What should Top Gear do to celebrate its next Facebook milestone... blow up a Veyron?

The blokes at "Top Gear" love their Facebook friends so much, that when they got 10 million fans, Jeremy Clarkson recorded a short personal thank you. Well, as personal as Clarkson can get anyway. And the Stig showed his appreciation by exploding a caravan (video after the jump).

But the batty Brits are now challenged with celebrating their next Facebook milestone of achieving 15 million fans. They're hoping those very fans can help them with a stunt that tops caravan carnage. The "Top Gear" team is willing to do anything, no matter how crazy, to say thanks.

Suggestions so far include drifting 15 $1 million cars in sync, a trip from Scotland to London on lawnmowers, fabricate a V8-powered Robin, and a road trip across Germany in VW Beetles.

The AB team brainstormed a bit and came up with the idea of rewarding a fan (hopefully one of us) with a brand new Bugatti Veyron! But for only 24 hours. After which the "lucky" guy (or gal, of course) would be obligated to obliterate the supercar in a depressing display of overwhelming pyrotechnics.

Report: Top Gear USA premiers to middling viewership

At long last, American car nuts have a version of Top Gear to call our own. The project has been in the works for a long time now, and finally debuted on the History Channel this past Sunday. As we go to ~~press~~ server, some 17,500 readers responded to our poll: over 42 percent had already watched it, a few more said they intended to, and less than 14 percent of respondents said they weren't even interested. That's all well and good, but how did the show itself actually fair on the all-important ratings chart?

Well, according to Inside Line, it did kinda-sorta alright. Some 1.9 million viewers tuned in to watch the show's debut. And that might seem like a lot - especially considering the NFL games it was airing against, but it's really just fair-to-middling. Compare it to the premiere for Conan O'Brien's new show on TBS (4.2 million) or History's top program Pawn Stars (3-5 million) and suddenly it looks quite modest. Still, it's in the very early going, and it's still around average for a basic cable show, so it's way too early to draw any conclusions about Top Gear USA and its fortunes.

Ben "The Stig" Collins planning Top Gear rival?

Remember when any hint of the identity of the vaunted Stig was news? Even after Ben Collins outed himself as the mysterious super driver it took a few days before we truly believed that the biggest secret in British television had been spoiled. Judging by recent comments made by Jeremy Clarkson, we're starting to think there's little chance we'll ever see the Stig again on Top Gear, but that doesn't mean Collins is out of television for good.

The UK's Telegraph reports that the former driver-in-white is fielding several offers to host his own show in the near future. Of course, Collins isn't quite ready to spill details about his future plans, but he reportedly did mention that he wants to have a show with riskier stunts than what we're used to seeing on Top Gear. In fact, Collins even managed to take a completely unveiled shot at Jezza by saying that the main man at TG "doesn't have that kind of respect for people behind the scenes.

Until a show officially materializes, Collins plans to cash in on his book about the show, followed perhaps by a bit of fiction writing. Meanwhile, Top Gear will likely be hard at work finding the next Stig, though we're guessing the show's producers won't bite on Collins' idea to do a "Who wants to be The Stig" reality show, if only because the former Stig thought of it.

Just when you thought there wasn't any more news to be drained from Stig-gate, Ben Collins has come out and announced his favorite car from his time beneath the white helmet. Surprisingly enough, it's not some high-dollar sports machine. Instead, Collins says that the most fun he ever had behind the wheel while employed with the BBC was in a Toyota Aygo. He and a gaggle of other race drivers spent an afternoon playing car soccer with the Aygo, and after a full day of abuse, the little Toyota just kept on chugging along.

But if Collins is choosing a piece of high-end metal to adore, the guy said that the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport helped form some of his best memories of Top Gear. Yeah, we can see that one.

The former tame racing driver's least favorite car? Well, that's a surprise, too. That honor goes to a Koenigsegg. Collins infamously binned one of the ultra-rare machines during shooting - the only car to suffer damage while in his care. Videos of both segments are available after the jump.

Ben "The Stig" Collins accuses BBC of bullying

Ben Collins, the ~~artist~~ driver formerly known as The Stig, is making sure he keeps everyone tabbed on his side of the story. Most recently, he has accused the BBC of bullying him when he informed them that he was writing a book about his years of anonymous lap times. Furthermore, he alleges that it was the BBC that actually gave away his identity in a piece for one of its own magazines, the Radio Times. After that, Collins says, he felt that his time in the white suit was tenuous and that he should "either jump or be pushed."

Collins' assertions appear a little shaky. The BBC article he highlights as "outing" him was a piece that took names from UK betting outlet William Hill to wonder about The Stig's identity. At the top was Damon Hill, next was Ben Collins and at the bottom was A Giant Wasp, so Collins as a potential Stig was already a matter of speculation -- at least with the bookmakers. As for the bullying claims, the BBC refutes the accusations. Collins says he was "hoping for the backing of his BBC bosses," but is anyone really surprised that the BBC wanted to keep a secret... secret?

Some say that Top Gear will viciously kill off The Stig

When murmurings began hitting the web that the man who plays The Stig was itching to publish his memoirs, we knew it was only a matter of time before the character met his end on the BBC's Top Gear. According to The Sun, James May has hinted that White Stig will be dealt with in the same manner as his predecessor, Black Stig. As you may recall, Black Stig infamously tried to outperform a Harrier jet from behind the wheel of the Top Gear Jaguar, only to overshoot his mark and wind up at the bottom of the sea.

According to May, White Stig may not be so fortunate. In his interview with The Sun, May said that he and his co-hosts may actually drive to The Stig's house, beat him silly and reclaim his suit of racing armor. We're thinking that the show's writers will likely come up with something a little more grandiose when it comes to sending the disgraced character out to pasture, but you never know. Will the show pit White Stig against the Royal Navy like his predecessor... or will he face some crueler fate? We'll find out soon enough. Thanks for the tip, Gooner!

While everyone and their mother seems to have made Top Gear USA bashing the new national pastime, you might want to take a look at the newest video tease it's just released. While the appeal of the BBC show undoubtedly revolves around the chemistry between its three mismatched hosts, at its core, it's a show about cars. So even if we're not certain the three American hosts can live up to the legacy established by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, perhaps they really don't need to.

Top Gear USA isn't a replacement for the BBC show after all - it's more of a spin-off. And as long as the production values stay high - and from the looks of it, they have - it's just more car pr0n for all of us. Case in point: the video you'll see after the jump. The storyline is fairly straightforward: Round up the baddest Lamborghinis from the corral - Superleggera, Balboni and SuperVeloce - and open them up so we can see what they'll do. Report: Top Gear game headed to iPad, mobile phones

For a show from another country that only produces 14 episodes a year, Top Gear is everywhere. And it's going to be even more everywhere soon, thanks to a licensed video game reportedly being developed for PC, console, mobile and tablet platforms. There's no word on exactly how the developers plan to game-ify the Top Gear television experience, but we guess we'll find out soon enough - it's due by the end of the year.

Top Gear producer on Stig book: "He's ours"

Who is the Stig? That question is consistently one of Google's top queries, proving the world wants to know the identity of Top Gear's masked racing driver. But... ask yourself again, Do you really want to know who the Stig is?

As pointed out by Top Gear producer Andy Wilman, part of the reason we all care so much about the Stig is because of the mystery surrounding his identity. What's more, his character is owned and was created and nurtured by the BBC - just the same as a camera or the film used to record a scene belongs to the British broadcaster, so does intellectual property like this suspiciously fast driving character.

We can't argue with that, especially after reading Wilman's take on the subject. Perhaps once the man behind the mask is no longer under the employ of the BBC and bound by his signed contract, we'll be free to know his true identity and read his memoirs. Until then, though, Top Gear seems ready to do all it can to keep the Stig's alter ego a closely guarded secret. Including fighting a battle with HarperCollins in court to keep an autobiography from being published.

Report: BBC blocking The Stig's memoirs

Some say he's a literary giant, and that a portion of his autobiography is featured on the Rosetta Stone. All we know is, he's ticked off the BBC bosses by seeking to publish his memoirs. According to UKPA and ESPN, the tame racing driver has written the tale of his life and wants to share it with the world. The only problem is doing so would violate the confidentiality agreement in the Stig's contract. The Beeb is also arguing that revealing his identity would ruin Top Gear for the millions of fans of the show around the world.

Supposedly there are only a scant few people who actually know the Stig's true identity, including Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. As the UKPA points out, each of those presenters has gone on to other money-making projects outside of the Top Gear realm, leaving the poor Stig to take out his frustrations on the reasonably-priced car. We don't necessarily see what the BBC is so concerned about. It's not like anyone reads Morse code these days anyway.

Top Gear, Clarkson blamed for Reliant Robin prank [w/video]

The Reliant Robin received some time in the spotlight recently when Top Gear superstar Jeremy Clarkson took the three-wheeled auto on a precarious 14-mile journey through the laws of physics. Clarkson managed to roll the tipsy tricycle a bunch of times during the hilarious bit, reminding us again that the instability of three-wheeled vehicles probably isn't worth the improved fuel economy - at least for those trikes with the single wheel leading the way. The stunt may have captured the attention of some bird-brained pranksters over in the UK, as Barry Cloughton can attest.

The BBC reports that Cloughton's Reliant Robin was overturned twice in one weekend in what the retired plumber calls a "copy-cat attack." The motorized trike was first tipped one Friday night as it sat outside Cloughton's house. After the Robin was returned to its proper upright stance, the vehicle was overturned a second time the following night, this time damaging the side mirror and spilling gasoline all over the driveway and into the man's garden. Sargent Steve Reid of St. Austell Police stresses that this situation could have become deadly if the petrol were to somehow ignite, adding that pranksters have been tipping vehicles since long before Clarkson first went topsy turvy in June.

On a somewhat odd side note, Cloughton calls his Robin a "good car," adding that he only turned over a Robin one time after hitting a slippery patch. That's it, just the one time? Call us crazy, but even flipping one time is probably one time too many. Click past the break to watch Clarkson's travails with the Robin.

You all know that the long-awaited U.S. version of Top Gear is headed to The History Channel, and now it's time to get your first taste of the show. The first trailer for the show is online, and if it's any indication, Tanner Foust, Rutledge Wood and Adam Ferrara are going to win over viewers, and the program will not stray from the BBC original's successful formula of cool tests and zany challenges.

In fact, one of the new show's challenges is the trailer's centerpiece. In involves the hosts determining the best $1,000 car by putting a trio of them through a punishing "moonshine run" dirt course. The ride selected for the teaser is Ferrara's, the airborne 1976 Cadillac Deville Calais seen above (it could be a '75, but we're pretty certain that's the '76 grille pattern). How does a malaise-era Caddy handle a landing after catching that much air? About as well as you'd imagine - this isn't the make-believe world of '70s cop shows, after all. It's hilarious.

Bottom line: The hosts exude great chemistry and the motoring action is pretty much everything you'd want and expect from a program calling itself Top Gear. Still under wraps, however, is the Stig. Recently, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport made headlines by setting a new land speed record, hitting 267.81 miles per hour out on Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien test track. It may be the fastest production car ever built, but straight-line speed isn't everything, you know. Just ask the Top Gear boys - the standard-spec Bugatti Veyron may be an insanely fast machine, but out on the test track, it failed to earn first (or even second or third) place honors.

Naturally, it didn't take long for Top Gear to get the new Veyron SS in the hands of its tame racing driver, The Stig. Captain Slow may have managed the top-rung Bugatti up to 259.11 mph, but how does it fare on the track? Does it take the first place spot, or merely fall somewhere near the top? Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz have been all over the world pushing their not-so-blockbuster movie Knight and Day, and while moviegoers haven't exactly filled local theaters, enthusiasts should most definitely witness the Hollywood A-listers on the latest episode of Top Gear. The two stars appeared on our favorite BBC show to compete against other celebrities in "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car," and their performance far outshines their recent box office receipts.

Hit the jump to watch as the two push hard around the Top Gear track in a KIA Cee'd. We won't ruin the results for you, but we will reveal that Diaz shows that she can swear like a trucker while looking good with a helmet on, and Cruise proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a very competitive guy. Seriously, the man literally finishes the race on two wheels, nearly giving Clarkson a heart attack in the process. Who got the better part of their co-star? You'll have to watch to find out.

James May earns honorary doctorate from his alma mater

That's Doctor Captain Slow, to you. James May, one of the three amigos of Top Gear fame, has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Lancaster University. May graduated from the institution in 1985 with a degree in music, though according to the BBC, he hasn't been back to the school in nearly 10 years. May now carries an honorary Doctor of Letters diploma from his alma mater and says that he was flattered to receive the accolade.

May isn't the only Top Gear presenter with an honorary degree under his belt. Oxford Brooks University awarded Jeremy Clarkson with an honorary engineering doctorate in 2005. As far as we know, Richard Hammond has earned no such honor from any institution to date. Something tells us that there's bound to be quite a bit of ribbing over this fact on the Top Gear set.

Report: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz to be the stars in Top Gear's Reasonably Price Car

According to The Sun, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz will take to the infamous Top Gear track in an attempt to topple the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car leader board. Evidently, Cruise contacted the show about a stint behind the wheel of the infamous Kia c'eed while in the UK. Both he and Diaz were in country for the debut of their new film "Knight and Day."

So far, we don't know how either of the two stars did on track, but we're betting Cruise managed to hold his own. It's no secret that the guy has a penchant for sports cars of just about every flavor. Besides, he starred in Days of Thunder.

The crew at Top Gear hasn't said exactly when we can expect to see the two go around the track, but we're betting it won't be too long before the segments air, possibly this Sunday.

Some say the BBC is launching an investigation... all we know is, he's not The Stig

It would seem that someone is going through the trouble of staging an elaborate ruse by pretending to be none other than The Stig - at least, according to the BBC. An article in the North-West Evening Mail says that one Martin Perzylo recently spotted a suspiciously mute, white-suited individual blasting down the M55 in a Porsche. Perzylo followed the figure for about 30 minutes until the pretender to the test-driving throne pulled off and into a service station, followed by a convoy of Land Rovers wearing Top Gear logos. Despite an array of bodyguards on hand to make sure the imposter Stig kept his (her? its?) helmet on, Perzylo was brave enough to ask for a photo, and the individual obliged.

The BBC is none too happy about the incident, claiming that whoever was wearing the white racing suit and helmet was not The Stig. Really? We can't imagine too many folk with the means to wrangle up a Porsche, a convoy of Land Rovers and matching security would spend their time rolling around the British countryside pretending to be a TV celebrity. But then again, this sort of thing has happened at least once before. Either way, the broadcasting company says that it has launched an inquiry into the incident. Last week, we told you that the Top Gear crew was smirking about having some sort of involvement in the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport's land speed record. And while it was easy for us to chalk it up as simple Top Gear embellishment (they did take credit for the erupting Icelandic volcano, remember), it appears that the TG team - James May, specifically - had a pretty big part in all of this record-setting madness. Apparently he wasn't the 267.81-mph record-setting driver, but Captain Slow did manage to pilot the new Veyron Super Sport up to an extremely respectable 259.11 mph, and the high-speed tale is recounted in the magazine's August issue, which should be hitting newsstands as you read this.

This isn't May's first experience with the Veyron, of course. We all remember that the Captain did a similar test run in the standard-spec Bug, hitting 253 mph out on Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien high-speed oval. (We have the video available after the jump for those of you who want to re-live the experience.) Now, the one question that remains - is the Super Sport fast enough to finally reconcile that lost race between Hammond and the jet fighter? Hot tips, PS3 and Brandon!

Conducting utterly inappropriate comparison tests is completely par for the course at Top Gear. After all, these were the guys that pitted a Ford Fiesta against a Chevrolet Corvette and a Jaguar XK120 against a Vincent Black Shadow and a train. In this week's latest episode Richard Hammond samples the new Chevrolet Camaro SS with its lovely 6.2-liter small-block V8 and then pulls out a slightly different kind of 6.2-liter V8 powered car.

Frankly, we doubt many (if any!) people are actually cross-shopping the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG against the Camaro SS, but it sure is entertaining to watch the big German power-sliding around the air-strip test track at the hands of The Stig. With any luck, this episode will be the last time that we get to hear the Stig lapping to the less-than-dulcet tones of the vuvuzela.
