Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine hasn't been around that long, but it sounds like the engine is getting to be fairly popular in the automaker's global car lineup. The Detroit News is reporting that Ford has add a second shift that will allow its German engine plant to double daily output from 500 engines to 1,000.
The Chevrolet Volt could be in for a significant redo in the next 18 to 24 months, according to a report from Automotive News. When the new model comes on line in late 2015 or early 2016, besides the regular spate of interior and exterior styling tweaks, the next Volt could feature a three-cylinder engine under its aerodynamic hood.
Pinnacle Engines, developer of a four-stroke, spark-ignited (SI), opposed-piston Cleeves cycle engine, is initially targeting low-horsepower applications like rickshaws in emerging markets for its "breakthrough ultra-efficient engine." The startup company has reportedly signed a licensing and joint-development agreement with an unnamed Asian vehicle manufacturer. Pinnacle says that its engine will power vehicles that are scheduled to hit the streets in the first quarter of 2013.
