While the song "Magic Bus" was about riding public transit, it's been co-opted into Type2 culture, and the Who even performed at a 60th anniversary event held for Volkswagen's seminal hauler in Hanover, Germany last year.

This year, the Who are holding a concert to kick off a lottery to win a 1965 split-windscreen bus provided by VW Commercial Vehicles and carrying a paint scheme designed by the band's art director, Richard Evans. Of course, the imagery of band members on the bus appears to be from a time when Roger Daltrey could sing "hope I die before I get old" with conviction. The van will be on display outside London's Royal Albert Hall until the 13th of April, and £5 will get you a ticket for a chance to win the bus, as well as a free download of an unreleased live version of "Magic Bus." With the low cost of entries and the nobility of the cause, we hope all those former hippies who sold out to become yuppies in the 1980s can find a remaining shred of their former dreams to save the world and enter early and often. Press release after the jump

Gallery: Magic Bus Volkswagen Van

[Source: Volkswagen]

Continue reading VW giving away a The Who-themed "Magic Bus" for charity

VW giving away a The Who-themed "Magic Bus" for charity originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 11:31:00 EST. The Who is an iconic band from the 60's. That's why when Volkswagen decided to revisit the Microbus concept they looked to members of The Who for guidance. While not only playing a song titled Magic Bus, The Who also used a VW Camper for touring in their early years of existence. They encouraged Volkswagen by expressing interest in a more economical and safer update of the Camper.

The new Camper concept being researched at Volkswagen is nicknamed Bulli. As with many current design trends, the Bulli will have a stripped out retro appearance. The aim is to appeal to more frugal consumers. The possibility is there if they can achieve demand for enough units. We just hope they keep them off the racetrack and inside the paddock.

[Source: Auto Express]
Volkswagen considering a Microbus revival? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 20 Oct 2007 19:03:00 EST. Known for smashing up his gear, our theory is that Pete only continues that anti-authoritarian gesture for show, and he doesn't break the good stuff. We've seen him break lots of Stratocasters, but precious few Les Pauls (though he does seem to have some animosity toward the SG, too). This Ferrari is definitely the good stuff, and it appears to be in great shape. The odometer has counted off 29,000 clicks, and the brown leather seats have likely taken on a nice patina. Today's exchange rate sets the price at $98,239.30. As used Maranello's go, that's on par with what the market seems to be bearing. Maybe as part of the purchase, you could have Pete show you how to windmill as you bash the shifter through its gated path.

[Source: Luxist]
Magic Bus - Pete Townshend's 550 Maranello for sale originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jul 2007 12:01:00 EST.
