusive editions, high-end luxury automobiles and the like. The R-Line takes them a step further in that direction, giving buyers the option of spicing things up a bit.

The slick tranny is standard equipment on vans powered by the 170 PS 1.4 TSI, and is optional on all other TSI and TDI-powered Tourans. The green-minded can opt for the Touran EcoFuel, which runs on compressed natural gas. As we reported earlier in the month, the interior of the car gets upgraded with more premium materials and nice touches like the available two-tone leather seats. Finally, gadgetry fanatics will be into the new Park Assist, which enables near-automatic parking in under 15 seconds.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: we want more sporty minivans like this in the States. With optional seating for seven, styling that's easy on the eye, the trick DSG, automagic parking, and a size that actually keeps the "mini" in minivan, the Touran would win people over. People for whom a station wagon is not quite enough and the current crop of maxi-sized minivans is too much.

The original Chrysler minivans were smaller and more carlike. Those days are long gone, unfortunately. We know VW's coming with their own take on the next Chrysler minivan, but honestly, we'd be happy with this.

[Photos, press release after the jump]

[Source: VW]
Continue reading Paris Motor Show: Volkswagen Touran

Paris Motor Show: Volkswagen Touran originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Sep 2006 07:37:00 EST. The seven-seater gets a new Passat/Eos-style face that features VW's new grille and headlamp designs. A walk around back reveals a redesigned bumper and new taillamps. It's not the sexiest MPV you'll ever see, but it's clean and appealing to the eye. The refreshed interior incorporates some upgraded materials and adds MP3 support to the stock head uniit. The instrument panel and controls are all logically arranged.

The big news for the '07 Touran is the introduction of Volkswagen's ParkAssist system. It uses sensors fore and aft to help the driver place the car in the optimal position to park and then waits for him or her to engage reverse. Once that happens, the car takes over steering while the driver controls the gas and brake. VW claims that the car will park itself within 15 seconds.

Power-wise, a selection of diesel and gasoline 4-cylinders will be available, including the new 140 hp Twincharger 1.4L TSI.

European MPVs are pretty cool. Yes, they're smaller than the traditional American minivan, but they often have nicer, sportier styling. Consider this: if, for example, Ford was selling the S-Max and Galaxy here instead of the Freestar, would they have axed their minivan program in favor of the Fairlane? Not likely. Ford's Euro MPVs are two of the more stylish people movers you'll find anywhere. People would actually be buying them. (Kudos to Ford, however, for bringing over the Mazda5.)

Will we ever see this VW? Nope, We're getting a machine based on the new Chrysler minivan platform, meaning it'll be big. If we're lucky, however, some of this Touran's understated style will rub off on it.

(Detailed press release, photos after the jump)

[Source: Volkswagen UK]
Continue reading Paris Preview: VW Shows off the new Touran

Paris Preview: VW Shows off the new Touran originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Sep 2006 03:01:00 EST. With in excess of 10,000 different build combinations and pressures to streamline their operations, VW has resorted to nixing entire trim levels, colors, options in an effort to simplify its offerings.

Models that have seen their final days on UK shores include the 4.2-liter V8 short-wheelbase Phaeton, the Polo in 1.4-liter TDI E, S, SE and Sport variants, and the Touran in 2.0-liter FSI 150 SE trim. Newer models like the Eos, Touareg, Jetta, and Fox have been spared.

The company promises that existing owners of discontinued models will not have any service or parts issues as a result.

While Autoblog has yet to confirm if mainland Europe is similarly affected, we would be surprised if similar measures weren't taken there as well. Will U.S. lineups receive a similar once-over? Nothing is certain, but VW's U.S. lineups have a far more abbreviated lineup of vehicles and trims on offer, particularly in areas of drivetrain options. If company officials do seek to lessen the number of build combinations, expect changes to be wrought with a far lighter hand.
