1912 Chevrolet Classic Six - Click above to see the rest of Ed Welburn's Top 10 Designs

Ed Welburn is the current head of design at General Motors, which means he has the tall task of pointing the company into the future without abandoning timeless designs by names like Harley Earl. As an exercise in getting in touch with his roots, Welburn has worked up a list of the top 10 Chevrolet designs of all time.

The list is populated with all the probable starters from Chevy's century-long past. From the 1912 Classic Six, the first car to carry the Chevrolet name, to the 1936 Suburban and the 2011 Camaro, Welburn gives his impression of the importance of each design.

Welburn has been surrounded by cars his entire life, from his youth in his father's body shop in Philadelphia to taking the helm at Chevrolet's design department in 2003. Welburn has worked for General Motors since he graduated from Howard University in the early 1970s, so he his connection with Chevrolet designs, ahem, runs deep.

Feel free to click through the gallery below, which includes Welburn's commentary on each iconic design. Alternatively, you can find it all in one place in the press release after the break.

Hey good lookin' - Click above for high-res image gallery

USA Today looked at cars on sale between 2000 and 2009 and ranked them in order of most improved. Before you get hot and heavy in the comments, let us remind you that they are only talking about the way the cars look. Not how they perform. Trust us, there will be plenty for you to get angry about as is.

We noticed that there were a few cars USA Today left off the list that the vehicular brain trust here at the blog about autos thinks are very much improved. The Ford Taurus being one example. Sure, the new Taurus is large, but the old Taurus (aka Ford 500) was a bulbous bore.

But our real choice is the Maserati Gran Turismo, especially as the last generation Maser GT looked, well, lousy. Or at least like something Maserati might have sold when Chrysler owned them. That said, take a peek at the gallery, and discuss USA Today's list amongst yourselves.

That's right, today we split hairs, obsess over the little stuff and worry about tempests in teapots. While we admit to all that, we must point out that collectively, we drive a lot of cars. And since most of our time is spent sitting in the driver's seat, certain things tend to annoy us more than others. After endless online bitchfests, our list of gripes and grievances reached critical mass and we finally decided to distill into a top-ten list of interior annoyances.

A word about the order of the list. Unlike, say, David Letterman and his ur-list that builds and builds with the jokes getting crueler and funnier as you climb, this particular list is in no particular order. Truth be told told, not everyone on staff agrees with every item on the list. In fact - and believe it or not - we had a pretty heated exchange over a couple of them. Which just goes to show how important car interiors can be. And now, on to the list!

1997 Peterbilt dressed as Optimus Prime - Click above for image gallery

With Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen holding the number box office spot for two weeks, there couldn't be a better time for this ardent Autobot fan to be flogging his truck on eBay. Done up thoroughly enough to qualify as an Optimus Prime replica, this 1997 Peterbilt 379 wears custom PPG paint and clearcoat, along with hand-applied pinstripes.

If you do actually want to haul things, under that extended hood - just like Prime has - there's a 475 horsepower Caterpillar running through a ten-speed Eaton Fuller transmission. Bidding is up to $20,300 at time of writing, but you've got nine days left to get your bid in and make room in your back yard... and then you can retrieve the Allspark.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Optimus has been showing up all sorts of odd places lately, including a guest appearance on The Light Show With David Letterman last night. The booming Autobot leader led his vocal talents to the program's trademark Top 10 list, and you can check out how he did by watching the video after the jump. Hat tip to 94 Taurus owner!

Gallery: Optimus Prime Peterbilt 379

[Sources: eBay; YouTube]
Continue reading eBay Find of the Day: Optimus Prime hiding in plain sight [w/VIDEO]

eBay Find of the Day: Optimus Prime hiding in plain sight [w/VIDEO] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 19:55:00 EST.
Last week, the Late Show with David Letterman did "Top Ten Worst Summer Jobs" and picked GM CEO as the #2 worst job. That got us thinking about our own Top 10 list, and we got right to work. We wanted to do an all-automotive "Worst Jobs" list, and with the industry in such disarray, the possibilities were limitless.

Click on the image above to poke through our Top 10 Worst Summer Jobs for 2009. We were sure to include bankrupt companies, an un-named Italian specialist, certain commanders-in-chief and even a flight attendant. Enjoy the list, then chime in with your own thoughts on the worst summer jobs for 2009 in the comments section.

There's no question that there have been better summers to be the chief executive officer of General Motors. Bankruptcy hearings, plant closings, job cuts and a near certain pay cut will no doubt put a damper on Fritz Henderson's backyard barbecues. The CEO job is so undesirable that it cracked Late Show host David Letterman's Top 10 Worst Summer Jobs list this week. In fact, GM CEO was deemed worse than being the Octomom's babysitter, Susan Boyle's groomer, or even Dick Cheney hunting partner. Ouch. At least it beat out George Bush memoir proof reader.

[Source: CBS Late Show]
GM CEO ranks #2 on Letterman's list of Top Ten Worst Summer Jobs originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 18:29:00 EST.
Click above for Most Expensive ------------------------------- Click above for Least Expensive

There are lots of variables to consider when shopping for your next new car. Obviously, the initial purchase price is a big part of the decision, but that's certainly not the only sum to factor in. For instance, the cost of gas and insurance need to be added in to figure out the final monthly expenditure. This being the case, we're all keenly interested to know how vehicles compare when it comes to these ancillary charges.

Thankfully, there are experts paid to do this tedious work for us. Researchers from Insure.com compiled a list of nearly 300 vehicles available in 2009 and has broken them out in order of average insurance costs. For the most part, the list plays out pretty much as you'd expect to see. There are a few surprises, though. For instance, coming in as the eleventh most expensive vehicle to insure - and therefore the first vehicle not appearing on our list of the most expensive cars to insure - is the Chevy Cobalt SS. That means the littlest Super Sport in the Bowtie stable costs more to insure than cars like the Jaguar XKR, BMW M3 and Audi R8. Who'da thunk?

Want to know more? Take a moment to follow us along as we take a brief look at both ends of the insurance cost spectrum. First, click here to see the Top 10 Most Expensive Cars to Insure.
We love cars here at Autoblog, and we've been inflicted with this particular disease for our entire lives - even back when we were but young little tykes. Like most of you, we have fond memories of plopping ourselves in front of the television to watch Saturday morning cartoons - especially the shows that prominently featured automobiles in one form or another. In fact, that appreciation for all things automotive lives with us to this day, and we still get a kick out of animated features that focus in on our favorite subject in the world.

With all of this in mind, follow along with us today as we recount our favorite Top 10 Animated Cars Of All Time. To make it on our list, a vehicle had to be prominently featured on an animated show on either the small or big screen. Hopefully, there's something for everybody on today's list, as it stretches from before many of us were born right on through to today.

For a brief period in the late 1970s, after rollover safety standards threatened our wind-in-the-hair, sun-loving ways, it was nearly impossible to find a real convertible to buy in America. Instead, automakers introduced alternatives like the targa and T-top that maintained a modicum of protection from a vestigial roof.

All that changed as the '80s approached and the convertible once again took its rightful place in the line-ups of nearly every automaker doing business in America. This resurgence gave way to a host of new drop-tops on the market, and who can forget the throngs of Chrysler LeBaron convertibles or the game-changing Mazda Miata?

Today, though, we're taking a stroll through memory lane with some of the least popular convertibles we could dredge up from our quickly fading memory banks. To qualify for this particular list, the car had to be a true convertible, which excluded such gems as the Suzuki X90, Nissan Pulsar NX and Daihatsu Rocky. Without further ado, then, we bring you the Top Ten Forgotten Convertibles of the past 30 years.

Top Ten Forgotten Convertibles originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 May 2009 12:00:00 EST.
Yesterday we showed you the Top 10 Greatest Pontiacs Of All Time. Coming up with 10 great Pontiacs was both fun and easy, as the brand is responsible for some of the best muscle cars ever made. During its heyday, Pontiac was so good that the entire brand won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award three times. Unfortunately, the oil embargo ruined Pontiac's fun, and "Driving Excitement" was converted into a ragtag collection of badge-engineered mediocrity.

While we're still nostalgic about the dying Pontiac brand, we decided to augment our original list with the Top 10 Worst Pontiacs Of All Time. There were plenty of models from which to choose, and we managed to remember the least loved Pontiac of all time: the Aztek. Click below to check out our list (in no particular order), and make sure to add your least favorite Pontiac in the comments.

Prom is only a few weeks away for most American teenagers, which means high school juniors and seniors are prepping for what many feel are the most important night of their young lives. At our advanced age, we could really care less about proms, but we have a soft spot for the the transportation that ferries gussied up young un's to and from this teenage right of passage. Some choose to travel in the lap of luxury, some appreciate form over function (read: big back seat), while others look to one-up their friends. We poured over the many vehicles available to America's teens and compiled our own list of Top 10 Prom Rides. Click either image to begin and have fun... but not too much fun.

Back in November, we did a post titled Top 10 Cars You Should Never Drive on a First Date. The only problem is that we're less qualified to write this list than the last one, but we decided to give it a go anyway.
There are few concoctions in the automotive industry as bonkers as the mid-engine hatchback. The concept takes the most exotic layout and wraps it in the bodywork of the most mundane and commonplace, creating a paradoxical sub-segment that makes you wonder what their designers were smoking. (Turns out it was rubber, incidentally.) And while incarnations of the mid-engined hatch are a bit of a rarity, the years have produced a considerable number of these most insane of auto types. We're celebrating the holidays with our ten favorites, and invite you to come along in our gallery by clicking on the image below.

Click above for a gallery of the Top Ten Most Search vehicles on KBB

Kelley Blue Book has released its year-end statistics of the most-researched new vehicles on its website, and import models have dominated the rankings yet again. Honda and Toyota are the big winners here, with the Civic and Accord earning the top 2 top spots overall and Toyota grabbing an entire half of the top ten with Nissan and Mazda each sneaking in a lone model to round it out.

Interestingly, the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram (in fact, there are no Chrysler products listed at all) are conspicuously absent from the top 20, despite selling in huge quantities. We know that pickup buyers tend to be extremely loyal shoppers, but the lack of trucks still strikes us as a bit odd.

There were a few bright spots for the U.S. Domestic automakers, including the Ford Escape, which has been completely gone through over the past two model years and is the most-searched American car on KBB and the Chevy Malibu, which is the most-viewed American sedan. Also performing fairly well was the Mustang, a car that's perennially on the wish-lists of gearheads all over the country.
Click above to start the list of Top Ten Least Stolen Vehicles in 2008

Yesterday we showed you the Top Ten Most Stolen Vehicles in 2008 based on thefts per number of insured models. While many of you pointed out that these were, in fact, not the most stolen vehicles overall, most of you agreed that they weren't worth risking time in the clink over, either. Even the most stolen vehicles overall like the Honda Civic, Accord and Toyota Camry don't really seem worth the trouble unless you run a chop-shop. So what can you do to keep your daily commuter parked safe and sound in the driveway? Perhaps drive one of these.

Again using new data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute, we've assembled a new list of the Top Ten Least Stolen Vehicles in 2008. Not all of them are undesirable, some just have very good protective devices. Others are just so popular that their owners don't let them out of their sight. We make no promises about whether or not your particular car will be stolen, but we do know that the IIHS says these vehicles generate the fewest insurance-claim reports related to theft. As before, the figures are reported in number of claims filed for every 1,000 vehicles insured each year, and this most recent report covers vehicles made and sold between 2005 and 2007. So follow the banner to find out what the least stolen cars of 2008 are.

Top 10 Least Stolen Vehicles in 2008 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Dec 2008 19:58:00 EST. The 2008 Top 10 most popular cars among car thieves are... The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute recently released their list of the top 10 most stolen vehicles for 2008, and trucks and SUVs are the biggest target. We wonder if this might reflect some people finding a nefarious way to dispose of their gas-guzzler and collect the insurance money. Hopefully that's not the case, but seriously, if you were a car thief, would you want a land yacht instead of a canyon carver?

For whatever reasons, the most targeted vehicles aren't necessarily the most drool-worthy ones on the road. Thieves tend to go after vehicles that easily blend in with traffic, can be sold for parts or are popular in foreign markets where they can be dumped quickly. Big vehicles also tend to spend more time parked in driveways or on the street rather than in garages, so they're more easily accessible by naydoers. The IIHS looks at insurance-claim reports to determine theft-frequency rates and compile the Most Stolen Vehicle list. The figures are reported in number of claims filed for every 1,000 vehicles insured each year, and this most recent report covers vehicles made and sold between 2005 and 2007.

Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles in 2008 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 19:58:00 EST. However, Forbes points out, some luxury sedans and SUVs are frugal in their fuel consumption, and even retain a healthy amount of their residual values. Based on those two main factors, Forbes.com has named their Top Ten list of "guilt-free luxury cars".

As you'd expect, the bulk of the list is constituted of German and Japanese luxury automobiles for their resale values, and hybrids for their fuel economy. But some of their selections may surprise you. While the Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec, Lexus RX400h and LS460h seem like natural choices, other Mercedes SUVs - namely the M-Class and GL-Class - were also nominated. More surprisingly, the Jaguar XF is on there, as is the flame-snorting Lexus IS-F. The rest of the list is rounded out with the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and Infiniti M35.
About.com has its list of the top 10 fuel efficient cars you'd actually want to, you know, drive -- maybe even be seen driving. It should really be the top 9 cars, because the Acura RSX isn't made any more, and sadly, there are no domestics on it. For that, you have to go to this list, which includes the Ford Focus -- (when did the Focus stop being fun to drive?). And while we're happy about a list of frugal fun that includes the Porsche Boxster, um, when did 24.5 mpg combined start qualifying as frugal?

There are cottage automakers, niche builders and boutique brands hiding in the world's every nook and cranny. Forbes recently compiled a list of the Top Ten Auto Brands You've Never Heard Of. Clearly Forbes and Autoblog do not share the same audience of readers, as you should be well aware of more than half the companies on the list if you read this site. There were a few that caught us by surprise, like Automotive Industries, an Israeli-based manufacturer that mainly produces military vehicles, and ZIL, a Russian limousine builder that supplied Stalin with wheels. We swear the LeBlanc Mirabeau has been seen on Autoblog before, but a search revealed no trace, and Autoblog Chinese has thoroughly covered Asian brands like Hongqi. (Click on a linked automaker in the list to see Autoblog's coverage of the brand.)
According to CNNMoney.com and Edmunds.com,Toyota's Prius tops the list of 10 hottest cars in America, with six Toyota models making the list (including all threeScion models).

Hybrids are hot, too - the Prius, Lexus RX400h and Ford Escape all made the list.

What makes a car "hot"? Edmunds defined a "hot" car as selling close to sticker price, havingminimal incentives or rebates, and spending little time in dealer inventory before purchase. By these criteria, the"Hot 10" are, in order:
