Toyota's decision to move its US headquarters from its longtime home in Torrance, CA, to Plano, TX, was one of the biggest stories in the automotive industry this spring. It's official, Toyota is relocating its US operations to Plano, TX. And it won't be a symbolic 'all ranch and no cattle' gesture – the Japanese automaker, whose headquarters have been in California since 1957, has decided to base nearly all of its operations in the Lone Star State, including much of its engineering, finance and sales and marketing teams.

OK, but let's see how well Honda can control hydrogen refueling temperature in Houston or Buffalo. That's what some pessimists may be saying now that the Japanese automaker has installed a fast-fueling hydrogen station in the oh-so-temperate environs of Torrance, CA. That city is about 20 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles and a sliver of it actually touches the Pacific Ocean, so we're not talking about wild swings in air temperature here.

Heather Peters, who last week was awarded almost $10,000 in a California court in damages over claims that Honda falsely advertised the fuel economy of its Civic Hybrid, is delivering a petition to the 50 state attorneys general urging that class-action plaintiffs against the automaker bargain for a better settlement. As of today, almost 1,150 people have signed the petition.

Automotive News reports Lexus may uproot its global headquarters and relocate to California. The move would pull the Toyota luxury brand out of Japan for the first time in the nameplate's history. Toyota has already shifted Lexus' global marketing functions to the company's campus in Torrance, California in what is being seen as the first step in a larger move. Ballard Power Systems will deploy one of its one-megawatt CLEARgen fuel cell generators at Toyota's U.S. sales and marketing headquarters in Torrance, CA. The CLEARgen fuel cell system will utilize hydrogen produced by steam-reformation of renewable biogas generated at a nearby landfill. Deployment of the CLEARgen system will enable Toyota to satisfy its peak and mid-peak power needs by utilizing electricity from either the fuel cell system or from the electrical grid.
