Helicopter crashes on Top Gear Korea set while chasing Corvette ZR1

The formula of Top Gear Korea is seemingly about the same as it is everywhere else in the world, including the flagship British original: involve interesting cars in fantastical situations with charismatic hosts. That prescription has proved to be pretty reliable over the years, and has lead to some truly memorable and exciting pieces of television.

Something like that was undoubtedly what the Korean producers were after when they lined up this segment - a drag race between a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and an AH1 Cobra military helicopter. The planners almost certainly did not expect the filming of the segment to go quite as wrong as it actually did, with the helicopter actually crashing into the dirt after the "drag race" had been completed. Thankfully, we're told that no one was seriously injured in the crash, but the footage, in the video below, is pretty damn chilling to watch, nevertheless.

Helicopter crashes in Arizona while filming segment for Korean Top Gear

The Top Gear production team from Korea averted a serious disaster after a helicopter used during filming crashed into the Arizona desert. Amazingly, both the pilot and the camera person escaped the incident relatively unharmed. CNN reports that the pair credit their survival to the thick exterior of the retired military chopper.

Hit the jump to watch the video of the actual crash. The footage only reveals the last few seconds before the impact, but the aftermath video shows a chopper that is wrecked nearly beyond recognition. We're amazed and thrilled that nobody was seriously injured.

Top Gear Korea is better than you might think

We know, we know... you miss Top Gear. We do, too. But there won't be another new episode until December, and the new season isn't expected to start until January. So what are we to do in the meantime? Well, we could watch re-runs, but we've seen 'em all. We could watch the American version - and many of us do - but, you know - it's still not the same. Neither is Fifth Gear, for that matter. Fortunately the sun never sets on the Top Gear empire, and today there are different series set up in locations around the world.

As far as we can tell, in addition to the original on the BBC and the History Channel version we get here, there are also series in Russia, China, Germany and Korea. There was also an Australian series, but it was recently cancelled, meaning we have no other series available to us in English.

But does that mean we can't enjoy them? Well, maybe, but the Korean series, for example, isn't half bad - whether you understand Korean or not. The cinematography and production quality strike us as better than most of the spin-offs, if not quite as good as the original. But don't take our word for it: we've placed a few segments after the jump for your viewing pleasure. Like what you see? Top Gear global conquest continues with South Korean series

The sun may have long since set on the British Empire, but the UK's finest export doesn't appear to be showing any signs of slowing down its global expansion.

After setting up studios in Australia, the United States, Russia, China and more - not to mention the countless editions of the magazine in different languages around the globe - word has it that a new series of Top Gear is being readied for South Korea.

Following the famous Top Gear formula, hosts reportedly already lined include a professional racing driver named Kim Jin-Pyo, an enthusiast named Kim Kap-Soo and a local celebrity aptly named Yeon Jung-Hoon, along with their own Korean Stig.

The BBC series spinoff has reportedly been picked up by local television network XTM for a 13-episode pilot season and is apparently already in production, with challenges including a race against a bullet train and a cross-country road trip.
