We're all passionate about saving the world, but the amount of enthusiasm we each have is different for everybody. What's your passion level? Let's turn the question into a sliding scale; on one end sits, say, BP, while on the other end, we find Ed Begley Jr. It's a big scale. If you find yourself edging close to the Begley side of the spectrum, you're no doubt paying attention to the fresh crop of all-electric cars on the market.

Electric automaker Think hopes you've been paying attention.

At least, it did up until last week when the company filed for bankruptcy a second time. Clearly, attempting to bring a relatively affordable electric vehicle to the masses is difficult without federal funding (Tesla Motors) or the bank account of a major automotive manufacturer (Nissan Leaf). Think has been down this road before, and it's possible that a group of investors could arrive to save the day. But for the company to be successful, the cost of its car, called the City, would need to come down and marketing dollars would need to go up, both of which are easier said than done. Is Think's machine even worth saving?

2011 Think City originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 11:57:00 EST.
When Ener1 abruptly ended its four-year-long deal with Think Global, saying that its investment was "impaired," we had reason to worry. Now comes word that the struggles continue to mount at Think Global and that the automaker has filed for bankruptcy. Again.

According to a statement released by Ener1, Think Global will liquidate its assets in an attempt to pay back its creditors. Apparently, Ener1 has stepped in and is currently in charge of recovering some $32 million in unpaid loans and accounts receivable from Think Global.

Ener1 spokesman Brian Sinderson, told the Indiana Business Journal that "the amount [Ener1 is owed] could change based on the extent to which funds are recovered as a result of the liquidation of Think Global."

The IBJ could not reach Think spokesman Brendan Prebo for comment on this developing story.
Think Global files for bankruptcy originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 14:22:00 EST.
Would you be willing to part with $36,495 to own an electric Think City? If the words sticker shock come to mind, then how does $17,995* sound? Thankfully, there are deals like this to be had.

Right now, Think is offering select City EVs in its "inventory clearance" sale for as low as $17,995*. Here's a look at how this seemingly amazing deal works out:

 Think City MSRP: $35,495

 Destination and delivery charges: $1,000

 Total delivered price: $36,495

 Federal tax credit: - $7,500

Estimated cost after federal credit: $28,995

Oregon state tax credit: - $7,000

 Think ZEV discount: - $4,000

 Net transaction price: $17,995

But wait, there's a caveat. In states that don't offer tax credits, Think's $4,000 ZEV discount is no longer applicable, which seems counter-intuitive to us. So, for example, Michigan buyers will be asked to dish out $28,995 (after federal tax credits) to purchase a Think City. Check out Think's "inventory clearance" sale to see if raging deals are available in your neck of the woods.
Think offering select City EVs in "inventory clearance" sale for as low as $17,995* originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 May 2011 08:30:00 EST. Canny has officially resigned his post with the electric vehicle maker and will part ways with his former employer at the end of this month to pursue "a new adventure and challenge." Beyond that cryptic explanation, there's little indicating why the former Ford executive would leave the company after helping to salvage the automaker from near ruin. Canny helped Think start European production in Finland, re-ignited European sales, and led the EV-maker to purchase and refurbish a plant in Elkhart, Indiana among other feats.

While speaking with Automotive News, Canny said that he has a range of other opportunities open to him, but for now, he plans on taking some time to be with family in Australia. He has previously served as the worldwide director of strategic planning for Ford, president of Ford South America, president of Ford Argentina and the managing director of Ford Malaysia.
That announcement could come as soon as this week in Louisana. In a report published in Louisiana newspaper The News Star, factory owner Jim Davison will make an announcement on Wednesday of this week. Davison owns a factory that was formerly part of Guide, previously a General Motors lighting division.

While Davison declines to give details of the project or what cars will be built there, some hints are available. The project reportedly includes Silicon Valley venture capitalists Ray Lane and John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. KPC&B has made a lot of green technology investments in recent years, including Th!nk and Fisker Automotive. While Fisker is certainly a possibility, it's less likely since the California-based company already has a deal with Finland's Valmet for production of the new Karma. Th!nk has been showing its electric city car in the U.S. recently, so we figure their products are the most likely ones to emerge from Ouachita Parish (about midway between Shreveport and Jackson, Mississippi). Thanks to Justin for the tip!

Gallery: Th!nk City

[Source: The News-Star]
REPORT: New auto assembly plant to be announced this week... perhaps for Th!nk? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 08:01:00 EST.
